Baptism Day

Ack! It’s blurry! But…at least they’re both smiling!

My baby boy is baptized! I can hardly believe this too-smart-for-his-own-good little man is 8 already.  Seeing both my guys in all white really moved me. I’m so very grateful that we have the gospel in our lives.

Style by Siri

Here we have a lovely light green shirt, with blue pants featuring a turtle print, and pink flower sandals to top it off.

Since Siri started school this year, I’ve had many people say that I should start a blog just to document Siri’s outfits – I don’t know about all that, but I thought it might be neat to showcase it here once in awhile.  She chooses her own clothes, and refuses to wear whatever I pick out – typical girl, I guess?

Carpe Diem

It’s really hard to get Siri to look at the camera!

A few days before Labor Day weekend, I finally got Ben to watch Dead Poets Society.  Besides igniting an intense desire to say “O Captain, My Captain”, we decided we needed to Carpe Diem a bit more (instead of doing the same thing we always doevery weekend).

So first, we headed to EnterTrainment Junction, a huge train display. In addition to all the awesome regular train stuff, they’ve set up lists of hidden things for you to find, such as some trains from Thomas the Tank Engine, or a little figure cleaning the glass case.

Bella “helping” Simon with his turn, as we play Fluxx.

We played board games, and card games together more than usual.

On September 7th, we attended a baptism. It’s kinda a funny story. Back when Ben and I had just gotten married, we were pretty close with this couple, but things happened, we moved, they moved, and we kinda lost track of each other. But a few weeks ago (aka 8 years later), I bumped into my old friend, and our families have started hanging out again. Which is great for Simon, because their son is the same age, and now the two of them are thick as thieves.  It’s was his baptism we went to, and Simon was so excited, not just for his new/old friend but his own baptism is coming up as well.  He can’t wait!

The gang riding the train at the Zoo.

Later that day, my mother-in-law offered to take all of us to the zoo.  It was a really great experience. Siri’s favorite parts were watching the otter swim, and riding the giant carousel.  Simon loved the cheetah experience. Everyone loved the train ride.

It was a great few weeks. But the same old rut is starting to creep back in. Carpe Diem is easy in the beginning, harder to maintain. But We try.

A letter to my son

Dear Simon,

You turned 8 this summer. Next week you’ll be starting the 3rd grade – going to public school for the first time since Kindergarten.

You’re getting older, I can tell by all the little things –

  • You took down the Thomas the Tank Engine wall stickers in your room and traded them in for Super Mario wall stickers.
  • Last year, you “hated” reading, but this year you nearly always have a book in hand. And a chapter book at that!
  • You don’t want need to hold my hand when we cross the street anymore
  • You can make yourself simple food, and wash clothes, I think you know how to handle the computer better than me. You’re pretty independent for an 8 year, in my book anyway.

As you are about to start school next week, my only worry is that you will want to impress people and maybe not be yourself as much.

Don’t you forget the things we learned together –

  • that singing and dancing around is really fun, no matter the music is
  • Being silly and laughing is really fun
  • hugs makes almost everything better
  • you don’t have to like what everyone else likes
  • you’re allowed to have an opinion, but be nice when you express it!
  • it’s ok to mess up! It means you’re trying
  • And I’ll love you, no matter what.
