The hottest week of my life (literally the heat was suffocating!) is over. Also, the market crashed once again so it is not a pleasant end to the trip, especially with a ton of work awaiting me. I did not expect too much out of this trip, but surprisingly enough I gained a LOT after this week. Here are some instant observations and takeaways.

Mural paintings all over Austin!

What I did at Consensus:

Hosted a private “Steakwallet x KryptoSeoul Proof of Steak” lunch. It was invite-only due to limited space and tone/manner of the event, and it went so well. Most who were invited showed up on time, and we had an absolute blast. Also, the space was fully ACed, so people were generally content :) Some people question the small scale of my events but I strongly think the focus and human connection matters, so curation is key.

Participated in a Women in Web3 panel at WRST NFT Gallery opening event. “It is ok to be slow and imperfect. The process is what matters most.”

Hosted a casual Korean gathering at Stakefish Daniel Hwang’s Airbnb. It was very last-minute planning, but many good people showed up and we were able to comfortably connect there. Before Consensus, I initially created a “Let’s go to Austin” Telegram groupchat amongst Koreans, and it mounted up to over 150 people. I could NOT put that group to waste :P

good solid Korean frens

Reunited with old crypto frens. I met people from the Fed, DOJ, RMIT, Sequoia, and the list goes on. It was such an eye-opening experience! Five years in crypto, I feel like my network has grown more than ever, yet I realize that I have much more to go in connecting with solid players in and out of crypto.

What I observed:

Terra, Luna, UST… everyone is curious what the Korean sentiment & situation is like in response to the Terra crash. And they do NOT think Terra is a Korean project, more like a global one — which I think is a relief. Humility is the way to go for a leader. Since literally everyone is talking about Terra, the need for DeFi regulation or group action comes up to the surface.

Korean participation in global participation is growing day by day. As I mentioned earlier, nearly 200 Koreans flew to Austin for Consensus, and I am sure it is more than ETH Denver, which was quite a lot. Especially this time, people from conglomerates, securities companies, media companies, gaming companies attended — mainly to survey the main trends and people in the scene.

Private events are the alpha. Of course, massive, flashy parties are fun and all, but the actual fruitful conversations and connections are made through private, more intimate events. For one, I had the chance to connect one-by-one with Polygon C-levels, and the entire Interchain Foundation team including Ethan Buchman himself. Also, I attended a Federal Reserve Roundtable discussion which was extremely focused. It reminded me of the Standard policy days — it actually felt great. By spending five years grinding myself in operations/execution, I did not really have the capacity to think deeply about the implications of certain trends. These focused, insightful conversation definitely opened my eyes and helped me turn on my policy brain again.

Dilemma between commerciality (shill factor) vs sincerity (substance). This isn’t a binary division — there needs to be a balance between the two to build your brand. I’m always keen on personal branding, and on how to deliver that in a successful yet substantial/solid way. Are events meant to be random in terms of curation and quality, as long as it draws a large crowd? Are numbers the only measure in describing success and potential? It would be great to get more insights from others on this and discuss together :)

I have never experienced such intense heat. I nearly passed out one time, and I am glad to hear that next year’s Consensus will NOT be in June.

Random fun photos!

I just got back from Denver to home in Seoul. During my 7-day quarantine period, I thought it would be wise to organize my thoughts and feelings about ETH Denver.

with my cool, cute friend Anett

A healthy mix of OGs and newbies — Honestly, I thought ETH Denver will be mostly full of OGs, but I didn’t know that it would be this big. It was wonderful to see many new (and young!) faces in the scene, trying actively to catch up and throw great ideas. The largest interest from institutions and “outsiders” (not in the crypto crowd yet but observing or interested in the space) so far.

I could not recognize most faces — and I know a LOT of people in crypto space. Whenever I recognized a OG friend on the street, I jumped with delight and my face brightened up with joy. It just means a lot to reunite with those who’ve went through the ups and downs and have done consistent work in the space, without just coming for the NFT hype. Also, it was hard to focus on the people that I trust, due to the huge volume of people flooding out of every venue in Denver.

The NFT and DAO hype is real, and I don’t know if I welcome 100% of it. I do appreciate what these worlds offer, but it’s getting a tad too much imo. It almost feels like a must factor when you want to be seen “cool” in crypto or something.

