Typically, you choose a virtual machine when you need more control over the computing environment than the other choices offer. This article explains what you should consider before you create a virtual machine, how you build it, and how you manage it.

Why Use Azure Virtual Machines?

1. Scalability: Easily scale up or down based on your needs.

2. Flexibility: Choose from a wide range of OS and configurations.

3. Cost-Effective: Pay only for what you use with various pricing options.

Considerations Before Creating a Virtual Machine

Before creating a virtual machine, consider the following aspects:

1. Resource Names: Define a naming convention for your resources to easily identify and manage them.

2. Location: Choose the Azure region where your resources will be stored.

3. VM Size: Select the appropriate size based on the workload, affecting processing power, memory, storage capacity, and network bandwidth.

4. OS and Configuration: Decide on the operating system and the initial configuration.

5. Related Resources: Identify any additional resources your VM might need, such as virtual networks, storage accounts, and network security groups.

Creating an Azure Virtual Machine: Step-by-Step Guide

Prerequisites

Before you start, ensure you have:

- An active Azure account.

If you don’t have one, you can create a free account at https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/free/.

- Basic knowledge of Azure portal navigation.

Step 1: Sign in to the Azure Portal

1. Go to the Azure Portal.

2. Sign in with your Azure account credentials.

Step 2: Create a New Virtual Machine

1. Create a Resource Group

In the Azure portal, navigate to the “Resource groups” section.

Click “Create” and enter a name for your resource group (e.g. PrVmRg).

Select your subscription and a region close to your user base, then click “Review + create”.

2. After going into the Azure portal, click on “Create a resource” on the homepage.

3. In resources, select Virtual machine.

Step 3: Configure Basic Settings

1. Subscription: Select the Azure subscription you want to use.

An Azure subscription is an agreement with Microsoft to use one or more Microsoft cloud platforms or services.

2. Resource Group: Choose an existing resource group or create a new one.

A resource group is a container that holds related resources for an Azure solution. It includes all the resources for the solution and allows for easier management and organization.

3. Virtual Machine Name: Enter a name for your VM.

The name should be unique and easily identifiable within your resource group.

4. Region: Select the region where you want your VM to be located.

The region is an Azure data center location where your VM will be hosted.

5. Availability Options: Choose the desired availability option based on your redundancy needs.

Availability options include availability zones and sets that help protect your applications and data from data center failures.

Step 4: Choose an Image and Size

1. Image: Select the operating system for your VM (e.g., Windows Server 2019, Ubuntu 20.04).

The image is a template used to create a VM, including an operating system and other software.

2. Size: Choose the VM size based on your performance requirements and budget.

Azure provides a variety of sizes with different CPU, memory, and storage configurations. The size determines the computing power, memory, and storage available to the VM.

Step 5: Configure Administrator Account

1. Authentication Type: Choose either password or SSH public key.

The authentication type determines how you will log into the VM.

2. Username: Enter the admin username.

The username is the account you will use to manage and configure the VM.

3. Password/SSH Public Key: Enter the password or SSH public key, depending on your chosen authentication type.

This is the credential used to authenticate and gain access to the VM.

4. Inbound ports: Configure inbound port rules to allow remote access via SSH or RDP.

Step 6: Configure Disk Options

1. OS Disk Type: Select the type of disk (Standard HDD, Standard SSD, or Premium SSD) for your OS disk.

The OS disk is the disk where the operating system is installed.

2. Data Disks: (Optional) Add more data disks if needed.

Data disks are used to store application data, databases, and other data that you want to keep separate from the OS disk.

Note: Choose Standard SSD for practice purposes

Step 7: Configure Networking

1. Virtual Network: Select an existing virtual network or create a new one.

A virtual network (VNet) is a representation of your own network in the cloud. It is logically isolated from other networks in Azure.

2. Subnet: Choose the subnet for your VM.

A subnet is a range of IP addresses in the VNet where your VM will be placed.

3. Public IP: Select “Yes” to assign a public IP address.

A public IP address allows your VM to communicate with the internet.

4. NIC Network Security Group: Choose the default security group or configure custom security rules.

A network security group (NSG) contains security rules that allow or deny inbound and outbound network traffic to your VM.

