Starting with web projects as a youth, he diverged from a path in law, inspired by his father, to pursue technology and art. He touches on making commercial websites, his music projects, and a stint in cryptocurrency, highlighting the shift from small-town familiarity to the anonymity of city life in Belo Horizonte. Omar Lobato also explores how conditions like sleep deprivation enhance his creativity, leading to discussions on latent inhibition and the creative process. His upcoming work “GHOST” illustrates his minimalist approach to generative art, balancing order with disorder. The interview showcases Omar Lobato’s diverse talents and anticipates his future contributions to art and technology.

Profile of Omar Lobato：

https://linktr.ee/omarlobato

https://www.instagram.com/omarlob/

https://twitter.com/seigneurrrr

===========================Background=======================

Jimi Wen:

Cool, are you still in school?

omarlobato:

No, I finished my computer science course in 2021, but I’ve been playing with HTML, CSS, and WordPress since I was 12. I’m 27 in April.

Jimi Wen:

So, you were making your own website since you were 12?

omarlobato:

Yes, I worked a lot on websites since I was a kid. I also played with a Linux distribution called BackTrack (now Kali Linux), did tricks with pentests, DDoS attacks to test security, but I always liked making HTML and CSS websites.

Jimi Wen:

Wow, you started earning income when you were a kid?

omarlobato:

Yes, I worked on commercial websites for local stores using Joomla or WordPress, basically for local people. This was back in the 2011s.

Jimi Wen:

Nice, helping society to get on the internet or reduce the gap in internet connectivity.

omarlobato:

I had some musical projects and a band, so I spent on instruments or equipment. I produced rap beats/electronic music before starting to create generative art. I also got into crypto in 2013, mined BTC using an ASIC miner, but only earned around $25 in a month, which I spent in one day at the bar.

Jimi Wen:

Did you hold on to your BTC?

omarlobato:

No, sadly.

Jimi Wen:

Why did you enrol in law school?

omarlobato:

My father is a lawyer, and I tried to follow his steps, but I didn’t like the course. It wasn’t for me. After that, I switched to a tech school.

Jimi Wen:

I see, my parents are professors, so I got a PhD, but I didn’t stay in academia.

omarlobato:

It’s a very valuable degree. I will have a PhD one day and will focus on studies in the future.

Jimi Wen:

PhD is printed, no fixed supply, lol.

omarlobato:

Yes, but I think it’s a very valuable thing for a person to have that title. It’s not necessary, but it adds a lot to your professional standing.

Jimi Wen:

Inequality is quite large in Brazil, right?

omarlobato:

Yes, in all places we see inequality here.

Jimi Wen:

Given your parents and family members’ professions, you would be either upper-middle or middle-upper class. So, you would be more privileged than the average fellow countryman.

omarlobato:

We are middle class. My father earns $1000 a month in his work, and my mother has a law degree but works as a Portuguese teacher in high school. I’ve become more established after Web3 and generative art two years ago.

Jimi Wen:

But you would have less economic burden to provide for your family and pursue your own dreams?

omarlobato:

Yes, for sure!

Jimi Wen:

How many percent of Brazilians have a degree like you?

omarlobato:

I think around 30–40%. Some areas are very saturated, like law, urban engineering, philosophy, and there’s a “hype” for tech courses like computer sciences and system engineering. But these maths courses are very hard for the majority to complete.

Jimi Wen:

I like maths; I was a high school champion at the school level. Other than generative art, what other art forms did you practise?

omarlobato:

I used oil paints, took photographs, made music, and tried to make good food. I think making food is an art, like you. I’m not good with texts, but I love to read.

Jimi Wen:

Yes, totally. I notice you didn’t mention poetry. Linguistic art is itself another form.

omarlobato:

I’m not good with texts. Lyrics in music were my weak point. I have a bit of difficulty writing texts or articles. But I love to read.

Jimi Wen:

So, when you made rap hip-hop tracks, your friend wrote the lines and rapped?

omarlobato:

No, I wrote, but it’s difficult. I try my best at composing lyrics/poetry, but personally, I think it’s not so good. I’m better at composing with musical chords and notes.

