Welcoming Lee Erswell as the new Telos Foundation CEO

The Telos Foundation is evolving and as a part of that, undergoing a leadership transition, with Lee Erswell voted in as the new CEO. This move is in line with the Foundation’s focus on continuous innovation, sustainable growth, and community involvement, as initiated by former CEO Justin Giudici.

During his tenure, Justin effectively navigated industry challenges and shaped the organization’s trajectory and will continue to stay on leading investor relations and core strategy. The leadership handover to Lee Erswell signifies a sustained effort in the next stage of Telos’ evolution, introducing fresh ideas and renewed energy.

Lee Erswell: Background and Vision

Lee Erswell brings a varied background in the blockchain and DeFi sectors to his new role at Telos. His experience includes significant contributions at Swapsicle and a deep understanding of community engagement in the Web3 space. His journey in blockchain spans more than six years, encompassing roles in investment, education, advising, and leadership. This breadth of experience contributes to his collaborative and ethical leadership approach.

Views from Telos Leadership

Justin Giudici: “The last two (plus) years have been an exhilarating ride and the team has always found ways to pull through despite incredibly tough challenges for both Telos and the industry. It’s been a rewarding and yet also a tiring journey — definitely a marathon that requires new blood and change along the way! With that, I’m incredibly excited to hand the CEO baton to Lee who will bring a great new energy to the position. Lee has strong leadership qualities, and incredible energy so I know he will be able to help the network navigate in what will be a significant growth period as we move into a new adoption wave; I’m eager to support Lee and Telos in this new chapter.”

George Vernon: “From collaborating on the launch of Swapsicle on Telos at the beginning of 2023, to working with Lee on forming the future vision of Telos — it was clear to me that he has the leadership, energy and web3 knowledge that is needed to elevate Telos many steps forward so that we start competing and collaborating with the largest names in blockchain and enterprise. Lee joining Telos signifies a new era for Telos and a graduation from the chapter we have been in. To say I’m fired up is an understatement. Let’s go!”

J.T Buice: “It is my privilege to join my esteemed colleagues in welcoming Lee Erswell as our new CEO; it is evident to me that Lee’s arrival marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in our story. Lee’s deep involvement in the ecosystem coupled with his insights as a Telos Guardian have been nothing short of inspiring, fostering confidence in the direction Telos is headed now under his stewardship. As we navigate the intricate landscape of Web3 and embrace the next wave of adoption, Lee’s leadership signifies not just a transition but a transformation — a step into a realm of greater possibilities and achievements for Telos.”

Impact on the Telos Community

The Telos ecosystem is evolving across three foundational pillars: Technology, Utility and User Experience, under the leadership of Lee Erswell. Here’s how these pillars are being strengthened:

Technology:

Developers: Lee is committed to enhancing the technological environment for DApp development, making Telos a more attractive platform for builders. Our goal is to ensure interactions within the ecosystem are secure, efficient, and rewarding. This includes the development of creative financial solutions and a focus on platform efficiency and security.

Stakeholders: The strategic growth plans aim to improve the utility of Telos for stakeholders, ensuring its long-term success and sustainability. This includes a commitment to real token utility and value enhancement.

User Experience:

General Users: The focus is on improving the overall user experience by making every interaction within Telos more rewarding and efficient. This involves providing the necessary tooling, unified user experience, speed, costs and finality to achieve a user experience necessary for onboarding and engaging all levels of user.

Ecosystem: Lee’s leadership aims to create a more vibrant and user-friendly ecosystem. This includes the continued integration of Gaming and NFTs into the Telos ecosystem, fostering an environment that encourages imagination and engagement.

Lee’s Message to Telos Stakeholders:

“Watch this space! I’m thrilled to lead Telos into a future of growth, development, and vibrant community engagement. The journey ahead promises to be nothing short of exciting. In 2024, we have big plans and even bigger ambitions for Telos. Together, we will harness the power of technology, community, and innovation to unlock new possibilities and shape the future of blockchain.

I invite you to join us on this remarkable journey. Whether you’re a longstanding member of the Telos community or exploring the potential of our blockchain for the first time, know that we are committed to excellence, transparency, and continuous progress. The year 2024 is poised to be a transformative one for Telos, and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together.

Thank you for your trust and support. Stay tuned for what’s to come because the future of Telos is brighter than ever!”

Conclusion

As Lee Erswell takes the helm, the Telos Foundation is poised to enter a new era of excellence and innovation. His expertise in the blockchain landscape, combined with a commitment to community and technological advancements, aligns strongly with Telos’ vision.

The Telos Foundation invites the community and stakeholders to be part of our evolution. Passionate about harnessing the power of blockchain to address social injustices, particularly in East Africa, Nathan is currently involved in supporting Kenyan developers through education and hackathons. Outside of his professional pursuits, Nathan is an avid coffee enthusiast, outdoor adventurer, and a social butterfly, always keen on spending quality time with friends.

Work History and Experience:

Can you share a brief overview of your journey as a developer? How did you get started in this field?

