ERC20Permit is a feature extension of the ERC20 token proposed in EIP-2612 to improve user experience.

1. The authorization step only requires the user to sign off-chain, eliminating the need to send a transaction on-chain, thus reducing one transaction.
2. After signing off-chain, users can delegate third parties to perform subsequent transactions. Even if the user does not have ETH, they can still transfer tokens.
3. These features optimize the original two transactions into one signature and one transaction, saving users gas fees. While ERC20 permit enhances the user experience for token authorization, many users are not well-versed in the understanding and use of ERC20 permit signatures.

In today’s rapidly developing blockchain technology landscape, the security of smart contracts and accounts is becoming increasingly important. The signature replay issue, as a potential security risk, can threaten users’ assets. This article will provide a detailed introduction to this issue and share Triathon’s security recommendations to protect users’ assets.

In the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) ecosystem, there are two main types of accounts: Externally Owned Accounts (EOA) and Contract Accounts.

• Externally Owned Accounts (EOA): Controlled by private keys. For example, when creating a new account using Ethereum wallet software like MetaMask, you are actually creating an EOA. The EOA address is generated from a public key, which is derived from a private key.
• Contract Accounts: Controlled by code logic without private keys, and their behavior is entirely defined by the internal code (smart contract).

EOAs can use their associated private keys to sign messages, whereas contract accounts, lacking private keys, cannot sign messages. Therefore, the ERC1271 proposal introduces a standard method to verify the validity of signatures for contracts. This can be achieved by implementing the isValidSignature(hash, signature) function in the contract. This function can be called to verify signatures.

ERC1271 Signature Verification

The isValidSignature method is highly flexible and can use any method to verify the given signature. This verification may be context-dependent, such as time-based or state-based, related to the EOA, such as signatory authorization levels within smart wallets, or linked to signature schemes like ECDSA, multi-signature, or BLS.

With the widespread application of ERC4337 account abstraction and the introduction of related ecosystem projects compatible with ERC1271, an increasing number of smart contract accounts are appearing on the blockchain. Many smart contract accounts also comply with the ERC1271 standard, enabling them to verify signatures.

For example, Uniswap’s Permit2 contract is designed to improve user convenience when using ERC20 tokens. Users only need to authorize Permit2 once in the token contract, and then they can use signatures to approve the Permit2 contract to use their ERC20 tokens. Moreover, the Permit2 contract supports ERC1271 when verifying signatures.

Signature Replay Risk Cases

If there are issues with the signature verification logic of a smart contract account, it can pose risks to the security of users’ wallets and assets.

For instance, if the simplest signature verification method is adopted, which only verifies the signatory without checking the actual content of the signature, signature replay issues may arise.

Suppose a user (victim) has multiple smart contract accounts on the blockchain, and the victim’s EOA is a frequently used hot wallet that has authorized the Permit2 contract. In that case, the signature may be reused.

Assume the user (victim) has two smart contract accounts on the blockchain, AAWallet_1 and AAWallet_2, both complying with the ERC4337 standard.

If both accounts hold WETH assets and have authorized the Permit2 contract to manage the assets in the smart contract accounts, and the victim’s EOA has also authorized the Permit2 contract to manage WETH assets, a signature replay issue can occur.

If the user (victim) uses their EOA to authorize the attacker’s account to use their WETH assets, the WETH assets in the user’s AAWallet may also be used by the attacker’s account, causing the same signature to be reused multiple times.

Users should take the following precautions when using blockchain and smart contracts:

• Regularly Check Authorizations: Regularly review and manage wallet authorizations to avoid unnecessary permission abuse.
• Use Secure Wallets: Choose reputable wallets and tools to ensure software security.
• Multi-signature and Tiered Authorization: For important assets, use multi-signature or tiered authorization mechanisms to enhance security.
• Cautious Signing: Carefully verify transaction content before authorizing or signing any transactions to avoid mistakes.
