This work is a reflection of myself, an attempt to present what has long been buried in my thoughts and heart. The winged figure in chains embodies how I felt during that time — harboring grand dreams and ideals, yet shackled by a reality that isn’t always kind. The wings symbolize my passion for art, their colors representing hope, but the chains on the feet serve as a stark reminder of reality: financial limitations, social pressures, and an enduring sense of alienation.

The boxes containing faces symbolize the alienation I experienced. I felt trapped in social spaces that couldn’t understand my way of thinking or the ideals I clung to tightly. These faces, in some ways, also reflect myself — caught in the inability to truly break free, both physically and mentally.

The dark background illustrates a time when social support was fading, and I often found myself immersed in books or exploring the virtual world in search of community and knowledge. This darkness does not entirely signify despair; instead, it represents a space for reflection and survival. In solitude, I began to realize that sometimes, the world within our minds is the only place where we can truly find freedom.

However, this piece is not merely a portrait of despair. There is a spirit I try to convey through the wings. Even though I feel bound, I know that hope still exists. My dreams of flying may not have come true yet, but I believe these wings still have the potential to carry me beyond limits one day.

Back in the mid-2000s, around 2006 to 2008, I was living in Jakarta, the bustling heart of Indonesia. My days were structured by the 9–5 office job grind, a routine that, while stable, often felt like a cage. The city itself, with its relentless traffic jams and the competitive spirit akin to a jungle, became both my inspiration and my canvas.

This piece, it’s not just lines and shapes on paper; it’s a narrative of my life during that time.
