GoodBuilders Season 4

GoodBuilders is GoodDollar’s flagship builder program — a three-month continuous funding round for teams building real products and use cases with G$ on Celo.

Season 3 at a Glance

The Setup

Season 3 ran from February to May 2026. Eleven teams entered; nine completed the program. Two exited before mid-season — honest signal about fit, not failure.

The cohort spanned nine categories: savings, productivity, surveys, decentralised advertising, task marketplaces, governance, DEX infrastructure, food rescue, and goal-staking. Most teams were one to three people, all building on Celo, all with GoodDollar at the core of their products.

The funding structure is meaningfully different from traditional grant programs. Rather than disbursing lump sums upfront, grants streamed continuously through Flow State. Each team’s share was shaped by a weighted model: 50% mentor votes, 25% community votes, and 25% product activity metrics — ensuring no single group could dominate outcomes.

This made the funding mechanism inseparable from accountability. Teams understood exactly how their actions translated to earnings. When they brought their communities to vote, it showed up in their stream. The result was 445.7M G$ disbursed (~$50K USD) , all verifiable on-chain, all earned against real deliverables.

Flow State itself shipped new features mid-season — milestone tracking, a live stats dashboard, a communications centre — reducing friction as teams were actively building.

What the Season Taught Us

What worked

The weekly 1:1 was the program. Not a reporting call — a relationship call. It was the early warning system for teams that were stuck, the nudge to update milestones before vote windows, the thing that surfaced problems before they became exits. Accountability came from people, not process.

Building publicly created real stakes. Six bi-weekly demo days, all recorded. Show your numbers, get live feedback, commit to what’s next on record. That rhythm gave teams something concrete to build toward — not just funding to spend.

Treating teams as partners changed the culture. The teams that grew most felt the most ownership and the most support simultaneously. That combination is upstream of everything else.

Flowstate made accountability structural. When your funding mechanism is also your accountability layer, “the program” and “the work” become the same thing.

What we’d change

Mentorship consistency needs to be enforced, not assumed. The gap between present, consistent mentors and absent ones was wide enough for teams to notice. Explicit attendance expectations and voting deadlines need to be agreed before the season begins.

Milestones need numbers from day one. Without numeric targets set upfront, there’s no consistent benchmark for measuring or comparing growth across teams.

The stats dashboard should precede the program, not arrive mid-season. We lost clean early data and couldn’t spot patterns quickly enough to act on them.

Community activation is not a byproduct of product growth. FocusPet had 500+ users and 51 Flow State voters. Balaio had 75 users and 16. Product traction and ecosystem engagement don’t move together automatically — both require deliberate effort.

Because mentors hold 50% of voting power, their involvement directly influences how funding flows. This creates a strong incentive for both sides to stay engaged.

Making mentorship more consistent, visible, and impactful across all teams remains an area of focus.

🔍 What 2 Months Have Shown

What’s working:

• Weekly check-ins and biweekly demo days have created tight feedback loops — builders ship, users react, teams iterate
• Mentorship is a clear driver of progress — the teams moving fastest have the most active mentor relationships, and because mentors hold 50% of voting power, that engagement directly shapes funding
• The objective metrics layer gives mentors and voters a shared baseline: on-chain activity, user growth, and transaction volume, not just a compelling update
• Building in public keeps teams accountable to the community, not just to the program

What needs work:

• Voting consistency isn’t uniform — some teams actively mobilize their communities, others don’t, and the gap in funding reflects it
• Some teams are building well but haven’t cracked distribution yet
• Two teams left the program: one came in too early-stage for the pace; the other had to pivot mid-season and couldn’t deliver on what they’d committed to. Both are useful signals about what readiness actually requires

These aren’t blockers — they’re the system working as intended, surfacing what needs to change.

What’s Next

Two epochs left. The focus is on helping teams find and reach real users — strengthening distribution and building on what the first two epochs revealed.

The goal hasn’t changed: back the builders actually creating value, grow the G$ ecosystem, and help them scale it. And we’re already taking these learnings into Season 4. The next season will focus more on growth, open the door to smaller projects, and work more closely with builders from day one — so teams feel supported, not just evaluated.

What’s New in Round 2

This round marks a deeper collaboration across the Celo ecosystem to test a new, dynamic model for allocating grants; one that’s transparent, community-driven, and responsive to builders’ actual progress.

It’s made possible by combining powerful infrastructure and aligned partners:

• Streaming logic from Flow State,
• Contribution tracking from Karma GAP,
• Extra funding and visibility from CeloPG, and
• G$ as a natively streamable SuperToken

This isn’t just about funding. It’s about creating a more flexible, performance-based way to support builders as they work while making the community an active participant.

How it works: The Flow Council

The allocation mechanism for Round 2 is called Flow Council. With it, GoodBuilder mentors and verified GoodDollar users will directly vote on how a stream of $70K USD + 50K Celo in G$ is allocated over 3 months.

