At the heart of a company are employees, and it’s common knowledge when employees feel appreciated they tend to surpass expectations at work. With this in mind, it’s important organizations embrace reward systems to motivate employees to put their best foot forward. The recognition of employees who deliver stellar results creates an atmosphere for better performance and productivity to thrive.

Furthermore, developing a reward and recognition system goes a long way in retaining employees. When done correctly, a well-designed reward system is a motivator that fosters healthy competition which in turn impacts the overall productivity of the organization as employee morale is given a boost which reflects positively in their individual and teamwork performance. A reward system everyone can see with its criteria spelled out helps build trust and creates transparency between employees and employers, eliminating despair and dissatisfaction.

There are several ways employee appreciation or recognition can be shown, from physical incentives like foodstuff and groceries to team hang-outs and the list is endless. However, as the world moves from physical trade to e-commerce with the bulk of transactions happening online, organizations should not be left behind as others move with the tide. Giftcards are here to stay and they’re here to solve all the hassles experienced with getting physical incentives.

Giftcards are prepaid cards with a stored value which can be used by anyone they’re given to. Giftcards can access goods in physical or online retail stores globally and locally. They’ve got fixed monetary value in them as placed by the person or organisation gifting them. The merits of using Giftcards as a form of employee recognition to incentivize employees are a lot, nonetheless, permit us to give a few below:

1. Ease and Convenience: A Giftcard is an easy way to show appreciation, and it’s also a convenient way to give employees the freedom to choose what they want as a reward, arming them with a variety of choices. A giftcard is chosen with the recipient in mind, implying the boss or organization is humane and thoughtful about their interests outside of work and cares about what makes them happy, helping to promote a work-life balance.

2. Memorability: As much as we believe money is a legal tender that should always be doled out and dispensed, most times how we give out this money makes all the difference. Cash given to employees to cater for everyday expenses is good, but Giftcards are better. Giftcards give a memorable experience. Employees are more likely to use it for something or someone special, like a night out at their favorite restaurant with friends and family, a spa treatment with a loved one or even splurge on their fantasy list. All of these and even more help to make Giftcards a better way of incentivizing employees.

3. Speed of use: The tangibility of Giftcards provides your employees with an instant reward as opposed to waiting for their next paycheck or even months between performance reviews. This creates an immediate sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

4. Cost-effective: Giftcards come with major discounts making them cost-effective. A case in point is where you want to get your employees a meal ticket at a fancy or upscale restaurant, as opposed to the normal walk-in price that may be pegged at 15,000 Naira, a Giftcard can get the same meal at a 10 or 20 percent discount, helping the organization cut costs but still obtain same value.

Overall, Giftcards are a great way to give your employees something more than just a bonus or perk. Not only do they enjoy the experience that comes with it, but it also helps to create memorability and a bond between the organization and the employees. It also helps the organization save costs and eliminate hassles. Give your employees a Giftcard today and join the league of employers who enjoy supercharged and super motivated employees out-beating and outwitting competition.

The giftcards market is among the fastest growing retail segments in ecommerce. In fact, the giftcards market has proven to be an exploding success and is projected to soar higher through 2022. Given that there is more knowledge and people now understand that giftcards are a good alternative to cash, it’s apparent that we’re giving more giftcards as gifts and people want to spend their giftcard balances at a faster rate than in previous years. There are three main factors contributing to the expansion of this market:

Consumer spending habit

The primary factor is the growing number of consumers who have developed a high demand for giftcards accompanied by the increasing acceptance of giftcards by retailers. Betterstill is the increasing ease with which card issuers integrate the digital cards into payment systems for seamless transactions on the go.

Development of e-giftcards

Since the emergence of e-giftcards, the purchasing ability of buyers has been enhanced a great deal. The adoption of innovative payment methods has swayed the buyer behaviour and their approach towards giftcard solutions.

