Thank you so much for considering my auction! I'm sure I'll be delighted by any gifts you make for me, as long as they don't hit my DNWs. I've included some pretty detailed general likes and DNWs in my requests, so I'll just list my fandom-specific likes here, in no particular order.

Carry On | Simon Snow Series - Rainbow Rowell
I love Baz's snarkiness, Simon's dopey goodness, Simon’s and Penny’s friendship, and just about everything about Shep. I’d love to see Simon and Baz’s messy relationship, Baz’s POV on their years as roommates at Watford, Shep teaching Penny and Simon about American magical creatures, or an AU or canon divergence (the Soulmate Goose chasing Simon and Baz toward each other, perhaps?)

Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett
I love Aziraphale and Crowley’s relationship, whether queerplatonic, romantic, or platonic. I love post-canon South Downs cottage works, Arrangement works about A and C in other times and places (particularly time and places we haven't already seen on the show), and wing grooming. Please avoid plot points specific to the TV show (especially season 2 and post-s2 settings).

The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells
I adore Murderbot’s snarkiness, love of media, and desire to avoid messy emotions (not that I’m projecting, but…). Would love a solo fic from Murderbot’s POV, practically anything with Murderbot & ART as long as it’s platonic or QPR, SecUnit 3’s perspective on Murderbot and what it’s like to be a newly hacked security unit, or an exploration of Murderbot’s relationship with the PresAux team, especially Mensah, Ratthi, and Amena. Please note: I haven’t watched the Apple TV show yet, so avoid anything in the show that might be spoilers for a book-only fan.

Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo
I’d love some Crows found family, banter, or heists. I'm opting in for canon-typical violence but no graphic violence beyond what is canon-typical. I’d love Jesper causing chaos for Kaz’s carefully-thought-out plans, or Kaz and Inez finding each other as soulmates.

DCU (Comics)
I love my female DCU characters, and I especially lovelovelove Bea/Tora. I’d love any of my listed characters as DC Bombshells (whether they’ve had canonical Bombshells designs or not), off-duty antics, no-cape AUs or other AU settings.

Questionable Content (Webcomic)
I adore Sam and Emmett, and I’d love to hear more about their goth phase, or whatever new phase they’re in now, or them just hanging out. I’d love Iris’s POV on hanging out with Willow and Yemisi, and I’m curious whether Iris has any self-awareness about their crush on Willow (I’m guessing not, but what’s your take?)

Dimension 20 (Web Series)
My D20 request is specifically on the Starstruck campaign; nothing against the Bad Kids, but I’m more interested in the Gunner Channel’s found family at the moment. Will they enter the Battle of the Brands the next year? Or show me a visit back to Rec 97, Baustin, or Fantanimalland, especially if you can fit in a visit with the Junkmother. Or send the whole Wurst through a Time Quangle to any other D20 setting!

Gilmore Girls (TV 2000)
Luke/Lorelai and Paris/Rory are some of my oldest OTPs! I love the classic Gilmore Girls banter, Paris's sharp tongue (but soft interior), Luke's grumpiness (but soft interior), and Lane’s independence.

The Good Place (TV)
I love Eleanor the Arizona trash bag with surprising depth (give this girl some shrampies!), Jason’s earnest clueless Florida Man-ness, Chidi’s neuroticism, Janet’s cheery brilliance, and Vicky’s pettiness.

Original Work
I love superheroes and supervillains who secretly (and/or reluctantly) like each other (whether platonically or romantically), clueless but kind dudebros, found family, and BAMFs.
mcbangle: Wonder Woman has a band aid for her COVID shot (Default)
Thank you so much for creating for me. I look forward to what you make! I love receiving either fic or art as a gift or treat. Treats are enabled and welcome!

General likes: I love fluff, humor, and tropes, tropes, tropes. My favorite tropes (not exhaustive) include soulmates, friends to lovers, fake relationship, there was only one bed, trapped together, huddling for warmth, banter, bickering, heists, found family, everyone thinks we're already in love, everyone thinks we're just friends but we're actually in love, queerplatonic relationships, trans and nonbinary interpretations of characters.

DNW: Rape/non-con, explicit sex acts, visual depictions of nudity, graphic violence or gore, BDSM, omegaverse, incest, child death, animal death, miscarriage or stillbirth, trichotillomania or skin picking, character bashing.

Two of Us - The Beatles (Song): I love how the lyrics to this song really mirror the changes in John Lennon and Paul McCartney's relationship over time. I'd be happy to receive past John/Paul, John/Paul breakup fic, John & Paul friendship, queerplatonic John and Paul, or OC/OC of any gender combination.

