The Impact of Lisk’s EVM Chain on Histopia

The introduction of Lisk’s EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) chain has been transformative for Histopia, allowing us to leverage Solidity for contract deployment and adding new layers of flexibility and scalability. Migrating from JavaScript to Solidity has been a bold move, enabling enhanced interoperability and positioning Histopia to support more complex functionalities, ultimately delivering a richer, more dynamic experience to our users. By aligning our project with Lisk’s expanding blockchain ecosystem, Histopia can continue to grow while tapping into a wider community of developers and users.

With EVM compatibility, Lisk broadens its appeal, facilitating connections to other EVM chains and expanding scalability options. Lisk’s emphasis on user experience, including intuitive tools and robust community support (just like the grant programme that Histopia is a part of) , streamlines the onboarding process and enhances accessibility. These qualities make Lisk a versatile and powerful choice for projects aiming to explore new horizons in decentralized applications, gaming, and the metaverse.

The Fountain of ERA (FoE) on the New Lisk Chain

Our well-known Fountain of ERA (FoE) module is now available on the Lisk testnet, where users can lock their NFTs to participate in the FoE protocol. Inspired by a Proof of Work (PoW) system, FoE is the beating heart of Histopia, distributing ERA tokens as players secure their stakes through Proof of Military (PoM) mechanics. This feature allows players to earn ERA by leveraging their NFTs, contributing to a decentralized and interactive reward system.

To start earning ERA, you’ll need to acquire some tokens from the Histopia faucet. Begin by accessing the faucet feature in the Histopia dashboard, where you can request an initial amount of ERA. This process provides you with the necessary tokens to mint your first NFT and participate in the ecosystem. Once your ERA is deposited, you’ll be ready to create and customize your own Histopian NFT, setting the stage for further engagement in the Fountain of ERA (FoE) and other exciting features within the platform.

Here are the steps to help users get started with earning ERA, minting and customizing NFTs, and participating in the FoE:

Step 1: Getting ERA from the Faucet

1. Access the Faucet –Open the Histopia dashboard and find the faucet section.

2. Request ERA — Click on the faucet button to receive a small amount of ERA tokens to start.

• Tip: You should see a confirmation that the ERA has been added to your balance.

Once you get enough ERA from the faucet to send a transaction, you can mint your first Histopian for free

Step 2: Minting and Customizing Your NFT

1. Mint Your NFT — Click on the Mint New NFT, choose your desired number of NFTs, and complete the minting process. After the transaction is complete you can see the Histopian NFT in your village.

2. Customize Your NFT — After minting, This is your first Histopian on Histopia-Lisk chain. You can customize your characters look.

Step 3: Sending Your NFT to War in the Fountain of ERA (FoE)

1. Open the War Panel — Find the War Panel on your dashboard where you’ll send NFTs to the FoE.
2. Select and Lock Your NFT — Choose the NFT you want to participate in the FoE, and confirm to lock it for earning ERA.

3. Monitor Your ERA Earnings — Once staked, check the dashboard to track your ERA rewards as your NFT engages in the FoE.

New Games in the Histopia Ecosystem

Launching Histopia on the Lisk Testnet

We’re thrilled to announce that Histopia is now live on the Lisk testnet! This milestone is a pivotal step as we prepare to bring our application to the Lisk mainnet. Our testnet launch allows us to optimize functionalities and incorporate user feedback, ensuring a robust platform when we go live on the mainnet​(Histopia-Lisk Planet is…).

Future Plans for the Mainnet Launch

Looking ahead, we’re focused on making our mainnet launch an even more significant event. Once we launch on the mainnet, players will have the opportunity to engage in FoE to earn the ERA token and explore new features of the Histopia metaverse on a larger scale

Lisk planet is now connected to EVM world through Histopia ZKGate, We have been working on a solution to verifiably bridge assets between EVM and Lisk. Zero-knowledge is the key to solving this problem of trust and scalability.

What is the problem?

The issue of trust in a bridge between blockchains is a significant concern when it comes to interoperability and communication between different blockchain networks. A blockchain bridge is a mechanism that enables the transfer of assets or information between two or more separate blockchains. It allows users to move tokens or data from one blockchain to another, expanding the functionality and utility of these networks.

How we solved it first?

Our first attempt was to use a trusted layer(Histopia Indexer) to relay the bridge events to the other chains, although if the trusted relayer acted malignant users would have lost their funds and it could have caused problems in the bridging process.

So we had to choose another approach, and that was when we take a deeper dive into Zero-Knowledge technology and how it can help us to solve this problem.

