It was a busy morning for the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners as the second meeting for June was held. A full recap of what took place is below …
Honoring dedicated service to the community
Commissioners opened by recognizing county staff who had reached important milestones in their respective careers, including one retiree with 24 years of total service and eight other staff members who have a combined 90 years of continued service. Additionally, Commissioners welcomed five new team members who recently joined the organization. Whether starting, continuing, or concluding a career, we are grateful for everyone’s commitment to serving the community.
Hearing for the 2026 Capital Bond for New Hanover County Schools
Commissioners also held a public hearing regarding the proposed $320 million bond to fund capital projects for New Hanover County Schools. If approved by voters, the bond would fund numerous projects across the county, including a master plan to renovate New Hanover High School, construction of a new Trask Middle School, a new Mary C. Williams Elementary School, and more.
A $116 million grant provided by the New Hanover Community Endowment to offset current bond obligations means the new bond would only add an additional one-half of a cent to the proposed tax rate for Fiscal Year 27-28. Commissioners unanimously approved the bond order, placing it on the ballot for consideration this November.
That’s not all …
Commissioners concluded the meeting by filling vacancies on boards or committees that provide guidance on an array of community issues. More information regarding these boards and committees or how to get involved is available here.