ETH Denver had an inclusive program in terms of sponsors and presentation content. So called “eth killers” took part in many ways — which was surprising to see. Just an amusing observation, but Harmony and Polygon went all-in in terms of afterparties.

I always feel this way, but I felt strong as ever the need to step up in my game and keep learning and building — otherwise I’ll be swept away by this never-ending wave of new ideas and brilliant minds. This space is exploding — keep being consistent and be humble.

I’m known as the “nice” person in the crypto scene, and I’m not sure that is a good thing. Male-dominant macho culture (no exception in South Korea- no surprise, right? But even in the young generation!)still exists — and will forever exist imo. I never express this thought, but I strongly felt this sense of exclusivity during this trip. There is discrimination in terms of gender but also in terms of job function. Do I need to have a large sum of capital as an investor in order to be taken seriously? Devoting my time and passion into creating a healthy community is still looked down upon — whch is ironic, because people keep stressing how important the community is. I won’t go too deep into this, but this consistent ignorance discourages me and challenges me in unnecessary ways.

My KryptoDenver private lunch event went so smoothly — I could not ask for anything else. It was absolutely perfect, in terms of the vibe, food, people. My Denver trip was half complete after successfully finishing this event — then I MCed in ETH Denver main event at the Sports Castle Infinity Stage, and that went pretty well as well. I was concerned that I might ruin the stage (and I don’t make good jokes!!), but thankfully it passed by well. That perfected my trip… then the PEOPLE I met in Denver was cherry on the top. The stress I got from preparing for the trip and going through the trip was the highest so far, among all my trips in the past — but the level of satisfaction and “reward” I got was the highest as well.

Thanks for being at the event! The food was even amazing (and healthy!). Good friend Obi on the right.

8. Initial response to EST(Erica Social Token): Amazing experiment. How can I use EST? Establishing solid use cases for EST is something I have to work on consistently. More to be shared in the following month!

These observations and thoughts are very rough — this is literally a rough draft. Also, I’m still adjusting to reality in Seoul and getting out of the Denver daze. That said, I simply want to emphasize that this trip has inspired/motivated in so many ways, and I wish to become a stronger and more competent person in pushing my Erica Social Token project and BUIDL Asia conference this year. LFG!

The snowy Denver weather was so beautiful!

I’m back from a short yet productive trip from Lisbon. During my fleeting time there, I was able to host a KryptoLisbon meetup, moderate a panel on Cosmoverse conference, and catch up irl with a bunch of crypto friends. Although fears of COVID did affect me, as soon as I arrived at the Incheon airport, I was all for it.

When I travel abroad, I always try to host a KryptoSeoul meetup, whether it is small or large. Although I did not know anything about Lisbon, I decided to organize my own event by partnering up with The Base Lisbon, a coworking space in the center of Lisbon.

The meetup went extremely well, and we had a superb panel of 6 panelists: Augie from Sequoia, Baek from Hashed, Peng from Tendermint, Vanessa from CoinFund, David from dYdX Foundation, and Tim from The Block. Since it was such a diverse panel, we covered general topics that highlighted 2021 — DeFi, NFTs, DAOs. During the 1-hour panel, so much insight was poured in coming from different angles. What was most impressive was that the panelists had a balanced viewpoint in that they don’t just see everything as a rosy future. Concerns about security, regulations, usability, etc were all brought up. It was truly a magical experience.

Here are a few photos to remember the event! I’m so blessed to have amazing people and builders around me.

Oh, and the meetup was briefly covered in Korean media CoinNess! HackAtom Seoul 2019 was the first offline Cosmos hackathon in Seoul, so the Korean community was excited with the news. Also, HackAtom Seoul was the official hackathon of BUIDL Asia 2019 — after all, the essence and spirit of BUIDLing can be captured at hackathons, right? :)

Seoul Startup Hub was our venue sponsor, and we had great sponsors like Dokia Capital, IOV, Chorus One, Cosmostation, Lunamint, Owdin, etc. D Street was our media partner and produced a video as amazing as this: https://vimeo.com/351739552/672499039c

Amazing venue, amazing participants, and amazing staff.

Chjango Unchained and I (Erica) were the main organizers that planned and eventually made this happen. To be honest, the Korean blockchain developer community is not as strong as Berlin nor San Francisco, so I was a bit concerned about the reception by the community.