ZK comes to the rescue

Zero-knowledge technology, specifically zero-knowledge proofs, can play a significant role in addressing trust issues in a blockchain bridge. Zero-knowledge proofs allow one party, the prover, to prove the validity of a statement to another party, the verifier, without revealing any additional information beyond the statement’s validity.

In the context of a blockchain bridge, zero-knowledge proofs can enhance trust by enabling secure and verifiable cross-chain transactions while preserving the privacy and confidentiality of sensitive information.

We used SNARKs(Succinct Non-interactive Argument of Knowledge) and integrated it into the Lisk Blockchain application to be able to verify proofs.

This proof was generated for a bridge between Polygon and Lisk and was used to withdraw tokens on Lisk blockchain. The demo of the bridge can be seen here:

Lisk Bridge Module

This module has two assets:
1. Commitment Phase: This asset will receive the commitment emitted from the EVM side of the bridge, and will insert the commitment into the Merkle tree in LISK blockchain.

Commitment = MiMcSpongeHash(Secret, Nullifier)

2. Withdraw Phase: Using the secret and nullifier generated on the front end, users will make the proof to send to the Withdraw asset and redeem their funds. They can’t change or tamper with any input because any change in the inputs will make the proof unverifiable on Lisk blockchain.

Fountain of ERA(FoE)⚔️

Located in the central land of Histopia, inspired by the Bitcoin PoW system, Fountain of Era is a place where 10 Era tokens are extracted every second, and a coefficient of 0.8 is applied to its rate every three months (The first three months 10 ERA per second, and the second three months 8 ERA per second and so on).

In this fountain, which uses the proof of military (PoM) system, each player can take control of a percentage of this system by entering their NFTs into the FoE contract(Module) and locking them. FoE is the beating heart of Histopia Verse and the ZkGate is the veins of the protocol.

We are thrilled to announce that we’ve integrated Lisk Histopian NFTs into our metaverse. Lisk users can interact with each other, socialize and participate in different mini-games and quests.

FoE UI Flow

After following the steps per our last medium article, users will have ready Histopians to send to war, the steps are now so convenient, they just need to select their Histopians through the War Panel and they’ll be able to send their Histopians to war.

Now You can check your stats in FoE, and loot your ERA from the battle.

In the previous article, we talked about the architecture of Histopia lisk application and NFT module. In this milestone we implemented the FOE module.

A deep dive into FOE module

This module determines how much ERA token each person can earn according to their Histopians military power. This module has 3 assets: “Deposit”, “Withdraw” and “ClaimRewards” (also called harvest).

• Deposit assets: It receives an array of token IDs and checks if these tokens belong to the user that is sending that transaction. Then it calculates the amount of military power deposited NFTs and adds this to user storage. Then it will lock the NFTs to make sure that they can’t be deposited again or transferred.

• Withdraw asset: This asset allows users with locked NFTs to unlock their NFT from the FOE module. Basically, the process is exactly like Deposit but in reverse. It will unlock the NFTs and then deduct their Military power from user storage.
• Harvest asset: Users can claim their rewards by using this asset. The emission rate of ERA will be distributed fairly to all users in proportion to the sum of their locked NFTs in FOE at each moment.

Note: Deposit and withdraw assets will also send the previous rewards of the users to their accounts.

Storage architecture:

In FOE there are multiple variables that can be divided into two sections.

Some of the variables belong to the overall state of the system. On the other hand, there are some variables that are storing data for each user separately.

So we introduced two new data types: FOESystemState and FOEAccountsState. You can check the schema on our GitHub repo.

Discord Shield🛡️

Histopia Discord Shield is a feature in Histopia that allows users to connect their Histopia account to their Discord account. By doing so, users can receive a role in Histopia Discord server that indicates their Histopia Level.

To use this feature, users need to first link their Histopia and Discord accounts. This can be done by logging into Histopia, navigating to the settings page, and selecting the Discord Shield option. From there, users will be prompted to authorize Histopia to access their Discord account and connect the two accounts.

Further Development

ZkGate🔐

Histopia is one of the first GameFi protocols that try to let users have a Multi-chain experience in a trustless way.

ZkGate is our ZK-powered bridge that is a zero-knowledge based bridge that enables users to bridge ERA tokens and Histopian NFTs between different planets(blockchains). So far we have designed it to work only with EVM planets but soon it’ll be a standalone service between EVM and Lisk blockchain.

ZKGate uses zero-knowledge proofs, a cryptographic technique that enables a user to prove the validity of a statement without revealing any additional information. This allows users to transfer their tokens and NFTs across different planets(blockchains) without the risk of trusting our relayer nodes.