Jimi Wen:

When did you find out generative art was one, if not your favourite medium to express creativity or emotion?

omarlobato:

In November 2020, a friend introduced me to Objkt, and I started creating something on Blender. I was learning about 3D models, but then my friend showed me FxHash and generative art with the Hydra-synth by Olivia Jack. So, I started coding in Hydra and was amazed because I never thought before that we could make art with code.

Jimi Wen:

Which of your works resulted in “aha” moments for you? The ones where you felt you grew as an artist or human being?

omarlobato:

Yes, I have “Secret Stairways” and “Stains on a Canvas” for generative art. In music, I designed an album cover for a great friend who passed away one year ago but left behind beautiful music. I’m glad to have been a part of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L7fz-X78aQ

[Secret Stairways]

https://www.fxhash.xyz/generative/slug/secret-stairways

[Stains on a Canvas]

https://www.artblocks.io/project/365

Jimi Wen:

Did you use shaders on the album background?

omarlobato:

No, I used the Perlin noise function in colours and Photoshop filters.

===========================LonelyMetropolis=====================

omarlobato:

-I invite you to come here; you are very welcome! I was born in Belo Horizonte, but I lived my entire life in Pompeu. I moved to Belo Horizonte two years ago. I really don’t like big cities.

Jimi Wen:

Beautiful city! Thanks, it would be my pleasure. For university, you had to go back to Belo Horizonte?

omarlobato:

Belo Horizonte has 2 million people, and is 150 km far from Pompeu. Yes, I studied at UniBH.

Jimi Wen:

Was there any particular city you had in mind for your upcoming work “GHOST”?

Omarlobato:

All those big cities.

Our biggest city is Sao Paulo, 11 million.

Then Rio with 10 million.

Jimi Wen:

So Sao Paulo, Rio.

Omarlobato:

Metropolis is full of people but at the same time, I feel alone in the crowd.

Jimi Wen:

Is Belo Horizonte considered big?

Omarlobato:

Yes, the smallest of the big. The other cities in Minas Gerais have a maximum of 100k. There’s a joke that Belo Horizonte is a great countryside.

Jimi Wen:

Lol, because it doesn’t have 10 million people? But I saw some lake or something quite beautiful.

Omarlobato:

Yes, and because there isn’t much to do there. It’s the Pampulha Lake, where Niemeyer projected that church.

Jimi Wen:

See, everything is connected.

Omarlobato:

It was very controversial in that epoch.

Because mostly the Catholics were familiar with Gothic or Roman architectures. So Oscar made a totally different church. People complained, but nowadays it’s an icon of architecture.

Jimi Wen:

I admire the confidence Oscar had.

Omarlobato:

Yes, it was groundbreaking at that time. I’ve also seen Iskra Velitchkova sharing some of his projects on Twitter. This made me think his work is famous around the Brazilian bubble too. He had another edifice in Belo Horizonte, which looks like Copan in Sao Paulo but is smaller.

And also the Edificio JK in Belo Horizonte too, was projected by him, another habitational complex, one of the big buildings of Belo Horizonte, this one is more brutallistic, dont have his curves signature.

Jimi Wen:

His works are now easily associated with generativeness of forms, but his render time probably would have been weeks, if not months.

Jimi Wen:

Can you talk more about the feeling of loneliness despite being around crowds?

Omarlobato:

Yes, I lived almost my entire life in a small city of 30k people. Everyone knows who you are, and if you need help, people know you and help you. In a big city, even if there are 1000 people in a crowd, no one wants to know who you are. People just pass through you like you’re a ghost. People always run in a rush, like ants, running to finish their jobs, to gain their life. This was a big shock of reality for me when I moved to big cities.

Jimi Wen:

Yes, I feel that way too. Everyone wants to finish something rather than take time to start something.

Omarlobato:

Everyone is running, lacking time.

Jimi Wen:

Perhaps art creation is a luxury of time.

Omarlobato:

Indeed, those who have time and those who sacrifice their time to create art.

===========================Creativity=======================

Jimi Wen:

How does your creative body clock work? For me, it is very erratic.