You May Be Right - Billy Joel (Song):
Well, remember how I found you there
Alone in your electric chair
I told you dirty jokes until you smiled
You were lonely for a man
I said, "Take me as I am"
'Cause you might enjoy some madness for a while."

That verse has lived rent-free in my head for ages. Why was character A sitting alone in their chair? Is "your electric chair" a metaphor or or literal? What happened to them? How did character B cheer them up? What is their relationship to each other? Or if that verse doesn't inspire you then I'd love fic or art on the general vibe of sad serious one/wild one. If you make it about your version of the characters in the song, I'd prefer for character B not to be named Billy Joel. Don't feel that you need to stick with the narrator as a man, either; I'm happy with any combination of genders.

Birdhouse in Your Soul - They Might Be Giants (Song): This is such a quirky fun song! I'd love a fic from the POV of the little blue canary nightlight, or the person who lives in that room, art of the blue canary and/or the blue canary imagining themself as their ancestor the lighthouse, or illustrating "not to put too fine a point on it / say I'm the only bee in your bonnet."

Jolene - Dolly Parton (Song): I'm interested in Narrator/Jolene or Narrator & Jolene friendship, or an illustration of Jolene's origin story as described on Drunk History.

Rocket Man - Elton John (Song): I love the loneliness of this song. I'd love a sci-fi fic or art about a lonely astronaut in space.

Rocket Man - William Shatner (Music Video): I just. I love this video so much. Dear creator, even if you matched with me on something else, even if you have no interest in creating anything for this video, please take just under five minutes to enjoy this glorious, strange performance. I have so many ideas: Shatner's thoughts on "Rocket Man" as they relate to his experience with Star Trek (especially his performance of "And all the science I don't understand / It's just a job, five days a week"!!!!), fic or art of the three Shatners from the video interacting outside of the performance as triplets or clones (give them distinct personalities, have fun with it!), art of the performance, or of another character of your choosing doing the performance (as long as it's not Stewie from "Family Guy", that's been done already), maybe a crossover between Shatner's Rocket Man and Elton John's Rocket Man?

Silver Springs - Fleetwood Mac (Song): I adore this song, and I think there's so many directions you could go with it. A sad story of the end of a relationship? A horror story inspired by the lyric "I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you"? A story of a wronged woman? Art of the silver spring's "Blue-green colors flashin'" or "Your shinin' autumn ocean crashin'"? Or RPF about what it's like to be forever tied to an ex, to "never get away from the sound of the [person] that loves you".

I hope you find something to inspire you. Have a great exchange!

Hello, hello!

This year I think I was fairly specific about my fandom-specific likes and DNWs in my requests, so this letter is focused mainly on general likes, dislikes and vibes. This is my first time participating in Fic in a Box, so apologies in advance if I miss anything important!

In general, I like fluff, humor, found family, misunderstood grumps finding community, sweet romance, and tropes tropes tropes. I have enough angst in my own life, so I'd prefer to minimize the angst in fanfic or to give it a happy ending or fix-it.

Medium: I'm open to any of the offered media. If you have some creative idea, feel free to go with it as long as its within the rules! Most of my comments below focus on art, fic, and podfic, but other media are welcome and appreciated.

Art: I love receiving art as a gift! Make art of one of my prompts, or inspired by one of my fics, or something original you dreamed up for one of my requests (that doesn't hit one of my DNWs). But, I do not want to get a redraw or art inspired by one of my own artworks. My internal self-critic speaks loudly and often, and I fear I'd take that as an insult of my own abilities or negatively compare my work to yours, no matter how kindly you may intend it.

DNW nudity, depictions of sex acts, graphic violence, rape/non-con, underage sex, or bestiality.

Fic and other written works: Unless otherwise specified in my requests, please avoid all major Archive Warnings. I'd also prefer not to be gifted smut unless you know me and my tastes well. I love character studies, gen friendship-focused fics, crack and humor, swoony romance, feelings realizations, first kiss/first date, or old-married-couple established relationship domestic fics. I'm generally more interested in character dynamics than plottier stuff unless the plot is character dynamics. I've also tried to propose a few prompts for non-traditional written works if that's what you're interested in writing.

Feel free to write fic inspired by any of my artworks, but I do not want to be gifted remixes of or sequels to my own fic, for the same reasons why I prefer not to receive redraws of my art.

Podfic: I have a blanket statement allowing podfic of my works, but please do use an "Inspired by" link to my fic.

Favorite tropes: Soulmates, fake relationship, there was only one bed, trapped together, huddling for warmth, found family, practically any AU.