I’ve always been interested in computers, from a young age I was my family’s tech support. In junior high, I started to learn more about programming and began to prank my friends with batch files that would freeze their computers. Because of those pranks, I accidentally froze two of the school’s servers and got in a lot of trouble. From there I studied computer science in high school and built games and websites. After high school I did a six month intensive bootcamp in C before going to college and minoring in Computer Science.

How do you stay up-to-date with the latest development trends in Web3?

Mostly through X, following prominent leaders in the space and joining X spaces. I also use youtube occasionally.

Life and Inspirations:

What motivated you to start working in blockchain?

Growing up in East Africa, I saw a lot of injustices and people being taken advantage of. Extortion, loan sharking, and bribing to name a few. I saw the huge potential impact that blockchain could have there. To cut through misuse and corruption and truly help people. This got me very interested in digital identities and the application of banking the unbanked. Having better, clearer ways to transact with transparency and giving people access to a global financial system would truly be revolutionary.

What are your hobbies?

I’m a big coffee nerd. I love spending time making coffee for my friends and trying to impress them with my latte art. I love being outside, hiking, camping, and being active. I have been trying to get back into pottery since I sold my wheel last year, (which was a bummer), but most of the time I just like being social and spending time with my friends.

Current Projects:

Currently, what project or task are you most excited about working on, and why?

I’m super excited to have the opportunity to support builders back in Kenya, which is still a home to me. Being able to spur on blockchain education through hackathons and 1:1 support has been a dream for me. Like I said earlier, blockchain has such transformative power there, and I’m just happy to be a small part of it!

Could you provide insight into the technologies and tools you’re using for your current projects ?

Most of my work is in developer relations, so not currently building any projects, though I hope to in the future. On the tech side I’ve been mainly helping people debug, get Telos configured correctly, and troubleshoot issues they may be having.

Additional Info & Socials:

Where can the community connect with you online?

Telegram: https://t.me/nathanhennigh

Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nathan-hennigh/

About Telos Foundation:

Telos Network was launched in 2018 and is known for its impeccable five-year record of zero downtime. Congratulations to Lee Erswell, Ajinkya Jagtap (voted Vice Chair), Rigi, Max Mochi, and Brian Tse!

CEO Search

The search for a CEO is well underway and our current focus. Shortly after new Guardians were elected, we got to work learning what the community and team value in a CEO. We ran $1700 worth of paid advertising to bring attention to the role, then faced the difficult decision of sorting the many qualified candidates. We’re very close to a decision and have had the opportunity to get to know many impressive people along the way with the skills and experience to help the Foundation achieve its goals. Look out for the next quarterly report where we’ll be welcoming a new member to Team Telos!

Upcoming Elections

There will be 4 Guardian seats up for election coming up in the new year (nominations begin January 5th) so stay tuned for more details and information if you’re interested in joining the Guardians. These activities were organized as follows:

Internal Workshop:

Early in the month, we prepared and conducted an internal workshop with these primary objectives:

a. Present the ZK scaling problem statement.

b. Explain how our protocol addresses this problem.

c. Detail the design of our protocol.

d. Highlight the advantages of our approach compared to other ZK scaling methods.

Incentive Scheme Analysis:
As part of our ongoing research, we delved deeper into the analysis of two distinct incentive schemes. This exploration allowed us to gain a better understanding of how incentives can drive the adoption and success of our protocol.

Integration Strategies:

We also dedicated time to exploring various strategies for integrating our protocol into underlying blockchain networks. This step is crucial in ensuring seamless compatibility with existing systems.

Protocol Robustness Testing:

Our team continued its efforts to challenge and test various aspects of the protocol. This ongoing work is essential for verifying the protocol’s robustness and reliability.

Technical White Paper:

Towards the end of the month, we commenced the process of crafting the foundational content for the most well-established facets of our protocol. This marks the initial step in our journey towards crafting the comprehensive technical white paper, which will serve as an extensive reference document.

A Word From the TCD’s Head of Engineering — Jesse Schulman

For September the team focused on a lot of integration work as well as final issues surrounding the EVM 1.5 release and initial designs for 2.0

Integrations:
The Cloud Wallet is now integrated for both native and EVM, which brings a very web2-like experience for new users to onboard without the common friction of web3. This integration is the first of many, as we now are focused on getting our dApp partners to also integrate the cloud wallet. We hope that many of our existing and new partners will soon add support for the wallet so we can achieve our goal of being the home for blockchain mass adoption!

We also now have the Topper widget integrated, allowing on-ramp into TLOS from traditional payment systems!

EVM:

The team has been working on some challenging issues with the custom nodeos binary which is used for the 1.5 release. This issue, while difficult, is finally understood and a solution is expected soon. While the issue is sorted out, we have focused efforts on further comparison of our EVM against standard Ethereum clients (currently using the reth client from Paradigm). Via this comparison effort, we have identified and resolved a handful of issues with our RPC response behaviour.

The team has also added more features that need to be included in our upcoming EVM contract update. This includes the PUSH0 opcode which is required for the latest solidity compiler, and currently, the focus is on adding EIP-1559 transaction structure support.