Growth in the retail industry

Since their introduction in the 70s and their rising popularity in the 90s and 2000s, giftcards have always been a mainstay of the retail industry. They have become a growing trend and will continue to see growth with the introduction of E-giftcards. E-giftcards will boost sales and growth in the retail industry with companies competing for market value using this low-cost incentive.

The giftcard market is likely to gain momentum in the coming years as consumers continue to look at retail value propositions that can save them time, effort and money. The emergence of new technologies will help advance the adoption of giftcards boosting their demand.

With the enormous amount of gift guides out there, it’s difficult to know how much you should spend on the birthday present; especially when you want to ensure the recipient is happy with their gift. Even though the recipient may be a friend or a family, you have to keep in mind that, despite what he/she tells you all the time, your friend is still human and gifts will make them happy.

As simple as birthdays can seem, there are many things to consider. Relationships, immediate vs extended family, whether you know someone well or not and what milestones year are they celebrating (21st or a 50th birthday).
Your budget entirely depends on how much money you’re able to spend and we have put together some suggestions to help with your budget;

Gifts for a small budget

If you are having a tight budget you can choose from options like chocolates, hard cover journals, customised wine glass(es), a nice pair of sunglasses, shoes and customised jewelries.

2. Gifts for a medium budget

A personal blender for smoothies, fragrant candles, a photo book, home décor goods, gift vouchers to their favourite shops or activities, or a subscription can all be purchased with a medium budget.

3. Gifts for a large budget

As a large spender, you have a far wider selection of gift possibilities. You can put together a gift box with their favourite or most-needed products, including a new phone, an iWatch, cash, gift cards, kitchenware, a portable projector, and a lot more.

Not to forget, if you are someone that has very limited time to think and curate all these gift items, there’s something significant that you can equally give; A GIFT CARD!
Gift cards are like an open cheque, you put the power in the hands of the person you are gifting and help them get a very preferred gift that will mean a lot more to them. Gift cards are highly recommended.

Ultimately, the thought behind the gift is what counts. As long as you keep these tips in mind, you can usually find an appropriate gift for any budget. You can still get them something they need, but make it fun as well.

The African way of giving wedding gifts is considered a sign of prosperity and happiness the couple will have in their lives together. This tradition has been nurtured and encouraged by the older members of a family to ensure that the couple’s home is filled with love and prosperity. The traditional gifts are usually made up of household items, clothes, food stuffs, gold, land etc.

In Africa alone, we have over three thousand tribes and each of them have their peculiar customs. Here are five African gifting traditions from different parts of the continent.

Nigeria

In an evolving society like Nigeria the wedding gifts are no longer confined to the traditional gifts like the cattle and vegetables. This means the wedding gift ideas in Nigeria have migrated to a different level altogether today. Unlike many other societies, the most gifts come from the groom and his family during a Nigerian wedding. Usually such gifts come before the actual wedding event. Also, one of the latest trends in Nigeria is gifting cooking accessories to wedding couples. Such items could be blenders, mixers, pressure cookers, and a host of other items. These items are very useful for new families and are neither overly elaborate nor very small. Today it is not uncommon to find wedding couples, their families, and guests coming up with gift items such as gold and silver jewelry, exotic and trendy dresses, or electronic gift items like cell phones and if the couple are from a rich home, they could get cars as well.

Ghana

In a traditional Ghanian wedding, gifts are presented to the bride and her family, including a wedding registry that serves the purpose of a dowry, listing things she needs to begin her new life with. This is a pretty elaborate list and includes gifts for the parents and siblings, but primarily comprises personal effects, household items, and other presents for the bride. These gifts are typically presented at the wedding ceremony in a decorative display.

Egypt

Egyptian culture rules dictate that the man brings his family and two gifts to the woman’s family during the engagement Party. The gifts include the dowry (or mahr) to be paid to the girl’s family and the shabka (a gift for the bride-to-be, made of gold and precious stones). The engagement party is highlighted by the man giving his intended bride the agreed-upon shabka.

