These General Elections which were originally scheduled in November 2023 were delayed due to ECP demanding some extra time and funds to conduct elections. Nearly all political parties are allowed to do their political campaigns in their respective constituencies except one, which is Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is Pakistan’s leading political party that rules over billions of Pakistanis hearts, is barred to contest in general elections 2024 in numerous ways. Speculators and many renowned analysts believe that “It’s the armed forces that don’t want Imran Khan back in power due to many reasons one of them chiefly is, he lacks “A YES BOSS”

A renowned analyst Benazir Shah said that

One thing is clear, Khan himself will not be allowed to come back to power by the military — at least in the upcoming polls (Source: Al Jazeera).

Background

This all started with a no confidence motion against Imran Khan followed by a series of events. From April 10 2022 till now, PTI is being barred to contest in upcoming general elections through various ways. Here is a timeline of events that happened from 10 april to 9 may 2023.

Timeline: Imran Khan, from ouster to arrest

Let’s have a look on how Pakistan’s leading political party PTI is being stopped, to contest in general elections 2024.

Numerous Sham Cases

Picture taken from The Christian Science Monitor article

After a no-confidence motion followed by the so-called cipher issue. Numerous sham cases were lodged against Imran Khan by the state institutions including allegations ranging from corruption to terrorism to riots to inciting public on 9 may incident. All these sham cases were made in order to put Imran khan out of the general elections 2024, which khan believed ‘is the only way forward’ to bring peace and economic stability in Pakistan.

Since his removal from power in a no-confidence vote in the parliament in April 2022, Khan has been slapped with more than 150 legal cases, including several on charges of corruption, terrorism and inciting people to violence over deadly protests in May”

“He has appeared in court for numerous cases in both Lahore and Islamabad, and long warned that he would be arrested to prevent him from participating in elections that are due to be held before the end of the year

Pakistan court rules against ex-PM Imran Khan's plea to shift case

While the Army cites national security concerns to justify these tactics, the systematic dismantling of Imran Khan and his party points towards a broader scheme to crackdown on any threat to the establishment and the ruling alliance

Why Pakistan army is targeting Imran Khan's party

Illegal Arrest

On 9th May 2023 Imran khan was illegally arrested by the military rangers while he was in IHC Islamabad High Court for a case hearing. Subsequently there was a huge internet outrage that continued for 3 days, resulting in billions of loss of Pakistan’s IT Sector.
https://medium.com/media/70d6de82a2ade8fcd8eef5401bbb76f8/href
Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that the arrest of Khan at the Islamabad High Court by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) using paramilitary troops was in violation of the law, and that such actions would have a “chilling effect”.

Bandial stated: “Your arrest was invalid, and therefore, the entire process needs to be reversed.” He noted: “What dignity remains of the court if 90 people entered its premises? Protestors around the country gathered to demonstrate their protest against the illegal arrest. However, “a certain lot” who wanted violence in Pakistan incited hate among public and encouraged them to destroy state properties.

The Aftermath

Brutal Crackdown, Military trials and Forced conversions started against many PTI leaders, Workers, Social workers, Supporters as well as the Protestors, in the guise of 9 May incident. This crackdown was done to overshadow PTI political struggle for a free and fair election.

Efforts to put Khan behind bars have been stepped up in advance of elections expected later this year. His popularity and large support base, combined with his ability to mobilise massive crowds, pose a threat to the governing coalition and could potentially polarise the electorate. (Source: Al Jazeera)

Pakistan's ex-PM Imran Khan arrested: What you need to know

Excessive abuse, violence, brutal torture was done by the state institutions on public in the guise of 9 may incident. Social media platforms were full of such videos where police raided house at midnight, by climbing over the wall, entering people’s bedroom without any search warrant. Destroying everything in their house. Women and kids weren’t left alone in this. In fact it wouldn’t be wrong to say here that they became their target first. Many PTI Leaders were threaten with the rape consequences to their women, if they wouldn’t leave the party. Some PTI leaders went underground, some left politics due to huge pressure, while others join their rival political parties. However, those who remained true to the party’s cause stood on their ground. Many Journalist who supported Imran Khan’s stance of free and fair elections were harassed too. Some moved out of their country for safety reasons, while some were brutally tortured (Imran Riaz Khan), some were kidnapped for speaking up. One of the prominent journalist, Arshad Sharif was brutally murdered for spilling the beans about the armed forces of Pakistan.