We have also built a messaging API which will allow the EVM to send messages to the native network; this will complement the existing ability of native to call EVM functions and allow bi-directional communication between EVM and native networks. With this, we expect to provide reference implementations for projects to use for moving tokens in/out of the EVM in a single transaction without any oracle/bridge risk.

The design for 2.0 is becoming more clear and we are very excited to break ground on the initial implementation of it. It should bring 100% feature parity with the TelosEVM RPC and the leading Ethereum client RPC. Not only will it ensure full compatibility of all EVM tooling, but will also greatly simplify the requirements for node operators who only are interested in the EVM side of Telos. We are looking forward to sharing the details of the design once we have completed the necessary POC and feasibility research.

Telos Integrations —

Gaming

Elixir: Elixir is a PC Game launcher powering the next generation of indie games and players while driving blockchain adoption in the gaming sphere.

XLABEL: Amidst the thunderous roar of wild beasts and the rustle of dense jungle foliage, a new force has emerged… Tarzan: Lord of the Apes™. With a journey that began with HTML, JS, and C#, he eventually co-founded a company post-college. Thomas has since ventured into diverse projects, from handling high-traffic social media sites in France to optimizing e-commerce platforms. His current focus? The dynamic world of blockchain.

Work History and Experience:

Can you share a brief overview of your journey as a developer? How did you get started in this field?

I’ve always been curious and love to figure out how things work, I started playing around with code at 15, mainly HTML, JS and some C#. So it was pretty much a give-in for me to pursue a software engineering degree. During my last internship, I met an entrepreneur with whom we eventually decided to set up our own company right after college.

We would develop websites & tools for clients as well as our own internal projects using the Symfony Framework (PHP) and Javascript and also set up & maintain the underlying infrastructure. With the advent of node and Javascript framework, we also started working on full Javascript front ends such as ReactJS, NextJS and Vue.

What are some of the notable projects you’ve worked on in the past? Could you walk us through one that you’re particularly proud of?

We had one of the top social media based entertainment websites in terms of traffic in France, with a network of categorized Facebook pages that drove a lot of it. That was my first production setup of a fully loaded balanced network architecture, meant to handle the huge spikes we had at peak hour, back when we had way fewer DevOps tools. We hired up to 12 people working on this full-time.

We actually made most of our margin with real estate websites, driving traffic to our A/B tested landing pages and dispatching prospective clients to different big French promoters automatically, as that project didn’t require any staff. This made me familiar with big data and advanced analytics tools as well as things like media buying.

One client project I’m particularly proud of is the e-commerce subscription websites we developed for a medium company with multiple brands that were outgrowing their WordPress/Woocommerce. We chose a barebones framework and developed a solution to perfectly fit their needs that could scale efficiently. With the additional webmarketing services we provided we were able to 10x their website revenue in a year.

How do you stay up-to-date with the latest development trends in Web3?

The space moves so fast that it is a mix of a lot of things. I follow relevant people on Twitter, read press articles, and blogs, read Ethereum proposals & some of their GitHub discussions, as well as hang out in dev channels.

Life and Inspirations:

What motivated you to start working in blockchain?

As I stated earlier, I love to figure out how things work. But I also hate to get bored! Blockchain is a dynamic and innovative ecosystem that provides plenty of opportunities to learn and imagine new things.

What are your hobbies?

My main hobby for the last few months has been renovating my apartment. Otherwise reading, cycling, museums & expositions, hiking, and tv shows.

Current Projects:

Currently, what project or task are you most excited about working on, and why?

My current project I’m excited about is the EVM indexer and API that will let dApp developers query data that would otherwise require them to do their own indexing. Reducing the friction to developer adoption is always something to strive for! It also allows us to create faster frontends, such as our upcoming Telos Wallet and our new and improved version of Teloscan!

Could you provide insight into the technologies and tools you’re using for your current projects?

I use the usual tools of development from Visual Studio to Docker. Currently, one tool that has won me some time is Github Copilot and its awesome code completion feature. Speaking of AI I also often ask ChatGPT questions; it can be much faster to get an answer than using Google but it isn’t always right, you do need the experience so that it does not lead you down rabbit holes.

What strategies do you employ to ensure the codebase you’re working on remains maintainable and scalable in the long run?

Comments, comments, comments and readability. Someone who never touches the code should always be able to figure it out without too many headaches. If refactoring everything to one-liners seems like the goal to some, I don’t think it is always worth it. Your time might be better spent solving another problem.

Closing: As we delve into Thomas’s experiences and insights, it’s clear he embodies the spirit of innovation. From his early days of coding to the complexities of Web3, Thomas’ drive is evident. Whether he’s renovating his apartment or pushing the envelope in blockchain, Thomas’s dedication to growth, innovation and learning shines. To connect further, find him on X at @tomtomcrypto or Telegram as @tomearhart11.

About Telos Foundation:

As a decentralized, independent and not-for-profit organization, the Telos Foundation spearheads the advancement and governance of the Telos blockchain.