FoE & ZkGate🔐🛡️

ZkGate will provide a unique opportunity for users to arbitrage the military power difference cross-planets and use their Histopians to yield more ERA on another planet.

They’ll be able to do it in multiple ways, but the two recommended way is:

1. Bridge their ERA from one planet to another planet using ZkGate and receive ERA to mint new Histopians. Now, they can send their Histopians to FoE and earn their share of FoE protocol.
2. They can bridge their Histopians from their origin planet to another planet using ZkGate. With some interstellar mutation, they could possibly get a stronger( or a weaker) Histopian and use them to fight in FoE.

In this article, we will talk about the Histopia Lisk application and deep dive into it to see how it is look like under the hood.

What is Histopia-lisk application

Histopia is a complex multi-chain system which is comprised of multiple components. Each component play an crucial role to increase the stability and security of the system and also improve the user experience.

Histopia-lisk application is a blockchain application created using Lisk SDK. At the moment it is a standalone testnet blockchain but we are planning to connect it to Lisk chain as a side chain to tackle the scalability issues.

Histopia-lisk application under the hood

There are multiple modules that have been used in Histopia-lisk application.

• NFT module: Manages the ownership of non-fungible assets in Histopia (Characters, lands, …). We’ve implemented the NFT module as this LIP describes with small modifications to fit our use-case.
• FoE module: responsible for executing Proof of military mechanism. [Will be implemented in 2nd milestone]
• Gate module: This module handles the Histopian teleport and ERA transfer between other chains and Histopia-Lisk app.[Will be implemented in 3rd milestone]
• Lisk planet module: responsible for interactions with lisk planet (resources and mini-games) and also micro-transactions between users

Also we’ve used multiple plugins to enhance user and developer experience (HTTPAPIPlugin, DashboardPlugin, FaucetPlugin)

NFT module specification:

NFTs are really well known entities in blockchain space. In lisk blockchain application we implemented the NFTs based on this LIP. In this module users are able to create, transfer and destroy their nft assets.

In Histopia NFT module, each NFT has some properties which will be calculated randomly at the mint time. These properties are defined based on the type of that NFT.

We can define different types and for each type we specify what are the properties and what is the range of these properties. For example this is the stored data for the type of Histopian.

This can be used as a blueprint to create a new Histopian NFT.

At the mint time, random numbers between the minimum and maximum for that property will be assigned to the NFT properties.

So the NFT properties structure will be like this example.

Assets:

We use assets to define different interactions with the NFT module

1. AddType: This transaction will create a new type and will add it to the state store. Only the owner address (which is stored in System Data) can call this function.
2. Create: Users can call this asset and create new NFTs. Users need to specify the number and type of the desired NFT. This asset will deduct the mint fee from their account and will mint a new NFT and calculate its properties based on the type blueprint.
3. Transfer: Users can use this asset to transfer the ownership of their token to another address.
4. Destroy: Users can use this asset to burn (destroy) their token. By doing so, the NFT data will be removed from StateStore.

Final notes about our experience with Lisk SDK

Building with Lisk SDK is pretty straightforward (specially with the tutorials in lisk documentation) but I think we are still missing open source examples and code snippets that are a great source of learning for developers who are trying to learn a new paradigm. I really liked the layered structure of applications created by lisk SDK.

Another problem that we faced during the development was errors without proper and complete explanation; for example at some point when I wanted to add something to the userAccount storage I got “must be greater than 3” or “must not be zero” errors and there was no explanation about which field has this problem.
Also I think it makes sense that we get access to “channel” in assets (I don’t know if the lisk devs have thought about this or not. it’s just a recommendation) since I needed to send events when I was in the middle of handling a transaction not when it’s finished.

The frontend and user interface

In the current version of the frontend of Histopia, users can create new NFTs and customize the Histopian NFTs as they wish.

To start using the Histopia Lisk chain, users need to create or import an account into the internal wallet of Histopia.

User credentials (passphrase) are end-to-end encrypted and stored on local storage (on the user’s computer, not the backend)

After that, get some Faucet to be able to execute the mint transaction.

Once you get enough ERA from the faucet to send a transaction, you can mint your first Histopian for free by doing social tasks.

By doing so, the frontend will create a transaction and sign it using the passphrase of the selected account and send it to the Histopia lisk application.

After the transaction is complete you can see the Histopian NFT in your village.

This is your first Histopian on Histopia-Lisk chain. You can customize your characters look.

Development roadmap

We are planning to bring lots of cool features to Histopia lisk application in three steps as described below. We have already completed the first step.