Hammad Azhar, who has served as Pakistan’s finance and energy minister, says police and plain-clothed officials have burst into his home six times in recent weeks, smashed his belongings and threatened his 82-year-old father, warning that his daughter would be abducted. Moreover he said police and “unknown people” took his father to a police station and released him after they went through his phone for an hour (Source: Reuters)

Hammad Azhar, who is in hiding, says he is under pressure from a “fascist regime” to leave the political party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Source: Reuters).

All this is being done because I continue to stand with my party and Imran Khan,” he told Reuters by telephone.

Like other senior members of the PTI who have been arrested in recent weeks, in some cases several times, Hammad Azhar avoided directly naming the powerful army as being responsible (Source: Reuters).

The entire senior leadership is in jail,” Khan said in the interview. “And the only ones who can now get out of jail are the ones who then say that we renounce being part of PTI (Source: Reuters)

<a Final Arrest

Ex-leader had long warned he would be arrested to prevent him from running in upcoming elections (Source: Al Jazeera)

Pakistani police stand outside the house of former prime minister Imran Khan after his arrest in Lahore on Saturday. [Arif Ali/AFP]

Imran Khan was finally arrested on Aug 5 2023 at his home, in Lahore(a city of Pakistan), way before the court announced it. People outside his house showed resistance, in order to protect him, but they were badly beaten by the Punjab police. The Police barraged Khan’s house with full force attacking his house helps and breaking into his room violently.

Khan, 70, has faced a slew of court cases for charges he has said are politically motivated since being removed from power in a vote of no confidence last year, and he was not present when he was sentenced on Saturday (Source: Al Jazeera)

Legal experts say the guilty verdict reached by an Islamabad district court could eliminate Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s greatest rival in a national election expected in November (Source: Reuters)

Media Censorship

Before this ‘media censorship’ whenever Khan delivered his speech in numerous cities of Pakistan. News broadcasters often put a “censor beep sound” in his live speech’s or even cut a specific part of his speech. Upon discovering it was found that Khan named some ISI Officials (who were threatening him) and former army chief who had a direct hand in toppling over his government. However, this temporary censorship didn’t continue further as media houses were directed from the state institutions to stop covering him.

Journalist Amir Mehmood (a member of the top management at a private news channel) received a call from a powerful military official to stop the coverage of Imran khan rally(specifically mentioning the PTI Flags as well as his party candidates). Moreover it was instructed to show PTI Candidates as an independent candidate’s without mentioning the name of their party. (Source Al Jazeera)

The media houses that covered Imran Khan’s speeches were threaten with dire consequences. Pemra (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) however, later on imposed a blanket ban on coverage of Imran khan.

Picture taken from times now website. It shows a leading channel, blurring the face of Imran khan during IMF bailout package

In an effort to mould the narrative, and prevent “undesirable” opinions from making it to the airwaves, Pemra (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority)has warned TV channels not to give a platform to “zealots” and “hatemongers”. (Source: DAWN)

This media censorship was done in order to stop Imran khan political campaigns ahead general elections 2024.

Several journalists say they have been asked to impose near-blanket ban on the political party’s coverage ahead of February 8 elections. (Source: Al Jazeera)

Taking away the bat symbol

To eliminate PTI from contesting in general elections 2024, another dirty game was played. PTI was directed to hold intra-party elections no later than 13 June 2022 and were told that ‘no further extension will be granted. PTI conducted an intra-party elections on June 8 2022, and unanimously declared barrister Gohar Ali Khan as their party’s chairperson. However, ECP was not satisfied with PTI intra-party election and termed it as un-fair election

PTI had ‘failed to hold transparent, just and fair intra party elections. (Statement by the Election Commission of Pakistan)

ECP forced PTI to hold intra party elections again in 20 days or it will lose its emblem symbol ‘the cricket bat.

PTI Iconic Symbol Bat

The change was forced on the party after the Election Commission of Pakistan warned the PTI last month that it risked losing its emblem — a cricket bat — unless an internal ballot was held for party officers. (Source: Al Jazeera)

Arif Rafiq — President of Vizier Consulting — said the decision to block PTI symbol is “politically motivated”. They are part of a pattern of the Pakistani state using administrative measures, along with coercion, to deny PTI a pathway toward electoral victory,” he said, referring to the high popularity of Khan.(Source: Al Jazeera)

Removing khan from party chairmanship

Ever since Imran Khan was ousted, there was pressure on the party leaders to remove Imran Khan from the chairmanship. This pressure was created by the state institutions who want Khan out of the party he founded back in 1996. However, due to the nature of his sham cases it was evident that he will not be allowed to contest elections.