General DNWs: Any of the major Archive Warnings (unless otherwise specified in a prompt) but particularly not rape/non-con, gore, omegaverse, BDSM, miscarriage, stillbirth, child death, graphic depictions of trichotillomania or skin picking, significant focus on COVID-19 or other similar pandemics, significant focus on IRL world tragedies, character bashing (even that character who you really really hate and your friends hate too!)
mcbangle: Wonder Woman has a band aid for her COVID shot (Default)
This is my first year participating in Battleship, so I apologize in advance if anything in this letter or my requests don't match typical Battleship protocol. I'm excited to play!

General wants:
  • I'd like either art, fic, and/or podfic for any of my requests unless specified otherwise.
  • In general, I'd prefer anything gifted to me to be rated T or G. M for serious/adult themes is OK but please no graphic sex or violence.
  • I tend to prefer fluff, humor, hurt/comfort that's heavier on comfort than on hurt, angst with a happy ending, found family, and friendship themes, unless otherwise specified.

General DNW:
  • No major AO3 warnings, and no works tagged "Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings" that have content that would otherwise have warranted a major Archive warning.
  • No Explicit works, nor works tagged "Not Rated" that have content that would otherwise have warranted an Explicit rating.
  • For art: no nudity, no depictions of sex acts (even if the details are obscured or cropped out), and no depictions of violence or gore.
  • No BDSM nor Omegaverse themes, even if they are non-explicit.
  • No child death nor miscarriage/stillbirth.
  • No graphic descriptions/depictions of trichotillomania nor skin picking - mention/reference is okay but no depictions of the acts of pulling/picking nor of the urge to do so.
  • Tread lightly (if at all) re: COVID-19 or depictions of similar pandemics (including zombie apocalypse). Brief references to the pandemic as an historic event, how it changed our behavior, or mention of lockdown/quarantine are okay if not the major focus of the work.
  • No character bashing.

Fandom-specific:

Good Omens: I headcanon all of the angels and demons as non-binary and asexual, and Crowley in particular as genderfluid. Depictions of Crowley as genderfluid or femme-presenting would be awesome but are optional.

Check, Please!: Canon-typical anxiety and heavy angst OK as long as they have comfort and a happy ending. No character bashing!

Nikolai Series/Grishaverse: Not much to add to my request other than that I loved Hanne | Ilya's journey, I love Hanne | Ilya/Nina, and I love the Crows.

WWDITS: Canon-typical blood is fine. I love BAMF!Guillermo and Guillermo being on an equal (or higher!) power/respect level to Nandor. I also adore Laszlo being a pontificating blowhard, and I look forward to seeing more of him interacting with Gizmo Guillermo.

Dimension 20: I adore Dungeons & Drag Queens so far. Literally anything involving the Questing Queens would be awesome. Canon-typical violence is fine.

Wednesday: I'm mainly looking for something fairly fluffy here, albeit in-character/canon-typical.
mcbangle: B. Shitty Knight as a antebellum abolitionist (Beaufort Shitty Knight)

I'm so mad that apparently Amazon Prime accidentally leaked spoilers for Good Omens season 2 and everyone's talking about it. So far, I've been lucky enough to avoid anything other than discussions of the fact that there are spoilers, and spoiler warnings with the spoilers below a cut (AS THEY SHOULD BE!) but I'm very worried. I have "spoilers", "spoiler", "Good Omens spoilers" and "GO spoilers" blocked, but I'm worried because blocking spoiler tags are only effective so long as people actually tag their spoilers. In my experience, the more people are discussing something, the less likely people are to actually tag it as a spoiler.

It breaks my heart to do so, but I'm considering blocking the entire "Good Omens" tag until the series comes out a month and friggin' half from now!

For the love of whatever you care about, please tag your spoilers!!! Whether it's for Good Omens or literally anything. It's common courtesy.

Person who's only ever dealt with nails, watching someone tighten screws: Why aren't you using a hammer? Everyone knows you're supposed to use hammers! Hammers are the evidence-based, consensus-approved, best practice!

People who have no experience with tools, screws, or nails: You should listen to that person, they seem to know what they're talking about.

I don't know why I didn't expect The Sandman TV fandom to involve shipping (and self-shipping). After all, it involves a handsome, tall, skinny, moody, dark-haired male lead and many other attractive actors. But...

I realize that Morpheus had lovers, but I suppose I never particularly saw him as a sexual being when I read the comics, and I brought that view to the show as well. It just never really occurred to me to ship him with anyone or even to lust after him, nor that anyone else would, either.

And yet, for the last few weeks my Tumblr dash has been (practically) taken over by Morpheus/Hob Gadling (and to a lesser extent, Morpheus/reader) fanart, fics and gifsets. I'm not opposed to other people shipping Morpheus with Hob or anyone else, but I just don't really get it. And TBH, the frequency of the shipping occurring far more than what I want to get out of The Sandman fandom (cool gifsets, aesthetic appreciation, discussion of themes, how did the show compare to the comics, etc.) is actually starting to detract from my enjoyment of the fandom.

