Some thoughts about how we show up — for life, and for each other.

Losing people who lived well — and what remains after they’re gone

Lake Huron, Ontario — credit David Martin

Two people close to us died on the same day last week — one a friend and neighbour, the other a family member. They didn’t know each other, but they’re linked in my mind now. Both lived fully in their way, and both are deeply missed.

One was the kind of person who could find something to laugh about in any situation. She had a real presence — warm, thoughtful, and somehow always tuned in to the bigger picture. She was artistic and creative, which drew me to her.

I always admired how she spent a year away in Spain, returning with the skills to start a jewelry business — creating new life from beautiful things. And following this her daughter who became the centre of her universe — who embodied in life her spirit of creation of things special and loved.

There was something in her that leaned toward the mystery of life, even when things were difficult. It never made her heavy — it made her real.

The other was someone who found joy in simple, deliberate things. He loved drones, video games, and making a proper brisket. He was happiest in the woods, by the water, or playing video games in his den at home. He was steady, not flashy, and he brought a kind of no-nonsense humour into the room. Even through a long illness, he stayed engaged with the things he loved and the people around him.

Their deaths on the same day felt stark, not symbolic. Life doesn’t pause for processing — it keeps moving. But I needed to stop.
It brought me back to my dad, who passed about a year and a half ago. Quiet but thoughtful, deeply rooted in what mattered to him. I keep seeing these moments of overlap — people who weren’t trying to be remarkable, but who left their mark by simply being themselves.

I don’t know what to do with this, but I keep thinking about how they showed up — fully, honestly, with curiosity and care. Maybe that’s what matters: going forward with more intention, more kindness, and awareness that this is temporary. That’s what makes it matter.

The emotional toll of such a loss is often intensified, and the impact can extend far beyond the mourning period. Psychologists have extensively studied the unique dynamics of grief following the death of a parent, shedding light on how these feelings of loss can saturate both personal and professional spheres.

Research underscores that the death of a parent can trigger intense and prolonged grieving processes. According to Bowlby’s attachment theory (1980), the bond between parent and child is foundational, influencing emotional development and providing a sense of security throughout life. Consequently, the death of a parent can disrupt this fundamental attachment, leading to profound feelings of loss and destabilization.

The impact of parental loss extends beyond the emotional realm, often entering various aspects of one’s life. Grief may manifest in several ways in the professional sphere, impacting job performance, relationships with colleagues, and career decisions. For instance, transitioning to a new job following the death of a parent can be particularly challenging. The stress of adjusting to new responsibilities and the weight of grief can impede concentration and productivity.

Psychological studies support this notion, highlighting the interconnectedness of grief and work life. A study by Bonanno and Kaltman (2001) found that individuals who experienced significant loss, such as the death of a parent, were more likely to report decreased job satisfaction and impaired work performance. Additionally, grief can manifest unexpectedly, such as absenteeism or difficulty maintaining professional relationships, further impacting career trajectory.

The loss of a parent can affect the professional sphere and the social landscape. Witnessing friends or colleagues progress in their personal lives, such as starting families or achieving milestones, may be difficult reminders of the parent’s absence.

This juxtaposition of personal loss against the backdrop of others’ achievements can exacerbate feelings of isolation and alienation, resulting in increased emotional burden on the individual and recurring echoes of the grief process.

Photo by Louis Galvez on Unsplash

Psychological research underscores the significance of social support in navigating grief. Studies have shown that strong social networks can serve as a buffer against the adverse effects of loss, providing comfort and validation during difficult times (Stroebe & Schut, 1999).

However, the experience of bereavement can strain relationships as individuals grapple with their own emotions while attempting to offer support to others.

Simply stated, the death of a parent produces complex and enduring feelings of grief, which can permeate various aspects of an individual’s life. From professional challenges to interpersonal dynamics, the impact of parental loss is profound and multifaceted. Understanding the psychological mechanisms underlying this process is essential in supporting and fostering resilience in those navigating the grief journey.

References:

Bowlby, J.
