The most valuable commodity is no longer gold or oil — it’s computing & data. This $4+ trillion industry is monopolized by four corporations — AWS, Google Cloud, Meta, and Microsoft.

2. They own 96% of the world’s data and IT infrastructure. They set the terms for what we can say, build, use, consume, and share.

3. They spend billions of dollars on building services to collect our data. If you’re not paying for it, you are the product.

4. The largest shareholders of these IT monopolies are BlackRock and Vanguard, the very same entities that spend millions lobbying for laws that favor them.

5. If governments or regulators want to shut down your website or service, they contact AWS or Google to do it. Large shareholders claim there aren’t conflicts of interest, but look around.

6. In ancient times, empires and kingdoms ruled the world. They held centralized power, monopolized resources, and made critical decisions behind closed doors — regardless of the outcomes.

7. We think we’re better off today, but I find that structure still exists, hidden beneath the surface.

8. In the old days, the Ottoman and Roman empires controlled certain parts of the world. But today’s monopolies like AWS, Google Cloud, Meta, and Microsoft control, have more influence and distribution than all those empires combined.

9. Now, the big question: If we survive long enough — another 100 — and become a type-1 civilization, slowly colonizing our solar system, will we have mega-corporations like Google controlling solar system-scale data and IT infrastructure?

10. What happens if one corporation controls everything? How will this affect our future? To me, it seems we are heading that way.

11. From a democratic point of view, a small group of people shouldn’t get to decide what is good for society. We should share that right. Big corporations assume they have that right and run with it. But we shouldn’t give them that right by default.

12. I envision a world where trust is built into the design — not into brands or people who run it. Instead of relying on a small group of people, we should have technologies that are immutable by design and verified by widely distributed independent verifiers.

13. When I look at decentralized public networks like Bitcoin, I find them fascinating. For the first time in history, we have a self-evolving, self-governing public infrastructure that is available to anyone — not owned or controlled by a government or corporation.

14. This is why I was drawn into the Web3 space in the first place. I was so excited and inspired by the hope that we can demonstrate democracy and freedom through technology and innovation.

15. That’s why decentralization is so important to our future. It distributes power, with trust in design.

Decentralization Is the Foundation of True Democracy!

Read my full article, where I break things down even further.
https://lnkd.in/gAHfUJD3

Ashton — Founder and Product Architect at Openmesh

We’re back in Australia after our web3 world tour. The Openmesh team has been busy championing decentralization and asking ourselves the tough questions: “Can we really say we’re all in on decentralization if we’re so dependent on centralized infrastructure?” In our hometown of Sydney, the Australian Crypto Convention brought together a massive crowd of over 7000 crypto enthusiasts, traders, founders and builders from Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, and across Asia.

The atmosphere was buzzing, fueled by Bitcoin’s surge this week hovering just below the $100,000 mark.

With an extensive lineup of speakers and over 1,000 exhibitors, the event had something for everyone — from newbs to degens.

Charles Hoskinson, CEO & Founder at Input Output (co-founder of Ethereum, founder of Cardano), shared several key insights into the future of blockchain technology and its societal impacts. Hoskinson called attention to the importance of decentralization in blockchain — data, identity and governance structures, emphasizing the need for cross-chain interoperability to drive growth in the industry.

On Day 2, Raoul Pal, CEO at Real Vision, presented his “Don’t F*ck this up” thesis.

Pal preached that as the world becomes increasingly digital, blockchain technology will be essential for various sectors, including finance, art, and contracts. Pal explained, “Everything in a digital world is going to require blockchain rails,” highlighting the technology’s role in ensuring trust and transparency without relying on centralized authorities. He advocated for decentralized systems and encouraged a long-term mindset, calling for investment in projects that focus on building and innovation.

The “To meme or not to meme” panel drew a full house. Timothy Stebbing, Director at Dogecoin Foundation, said “I only invest in things that have utility, and I don’t see utility in those memecoins.”

Whilst many still see the lack of utility in Doge, Stebbing refers to the strength of the Doge community, and their focus on “memes for good” using the token to support numerous charitable causes and drive positive change in the world. “Dogecoin has grown beyond its origins as a meme; we are now focused on creating real-world applications for our cryptocurrency,” Stebbing stated.

The panel delved into the concept of short-term memecoins as a “tokenization of entertainment,” debating their place in the broader crypto landscape. Ultimately, there was consensus: long-term value lies in investing in projects that are building utility and meaningful applications.