The weird thing is that I've been following the Sandman tags on Tumblr since the show came out in early August, but for whatever reason I didn't notice all the shipping until like 2 or 3 weeks ago. Maybe I wasn't paying attention or the people I follow have changed interests?

Being the data dork that I am, I had a look at The Sandman (TV 2022) and The Sandman (Comics) tags on AO3. Even with the understanding that there almost certainly are fics primarily based on the TV show in the Comics tags, it's interesting how differently the fandom categories are distributed between the TV show and the comics. By my calculation, as of today nearly half of all of the Sandman TV fics on AO3 are categorized as M/M whereas only 20% are categorized as Gen. On the other hand, Gen fics make up a plurality of the Sandman comics fics (39%) while only about a quarter of the Sandman comics fics are M/M.

When I filtered the Sandman (Comics) tags to exclude any dated after the release of the TV show on August 5, 2022, the difference was even more stark. More than half of the pre-TV show fics were categorized as Gen, and only 16% were M/M. In fact, the two most commonly tagged-for relationships in The Sandman (Comics) before the TV show came out were Aziraphale/Crowley (Good Omens) and Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, none of whom are even in The Sandman (but apparently frequently cross over in fanfics).

So, maybe I'm not alone in not having gotten shippy vibes from the comics? If so, then I wonder what changed with the show. Was it the actors themselves? Different chemistry on-screen than on the pages? The influx of newer fans, presumably from a younger generation than the comics fans, and viewing it from a different perspective?

I don't know. There's something sort of sociologically interesting about it. But at the same time, and as handsome as Tom Sturridge is, ehhhhhh, I still can't see myself shipping Morpheus with anyone.

Final, nitpicky note: to me he will always be "Morpheus", not "Dream". Or "Morpheus, Dream of the Endless" wherein I think of "Dream" as akin to a rank or job title. Every time I see or hear people use "Dream" to refer to Morpheus, my initial reaction is usually mild confusion until I remember "oh right, he's also called Dream". But that's just me.

Confession: several years ago, I started reading The Lightning Thief but I never finished it. I remember getting very annoyed by the book, and at some point I decided to stop reading it but I can't recall why.

Recently, not by my choice, my family listened to the audiobooks of The Lightning Thief and the first quarter or so of Sea of Monsters during road trips, so I had a chance to revisit what exactly it was that I disliked about it.

Even now, I can't quite put my finger on it. I could identify the rough cut-off point between "I've already read this" and "this part is new to me", but nothing particularly annoying happened at that point. All I can think of is that there may have been another book I wanted to read, and it may have reached the point that the pros of reading a different book outweighed the cons of not finishing The Lightning Thief.

That being said, yeah, it still annoyed me on the second read-through, just not "stop the book in fury" levels of annoyance.

Rants and some mild spoilers below )

Buuuuuuuut, The Lightning Thief had a legitimately exciting plot that kept us guessing until nearly the end, and both books had extremely cinematic moments. So I guess I'll finish Sea of Monsters and check out the Disney+ series, but I can't see myself reading any of the other books unless the family decides to listen to more PJO books during future road trips.

On a non-annoying note, for years I thought his last name was pronounced "Rear-don", but the audiobook pronounces it like "Rye-or-dan", and my Google searches seem to confirm the audiobook pronunciation, so huh.

I've decided to take a break from blogging. I'm not sure for how long - I could be back in a few days or not for months or longer. I guess it depends on what happens and how I'm feeling.

Considering that I'm pretty irregular about blogging to begin with, I wouldn't have made a big deal out of this break except that my previous post was about having COVID and it might send the wrong message to post about being sick and then disappear. So yeah, I and my loved ones are on the mend and I'm still here even if I'm not here-here.

This past week has been rough, emotionally, and I'm absolutely furious and sad and worried and betrayed by the U.S. Supreme Court gutting reproductive and Miranda rights and the ability to reasonably regulate guns and weakening the separation of church and state. But years of therapy have taught me that I cannot wallow in grief and anger and spend my time reading and blogging about things that upset me without exacerbating my anxiety and depression. Some other people can adequately manage their righteous anger without harming their own personal mental health, but I cannot.

On the other hand, past experience living through other national and international tragedies has taught me that some people will call out anyone who posts silly or happy or funny things as if they do not care about the tragedy of the moment. I care! I care so much I cannot put it into strong enough words! But I care too much, to the detriment of my mental health and I need to look away and distract myself.

