The Olden Domain by Geit

The Olden Domain is a classic piece of geometry that has stood the test of time for roughly 24 years. There are actually two distinct versions of this layout floating around. The first was included in the official OSP Map Pack for the Orange Smoothie Project mod - the competitive foundation that arguably paved the way for CPMA. Then we have this release: Geit's definitive standalone edition. Beyond the different filenames, the structural brushwork is identical; the true variance lies entirely in the item placement and the level shot.

That item placement makes a massive difference, and it will likely dictate which version you prefer. The most striking change is that Geit's edition includes the Railgun, an item completely omitted from the OSP tournament version. Landing a clean, long-range slug from a Railgun remains one of the most deeply satisfying moments in Quake III Arena, which easily makes this version my personal favourite.

Visually, Sock's iconic Egyptian texture set is used to great effect. Geit has applied them intelligently to clarify the structure, utilising the patterns to differentiate space and shape without ever overloading the player's eyes during a frantic firefight.

Bot navigation is flawless. While AI routing might have been an afterthought for some authors back in 2002, a broken AAS (Area Awareness System) ruins a map today, so it is great to see the bot file holding up perfectly.

If you have never played The Olden Domain, now is your chance. Even after more than two decades, it remains a remarkably solid and enjoyable release - especially when you clip someone with a rail shot from across the arena.

SQ3CTF2-Citadel of the Forgotten Sky by Steveo

Important: This release will require a patch file with the default Q3A game engine.

Citadel of the Forgotten Sky was started by Steveo back in 2006 but left unfinished. Picking up the editing tools after 20 years to finally finish the job must have felt like a major bucket list item. As a bonus, the community gets a brand new - yet classic - CTF release to play.

Launching the level for the first time, you are immediately struck by an amazing space skybox. You also notice just how open the map is; you can see directly from one flag to the other. While there are a number of different paths between the bases, many of them are straight runs with zero deviation and only a few points of cover along the way. Expect to be showered with gunfire from almost every weapon in the arsenal.

The best part about this layout is the pure fun factor. Once you embrace the old-school structure, accept the clear lines of sight, ignore the scores, and simply remember that Quake III Arena is now a 26-year-old video game, it all comes together. Loading up, camping the Railgun, and picking off a few bots - only to be ambushed by one you missed - never gets old.

A 2v2 match requires tight teamwork for a successful capture and feels a lot more serious than the absolute chaos of a 3v3 player match. Personally, I enjoyed the higher player load. It gives the map a Deathmatch-with-CTF-attached feeling, which really leans into the fun element.

A 5 minute ambient music track is included that really suits the Sci-Fi environment, and it makes up the bulk of the download.

Ultimately, this is an enjoyable space CTF release with a great retro aesthetic. It's perfect as a warm-up map or for just blasting bots into the void.

Important: This release will require a patch file with the default Q3A game engine.
