Author Adelaide MacKenzie Fuss Explores One Man’s Odd, Uneven Search for Happiness in New Book The Water Men

The American Dream is broken. Meet Shawn McGuire. With vast wealth and deep emptiness he finds himself shipwrecked by his own success. He returns to his hometown of Newport Beach, California in a search for meaning. A return to surfing. Hoping the Pacific will be the cure. Long, sunny beach days are filled with surfing and waiting. Waiting for the next big wave. This well-known beach town attracts a strange breed of people. Shawn ends up rescuing the drowning world around him: A dog, a doctor and a drunk, not in that order. He searches for a girl he once knew and plants trees in the unforgiving desert soil. He tries to reconnect with his aging mother, but she’s busy watching TV. Shawn searches for the vital missing pieces of his soul in the big winter waves of the Pacific, only to find that his soul was never really gone. Merely misplaced.

‘Reviewed by Anna Seaton Huntington, contributing writer to the New York Times and Glamour, author of Making Waves which chronicles her experience as part of the first women’s team to compete for the American’s Cup.

In her superb debut novel, The Water Men, Adelaide MacKenzie Fuss traces a year in the life of businessman Shawn McGuire who has obsessively achieved his lifelong dream of making a fortune before the age of 40 and now finds himself adrift. McGuire moves back to where he grew up, Newport Beach, California and turns to surfing for a cure. From this hometown perspective, McGuire struggles to find meaningful connection between his past, present and future. Along the way, Fuss takes an original and timely approach to McGuire’s search for his life’s purpose and also examines the contemporary themes of spiritual hunger and the fragility and uncertainty of human bonds.