So, I'm looking away for a bit. I'll probably still be on Tumblr, occasionally reblogging something that make me smile or laugh, or self care advice, or a meme about whatever media I'm into at the moment (The Umbrella Academy season 3! And Stranger Things season 4 part 2 coming next weekend!). But I'm taking a break from the blogging side of things, and I'm probably not going to wade further into the waters of U.S. politics, reproductive health, gun control and other similar topics for a while.

If you're reading this, then I hope you have a terrific summer or a nice winter if you're in the Southern Hemisphere, and hopefully I'll be back in a while!

Maybe I've been living in a bubble (see what I did there?) but the first few reviews I read of The Bubble were positive, and the cast looked (mostly) great, so I spent 2-plus hours watching this dumb, boring movie when I could have taken a nap. : /

Many of the negative reviews I've subsequently read said that lockdown jokes are no longer timely, but I can't say that was the major flaw of the film. I couldn't watch more than a few minutes of Bo Burnham: Inside and I only got through half an episode of Social Distance because both were much, much too soon for me to bear. Watching quarantine and lockdown jokes in 2022 felt like just the right balance of neither too soon to be retraumatizing but still recent enough that viewers would understand what the characters were feeling without needing it explained to them the way some historical dramas over-explain their context. Overall, I think that aspect was fine, and some of the early quarantine jokes hit well.

The problem was, that was just about all they had: a handful of quarantine jokes, the general premise of being stuck with people you don't particularly like for far too long, and a couple of generic "actors are shallow and Hollywood people are weird" jokes. I doubt there was even 1 hours' worth of content, yet somehow they stuffed it to 2 hours 5 minutes.

There were simultaneously too many characters and not enough for them to do. Characters would come and go, then reappear again near the end, nearly forgotten (twice I had to rewind because I literally could not recall callbacks to minor characters who hadn't appeared in the past hour). The fact that apparently some people could just leave the bubble made it a lot harder to sympathize with Karen Gillam's character's insistence that they were all trapped.

Pedro Pascal had practically nothing to do. David Duchovny and Leslie Mann had an okay-but-predictable plot that ended abruptly long before the movie did, leaving Duchovny just kind of there for the remainder of the film. Keegan-Michael Key did the best he could with what he was given, which was not much. Guz Khan was by far the most likeable character and he did not get anywhere near enough screen time. Iris Apatow was pretty funny and her character had some potential but I ultimately felt like I didn't know anything about her other than "she's a TikTok influencer". There were way too many cameos, most of them apparently done over Zoom by bored actors with nothing better to spend their time on.

Just yawn. Don't waste your time.
mcbangle: Wonder Woman has a band aid for her COVID shot (Glinda Dress)
I realized that I never finished up my thoughts on Bridgerton season 2. I adored it! Even though it changed a particular favorite scene from the book and then utterly diverged from the book plotline (an initial disappointment, I do admit). Ultimately I think its changes to the book plot were for the better: I recall being bored by much of the back half of the book and I think it was wise to avoid that with a different series of obstacles. Plus, I kept finding myself genuinely worried about how they would get out of their current obstacle, something I wouldn't have felt if it had followed the plot of a book I've already read.

I've also always very much preferred lovers being kept apart due to external obstacles over lovers who have absolutely no reason not to be happily-ever-after other than their own stubbornness and inability to communicate. I realize the latter is a beloved romance trope, but I nonetheless dislike it (as I believe I've written about in past properties).

IMO season 2 was an improvement over season 1. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed season 1, but much like the book it was slow in the back half and I found the sudden transition halfway through season 1 from the sensuality of hands nearly touching to nonstop banging to be jarring. I read a negative review of season 2 focused mainly on the fact that it had less sex than season 1 which stated that season 1's sex scenes were integral to the plot and the slow burn and delayed gratification of season 2 meant that it... had... less plot, apparently? I found that statement very odd indeed and not at all consistent with my recollection of season 1 episode 6 being essentially PWP.

Further musings and spoilers for season 2 )

Overall A++ season, better than season 1, highly recommend, would (and probably will) rewatch!!
mcbangle: Wonder Woman has a band aid for her COVID shot (Default)
I'm only 2 episodes into Bridgerton season 2 and I'm loving it so far! I read so many negative Nancies these last few days, saying "Bridgerton wasn't as good as you remembered" or whatever but it's just so fun.

I am a bit biased here: I've only read 2 Bridgerton books, and The Viscount Who Loved Me was the first and my favorite. I cannot wait for a certain scene - will it be in episode 3??? Here's hoping!!

I love me a smart-mouthed lady so of course I've adored Kate from her very first appearance. And Anthony is so much more interesting this season than last! (I mean, if he wasn't, it would be a pretty big problem...)

