Members of the InpulseX Community, despite the recent event involving Starter.xyz & InpulseX IDO pools, the IPX management team is responsible for looking after our Community. This article provides the step-by-step process for claiming the tokens from July 2nd, 2022.

The team has tested a few different methods and platforms using a set of criteria assessing the platform/company’s/team reputation, security focus and ease of use of UI. The platform that met these criteria is the vesting-as-a-service by Team Finance by Trustswap.

The service provided by Team Finance removes the need to wait for the IDO distribution to happen on a given day, now allowing the user to claim their tokens hourly! It empowers the community member to choose when best work for them to have access to their tokens.

The process is straightforward:

InpulseX will allocate only one month’s worth of tokens for the claim period of July 2022, starting on July 2nd, 0:15 am British Summer Time. The reason is to guarantee the new system works for the Community. Assuming a smooth sequence of claims, from August 2nd 2022, the pending balance of the tokens will be allocated to the user wallets.

The tokens owed to InpulseX by Starter will be allocated in the last month of Claims (October 2022), giving the IPX solicitors time to challenge Starter.xyz legally to receive the balance stolen — unfortunately, which has not been a straightforward exercise so far.

If Starter falls short of their responsibilities, the InpulseX team will honour the outstanding balance guaranteeing the Community will receive precisely the initial amount acquired in IDO. For the InpulseX team, the Community will always be the priority.

How many IDO tokens I still have left to claim?

Many people may not know or remember how much IPX they bought on the IDO or how many tokens they have claimed already.

The team has run an entire assessment exercise against the IDO contracts and produced a precise list that provides a snapshot showing the position, per wallet, of the total tokens acquired on IDO, the number of claims against the Starter platform, and the balance outstanding. The result removes all data regarding the Starter attack, leaving behind only legitimate transactions.

The InpulseX team will assess the development of the claims during the first month and adjust the process as required, guaranteeing our Community’s interests are preserved.

Summary

The Starter platform is facing an issue that briefly impacted the InpulseX token (see Starter Medium for more information). An ex-employee using a wallet from Starter managed to gain access to the unclaimed IPX tokens within their platform, which they should not have, causing a brief and unexpected sell-off activity for the token. Unfortunately, Starter did not act promptly on a solution provided by the InpulseX team before the incident that would have avoided it altogether.

The InpulseX project absorbed most of the sell-off activity, mitigating the impact the activity would have on its Community. No issues have been found on the InpulseX platform itself, and the project is now working with Starter to be reimbursed for the costs the event brought to the project.

InpulseX will no longer use the services of the Starter platform, and the lessons learned by this episode only make the project more robust, with a stricter process associated with the engagement of 3rd parties and a new model for the claim process for IDO vesting tokens, managed entirely by InpulseX. FUNDS ARE SAFU, the management team suggested applying an emergency cliff, no tokens will be distributed for the month of June, and claiming activities will resume from July 2nd (including public and private investors).

The event only gives the project the opportunity of making our foundations even more robust, contributing to a brighter future.

How The Situation Unfolded

The InpulseX project, over the course of 4 days — between May 19th and May 22nd, observed an unusual selling activity of a large quantity of IPX tokens that did not seem legitimate. It was not an activity led or influenced by the InpulseX Team, and it was not part of a strategic exercise delivered by the project.

Upon investigating further the unusual selling activity, we concluded it to be directly related to Starter.xyz, and more context is required to help the Community to make sense of everything.

May 3rd

Starter notified InpulseX of the possibility of a disgruntled ex-employee leaving a back door into IDO pools in the Starter platform, which may affect the ones that support the claim process of IPX.

May 4th

InpulseX notified Starter that they could move the balance of tokens from the Pools and that the team would be available to help in any way required moving forward.

May 5th

Starter shared more details about the possible scenario of the attacker extracting tokens from the InpulseX pools on the platform.

The InpulseX Team immediately took action and sent a detailed plan that — once implemented — prevents the risk of tokens being extracted from the pool.

InpulseX did follow up on the plan several times across different days.

The team in Starter did not act on the solution provided by the InpulseX team and did not reply to the many contact attempts made by our team across multiple days.

May 19th

InpulseX noticed an unusual behaviour on-chain and observed that a specific wallet, with the address 0x283B3b8f340E8FB94D55b17E906744a74074cD07, was performing frequent and systematic transactions selling IPX.

InpulseX’s team closely monitored the wallet, assessing the situation in more depth.

May 20th

InpulseX gathered several indications of malicious activities performed by the wallet. The alarming component that caught the team’s attention was that the wallet address had been used to deploy several components of the Starter platform, more specifically IDO pools; therefore, it seems to be a Starter wallet.

Further, into the team’s investigation, it became apparent that the wallet seemed to be involved in blatant malicious activities against several projects, not only InpulseX. The list we uncovered during the assessment shows similar trading patterns against DLD token, Duckie Land Multi Metaverse, Kryxivia Coin, Legion Token (Link to their Medium response), Starchi (a Starter project), Twelve Legions, Unilab Network and Voice Street Token.

InpulseX intensely escalated the situation with Starter, aiming to understand what is going on with their platform and their overall take on the situation.

The Starter leadership team declared that a disgruntled ex-employee was draining tokens from IDO pools that users from many different projects did not claim. Once the tokens had been transferred to the Starter wallet, the attacker dumped them on the market.