To contest general elections it was important for the party to gain its iconic symbol back. PTI decided to withdraw Imran Khan from the chairmanship (who had been sentenced for 3 years in a sham case and was also barred to hold any public office) in order to become acceptable by the ECP, to contest in general elections 2024.

The change was forced on the party after the Election Commission of Pakistan warned the PTI last month that it risked losing its emblem — a cricket bat — unless an internal ballot was held for party officers. I just wanted to condemn the Israeli military forces barbarism (targeting a hospital in Gaza) in strongest words possible. There should be no place for such people on earth who targets hospitals.

Palestinian officials say at least 500 people were killed in an Israeli air raid on Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. Moreover, The health ministry in Gaza said the blast at the hospital was caused by an Israeli air raid. The Palestinian Authority’s health minister, Mai Alkaila, accused Israel of carrying out “a massacre”

In the previous part, we waded through how the Balfour Declaration was implemented during the Great Britain era following World War II and we examined how the severe repercussions were in the form of the Arab Revolt. Now, in this part, we will go into the details of when, why, and how the UN adopted a partition plan and the subsequent events that unfolded thereafter.

Note: the further you will go through these parts the more you will know that Palestine and Israel Conflict was never A LAND CONFLICT rather than a Holy War which targeted mostly innocent Arab-Muslims of Palestine.

The UN Partition Plan

The United Nations proposed a partition plan for Palestine after the end of British Mandate on May 14, 1948. The UN General Assembly adopted this plan on November 29, 1947 as a Resolution 181 (II). Under this resolution, Mandatory Palestine was divided in to three parts. One for Palestinian Arabs, another for Jews and the third most integral and historical religious part — Jerusalem — under international control.

Under the resolution 181 (II), the Arabs were given central and parts of western Galilee, including Acre, the hilly regions of Samaria and Judea, an enclave in Jaffa, and the southern coastline, extending from north of Isdud (now Ashdod) and encompassing the present-day Gaza Strip, along with a portion of the desert bordering Egypt. While the Jews were given the most fertile parts of Palestine that included Eastern Galilee, the Coastal Plain extending from Haifa to Rehovot, and most of the Negev desert, including the southern outpost of Umm Rashrash (now Eilat).

Image obtained from: UN_Palestine_Partition_Versions_1947 Wikipedia

The Palestinian Arabs were not happy with the UN Partition Plan as it opposed their rights to have more land as per their population and the parts (given) which were distributed unfairly. Moreover the distribution of land in reality, turned out to be “a pro Jews” as 62% of the Palestinian land was given to Jewish community despite being less in population than Palestinian Arabs (two-thirds majority) which were twice as Jews. On the contrary Jews were happy as they were given the most fertile lands and majority part of the Palestine. While Zionists living in Palestine considered the partition plan as a beginning to their illegal territorial expansion at a propitious time.

The Arab Higher Committee, the Arab League and other Arab leaders and governments rejected it on the basis of unfair land distribution. They also rejected any form of territorial division, arguing that it violated the principles of national self-determination in the UN Charter which granted people the right to decide their own destiny. By citing the above concerns they declared their intention to stop the execution of the resolution by taking necessary measures. Citing the above concerns the Arabs announced their intention to stop the execution of the plan by taking necessary measures. This doesn’t go in favor of Jews and a civil war broke out in Palestine.

The Civil War 1947–1948

During the civil war, the Britain was given the responsibility of maintaining the peace in Palestine, however it chose to withdraw itself from the conflict and intervened occasionally. The situation took a significant turn on May 14, 1948, when the British Mandate of Palestine came to an end and the Jews declared the State of Israel. Following the declaration, the civil war escalated into a full scale riot resulting in serious clashes between Israel and the Arab states as a result of which Israel gained control of nearly 60% of the designated area for the Arab state, encompassing regions Jaffa, Lydda and Ramle area, Upper Galilee, some parts of the Negev, Tel Aviv-Jerusalem road and West Jerusalem, which was under international zone. This conflict ignited serious demographic change all over the middle-east and gave rise to biggest humanity crisis in the history known as Nakba.

Sources

https://www.palquest.org/en/highlight/159/un-partition-plan-1947

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Partition_Plan_for_Palestine

https://www.un.org/unispal/data-collection/general-assembly/#:~:text=By%20resolution%20181%20(II)%2C,under%20a%20special%20international%20regime.