BUIDL Asia 2019 happened more than two weeks ago — it still seems like a dream! KryptoSeoul hosted the second BUIDL conference in Seoul in July 22–23rd. This time BUIDL rebranded to BUIDL Asia instead of BUIDL Seoul, in the hope of expanding its presence in the Asian community as the most technical blockchain conference in the region.

Overall, I believe BUIDL Asia 2019 received generally positive feedbacks, as we tried our best to deliver more than what we promised to our 41 speakers, sponsors, and partners. The official website is buidl.asia, and we plan to maintain this domain for the upcoming conference in 2020. You can still check out our speaker, sponsor, partner lineup as well as the agenda. Presentation videos will be released in our KryptoSeoul Youtube channel.

Day 1 of BUIDL Asia 2019. I appreciate every project for taking the time to fly in to Seoul from all parts of the world! It was magical and I am simply blessed.

Also, I would like to thank the KryptoSeoul team (June and Chris), supporters (Jaeyun and Jooyeon), staff (Circle Connection crew) that made BUIDL Asia 2019 come to life. Thank you so much for all your support and passion.

BUIDL Asia 2020 will happen in July 2020 in Seoul — I will announce the exact date and location in a few months.

Last week, I attended the 42nd Meeting of the EMEAP Working Group in Banking Supervision from August 30th to September 1st. It was held in Jeju Island, so only an hour long flight from Seoul! The conference was hosted by Bank of Korea, and my proud co-worker Ash was nominated as an outside speaker.

Here we are at Gimpo Airport, ready to depart!

Packets provided by BOK. The conference was held at Lotte Hotel, so we stayed there as well.

Look at the sky!

View from the hotel room. Beautiful! Jeju Island is such an amazing place. Highly recommended.

Official invitation and packet prepared by BOK.

Now we go on to enjoy what Jeju is famous for!

Perfect dinner. Jeju is famous for its pork — especially for the thick meat of black pig. Also, the seaweed soup is popular, especially since sea urchin is in it. It makes the soup more deep in flavor.

Also THIS is famous. Rice drink called Makgulri — but with Jeju’s special peanuts inside! The taste is so great that we had another bottle towards the end of the trip.

Picture of myself ☺

And another one the next day! It is always difficult (and suffocating) to be dressed in a formal suit.

Ash and me. We make a pretty good team since we complement each other— I like the fact that we can exchange ideas 100% in English.

Ash gave a talk to the participants, who are mostly involved in the regulation/supervision sector of government-owned banks. Ash explained the basic concepts of blockchain, Bitcoin, Ethereum, ICOs, and current and upcoming issues related to regulation. Since there is a lack of regulations with regards to cryptocurrencies and the general blockchain industry, some take advantage of the flexible system. However, Ash stressed that proper and efficient regulation from a government-level is necessary and helpful for industry growth. If it provides the right incentives, players in the cryptoworld would willingly abide by the regulations. If they are regulated too strictly, they will always find another way to evade the regulations ( such as moving to another country to execute their project, etc), so it would actually be countereffective.

The participants at the conference were awed at what Ash had to say. I personally was astounded by how deep the gap in perspective is between the traditional government banks and cryptoworld- however, it was great to see that the officials showed tremendous interest in the new trend and that they were willing to compromise and come up with a wise solution.

The sky looks surreal. Beautiful!

At the formal dinner hosted by BOK. The location was at SEAAS Hotel.

But we decided to try Jeju-style food while we are at Jeju, so we went to Hyupjae Beach and tried another type of Makgulri and food. So delish!

I loved the sea at night. A bit daunting, but so refreshing.

The next day at breakfast! It was Japanese style which I like.

Before leaving Jeju, we randomly decided to visit Teddy Bear Museum, which was a 5 minute walk from the hotel. SOOOO many teddy bears! Never seen that many in my life.

So majestic. lol

And then we had to head back to Gimpo Airport to return to Seoul.

What a wonderful, insightful business trip! Since I am a international policy major, I am extremely interested in the process of policymaking, and the factors that help or hinder efficient decision-making. In the world of blockchain, since it is a completely new industry with no regulations, it is practically constructing something out of nothing. The space is practically like a blank piece of paper. So the process of getting policy/regulations experts involved in this world is just interesting to watch. I will continuously follow up on regulations/governance related issues, and the intersection between cryptoworld and International Relations.

End of story! More stories to come..
