A Journey to Circularity: from Theory to Practice when Tackling Plastic Challenges
The plastic pollution crisis and images of marine animals trapped in plastic waste have deeply concerned many individuals. They often feel overwhelmed by the scale of the problem and unsure of how their individual efforts can make a significant impact. However, it is important to recognize that meaningful change occurs when we combine our small individual efforts and collectively work towards a shared vision for the future.
In this webinar-talk, Savera will share her personal journey of circularity, starting from her startup addressing plastic waste and alternative packaging to her work with the UNDP Headquarters' Global Plastics Taskforce, and her current role as a consultant with South Pole as the APAC Regional Lead for Circular Economy. Through her experiences, she will demonstrate how each step of her journey aligns with the values and perspectives required at different contexts and scales, including individual action, grassroots community projects, national action plans, and corporate strategies for a circular economy.
ABOUT YOUR HOST
Savera Weerasinghe is the founder and CEO of Ananta Sustainables, a sustainable packaging provider in Sri Lanka, involved in community projects around plastic waste and consumption in Sri lanka. She is also the former CEO of MSH Packaging Industries and the co-founder of Waste Action LK [WALK] is a coalition for sustainable waste management.
Savera was chosen as Asia21 Young Global Leaders Class of 2019, and Cosmopolitan Sri Lanka’s 35 Under 35 women in Sri Lanka.
Savera has run workshops both locally and internationally on plastic consumption, sustainable waste management and innovation. She is on the Governing Body of the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging, the Board of Directors for Yash Pakka International, India, the Advisory Board of VS Story, Singapore and was a local advisor for The Incubation Network.