I wasn't expecting Colin to return to town so soon, but I am loving it. That scene where he told Pen he was conversing with someone very important... himself! And told her he's sworn off women but she doesn't count because she's just a friend! Oh, kill me! Romancing Mister Bridgerton for season 3, please????

ETA after watching episode 3: Spoilers for episode 3 and for the book )

ETA after watching episode 5: This... is not going the way I remember it from the book at all. 🤔
mcbangle: Kent Parson holds his hand up to the side of his face and smirks (Exasperated Kent)
I watched Don't Look Up today. It was very smart, funny, well written and well acted (especially Mark Rylance; it's rare for someone to upstage Meryl Streep, but he did it). And painful.

The scene where Spoiler ) was painful to watch in light of the allegations that the CDC's new guidance on isolation and quarantine was dictated by Delta Airlines.

It was so, so scarily plausible - from the disdain for science unless it's politically convenient and "sexy" (and of course the only person allowed to be a "sexy scientist" is the white man), to science denial and politicization (and accusing people who believe the evidence of their senses as being the real ones politicizing the situation), to the morning news media's need to keep it light even when discussing an extinction-level event, to an angry woman being immediately written off as crazy, to "we support the jobs the comet will bring," to uber-wealthy elites trying to convince the working class that the opposite political party are the real elites, to "they want you to look up because they're looking down their noses at you" to... just all of it.

Anyway, it deserves many awards, it's smart and funny but I don't know whether I can recommend it? I suppose it depends a bit on how sensitive you are to (metaphorical) references to current events. I'm guessing the filmmakers had no idea it would be so current when they were making it.

Other than that, my biggest critique - not of the movie but of most of the reviews I've read is that Rob Morgan often gets listed so low in the cast list when he's essentially the tritagonist. I get it, he's much less famous than even many of the cameo appearances, but Dr. Teddy was the heart and soul of that movie!

In case anyone needs to know how it ends in order to decide whether to watch it, I'll let you know behind the cut.

Major spoilers ) If you decide to watch it then be sure to continue for mid-credits and end-credits scenes.
mcbangle: Wonder Woman has a band aid for her COVID shot (Default)
I cannot emphasize enough how much I enjoyed Save the City, the song the Barton family watches at "Rogers: the Musical" on Hawkeye episode 1. When I saw the musical in the previews, I worried it would be an intentionally-cringey unfunny musical "parody" a la "Stars Hollow: the Musical". But as much as Clint hated it, based on that one scene alone it looks like a musical that would legitimately be a hit, not because "ha ha, musical theater fans have no taste" but because it looks damn fun and that song is beyond catchy.

"Save the city, help us win! / Save us all from the state we're in" and "I can do this all daaaaaaaaay" have been living rent-free in my head ever since I saw it.

As soon as I heard it, I was sure that "Save the City" was written by someone from the musical theater world, so it was no surprise to me at all that it was written by the same composer-lyricist duo who wrote "Hairspray". It has that same mix of parody, earnestness and parody-of-earnestness and it's damn smart.

So with no further ado, my favorite lyrics from "Save the City":

The opening verses sung by (it sounds like) Adam Pascal and Ty Taylor. I assume it's sung by them, because (a) I definitely recognize Adam Pascal's voice, (b) they're credited as "Lead New Yorkers" and (c) from the context the opening verses sound like they're sung by everymen rather than Captain America, but Genius credits those verses to Captain America. Then again, Genius also credits the lyrics to Adam Pascal, which is isn't accurate either. I like to imagine that the "Lead New Yorkers" are the Greek Chorus of the musical, and that both of them and the actor who plays Captain America would be nominated for the Tony Award for Lead Actor - Musical, splitting the fandom into intense debate, but that Adam Pascal would ultimately win the Tony.

"The day looks tough, but we're New York strong / And eight million people just can't be wrong" and all of the New York-pandering lyrics, because you know that Broadway musicals love pandering to NYC audiences.

OK, one more because this entire verse is brilliant both in its parody of Broadway NYC-pandering as well as its presumable sincerity given it was written during the COVID shutdown, when an awful lot of New Yorkers were feeling exactly this:
Yes, the city is on the brink
And it may smell, but we like that stink
We lived through the '80s, and this too shall pass
Avengers assemble, and kick some ass!

"We love all kinds, but Loki you don't belong": LMAO

"While Hawkeye seems cool, like a really nice guy" after praising all of the rest of the Avengers' powers. Again, LMAO. Perfect both because it was written with the intention of being annoying to Clint but also, eh, I'm not a fan of MCU Hawkeye so it made me laugh. Too bad the sound cut out just before that line, WTF.

