Recently discussion about AI has gone through the roof — the launch of ChatGPT and the related pros and cons, potential and issues, and so on, have been dominating the tech — and political — news.

As mentioned in our previous blog post, we think that in the language-learning sphere, the hype is worth it. We really believe that Generative AI can help us created a digital experience similar to a personalised teacher and has the possibility to totally disrupt the language-learning field — particularly the online or app-based language learning platforms.

We are tirelessly committed to improving EF Hello, and are passionate about making language learning as intuitive as possible. Gen-AI is a powerful tool for us to do just this.

When you ask academics and learning experts what the most effective way to learn a language is, the consensus is to have someone to explain your mistakes at the moment you make them. Getting an explanation in real-time of why your answer is wrong and why the correct answer is correct. This has also been our experience as language learners. Within our team at EF Hello, we’ve been learning everything from Chinese and German through to Korean and Swedish.

EF Hello started out in 2018 as a way to learn English as a foreign language — improving thousands of students’ opportunities through language learning. Learning a language is hard. Getting to grips with grammar is tedious. Understanding variations in register in a foreign language is tricky. We’ve heard them all. It is not uncommon for people to think that learning a foreign language is beyond them; that apart from a few words to be used on holiday, languages are only for those with a linguistic aptitude, or ‘a good ear’.

At EF Hello, we’re life-long language learners and we’ve seen first-hand how difficult it is, without intensive education, to improve. However, the key here is ‘intensive’. Those who master languages dedicate a lot of time and effort to learning, or are so fully immersed by living in a different country that language acquisition is unavoidable. Learning a language is something achievable by anyone, anywhere, no matter what age — it is merely a question of intensity.

Breaking down ‘intensity’ exposes a number of key components: repetition, authentic situations in which to practice, and learning from mistakes. In a classroom or real-life situation all three of these elements are fulfilled — however, this severely limits who can learn a language. Over the years innovative developments in language education have aimed to address these limitations and democratise language learning as a process open to all.

We’ve witnessed how much language learning has developed since most of us first started 20 years ago: from originally slogging through the Michel Thomas CDs to now being able to download an app and learn anywhere, anytime. We’ve seen how casual learning apps have incorporated repetition, how they make a good effort to replicate real-life scenarios to provide authentic situations for practice.

Yet, however innovative these developments have been, there has always been something missing: learning from mistakes. Generally, when you make a mistake in a language learning app, you are told it’s wrong — it’s then up to you to figure out why.