Omarlobato:

For me, it always works in both music and art when I haven’t slept for a long time, and after fighting sleep, I can have a lot of creativity. Sometimes when I’m drunk also.

Jimi Wen:

There is science behind this. We evolved to have this function, latent inhibition.

Omarlobato:

But during the day, it’s hard. It works more in the late night when it’s all in silence.

Jimi Wen:

To focus, in order to survive. It shuts 99% of the sensation or intuition our brain is capable of processing like GPUs. Latent inhibition turns our brain more like CPU, serial processing for maximum efficiency.

omarlobato:

Yes, I think there’s some magic when we fight against sleep; we can become a bit more active.

Jimi Wen:

For me, it is very erratic. There is science behind this; we evolve to have this function, latent inhibition, to focus, in order to survive.

Yes, instead of being more focused, by daydreaming, we might find what our heart/brain is calling for.

omarlobato:

For sure!

Jimi Wen:

Back to the upcoming work “GHOST,” I think this is your largest edition yet, right?

omarlobato:

Yes!

Jimi Wen:

Since you cannot play with the palette to carry more editions?

omarlobato:

I know it’s hard to create a work fully monochrome to maintain a high amount of different variations, but this work will not repeat even with one palette.

Jimi Wen:

Yeah, it’s all in the composition.

omarlobato:

If this work has colours, it will have no soul.

Jimi Wen:

Sometimes constraints are sources to push us into more creativity.

omarlobato:

Exactly, doing the maximum with the minimum.

Jimi Wen:

It’s really amazing to see that beyond traditional optical art, the spaces you create are balanced spaces with infinite variations. That is the most difficult thing.

omarlobato:

I appreciate you liked this! This is what enchants me about randomness.

Jimi Wen:

The balance of disorder and order in GHOST. Spaces emerge, space being the order for our latter stages of our visual cortex. Disorder at two levels, line by line level, and composition level.

omarlobato:

Totally! We will have a bit of slight differences in the compositions one made with full rectangles and another with triangles.

Jimi Wen:

-Thank you for your time I think let’s wrap up here, and await your upcoming drop.

TL;NR

Conflux?

Shuan:：
<img

Multi-chain generative art platform Genify will join the Conflux ecosystem to jointly build the cultural circle of generative art

Genify (genify.xyz/ ) is an innovative multi-chain generative art platform incubated by Lambda. As a leading NFT platform in the field of generative art, Genify will officially launch on Conflux Network next week.

This collaboration with Conflux is a significant step towards expanding generative and crypto art into a broader market. Genify and Conflux will use Hong Kong as a hub to jointly foster the development of generative art in Asia and beyond. Together we will explore cooperation in the areas of encrypted art commercialization and brand digital assets.

Just as Tyler Hobbs, one of the most renowned artists in this field, said, “There’s a new art form on the rise. Generative art has existed since the 1960s, but the new on-chain generative art platforms are pushing the medium in an exciting new direction. While many of the generative techniques are the same, the goals for the program output are wildly different from before. The direct path from the script to the viewer, as well as the large number of iterations, encourages artists to create a special class of artistic algorithm, what I’ll refer to here as long-form generativism.”

[Fidenza by Tyler Hobbs]

Today, platforms like Art Blocks, fxhash, and Genify allow the artist to create a generative script (e.g., Fidenza) that is written to the Ethereum/Tezos/Conflux blockchain, making it permanent, immutable, and verifiable. Next, the artist specifies how many iterations will be available to be minted by the script. A typical choice is in the 500 to 1000 range. When a collector mints an iteration, the script is run to generate a new output, and that output is wrapped in an NFT and transferred directly to the collector. Nobody, including the collector, the platform, or the artist, knows precisely what will be generated when the script is run, so the full range of outputs is a surprise to everyone.

In the past two years, generative art has become mainstream among artists. Works like Fidenza have been sold through Christie’s and Sotheby’s auction houses, with individual works trading for several hundred thousand to millions of dollars. Among the collectors are many world-renowned museums and galleries. Generative art, as one of the most successful cases in the field of cryptocurrency, has been brought into the real world.

