AI study finds nearly 15% of Americans deny climate change is real
Using social media data and artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time ever in a comprehensive national assessment, a new University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) study reveals that nearly 15% of Americans deny that climate change is real. Dimitrios Gounaridis, a research fellow at CSS, and Joshua Newell, a professor at SEAS, used Twitter (now X) data from 2017-2019 and AI techniques to understand how social media has spread climate change denialism, successfully analyzing the data to estimate climate change belief and denial rates. The study also identified key influencers, such as former President Donald Trump, and how they spread and cement misinformation about climate change by leveraging world and weather events.

Meet the Future: Transforming Vacant Land in Detroit
Meet the Future: Transforming Vacant Land in Detroit
It has been a decade since Detroit’s historic bankruptcy, and although the signs of recovery are palpable throughout Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, New Center and the Riverfront—with clear signs of private investment and development—there exists a different reality when you leave these more central parts of the city. An estimated 19 square miles of vacant land remain scattered throughout Detroit, representing unique opportunities and complex challenges. Who acquires this vacant land and how it is transformed holds the potential to empower communities to reinvent the future of Detroit, something that University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (U-M SEAS) Assistant Professor of Practice in Landscape Architecture Lisa DuRussel, alongside her students and collaborators, is passionate about ensuring.

U-M study: Reusable take-out food containers
In the effort to reduce plastic waste in the restaurant industry—single-use takeout containers specifically—University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability researchers compared the lifetime environmental impacts of single-use and reusable food containers. Their findings support the idea that the number of times a reusable takeout container gets used is a key factor impacting its sustainability performance.
