Back in the 1950s, six passionate clubbies with nothing but a tent and a borrowed surf reel sparked the movement that became Ōrewa Surf Life Saving Club. From driftwood towers and sand-floored sheds, the Club grew thanks to the grit of families like the Kelleways, Pearsons and Hoppers whose dedication built a legacy still thriving today. With community support, raffles and volunteer labour, the first clubhouse was completed in 1960-debt-free and powered by passion. Over the years, the Club has evolved, welcoming women in 1972 and launching Junior Surf in 1974. Since then, lifeguards have carried out over 1,100 rescues and countless first aid and preventative actions, while shaping generations of youth through leadership, fitness and service. Today, the Club remains at the heart of the Ōrewa community, committed to its purpose: to protect our community in and around the water. In 2026, a new Community Hub will continue this proud tradition. 🌊