[Garden Monuments by Zancan and Yazid]

Meanwhile, artists from many countries and regions around the world are looking to enter the world of Web3 and art through blockchain and generative art. Genify has successfully curated and discovered many new promising artists and artistic groups from places like Brazil, France, and Taipei, China, and has also attracted Eastern art collectors to join the community of generative art collectors.

Currently, the primary distribution platforms for artists reside on the Ethereum and Tezos blockchains. However, Ethereum’s high gas fees have become a barrier for many artists looking to enter the generative art collection field. On the other hand, Tezos is not EVM-compatible.

To address these challenges, the Genify team has been searching for a blockchain that offers low gas fees, a supportive community atmosphere, and EVM compatibility. After careful consideration, they ultimately decided to choose Conflux.

[Arboretum by matt perkins on Genify]

Shaun8149, the founder of Genify, said, “We have been paying attention to Conflux since 2020, and we have noticed the advantages and progress of Conflux in terms of technology, community, and culture. Since 2023, Asia and Hong Kong have become the next most crucial areas for cryptocurrencies. Therefore, choosing Conflux is like choosing to stand on the side of the future.”

Chief Curator Jimi Wen from the community and artist Halo9999 spoke highly of Genify’s decision to join the Conflux ecosystem. Halo9999 gladly agreed to have their recent significant creations launched on Conflux. As an artist curated by Feralfile, Halo has shown support for the Genify community and the artist group through their actions toward Conflux.

Genify was founded by members 2211, 8149, and 6109 from the cryptopunk community. They are artists and collectors who, apart from collecting punks, also own a substantial amount of rare generative art pieces. For instance, the Fidenza 475 collected by 8149 is ranked fourth in rarity in the entire Fidenza series.

Genify originated as the world’s largest third-party community for generative art enthusiasts. The community was established for better discussion, learning, and research of generative art, and it received a $2 million investment from MultiCoin Capital in 2021 (the community was named Eyesfi at that time). It eventually evolved into a primary issuance platform for generative art, dedicated to discovering and nurturing emerging and young generative artists, and allowing most people to obtain their first generative art collection at an affordable price.

Shaun8149 said, “In just two short years, the price of top generative artworks has risen from a few hundred dollars each to millions of dollars each. I still remember the excitement of an ordinary Uber driver in our community when they used their subsidy to buy their first piece of generative art. I want there to be more people like that, allowing more people to get exposed to and purchase generative art. That is our mission.”

【Evenly-Spaced FlowLines by shaun8149】

About Conflux

Conflux is a permissionless Layer 1 blockchain connecting decentralized economies across borders and protocols. With a hybrid PoW/PoS consensus, Conflux provides a fast, secure, and scalable blockchain environment with zero congestion, low fees, and improved network security.

As the only regulatory-compliant public blockchain in China, Conflux provides a unique advantage for projects building and expanding into Asia. Conflux has collaborated with global brands and government entities in the region on blockchain and metaverse initiatives, including the city of Shanghai, McDonald’s China, and Oreo.

To learn more about Conflux, visit confluxnetwork.org

Website: genify.xyz
Twitter: twitter.com/GenifyHQ
Medium: genifyxyz.medium.com

Therefore, Genify will integrate an innovative shared royalty transaction protocol and build an incentive pool based on it, which will motivate users participating in transactions with most of this income.

Under the mechanism of shared royalty transactions, in addition to the traditional artist royalty income, curators and trading users will fully enjoy the prosperity dividends of the trading market.

The Curation System

Genify hopes to form a prosperously developing ecology of artists through the curator system, building a web3 art influence network and constantly curating new artists to promote platform works to achieve better market performance. Curators need to obtain curation tokens through token staking and then consume them in curations. As key recommender of artists and promoter of project release, curators will obtain part of the transaction income from their curated projects.

Prosperous Multi-Chain Art Platform

Genify hopes to become a globalized Web3 generative art cultural center. In addition to Lambda, it will gradually connect Ethereum, Arbitrum, BSC, Polygon and other chains, and bring incremental users and collector artist groups to the Web3 world through generative art and NFT.