For wedding guests, gifts are not given at the wedding party, but usually given to the newlyweds either before or after the ceremony. They can include anything for their new house like a vase or china fruit plate, maybe something as simple as chocolates.

South Africa

The Zulu traditional wedding takes place after the white wedding. During this, the groom and his family bring gifts to the bride’s mother and other close family members. Unlike in many other bridal traditions where the bride and her family are the main recipients from the groom’s side, the Zulus in South Africa do it differently. The bride also shows her appreciation to the groom’s family by presenting groceries and other household items after the wedding ceremony.

Rwanda

In Rwanda, during the traditional wedding ceremony, cows are given to the bride’s family while the bride’s family in return give gourds of milk to the groom’s family. Also, local beer is regarded as a very thoughtful gift. It is given by the groom’s family to the bride’s family and could also be given as a wedding gift to the couple by a guest.

In conclusion, African culture is all about giving only the best gifts, during and after a wedding ceremony. It helps to understand the different elements of a traditional african wedding as you can use this knowledge to give quality gifts. As with all traditions, the practice of giving gifts plays a vital role during a wedding.

If you were to curate a gift for a newly wed couple, what gift would you bring?

From birthdays and anniversaries to graduations and new jobs, there is always a reason to show your gratitude or support by giving a token of appreciation. African culture has its own take on the tradition of gift-giving. In Africa, gifts are not limited only to special occasions such as birthdays or weddings. Africans are known for the elaborate artwork and beautiful details that adorn the artifacts from their respective cultures. As a result, it comes as no surprise that their gift-giving culture is quite elaborate as well.

Giving gifts was not a common practice in Africa. However, as the continent opened up to foreign traders and settlers over the centuries, it gradually came to resemble other parts of the world in its customs. Today, many African countries have adopted the traditions of gift giving, and it has become a key component of relationships in all African societies. Giving gifts in Africa is more than just a small token of appreciation. It is a practice, a way of identity and an element of culture. It could also be a symbol of the warmth and friendship you share with someone, or their willingness to put peoples’ needs above their own.

Africans give gifts at weddings, Thanksgiving Services, Ordination Services, Pastor’s Day, St. Valentine’s Day, Birthdays, Naming Ceremonies, House warmings, Work Anniversary, Graduations, Child Dedication and at times, for no reason at all. As a matter of fact, when young people show respect to adults, it is nothing unusual, if they get wads of cash in return for being good children. Gift giving in African cultures is meant to be an expression of love, respect, and appreciation. It is also thought to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.

There are many different types of gifts that are given in Africa, some of which include a bottle of wine, food, cash, e.t.c. However, the best type of gifts to give in Africa is something that is useful and practical, that is why it’s important to buy a gift that will mean something special to the person receiving it. In the western culture, when you give a gift, there’s a certain expectation of reciprocity. But in African cultures where gifting is an inherent part of the culture, this rule doesn’t apply. The idea behind these gifts is not to have an obligation fulfilled but rather to build and strengthen family bonds, friendships and business ties.

When gifting an African, there is always a fine line to thread; it can either make or break your connection with the recipient. This is one of the reasons why financial presents are always preferable, but what do you do if you know you can’t offer cash based on the personality of the person you’re presenting or if you believe you should provide a more significant and thought-provoking gift? I guess this is when gift cards come into play. You can never go wrong with an open-ended present. When the gift card is used, you give the recipient the opportunity to choose what they truly desire.

The exchange of gifts is a universal practice all over the world, with different cultures having different protocols when it comes to gift-giving. There are many other wonderful cultural elements of African gifting culture that we would explore further in the future, but for now I’d like to leave you with my overall opinion that there is something inherently beautiful and wonderful about gifting culture in Africa; it lies in the thought, the intentionality and expression of love.

Go ahead and show someone some love this week!