1947-1948 civil war in Mandatory Palestine - Wikipedia

Part III in process…

Some of us even make a trend of these phrases on social networking sites, or make slogans so to protest against Israel’s inhumane treatment against Palestine, but rarely do we know what has happened in the past that has brought such a fate to Palestine.

So to understand what has brought Palestine such a fate. I’ll be digging down deep in the history to present you the facts on how and why Palestine humanity crises arose. And why, still no practical implementation has been made in this regard.

This article will have various parts so hook on till the end!

Disclaimer: While you question the credibility of this article, let me assure you that this article is backed by highly reputable news sources as well as authentic website articles’ information. Sources will be mentioned by the end of this article.

The End of World War II And The Balfour Declaration

Image from Wikipedia : The original letter from Balfour to Rothschild; the declaration reads

After the World War II, Palestine came under the governance of The Great Britain. The Britain then decided to act upon ‘Balfour Declaration’ which was made during World War I (1914–1918). This Balfour Declaration was a public pledge by Britain in 1917 declaring its aim to establish “a national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine. Prior to this Palestine was a multi-cultural state where Muslims were in majority and Christians and Jews were in minority. The statement came in the form of a letter from Britain’s then-foreign secretary, Arthur Balfour, addressed to Lionel Walter Rothschild, a figurehead of the British Jewish community. This Balfour Declaration was included in the terms of the British Mandate for Palestine after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. Though the Balfour declaration claimed that it will not suppress the rights (civil and religious) of non-Jewish communities, however it was implemented in a way that it gave more power to the Jews rather than the non-Jewish community (Palestine-Arab Muslims).

In the guise of balfour declaration the British government aided nearly 376,415 Jews in migration from Europe to Palestine, in order to populate Palestine with Jewish people. Which was successful as Jews population grew from 9% to nearly 27%.

The Palestinian-Arab Revolt (1936 to 1939)

Image from Wikipedia: British soldiers on an armoured train car with two Palestinian Arab hostages used as human shields.

Palestinians were alarmed with the rising change in their land demographics and the British confiscation of their land for the allocation to Jewish settlers. These mounting tensions ultimately resulted in the Arab Revolt in Palestine, spanning from 1936 to 1939. In April 1936, the newly established Arab National Committee urged Palestinians to initiate a comprehensive strike, abstain from tax payments, and refrain from purchasing Jewish goods, as a means of expressing their opposition to British colonialism and the increasing number of Jewish migration. This doesn’t suit the evil vendetta of the British government, so just after 6 months of strike they started brutal crackdown (mass arrest campaigns) and punitive home demolitions against the Palestinian protestors. The second stage of revolt started in late 1937 which was led by the Palestinian peasant resistance movement aiming to confront British forces and colonial rule. The British government didn’t lag behind and used all ways of forceful tactics to limit Palestinian struggles in getting their due rights and their fair share of land. They bombed villages, imposed curfews, demolished their homes, did administrative detentions and widespread summary executions. In addition they collaborated with Jewish settlers and formed armed groups to tackle Palestinian civilians who were demanding their due rights and fair share of land. During this process armaments were secretly imported within Yishuv weapons factory to strengthen Haganah — a Zionist military organization — which is now an integral part of Israel military force. Over the course of that triennium almost 5,000 Palestinians were killed, 15,000 to 20,000 were wounded and 5,600 were imprisoned.

Sources

You can read more about Balfour Declaration and Palestinian-Arab Revolt by visiting these websites.

Balfour Declaration - Wikipedia

What's the Israel-Palestine conflict about? It was a daily hustle for them to reach their places, until this time their fate didn’t help and they got stranded in a dangling cable car. The ride was going smoothly until two wires of cable car got snapped, risking the lives of individuals, dangling in the middle of a deep ravine surrounded by lofty mountains and rocky surface at a height of almost 900 feet. Soon an announcement was made in the local mosques about the situation. People gathered on both sides of ravine. Some locals moved forward to help but the management asked them to wait for military to intervene and help.

A local cleric, Mufti Hassan Zaib said, “I reached there around midday and a lot of other locals were waiting for rescue efforts to start. Some offered their services, but the administration asked them to wait for the army helicopters to arrive,” (Source: Al Jazeera).