Step 8: Management and Monitoring

1. Boot Diagnostics: Enable or disable boot diagnostics.

Boot diagnostics captures and stores serial console output and screenshots of the virtual machine running on a host.

2. Identity: Configure Microsoft Entra ID (optional).

Microsoft Entra ID, formerly known as Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), is a cloud-based identity and access management service.

3. Backup: Set up VM backup if needed.

Azure Backup provides a simple and cost-effective way to back up your data and recover it from the Microsoft Azure cloud.

Step 9: Review and Create

1. Review all the settings and configurations.

2. Click on “Create” to start the deployment of your VM.

3. Wait until deployment is not completed.

Once the Deployment is Completed, you’ll see the option ‘Go-to-resources’, click on it and copy your IP address to connect your VM.

Using Your Azure Virtual Machine

Connecting to Your VM

1. Windows VM: Use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to connect.

RDP is a protocol that provides a graphical interface to connect to another computer over a network connection.

Open the RDP client, enter the public IP address of your VM.

Log in with the admin credentials i.e. enter the username and password, and access your virtual machine

2. Linux VM: Use SSH to connect. Open a terminal and run:

SSH (Secure Shell) is a protocol used to securely connect to a remote server/system over a network.

Managing Your VM

1. Azure Portal: Use the portal to start, stop, restart, and monitor your VM.

2. Azure CLI: Use the Azure Command-Line Interface for various management tasks.

Azure CLI is a set of commands used to create and manage Azure resources.

Securing Your VM

1. Network Security Groups: Configure NSGs to control inbound and outbound traffic.

3. Patching: Regularly update your VM to ensure it has the latest security patches.

Scaling Your VM

But what is HacktoberFest?

HacktoberFest is an annual event that occurs in October. It is created by DigitalOcean. Thousands of developers participate in this event across the globe.

Who Can Participate in Hacktoberfest?

All developers of different levels and backgrounds can participate in Hacktoberfest. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, or a junior or a senior, you can participate in Hacktoberfest.

There are two ways to participate in Hacktoberfest: as a contributor or as a maintainer. A contributor is someone that helps open source projects resolve issues they have opened. Whereas a maintainer manages an open source project and presents issues that they need help with.

This year Hacktoberfest is coming with something different. Hacktoberfest 2022 encourages low-code and non-code contributions, which can be done through blog posts, translating content, graphic design, and more. The contributions must be tracked through GitHub Pull Requests (PRs) as other types of contributions.

It is not an Anonymous hacking anniversary, but a global event with the main goal of raising awareness about Open Source and encouraging as many developers as possible to participate regularly, not just in October. HacktoberFest also comes with a challenge and the first 40,000 participants to complete it, will be eligible to decide between two prizes: the official HacktoberFest 2022 t-shirt, or a tree planted in their name.

Participation is bound to Open Source contributions, and starting from this year not only from code but also in all the other ways we know are counting as contributions. Such as Low-Code or No-Code open-source projects, documentation, translation of documentation, and possibly everything that you can think of.

The entire event works thanks to maintainers of projects facilitating all the process and guess what, everyone is a winner! Less-known projects have the chance of taking the spotlight and finding new contributors, as well as new developers approaching Open-Source, who have a large number of repositories ready to welcome and guide them throughout their first steps in Open Source! Rewards are not only for contributors but also for maintainers who make this event successful!

Participating as a Contributor

As a contributor, during October you must have four PRs that either:

• Are merged into a participating repository;
• Or have the hacktoberfest-accepted label;
• Or have an approving review, but not closed or draft.

A participating repository is a repository that has the hacktoberfest topic. Participation can be done through GitHub or GitLab.

Participating as a Maintainer

To participate as a maintainer, you must facilitate participation for contributors. The first step is to either:

1. Add the hacktoberfest topic to your repository;
2. Or add the hacktoberfest-accepted label into your repository to be used on pull requests.

Then, you must merge four PRs into your repository during October. If you decide to use the second option mentioned in the first step, make sure to add the hacktoberfest-accepted label to these PRs.

Registration to Hacktoberfest opens on September 26th. When you register, you’ll be able to choose whether you’re participating as a contributor or as a maintainer.