"Hulk, you know the magic word is / Hulk, you know the magic word is / Hulk, you know the magic word is / Smash, smash, smash!" This is the one part that I assume would not be in an actual show; it's just a little too on-the-nose and if the entire song were like this I'd probably hate it, but coming 3 1/2 minutes into an incredibly smart song, it works for a laugh.

"If the city is trashed when you take your bow / We'll blame you then, but you're good for now": I see what you did there ;)

My only complaint is Hulk's costume as green hoodie and face makeup. Sure, some shows use that kind of minimalism, but nothing in the set design nor the rest of the characters' costumes suggested this to be a minimalist show. Plus, unless the hood is clipped to his hair, it would constantly be in danger of falling down during dancing and fight sequences. I have to assume they tried out a couple of other Hulk costumes that didn't work until they were nearly out of time and someone said "just throw a hoodie and some face paint on him!"

ETA other thoughts on Hawkeye episodes 1 and 2 so far: Hailee Steinfeld is incredibly charming, and so far is carrying the show for my Jeremy Renner-nonliking-self. Her hair color is putting me off a bit, the same way that Jennifer Lawrence's hair color put me off a bit in The Hunger Games. It's like 1 or 2 shades too dark to work.

Speaking of The Hunger Games, loved the shoutout to Katniss Everdeen. I have to assume the sorts of fanboys who think themselves to be experts without actually knowing or caring anything about female characters are unfavorably comparing Kate to Katniss, despite Kate predating Katniss by 3 years

Only 2 episodes in to date, and Kate is a serious fashion icon. That floral suit in episode 2? To die for.

Did I hear wrong, or is one of Kate's college friends named Greer? Hoping she'll show up more in the later episodes and it's not just a one-off Easter egg or worse, a coincidence.

The internets are telling me that Kate's mysterious secretly-skilled-at-fencing potential stepdad "Jack" is actually The Swordsman, a character I admittedly know very little about. Apparently he's bounced back and forth between villain and hero over the years, so I'm curious to see what direction they take him in.

Lucky the Pizza Dog is clearly the true star of the show, though! Can they make a spin-off featuring Lucky, Goose and... IDK, are there any other pets in the MCU? If not, then they need to start introducing them so they can make an all-pet spinoff-stat!

How did I not know about "Young Rock" until today????

OMG!!!!

I love Dwayne Johnson! I love Nanatchka Khan! I love Andre the Giant!!! And that was Randall Park in the promo; I can't tell whether he has a brief cameo or is part of an ongoing narrative framework but I love him too!

I hope you're having a happy and quiet day, whatever you celebrate. The immediate fam and I are at home, and we've Facetimed with my parents and in-laws. I'm hoping it will stay quiet through the weekend (knock on wood).

Have a nice day, whatever you're up to!

TIL that "A Recipe for Seduction", the KFC/Lifetime joint movie, is only 16 minutes long and streaming on YouTube. TBH, I'm not surprised by the length. The trailer felt like a complete movie in and of itself.

Anyway, now that I know where to find it, obvs. I need to watch it and pseudo-liveblog my thoughts.

My husband's reaction to my telling him my plan to watch it: At this time of night?
Me: It's 16 minutes long.
Him: It'll make you hungry, and KFC is closed.
Me: That's really your top reaction to my telling you that I'm going to watch the sexy Colonel Sanders movie?

16 seconds in: Oh shit, this really is food porn.

So this is like a telenovela? Or is this what Lifetime movies are always like? I haven't watched a Lifetime movie in years.

1:37 - I'm confused about the Black guy with glasses. Is he the Token Gay Friend, or is he dating the woman sitting next to him?

2:38, Mario Lopez bringing the ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* dimples *:・゚✧*:・゚✧, swoon!

2:45 and I'm already confused. If they're in piles of debt and weeks away from the banks repossessing their house (yeah, I rewound to get that line right), then how/why did they hire the head chef from an exclusive French restaurant? Also, what French restaurant serves Kentucky-style fried chicken?

2:55 - Nice eye flirting. I approve.

4:27 - Douchebag Preppy's sweater-tied-around-the-neck's sleeves are way too long. Like, weirdly long. Has anyone ever worn their sweater tied around their neck that long? I lived through the 1980s and I don't ever remember anyone wearing their sweater so glaringly wrong.

Oh, please tell me Mario Lopez will call whatshisname "Preppy" at least once. Please!

4:40 - "Beat it, crouton," lmaooooooooo, lololololol! Obvious Villain Archetype is growing on me! Also, someone in the wardrobe department appears to have fixed the absurd sweater sleeves situation.

