Let's try this technique with a root of G:

Tonic chords for modes are built on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th intervals of which ever mode you are using. Flatting your third interval makes the mode/chord minor. Flatting your fifth interval makes the mode/chord diminished.

1- G, B, D (major)

2- G, Bb, D (minor)

3- G, Bb, D (minor)

4- G, B, D (major)

5- G, B, D (major)

6- G, Bb, D (minor)

7- G, Bb, Db (diminished)

Within modes of the major scale we have three major chords, three minor chords, and one diminished chord.

Let's build a list of major modes.

First we need the A Chromatic scale, which is all half steps of all the notes available in sequential order, so that we can choose a root note to determine what our steps will be:

A, A#/Bb, B, C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E, F, F#/Gb, G, and G#/Ab

Let's choose the root of C for our next list of major modes because C major also happens to be every white key on the keyboard, making this an important list of modes to learn. The first major mode steps are always "WWHWWWH". Starting with The Ionian C major scale our mode list will be:

1- WWHWWWH - C, D, E, F, G, A, B (Ionian/Major)

2- WHWWWHW - C, D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb (Dorian/Minor)

3- HWWWHWW - C, Db, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb (Phrygian/Minor)

4- WWWHWWH - C, D, E, F#, G, A, B (Lydian/Major)

5- WWHWWHW - C, D, E, F, G, A, Bb (Mixolydian/Major)

6- WHWWHWW - C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb (Aeolian/Minor)