Accepted grantees will receive real-time, continuous G$ payouts based on the % of outstanding votes they have each second! The more votes, the larger the grantee’s relative stream. This creates a model that rewards consistent output and real-time participation — encouraging builders to keep shipping and stay engaged throughout the round.

To support informed voting, Karma GAP is integrated to track grantee activity and updates. This gives voters a transparent view into what each builder is working on and helps ensure streams are earned through real progress.

G$ is already the most widely held Superfluid SuperToken, meaning it can natively support streaming. The partnership with Flow State brings the promise of programmable money closer to reality — enabling sustainable support for builders and driving impact across the GoodDollar ecosystem.

GoodDollar V4: Key Features and Enhancements

GoodDollar V4 introduces several major changes to the protocol. Below is a summary of the key upgrades and their impact on the system, based on the proposal approved by the Community, which outlines the changes in full detail.

1. Core protocol contracts are now native to Celo
With the help of Mento Labs, the GoodDollar protocol has fully transitioned from Ethereum to Celo — all contracts, minting, and Reserve logic are now live on Celo. Eliminating high Ethereum gas fees simplifies the system and makes it more accessible to users. This transition has been made through a new deployment of the GoodDollar Reserve, ensuring a fresh start with enhanced scalability and improved performance on Celo.

2. G$ minting is back — and happening on Celo
Minting has been paused since December 2023 due to the Ethereum Reserve exploit. With the launch of GoodDollar V4, minting is restored and now takes place directly on Celo, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the protocol and its distribution.

3. The Reserve is live — now on Celo
Previously, the Reserve operated on Ethereum, but high gas fees made it inaccessible to most users. In V4, the Reserve is redeployed on Celo and funded with 200,000 cUSD, offering affordable access to anyone wanting to buy and sell G$. Each time G$ is purchased, it triggers the minting of new G$.

4. A new Reserve currency: cUSD
The Reserve currency has shifted from cDAI (on Ethereum) to cUSD (on Celo), aligning with the protocol’s new home. As cUSD is native to Celo, this change reduces complexity and improves system efficiency.

5. Protections for Reserve stability
Outflow caps are set at 40K cUSD per week and 80K per month to prevent Reserve depletion. A 10% exit fee applies to redemptions and will gradually decrease to 5%, based on governance feedback and usage patterns.

6. The Reserve restores liquidity
With the Reserve now live on Celo, it becomes the primary liquidity market for G$ directly within the same chain where the majority of G$ distribution happens. This restores liquidity, enabling improved price stability and a smoother experience for users buying and selling G$ on Celo.

7. G$ distribution continues across chains
While Celo is now the minting chain, Fuse continues to support UBI claims. So although the new GoodDollar will not allocate G$ to Fuse, Fuse has a mechanism where a portion of the rewards from Fuse staking is sold for G$ and then used for UBI distribution.

8. Updated bridge infrastructure
With Celo now serving as the native minting chain, the bridge logic has been updated. The new burn/mint system supports minting on Celo and improves the transfer of assets between Celo, Ethereum, and Fuse. The old Fuse –Ethereum bridge has been deprecated. The G$ token continues to be deployed on Ethereum, Celo, and Fuse.

9. Yield sources and DAO governance
In V3, the yield was sourced from third-party staking protocols on Compound and Aave. In V4, the DAO will propose yield sources for the Reserve, providing more flexibility for the protocol’s growth. Even without external yield sources, the Reserve continues to function and triggers G$ minting through user purchases and the Reserve expansion rate, ensuring G$ is minted as needed to support UBI distribution.

10. G$ Price
The launch price of G$ in V4 is $0.0001, the same as the original launch price. The addition of funds to the Reserve makes this possible, ensuring that minting resumes and the protocol continues to function smoothly.

The Development phase is an opportunity for teams and builders to learn, grow, and refine their projects with expert guidance and ongoing feedback. While participation is encouraged, it’s completely optional — builders have the freedom to develop independently and get ready for the QF Round at their own pace.

🎯 Round Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, your project must integrate G$ in at least ONE of the following ways:

✔️ Have a merged PR as part of the Scouts Game.
✔️Implement face verification flow + claim button
✔️Use the G$ Identity SDK (face verification) in a meaningful way
✔️Provide services or subscriptions using G$
✔️Leverage G$ supertoken capabilities

For new dApps:

✔️ Your dApp must be live and fully functional at the time of application submission.

✔️ DeFi investment apps must ensure money-out transactions are in G$. Example: If your dApp allows users to convert G$ to Celo for staking, withdrawals must convert Celo back to G$.

⚠️ Trivial integrations, such as simple G$ integrations without added functionality, will not qualify. Projects should demonstrate meaningful innovation and utility by contributing to the growth, adoption, or usability of G$ within the ecosystem.

💡 Successful projects align with GoodBuilders’ mission to expand G$ adoption, create new use cases, enhance platform functionality, and improve accessibility through innovative applications, integrations, or infrastructure development.