4:57 - "Don't call me crouton." IT GETS BETTER!

5:10 - I called it, Token Gay Friend.

6:04 - "What should I do, should I leave Billy for Harland?" I mean, your boyfriend's clearly an asshole and you clearly don't like him, plus he's giving off "abusive villain in a Lifetime movie" vibes so I'd go with yes, leave him but why jump immediately into a relationship with another dude you literally just met that morning? I mean, aside from the fact that it's the entire plot of this 16-minute movie.

Also, is Token Gay Friend about to get axe-murdered? Why do I have a feeling like Token Gay Friend is about to get axe-murdered?

6:49 - Nope, the sweater sleeves are fugged up again. Is this A Look I'm unaware of? Or is it just visual shorthand for "even douchier than most douches"?

7:21 - Day drinking is not a good look for you, Weird Sleeves Douche.

7:34 - I get it, Colonel Sanders has a secret recipe. How many times can you say "secret recipe" in 16 minutes?

7:39 - At least one more time, apparently.

Spoilers )

Overall, it was not bad? But not great either? I'd say watch it for the experience and because it's short. The best parts were:
  • Food porn
  • It's short
  • Dimples
  • Surprisingly entertaining one-liners from Douchey McBadSweater

20020!!

I finished 20020: The Future of College Football last night and wow, I can't believe I have to wait another... couple of months? year? to read the end of this story!

A few years ago, I was reading over the Yuletide fandoms and was struck by 17776: What football will look like in the future, probably primarily because it was at or near the top of the list, the title is 1 digit off from 1776, and I couldn't imagine what football would have to do with the founding of the United States (answer: nothing). All the same, I didn't rush to read it because... football? Eh...

(Of course, my primarily fandom for the last several years has been a webcomic about college and professional hockey players despite my not particularly liking hockey and knowing hardly anything about it, so I shouldn't have been so quick to brush it off.)

After seeing it mentioned in passing a bunch of times, my curiosity finally overtook me and I checked it out, and was quickly sucked into this amazing multi-media story. Still, a few years later only the name and a few memorable moments really stuck with me. So, when I heard there was a sequel released, I bookmarked it but I didn't rush to it.

I wish I had.

I absolutely adored 20020, moreso than 17776. I'd say the biggest flaw of 17776 to me, and I would only call it a flaw in retrospect, is that none of the humans were particularly interesting or developed. When 20020 opened with a conversation between two new humans, I felt very "meh" and didn't pick up interest until Nine, Ten and Juice re-entered the narrative.

But then.

The video at the end of Chapter 1 grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go.

And then Chapter 7 introduced a variable I hadn't even considered: Spoiler ) By the time I got to Chapter 7 could not put it down! Well, "it" being my laptop, I guess. And Chapter 12 Spoiler for Ch 12 ), along with another oh-my-God amazing pass.

And now. And now! And now I am so invested in these humans that I didn't care about 11 chapters ago, and their crazy football game and I can't believe I have to wait who-knows-how-long to read 20021 to find out how it all ends!!!

I want to start by saying that in no way do I criticize people who don't like fluff or prefer angst over fluff. This is just about what I like, not at all about what others like.

Anyway, a few years ago upon returning to fandom after a many-years hiatus, I ran into many people saying essentially "If you like fluff, then you must be a 13 year old kid. Once you know ~the ways of the world~, you'll prefer angst." And, as a 30-something at the time that struck me as a very immature statement. I have gone through various phases of my life in which I proclaimed myself as past the childishness of whatever phase I had just passed through, only to move on to another phase. In fact, I'm sure at some point I'll look back on these days as childish. The idea that "if you like [thing I dislike] then you must be [younger than me]" reads very much like a mid-teen trying desperately to distance themself from something they liked relatively recently.

Personally, I have enough angst IRL. I do like angst, and I write it from time to time, but when I'm most depressed I absolutely crave fluff and humor. So, the idea that people who like fluff don't yet realize "the ways of the world" is incredibly short-sighted and, frankly, offensive to me.

Anyway, this kind-of came to a head after the 2016 U.S. election when I was mega depressed and hopeless and buried myself in the fluffiest fluff I could find. And yet, every now and then I'd come across Tumblr posts that essentially said "If you are reading or writing fluff right now then you might be a Trumpite." Arrrrrrrgh!

Dude.

My dudes.

Not everyone reads or writes fluff because they feel super happy!!!!

For me, fluff is a comfort blanket to wrap myself in when I am upset or scared or depressed. If I am reading and/or writing a shitton of fluff, that is not a sign that I am happy

argleblargl

This post brought to you by: I'm really not sure. I was suddenly struck by the memory of post-2016 US election fannish wank.
