Bio
Born in 1967 in Bad Homburg and raised in Bavaria, Stephan Maass spent two defining decades in Vienna before returning to Bavaria in 2012. Few percussionists move as freely between musical worlds as Stephan Maass. With over 700 recordings — from Michael Shrieve's Drums of Compassion with Zakir Hussain, Airto and Jack DeJohnette to Carla Morrison’s Toda una Vida for HBO Max, or Colin Towns' Mask Orchestra — his work is defined by stylistic range and a producer’s perspective. He teaches jazz percussion at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz/Austria and was nominated among the Top 5 in the World Percussion category in the Modern Drummer Readers Poll 2024.