The Openmesh team had productive meetings with developers from Kaspa, Cardano and the team at Alibaba Cloud. Alibaba Cloud is actively servicing the web3 space with notable clients like Fetch.ai, NEAR Foundation, Avalanche and several centralized exchanges. One key takeaway from the conversations was, “Exchanges like Binance spend millions of dollars per month on Alibaba Cloud and AWS. Imagine if we switched it off? Billions would be lost”. This underscores the web3 industry’s heavy reliance on centralized intermediaries for critical infrastructure.

Amid all the excitement, it’s encouraging to see growing support for Openmesh’s vision and mission. And as we lean into 2025 — The Era of Decentralization, join us and explore how Openmesh is building long-term decentralized infrastructure for the World. He shed light on one of the most pressing issues of our time, the monopoly and centralization of digital superpowers, and laid out a bold vision for the future of decentralized infrastructure. The keynote, titled “The Era of Decentralization,” emphasized the urgent need to challenge the concentration of control in Web2 and Web3 ecosystems and introduced Openmesh’s revolutionary contributions toward achieving a decentralized future.

The Threat of Centralized Power

Kicking off the keynote, Ashton spoke about the biggest threats humanity faces — nuclear war, asteroid impacts, pandemics — and then added another major one: the centralization of digital power. He pointed out how just a handful of corporations control most of the world’s IT infrastructure, cloud services, and AI capabilities.

He compared this to ancient empires like the Romans and Ottomans, which centralized power and made decisions in secret, often without considering the broader consequences. But today, Ashton argued, the stakes are even higher. With massive digital monopolies controlling so much of the world’s infrastructure, we’re at risk of creating what he called “a Google at a solar system scale.” To prevent that, decentralization isn’t just an option — it’s a necessity to protect democracy and ensure power isn’t concentrated in the hands of a few.

A Vision for Decentralized Infrastructure

Ashton described his vision for a world where trust isn’t something we place in companies or individuals but is instead built into technology itself. Inspired by public networks like Bitcoin, which run independently of governments or corporations, Ashton said this is the foundation for creating systems that are self-evolving, self-governing, and open to everyone.

When he left Phantom in 2019, he started Openmesh with the idea of building a decentralized alternative to AWS. Drawing inspiration from networks like BitTorrent, he set out to create a system where people could own and control their own data and infrastructure without needing to rely on big centralized providers.

Openmesh: Building the Future

Ashton introduced Openmesh’s flagship technology, Xnode, a modular tool that simplifies how decentralized infrastructure is deployed and managed. He described it as “Lego blocks” for building infrastructure — easy to use and highly flexible. With Xnode, developers can quickly spin up Ethereum nodes, run DeFi apps, or deploy AI tools without needing to rely on centralized cloud services.

One of the standout announcements was Openmesh’s decentralized service mesh protocol, which Ashton explained tackles the huge problem of duplicated cloud operations. Instead of wasting resources by building the same compute and storage repeatedly, this protocol enables sharing and efficiency, drastically cutting costs while keeping everything decentralized.

Unlike many Web3 projects that go straight for peer-to-peer computing and struggle with adoption, Openmesh took a practical approach, starting with data centers and user-focused hardware to ensure performance and reliability right from the start.

A Bold Collaboration with Chainlink

One of the keynote’s highlights was the collaboration between Openmesh and Chainlink. Ashton shared his excitement about Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), calling it one of the most important innovations in Web3 since DeFi. CCIP allows different Web3 ecosystems to communicate securely, solving a critical issue for decentralized apps and services.

To accelerate decentralization, Ashton announced Openmesh’s $100 million giveaway to the Web3 industry, with Chainlink receiving the largest share. He explained that partnerships like this are key to pushing the industry toward a future where 90% or more of Web3 could truly be decentralized.

A Call to Action

Ashton wrapped up by declaring that 2024 would be “The Era of Decentralization.” He challenged the audience to rethink how they approach Web3, urging developers and builders to design systems that are open, decentralized, and free from the control of any single entity.

The keynote wasn’t just about theory — it was a call to take action and build a future where people truly own their data, their infrastructure, and their digital lives. With Openmesh leading the charge and partnerships like Chainlink paving the way, Ashton painted an inspiring picture of what’s possible when decentralization becomes more than just a buzzword — it becomes a movement.