The Starter leadership suggested an ongoing collaboration with the InpulseX team and during a Zoom call between the two teams, they released the identity information regarding the ex-employee.

Starter also provided a snapshot of the attacker’s phone number. However, now under a different name:

The Starter wallet managed to steal from the IDO contracts 1,146T IPX tokens, 180 BUSD and its constant sell-off activity on the market removed 111 BNB from the project’s Liquidity pool and market maker’s account.

The InpulseX’s Approach

InpulseX escalated the topic very intensively to the Starter Team and demanded a meeting to allow the Core Team to understand, directly from Starter, what was going on.

Quickly the InpulseX Team realized that the situation seemed far too sketchy, taking into consideration simple judgement points:

• The amount of internal procedural failures and even “common sense” failures when it comes down to the management of internal technical and human resources in the Starter company — the company is unable to certify who an employee is, uncertain even of his/her name
• Lack of fundamental IT systems management best practices for a tech company led by an experienced team — an individual uses a wallet that only he/she had access to the private key and deploys branded platform resources in a company responsible for the capital of 3rd parties and customers?

In conjunction with the collaboration of its extensive network, InpulseX also decided to hire the services of a Cyber Security Response Team based in Israel. Both fronts are aimed to find the culprit responsible for the Starter wallet and the attack, initially targeting Bryan Choo/Pemba Sherpa.

The assertive approach by InpulseX when managing the fiasco caused by Starter became a problem for their leadership team. The founder of Starter, Barchef, decided to unilaterally cease communications with the founder of InpulseX, The Creator, keeping a line of communication opened only with the InpulseX COO Rod — alleging communication issues.

InpulseX sole focus lies on understanding and securing that no other vulnerability or problem could be caused by the lack of professionalism and lack of basic practices by Starter and ran, from the ground up, a review of all its internal and external systems to secure that:

1. The project’s liquidity pool is not at risk. Initially, the InpulseX LP was locked by Starter during TGE.
2. No touchpoints of the InpulseX processes and technology stack are compromised by working with Starter.
3. InpulseX will be able to manage and address all aspects of the IDO claims moving forward for all wallets involved in the IDO that were onboarded by the Starter platform.

During the event of the sell-off of IPX by the Starter wallet, the team focused on protecting the project’s liquidity, engaging Kayron Labs to monitor the activities and absorb the impact caused by the attacker limiting the damage to the PancakeSwap LP and also the InpulseX Community.

The attacker became aware of the unusual behavior performed by the InpulseX team and has chosen to expedite its sell-off activity ending it on Sunday 22nd evening.

The Lessons Learned

One natural question: Why did InpulseX choose to work with Starter?

Before the IDO, InpulseX assessed launchpads based on — track-record, the experience of the teams, flexibility to accommodate IPX whitelist for the presale dedicated to our Community, launchpads that have never been involved in a hacking or security breach, and lastly, a company that a trusted peer would recommend. During the assessment exercise, Starter passed all these checks with no evidence at the time of any issues that could be found.

Considering the project’s sequence of problems with Starter since the IDO till now, we can call it either “lack of luck” or InpulseX being far too diligent and precise, exposing their people/process/tech weaknesses.

By design, InpulseX had chosen to send the tokens for the Starter vesting contracts monthly, despite being asked by the 3rd party — multiple times — to send the tokens for the whole IDO in anticipation and in full. The IPX team’s decision is shown to be the right one and tokens related to upcoming claiming anniversaries are SAFU.

InpulseX was strict before and will become an even stricter company moving forward. We are reviewing our 3rd party engagements entirely on how we work with them, covering the people, the processes and the technology stack involved in each partnership. More profound research on whom we are working with, narrower process and documentation for engagement and operational continuity, and more vigorous technical assessment of the 3rd parties’ abilities are some of the elements we are incorporating effective immediately.

The Future Is Certainly Brighter

The distribution of the month of June 2022 will be moved to October 2022 — via the application of an emergency cliff — effectively extending the IDO vesting schedule for one month, giving the team conditions to thoroughly validate the information provided by the Starter IDO contracts, reconciling each wallet that participated in the InpulseX presale, guaranteeing that the new mechanism that will take place will be 100% accurate.

The incident makes the project even better, being used to revisit and strengthen its foundations.

The situation showed that the weak link was a 3rd party that did not live up to their recommendations, past performance and described public abilities. It was not an issue associated with the InpulseX’s token, internal technical resources, or procedural components.

It gives InpulseX a great validation that our platform is secure, and our processes/approach did help mitigate the further impact on the Community.

InpulseX will pursue all legal avenues necessary to be reimbursed for the amount of IPX and BNB tokens stolen from the ecosystem by the Starter wallet. Starter must be held accountable for the damage created under its poor management.

InpulseX will deliver a new and better format for distributing the IDO tokens, secure and entirely under the responsibility of the project. The team has been extremely diligent in processing the list of wallets from Starter and reconstructing the buy/claimed/unclaimed token detailed report from each IDO contract.

We have a few ideas of which approach to take and will provide more details to the Community before July’s distribution event. The community members will not be impacted by tokens or claims they did not execute within the Starter platform before the incident. Each wallet will have access in full to their allowances.

InpulseX was forced to postpone the announcement of absolutely great news scheduled for May due to this unfortunate and severe event that needed the team’s full attention. However, this gives us the opportunity of making our foundations even more robust and the future brighter.
