Many investors will gradually move their capital to stablecoins as more capital flows into cryptocurrencies to hedge themselves against a potential downturn in the market.</p><p>While we cannot see any large price changes in the stablecoins, we can gauge interest by measuring market capitalization. According to defillama in September of 2023 the total market capitalization was ~125 billion US dollars and as of September 2024 it is ~170 billion US dollars, increasing over 5 billion dollars in the last month alone. It is evident that there is increasing interest in stablecoins as a store of value.</p><p><strong>Loans and Borrowing</strong></p><p>In DeFi, users can use stablecoins as collateral to borrow other cryptocurrencies through collateralized loans. The consistent value of stablecoins reduces the risk of liquidation which is very useful in market downturns. Users can also borrow stablecoins by providing more volatile assets as collateral allowing them to keep their volatile assets while accessing additional liquidity. The risks associated can vary greatly, however it does open the door for more money making opportunities that were available in traditional finance.</p><p><strong>Yield farming</strong></p><p>Using stablecoins, users can participate in yield farming protocols. For example, by depositing stablecoins into liquidity pools on decentralized exchanges and lending platforms, they contribute to the platform’s operations. In return, users will earn transaction fees or interest generated by the protocol.
