Mommy Powers

2 12 2014

I gotta start by saying that not a whole lot makes me genuinely laugh out loud. However, last night I was definitely laughing. In fact, Spencer is pretty darn good at making me laugh.

We have a rule in our house about no running. Running is for outside. With a family of six + 3 dogs it’s too crowded for running around, and besides, laminate floor + stocking feet = sore bums.

Anyway, I had to ask Kaylissa and Xander to stop running. Right after, Spencer was running around. I called him to me and reminded him not to run in the house. He said “yes ma’am,” then turned on his heel and ran off down the hallway. I called him back and again reminded him not to run. This time he calmly walked away but I could hear him running once he was around the wall. I could easily hear his feet. I called him back again. As he came toward me he asked “Aww, can you see me through the wall or something?!” After that he managed to walk instead of run.

I was definitely laughing. Earlier that night he’d had a similar question. I never answer directly. I always tell him I just have mommy powers.

1st Grade

Spencer was so very excited to be going to school today. He was excited about new school clothes to wear today, his new lunch and bento box, his new drink bottle, and especially his new school. Despite the fact that we live a block and a half away from an elementary school, he is attending a school that is 13 miles away. He’s so excited to learn French and I’m so happy to hear that because he has refused to let me teach him ever since he was two. I have a feeling that he is going to respond to the dual immersion really well. What he’s going to struggle with is the fact that I made him come home, put things away, sit down to do homework, and then one chore before he could do anything else. Apparently school was better than being at home! And that’s okay, I’m glad he loves school and had a great first day.

Easter Snapshot

Spencer is growing into such a handsome young man!

The boy is convinced that he has been but by a spider and is really becoming Spiderman. Spiderman is now more beloved than Superman. Whoda thunk?

I think his favorite thing on Easter was the bubble set he got from Aunt Deanna and Co.

Happy Easter!

He Believes

7 12 2013

When we talk about Christmas in our home, we do not talk about the commercialized Santa Clause whose face is plastered on everything this time of year.

We talk a lot about baby Jesus’ birth. We talk a bit about St Nicholas, a charitable bishop who inspired today’s St Nick.

And yet, the magic of a child’s imagination and wonder is so inspiring and precious.

A Christmas Hug

Spencer could not contain his excitement when he saw Santa Clause sitting in his chair, waiting to talk to him personally.

” Santa!” Spencer exclaimed as he ran and threw his arms around the stranger in red.

And yet, if you ask Spencer, he’s not a stranger at all.

” I know Santa,” he’ll say, ” I’ve been to his house!”

In this house, it’d seem, we believe.

Rite of Passage

I can’t even believe that my BABY is old enough to have lost a tooth! He was so, so concerned about his loose tooth, thinking that it was because he hadn’t brushed his teeth well enough.

A hug was necessary after he broke down in tears. He was terrified it was going to hurt. After I convinced him to let me pull it out (by promising him a popsicle), he broke down in tears at the sight of his mouth filling with blood. He was very upset when he saw blood on his little tooth. He was equally upset when I told him that his other bottom tooth was loose.

Le sigh. How is he growing up so quickly?! What’s the going rate for teeth these days?

Spidey Spencer

After a sleepover at Oma’s, Spencer loved watching the soldiers in the Pioneer Day parade that went past Oma’s house. I think the family riding unicycles was another highlight for him.

Once we got to the park Auntie Cami wanted to take the kids to get their faces painted. Spencer wanted a Spiderman mask so badly but there was no way anyone was paying $10 for it. Lucky for him, the face painter was willing to do a partial mask for the $4 price m. Lucky boy.

Then we went and played Bingo where Spencer won a Spiderman fishing pole! He was so excited!

I have been working on letting Spencer have a little more freedom and therefore allowed him to go back and forth from our picnic tables and om the playground which he did really well with. He kept forgetting to tell anyone when he’d leave for the playground but I kept an eye on him so I always knew where he was anyway. I’m proud of him for being responsible enough to mostly stay within the boundaries we’d established.

Brothers

28 05 2013

My boys love each other and I am so lucky to get to watch them be brothers. I’m sure it helps that Spencer craves having the spotlight on himself and Xander thinks Spencer is the best ever.

Spencer likes being near Xander and Xander likes doing whatever Spencer is doing. It’s cute when it works out, it’s a bit frustrating when things the 5 year old is doing is not something the 1 year old can do or when I have to make baby things exclusive and the 5 year old can’t do them.

Spencer is definitely Xander ‘s favorite. I feel sad for Kaylissa sometimes because the boys already exclude her from things. Good thing she and I can always play ” school” together, or whatever she chooses.

I’m lucky to have such wonderful boys!

Please Wait

I was sitting on the couch when Spencer decided he was going to sing a song he had made up. Really, he was making it up right then, right there.

He stood in front of me, sang about 3 words and then put his hand to his head and said ” Just a minute, I’m buffering.”

Yes, much laughing ensued. I love watching kids figure out vocabulary, especially when it involves technology.

P.S. Check out this pic of him at Color Vibe. Fun, right??

Prayer

17 04 2013

” Dear Heavenly Father,

I thank thee to please count all of my blessings because I never remember the number anymore.

Amen.”

One side is how precious this child’s prayer is. Sweet huh? Had me laughing.

On the other hand, he really tries to count and number his blessings which, if I think of him as Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, is pretty endearing in itself.
