FAQ

Q: What is Rorschach?

A: Rorschach is a black and white video synthesizer designed to generate abstract, symmetrical visual patterns in real time. It outputs analog composite video and is intended for use with CRT televisions, projectors, capture devices, and modern displays via converters.

Q: Where can I buy Rorschach?

A: Rorschach is available directly from Lumatic Visual Devices and through selected specialist retailers worldwide. Visit the Stockists & retailers page for current availability.

Q: When will preorders ship?

A: We will be shipping both the DIY and pre-built devices out from late Feb to early March 2026, the absolute latest we will ship preorders is 27th March 2026 - Any orders made after 3rd of March will likely ship after 27th March

Q: Does Rorschach work with LZX gear?

A: Yes it does, however the LZX TBC2 does not directly accept Rorschach's output signal (we think this is due to the resolution of Rorschach) however you can still use Rorschach with the LZX TBC2, you simply have to run Rorschach into another device such as Vserpi before sending the signal to the TBC2.

Q: Is Rorschach analog or digital?

A: Rorschach is a hybrid system.

The visual patterns are generated by a programmed microcontroller, then shaped, processed, and output through analog circuitry using resistors, timing networks, and video-level signal conditioning. The final output is true analog composite video, not a digital video file or HDMI signal.

Q: What is the standard voltage of the inputs?

A: 0-5 volts (anything over this is clipped to 0-5 volts)

Q: How would I connect the Rorschach output to my laptop?

A: We use a very cheep (approx £4) AV to HDMI converter and a very cheep (approx £7) capture card which connects to the laptop via USB. We published a blog post about connecting to different devices, read it here.

Q: Does the RCA composite output support the 1v standard for analog TV's and mixers?

A: Yes it does. It didn't at first, however we have now changed some resistors and Rorschach gives a solid output to CRT's and analog mixers.

Q: I have no CV source, can Rorschach be modulated by audio?

A: Yes, Rorschach can be modulated at audio rate (although, hot Eurorack level audio works best), see the demo video here

Q: Can you guys be booked for visual gigs?

A: Yes, we can accept gigs in the UK and internationally, please contact us via our contact form

Q: Will you be launching a Eurorack version of Rorschach?

A: We don't currently have plans to release a Eurorack version of Rorschach, we need to get this first run of Rorschachs shipped, then we can decide what we do next.

Q: Do you have any other new devices in the pipeline?

A: We only have ideas at the moment for video synthesizers, Rorschach was intended to be our relatively simple entry device, we do have plans for a much more complex device, we also have ideas for some more basic utility devices, we need to get this first run of Rorschachs shipped, then we can decide what is next.

Q: Does Rorschach have a video input?

A: No. Rorschach is a signal generator, not a processor. It creates visuals internally and outputs them via composite video. It does not accept external video or camera inputs.

Q: What video output does Rorschach use?

A: Rorschach outputs composite video via RCA (phono).
This is compatible with:

  • CRT TVs
  • SCART adapters
  • Composite-to-HDMI converters
  • USB capture devices
  • Video mixers that accept composite

Q: Can I use Rorschach with modern TVs or projectors?

A: Yes. Most modern displays do not have composite inputs, but Rorschach works well with:

  • Composite-to-HDMI converters
  • Capture devices
  • Projectors with legacy video inputs

No expensive or specialist converters are required.

Q: Can I record or stream Rorschach’s output?

A: Yes. You can record or view Rorschach using:

  • USB capture devices
  • VLC Media Player
  • TouchDesigner (free for non-commercial use)
  • Resolume Arena and similar VJ software

Rorschach does not require proprietary software.

Q: Do I need expensive software to use Rorschach?

A: No. Rorschach works perfectly as a standalone visual instrument connected directly to a display. If you want to capture or process the output, there are free and affordable software options available.

Q: What is the difference between PAL and NTSC?

A: PAL and NTSC are analog video standards that differ in timing and frame rate.

Even though Rorschach is black and white, the timing still matters for compatibility with displays and capture devices.

  • PAL is standard in the UK and Europe
  • NTSC is standard in the US and Japan

Q: Which should I choose: PAL or NTSC?

A: Choose the standard that matches the first device you will connect Rorschach to, especially if you’re using CRTs.

  • UK / EU CRTs → PAL
  • US / Japan CRTs → NTSC

If you are only using modern displays or capture devices, either standard will usually work.

Q: Does PAL or NTSC change how the visuals look?

A: No. There is no difference in image quality, pattern detail, or creative capability. The difference is purely technical (timing and compatibility).

Q: Is Rorschach colour?

A: No. Rorschach is intentionally black and white, designed to explore contrast, symmetry, motion, and structure. This makes it especially effective on CRTs and in analog video chains.

Q: Can I use Rorschach live?

A: Yes. Rorschach is well suited for:

  • Live visual performance
  • Installations
  • Exhibitions
  • Studio experimentation

All controls are hands-on and respond immediately.

Q: Is Rorschach suitable for beginners?

A: Yes. You don’t need prior experience with video synthesis to use Rorschach. It’s designed to be:

  • Tactile
  • Immediate
  • Exploratory

At the same time, it integrates well into more complex setups for experienced users.

Q: Where is Rorschach made?

A: Rorschach is designed and hand built in the UK by Lumatic Visual Devices.

Q: Does Rorschach come assembled?

A: Rorschach is available as:

  • A prebuilt device
  • DIY kits - At the moment these are only available direct from us
