Soil compaction | UMN Extension
Soil compaction | UMN Extension
What is compaction?Soil compaction occurs when soil particles are pressed together, reducing pore space between them (Figure 1). Heavily compacted soils contain few large pores, less total pore volume and, consequently, a greater density.A compacted soil has a reduced rate of both water infiltration and drainage. This happens because large pores more effectively move water downward through the soil than smaller pores.

The Cornell Climate Smart Farming program (climatesmartfarming.org) is an innovative resource for farmers and advisors interested in learning more about impacts of climate on agriculture in the Northeastern U.S., and using decision-support tools to inform decision making. The CSF website provides interactive tools and climate information to improve sustainability on farms and reduce the risks to agricultural production associated with climate variability and change. CSF also offers talks and training programs for farmers, shares videos of farm case studies and program recordings on our Youtube channel, and provides updates via our social media channels. ClimateSmartFarming (CSF) is a unique partnership between Cornell University, Cornell Cooperative Extension, the AI-LEAF Institute, and the USDA Northeast Regional Climate Hub. The climatesmartfarming.org website is maintained by Cornell's Earth & Atmospheric Sciences Department. Thank you for your interest in ClimateSmartFarming!
