            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>September is almost over and HacktoberFest is to begin soon!</p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/300/1*JCnMb3Me-Oi1kxQE53HtYA.jpeg" /><figcaption>HacktoberFest</figcaption></figure><p>But what is HacktoberFest?</p><p>HacktoberFest is an annual event that occurs in October. It is created by DigitalOcean. Thousands of developers participate in this event across the globe.</p><h3>Who Can Participate in Hacktoberfest?</h3><p>All developers of different levels and backgrounds can participate in Hacktoberfest. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, or a junior or a senior, you can participate in Hacktoberfest.</p><p>There are two ways to participate in Hacktoberfest: as a contributor or as a maintainer. A contributor is someone that helps open source projects resolve issues they have opened. Whereas a maintainer manages an open source project and presents issues that they need help with.</p><p>This year Hacktoberfest is coming with something different. Hacktoberfest 2022 encourages low-code and non-code contributions, which can be done through blog posts, translating content, graphic design, and <a href="https://hacktoberfest.com/about/#low-or-non-code">more</a>. The contributions must be tracked through GitHub Pull Requests (PRs) as other types of contributions.</p><p>It is not an Anonymous hacking anniversary, but a global event with the main goal of raising awareness about Open Source and encouraging as many developers as possible to participate regularly, not just in October. HacktoberFest also comes with a challenge and the first 40,000 participants to complete it, will be eligible to decide between two prizes: the official HacktoberFest 2022 t-shirt, or a tree planted in their name.</p><p>Participation is bound to Open Source contributions, and starting from this year not only from code but also in all the other ways we know are counting as contributions. Such as Low-Code or No-Code open-source projects, documentation, translation of documentation, and possibly everything that you can think of.</p><p>The entire event works thanks to maintainers of projects facilitating all the process and guess what, everyone is a winner! Less-known projects have the chance of taking the spotlight and finding new contributors, as well as new developers approaching Open-Source, who have a large number of repositories ready to welcome and guide them throughout their first steps in Open Source! Rewards are not only for contributors but also for maintainers who make this event successful!</p><h3>Participating as a Contributor</h3><p>As a contributor, during October you must have four PRs that either:</p><ul><li>Are merged into a participating repository;</li><li>Or have the hacktoberfest-accepted label;</li><li>Or have an approving review, but not closed or draft.</li></ul><p>A participating repository is a repository that has the hacktoberfest topic. Participation can be done through GitHub or GitLab.</p><h3>Participating as a Maintainer</h3><p>To participate as a maintainer, you must facilitate participation for contributors. The first step is to either:</p><ol><li><a href="https://docs.github.com/en/enterprise-server@3.3/repositories/managing-your-repositorys-settings-and-features/customizing-your-repository/classifying-your-repository-with-topics#adding-topics-to-your-repository">Add the </a><a href="https://docs.github.com/en/enterprise-server@3.3/repositories/managing-your-repositorys-settings-and-features/customizing-your-repository/classifying-your-repository-with-topics#adding-topics-to-your-repository">hacktoberfest topic to your repository</a>;</li><li>Or add the hacktoberfest-accepted label into your repository to be used on pull requests.</li></ol><p>Then, you must merge four PRs into your repository during October. If you decide to use the second option mentioned in the first step, make sure to add the hacktoberfest-accepted label to these PRs.</p><p><strong>Registration</strong> to Hacktoberfest opens on September 26th.