Image obtained from Radio Pakistan Website

Battagram rescue operation

Military helicopters later arrived, however despite making numerous efforts they couldn’t save more than one live. This 12 hour long aerial operation was then called off by the military after daylight faded. However, it was resumed at night by the locals. Two brothers namely Sahib Khan and Nasir Khan along with their colleagues were called by the local administration for help. Previously they asked management to give them a chance, however management refused by citing that army helicopter will come and rescue.

According to them they were there at the spot for about 4–5 hours but by the evening army was able to save only one child using helicopter.(Source: Al-Jazeera)

Battagram local heros

The two brothers who belong to a nearby local town proved to be a saviour for the stranded individuals. They had been in the local business of cable car since long. It was not an easy task for them as the darkness, bad weather conditions and any minute mistake will not only cost their lives but the lives of those seven individuals too. As there were making the temporary dolly their videos and pictures went viral on social networking sites. Sahib — a local rescuer — who came first to rescue children at night said that as he advanced towards the dangling cable car, he could see the children being worn-out.

Image obtained by DAWN News Website

Sahib secured himself on his smaller cable car and pulled closer before reaching out to tie one of the children sitting in the hanging gondola(Source: Al-Jazeera).

The nervousness and fear among the crowd and sahib was anticipated as sahib feared that the load on the zip line might create an issue. However, things went well by the grace of God and they were able to save the lives of all stranded individuals.

After the completion of rescue operation, locals pleaded the government to make efforts in this regard by providing them secure means of transportation routes. As cable cars were their only means of transportation to travel shortly from one place to another.

Compiled and Written by AZWrites

Pakistan is quickly moving towards a chaotic environment, with justice merely seen, people in power enjoying while layman suffering.

Pakistan is a country that solely runs on might is right. People in higher positions (be it government, ministers, army generals or judiciary) have always misused their power either for their personal gains or to scare the slums just to satisfy their own ego and pride. Same has happened in Balochistan, a province of Pakistan.

Where a minister accused of keeping a woman along with her children in his private jail for years due to not testifying in a case conflict between him and his son, before brutally murdering them with bullets and tarnishing the face of woman with acid.

Before this heinous murder the slain woman made a video, testifying by holding Holy Book in her hand and saying the minister has captive her in jail and has sexually assaulted her daughter while imprisoned her sons. She further more plea in the video to get her family freed from the minister’s private jail.

Reportedly after that video went viral bullet-riddled bodies were found in a well near minster’s residency. The incident itself proves how the justice system is derailed in Pakistan. while the elite enjoys the power poor begs for mercy.

According to the police a raid was done but no one was found there. A superintendent tried obtaining information about the abductees but to no avail. the police further said that a strict action will be taken against the culprits once the victims’ heirs file a case and the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

While the minister refused the allegation but his son posted a video against him, where the children of slain woman can be clearly seen. With undeniable evidence (via video) presented against his father, he demanded an immediate recovery of the children by higher authorities.

Currently a sit-in protest with dead bodies is staged in Quetta outside the red zone with thousands of people chanting slogans against the minister.

We are living in times where the lives of people have became cheap and money, power and politics is all what elite crave for. The People in power have no fear whatsoever they have became so cruel and arrogant that they dont even think what they’re doing and what will be consequences after doing so. They think that they will getaway of all the mess they created, however one day they will be hold accountable for all their illegal acts may be then they realize, but it will be too late then.

Written by — Aaminah.Z

In this era where we just started, to talk about women’s right in Pakistan its more crucial to acknowledge their health issues as well. Pakistan is a country where surviving on a sole breadwinner has nearly become impossible. To cope up with this issue women of our society have step-in in the corporate world, but due to their painful monthly cycles they are often bound to their homes resulting in huge salary losses and making it difficult to make ends meet. keeping in mind the large number of absenteeism of women from their jobs some organizations in Pakistan have recently started to implement “Paid Period Leaves’’ a work place policy (a policy that allows female employees to take off from their workplace usually under a given time frame, its a separate category of leave and does not come under sick day leave or any other leave and may comes with certain conditions). Though few companies have taken this initiative but most companies often turn a blind eye towards this serious issue. Paid Period leaves not only encourages female employees to perform their task better but also improves workplace environment, productivity and loyalty . It’s high time that Employers should take this issue seriously as female employees not only constitute a major portion of their company but also play a massive role in company’s growth and investment too. And by brushing this topic under the carpet, it won’t help a company to grow.

Author,

Aaminah.Z