On Genify, users can freely trade and collect generative art NFTs through different blockchains.

Full-Stack NFT Infrastructure Services

Genify leverages the security, speed and scalability of Lambda decentralized storage network to expand a richer generative art ecology.

Based on Lambda’s decentralized storage, Genify provides artists and developers with full-stack modules for generative art testing, NFT transaction protocols, NFT issuance protocols and NFT storage services. At the same time, the all-new LWS (Lambda Web3 Service) data storage service delivers a secure, fast and reliable user experience.

On Genify, artists can efficiently test and create their own generative art collections, and set attributes, rarity and meta data for each work. They are free to self-own or collaborate with curators to issue and sell NFTs.

Genify hopes to build better art brands and explore more business possibilities together with the community, artists and curators. Apart from Artblocks in California and FxHash in France, Genify will become an important artistic force born in Asia and one of the world’s major art platforms.

Monogram by Arctic — Introduction to LNS Generative Artwork

Artist Introduction

Arctic is a group of generative artists consisting of Zhi Bei You (Cc, Jin Cicheng) and Cosmic Boat (Van, Wang Qi), who focus on using mathematical and computer algorithms to simulate, explore, and develop new contemporary brush systems, as well as trajectory and structural algorithms to compose humanistic generative artworks. On November 22, they released their first generative art project based on p5.js: Hillhouse on Tezos generative art platform Fxhash.

Cicheng Jin, a generative artist, has an MA in Creative Entrepreneurship from the University of Bristol and is the founder of the Arctic Circle community. Originally a collector of Epigraphy steles and stickers, he has since transformed into a generative art collector and artist. He has experience in traditional Chinese calligraphy, an appreciation of the Epigraphy field, and development experience in quantitative investment and computer fields.

Wang Qi is a generative artist. He is a student of digital media technology at Jiangnan University.

Now he wants to learn everything and hopes to be able to do everything in the future and be qualified to fight hard with all the masters.

Arctic Masterpiece: Hillhouse

Link: https://www.fxhash.xyz/generative/slug/hillhouse

Natural noise as a mountain, overlapping shade into a house, Hillhouse starts from the most straightforward principle and goes to haze. The Berlin noise changes to fit the trend of the hill, and the gap in the middle of the hill makes it hazy; the irregular polygon stacking creates a halo effect, adding an oriental flavor to the roof.

Monogram

Monogram was an important form of authorization and encryption in many ancient civilizations, such as Cartouche, which represented the name of the pharaoh in ancient Egyptian civilization, Signum, which symbolized personal identity in ancient Roman civilization, and Huaya, an ancient Chinese form of personal signature. However, with the development of the times, such encryption methods of mapping personal identity have gradually shifted from tangible signatures and seals to de-visualized forms such as hashing in cryptography and its derivative blockchain domain names.

Admittedly, the shift to string mapping has greatly reduced the complexity of declaring people’s personal identities and ensured authenticity when mapping. However, individuality is gradually lost in this abstraction process. First, the information about personal traits that can be expressed in strings is very limited, while the information load of graphics is far greater. Second, in terms of people’s ability to remember, humans remember words much less than they remember graphics.

Therefore, I can’t help wondering: why can’t we map both? And if so, what form could be the vehicle for visualizing such a mapping?

Generative art is one of the best solutions. The randomness, diversity, and artistry of generative art, combined with blockchain domain names, allows the mapped graphics to generate aesthetically meaningful and iconic images in perpetuity and without repetition. Inspired by this, I created the project “Monogram”. In “Monogram”, the system will use a random movement of my original brush to pay homage and reminisce to the Monogram used in ancient times for signatures, evoking the original desire for individual expression in people.

The LNS, as a Web3 digital identity and its bundled generative artwork “Mongram”, also becomes a premium digital asset that domain holders can sell or lease for income.

Overall, LNS will simplify the complexities of wallet addresses and other data identifiers in the Lambda ecosystem, while offering some interesting commercial possibilities, thus becoming one of the key components for people to build their brand and identity on the Lambda network.
