Mathew Hounsell is researching at the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney. His research focuses on data analytics and developing holistic solutions for transport systems. Mathew became a community advocate for sustainability, specialising in advocating for efficient and accessible transport networks, especially in regional NSW where minimal public transport creates barriers to accessing tertiary education, employment, health care, and social connections. While conducting his own research into the national public transport network, it became obvious to him that there was very little reliable data available to operators and planners. Leveraging his engineering experience, he developed ideas on using sensors and ticketing systems to extract empirical data and information on transport usage and demand. Prior to joining UTS, Mathew worked in the software industry for 15 years creating Applications, Systems and Embedded Devices.
