Young innovators from all corners of the continent are redefining the future, and at the heart of this movement is Codetrain Africa, in Accra, Ghana. A cutting-edge Software Engineering and Design School focused on empowering ambitious Africans to take their place in the global tech scene. Codetrain isn’t just about coding; it’s about empowerment, community building, and tackling global challenges with global solutions. The recent Codetrain Demo Day exemplified this mission, showcasing projects aimed at solving real-world problems. From projects from Senegal, Germany, Nigeria, Ireland, Canada, and many more, The Codetrain students are already making waves, addressing key issues like health, education, Social issues, and Tech software solutions.

Richard Brandt, CEO of Codetrain, shared at the event how these young talents are poised to take their place in the global market, reflecting the school’s ambition to transform Africa into a tech powerhouse. This aligns with the growing demand for skilled professionals in technology globally, positioning African developers as key contributors to the industry’s growth.

A comprehensive training model doesn’t just stop at teaching programming languages — it builds a strong foundation in problem-solving, creativity, and resilience. As Brandt emphasized during Codetrain’s Berlin Network session, their programs are tailored to address the unique challenges faced by African youth, equipping them with the tools to thrive both locally and internationally.

Codetrain’s philosophy goes beyond individual success; it fosters a collaborative spirit where graduates are encouraged to think beyond themselves. The AfricaBerlin Network highlights this, where Codetrain alumni engage with global tech communities, ensuring a continuous exchange of ideas and opportunities. Codetrain’s graduates aren’t just equipped for the job market — they’re primed to lead and innovate, with the backing of a supportive network of professionals.

The vision is undeniably ambitious, but it’s also achievable. The blend of high-quality tech education, real-world problem-solving, and an emphasis on community is creating a ripple effect that reaches far beyond Africa. The global tech industry is taking notice, and Codetrain’s graduates are proving that Africa’s tech talent is a force to be reckoned with.

As the world increasingly turns to technology to address its most pressing challenges, Codetrain Africa is leading the charge by nurturing the continent’s next generation of innovators. With a focus on solving global issues, Codetrain isn’t just building coders — it’s building leaders.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting an extraordinary group of students from the prestigious KNUST Department of Statistics. This visit served as a perfect opportunity for us to showcase our institution’s commitment to empowering young African talent and providing invaluable insights into careers in the ever-evolving world of technology.

The day commenced with a warm welcome, as our team eagerly greeted the aspiring statisticians from KNUST. The atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation and curiosity. Introductions were made, and it was truly inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and passion that radiated from each student. We instantly knew that this was going to be an extraordinary day of learning, networking, and discovery.

Richard, our our CEO led the students on an immersive campus tour. After that, he sat down with the students for a bit of face time. He wanted to make sure to answer the most pressing questions they had.

How did you manage to excel in your academics while maintaining your place as a key player of the university soccer team?

I took control of my time. I realised that everyone has 24 hours in the day. Even if I slept for 8 hours, I would have 16 hours left. Let’s assume school takes 8 more hours. I’d still have a whole 8 hours left. For me, I invested them in KNUST Soccer team, Unity Hall soccer team representing KNUST and getting a bronze medal at the Ghana University Students Association (GUSA) Games and participating in the West Africa University Games.

I had more than enough time to pursue my hobbies, grow my relationships and do everything else. When I fully accepted this, I was able to make everything in my life work well together.

Do people need to have a software engineering background to enrol at Codetrain?

No you don’t. You only need to be willing to put in the work. And then once you pass our intake assessment, you’re in! Does a STEM background give certain advantages? Absolutely. But the good news is, our program is built with the beginner in mind. Over 70% of Codetrainers have come from non-STEM backgrounds.

What career paths could I access after Codetrain?

Any and every career path. Software engineering is seen as the entryway into a career in tech. Why? It gives you a framework for understanding how technology works. This knowledge shows itself to be valuable for careers in no-code roles like product management and UI/UX design. It’s almost essential for more technical roles like cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

I see that you talk a lot about community and impact. I want to know how Codetrain impacts the community.

Our work in itself creates impact for the country. We are upskilling African talent so they can get decent jobs and improve their livelihood.

The session went on to cover a wide range of topics, from emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and data analysis to industry trends and the importance of continuous learning in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. The students showed remarkable curiosity and enthusiasm, fuelling engaging discussions and inspiring everyone present.

As a primary goal of the event, we also highlighted the unique offerings and advantages of our code school. The students gained a deeper understanding of our curriculum, which focuses on hands-on learning, real-world projects, and industry collaborations. Our mission to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills deeply resonated with the KNUST students, who expressed great interest in our program.

To the students who couldn’t join us for this special occasion, we hope to see you soon. While we missed your presence, feel free to reach out we are always here to provide guidance and support in their tech journey.

A MARRIED MOTHER’S JOURNEY TO BECOMING A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

Fatima, from Guinea Conakry, is a married mother of a lovely two-year-old daughter. She recently completed our one-year training program with the goal of breaking down barriers to women entering the tech industry.

Why did you join Codetrain?

Codetrain was recommended to me by my husband, who received confirmation from a friend. I went on the internet and followed them on all their social media platforms to learn more about what they do. I was ecstatic by what I read, particularly the success stories and women like me who were pursuing careers in software development.

How has the experience been so far?

It has been a good experience, and I have no regrets about joining the Codetrain family. Despite the fact that I am a mother with other responsibilities, I always make it a point to code and submit any assignments that are provided to me. This aided me in developing unique apps that address issues in my neighbourhood. Codetrain’s mission has, without a doubt, made a significant impact on me and my country.

What’s your dream?

I want to be a front-end teacher and extend the knowledge I have gained through Codetrain’s program to help people in my country especially women build mind-blowing apps.

How do you see your dream coming true through tech?

Although I had little knowledge in coding, I never imagined I will come this far. Codetrain made me see the light, and I can confidently attest to the fact that there will come a time technology will be a necessity.

What’s your favourite thing about Codetrain?

I enjoy how the curriculum is designed, and, most importantly, how the teaching fellows make it engaging and simple to the point where anyone can call them at any time, on any day for assistance. In fact, I’m missing them terribly.

APPLY here to join our September cohort.