Watch the keynote presentation:
https://medium.com/media/ca4bbaf9a5dde21fc40d5e91e4648067/href
Stay connected with us on Twitter and Telegram for more updates.

Website: https://www.openmesh.network/

Blog: https://blog.openmesh.network/

Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/OpenmeshNetwork

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/openmesh/

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/openmeshn

Discord: https://discord.com/invite/openmesh

Telegram: https://t.me/openmesh

GitHub: https://github.com/Openmesh-Network

Openmesh had the honor of attending SmartCon 2024 as a Platinum Sponsor, marking a big moment in our journey to reshape the landscape of decentralization. Our presence at the event was packed with key milestones, big announcements, and memorable experiences, all aimed at showcasing our commitment to decentralization.

Ashton’s Keynote, Main Stage - 2025: The Era of Decentralization

One of the most anticipated moments of SmartCon 2024 was Ashton Hettiarachi’s keynote, where he addressed a pressing issue: the alarming centralization of the world’s data and IT infrastructure.

90% of the world’s data and IT infrastructure is controlled by 5 private corporations, and we are supposed to trust them?

Ashton addressed the irony that much of the critical Web3 infrastructure, including decentralized applications, services, and nodes, still relies heavily on centralized cloud providers like AWS and GCP. This reliance undermines the very principle of decentralization that Web3 aims to uphold.

Ashton introduced Openmesh’s vision to build a decentralized, permissionless cloud and data network without a middleman. This groundbreaking infrastructure, powered by CCIP and the Decentralized Service Mesh Protocol (DSP), aims to revolutionize how decentralized applications, services, and protocols operate. By 2025, Openmesh envisions the emergence of advanced decentralized solutions across industries such as DeFi, GameFi, DeSci, DePIN, and cross-chain innovations. He painted a picture of a future where data is no longer controlled by a few corporations but is open, decentralized, and benefits everyone.

This isn’t just about technology but about shaping the internet for the next few decades, ensuring democracy, and safeguarding the free flow of information for future generations.

Catchup on the recording here: https://smartcon.chain.link/video-on-demand/-2025-the-era-of-decentralization

Booth Segments

Our booth at SmartCon was full of activity and innovation. We hosted raffles frequently where we spun the wheel for a lucky winner.

Hackathons: Giving an opportunity for the developers to showcase their skills and code their way to winning prizes worth up to $4k.

Through all these sessions and more, excitement was high and the engagement was amazing. From the Openmesh team, we want to thank everyone who had the chance to come and support us.

Ashton’s 2nd Keynote, Spotlight Stage — The $100 Million Decentralized Cloud Initiative

In addition to his main keynote, Ashton Hettiarachi took to the Spotlight Stage to discuss the $100 Million Decentralized Cloud Initiative, a pivotal moment for developers and founders looking to harness the power of decentralization.

This talk provided a deeper dive into how Openmesh is allocating substantial resources to build a more decentralized internet. Ashton outlined how developers and founders could access these resources, including Xnodes, for free. The initiative is designed to empower the Web3 community to build and scale decentralized applications and services without the limitations of traditional, centralized cloud providers.

The Decentralized Cloud Initiative aims to transform data and IT infrastructure by providing $100 million worth of public cloud services over the next 12 months. This initiative supports both Web3 and Web2 by offering Xnodes deployed on high-performance decentralized virtual machines (DVMs) linked to Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs), without KYC requirements. Through community funding and partnerships with bare metal providers, Openmesh will create and distribute these decentralized virtual machines, for free empowering developers, start-ups, and other organizations around the world and laying the foundation for a truly decentralized cloud.

He also highlighted how out of the 100 million, Openmesh is allocating $5 million worth of cloud ressources to Chainlink as part of the partnership with Openmesh.

HackerHouse Workshop: Hands-On with Openmesh

One of the most engaging moments of SmartCon was the HackerHouse Workshop, where Ashton and our engineers demonstrated the power of Openmesh firsthand.

Attendees got a deep dive into how to deploy an Xnode virtual machine on Xnode studio.

The workshop also showcased our seamless integration with CCIP, sparking real excitement among developers eager to build decentralized applications. The interactive session allowed participants to engage directly with our technology, gaining valuable insights into the future of decentralized infrastructure.

Openmesh side events

Official Openmesh VIP & Networking Event:

At SmartCon 2024, Openmesh hosted an exclusive VIP event that brought together leading minds from the Web3 and DePIN communities.