Three in-between goals of milestone 3 of Histopia-lisk grant program:

1. First and the most important, we are finalizing the NFT module of the application and connecting it to Histopia Village Dashboard so users will be able to mint and customize their Histopian. In addition, we have developed our first Histopia Lisk internal wallet, which makes it easier for our users to use Histopia dashboard.

2. Next step is about the Fountain of ERA (FoE) module and the metaverse integration.

FoE protocol is one of the key components of Histopia, which will allow users to earn ERA by participating in proof of military (PoM) mechanism. Also after this step, users can participate in Histopia testnet campaign to compete with other chains and earn up to 5000$ worth of ERA token.

We will also connect Histopian characters to Histopia Metaverse. Thus, users with Histopian NFTs can traverse Histopian world, socialize with other communities, and play minigames.

3. In the third step we are planning to work on Lisk planet (3D traversable world) with new unique customization for Histopians of Lisk planet.

In this step we also aim to make the Histopia-lisk application compatible with Histopia Gate.
Histopia Gate is our in-door bridging system that allows users to teleport their Histopians (nfts) and also their ERA token to/from different chains.

In addition, We will design and implement a unique page for each Histopians so they can share their NFT profile to everyone easily and also list their Histopians for sale.

We are happy to announce Histopia testnet launch campaign. This testnet campaign will continue till our IDO launch. This campaign will be on 7 chains testnet( Ethereum, PolyGon, Binance Smart Chain, Aurora, Emerald Paratime on Oasis, Sapphire Paratime on Oasis, Boba). The 5000$ ERA reward that you earn in the testnet phase will be airdroped to your mainnet account based on how much of the distributed $ERA of Fountain of ERA(FoE) you won. You can also bridge your $ERA tokens to other chains which will be announced a week after the testnet campaign started.

Distribution Formula

More than 3 Million $ERA token will be distributed through the Fountain of ERA protocol on testnet campaign. Every second the FoE will unlock 1 ERA and base on your military power of your Histopian NFT(s) you can loot ERA.

Every week the distribution rate of era will decrease by 20 percent, so the sooner you join the fight the more you will earn.

Mint Histopian

You can mint your first Histopian NFT for free and you will get your special Histopian, but if you want more Histopians, to have more military power you need to earn ERA by sending your first NFT to FoE, and pay 2500 ERA to mint another Histopian.

Each planet is represented by a blockchain, also there is a faucet that you can use on each chain so don’t worry if it’s your first time on that chain. You can choose between our six chain partners. You can also bridge your earned ERA token between each chain through our bridge protocol.

Histopia and the Blockchain

The future of gaming is digital assets replacing traditional items. Histopia wants to give its players true ownership inside an open economy, and its goal is to do this through the power of blockchain.

The blockchain-powered economy model is an ingrained part of Histopia. The game is first and foremost a resource management game. Every resource players use or trade is linked to a smart contract. The virtual open world allows players to create their little universes, interacting with similar-minded people along the way.

While the word “blockchain” may be a deterrent to many new players, Histopia offers seamlessly merged features, making it so that no prior knowledge of crypto is necessary.

Histopia already supported multiple EVM chains in Decentralized application architecture. But we are now thrilled to announce that after careful investigation we felt the need for blockchain application architecture in our platform, after reviewing a few blockchains that give us the feasibility to launch a planet on a chain that is fully customized for the needs of users, we decided to work on Lisk.

Lisk, an opportunity to further expand Histopia

We envision Histopia as a virtual world that embodies these characteristics: Security-preserving, privacy-preserving, and scalable from the infrastructure, content, and game logic perspective.

After months of research, we found Lisk the optimal option as the running engine of Histopia.
Lisk is an open-source blockchain application platform that allows us to increase the scalability of Histopia to a new level, provide privacy-preserving in a way that they haven’t experienced before, and maximize the security of their assets. Because of its flexible nature, we are able to bring new concepts to our game that was impossible before such as on-chain user-created content and mini-games. We are planning to create the Hitsopia side-chain through the Lisk grant program and implement all of the game assets and logic on this side-chain using Lisk SDK. Lisk SDK is basically a toolbox for developers to create customized blockchain applications compatible with Lisk blockchain.

Lisk will give us the opportunity to make ERA the native token of Lisk Planet.

Multi-Chain Planets and Lands

The basis of Histopia is its planets and land. Players can choose various lands from countless planets. These lands contain resources, that serve as an opening for city-building and resource management.

Histopia lands are exclusive and completely autonomous NFTs, ruled by their owner, called a ruler, using governance tools. These lands come in various sizes and contain different resources assigned during the minting time.

When you buy your first Histopian land, you will become its owner with a smart contract to prove it. Your goal is to grow the city into an empire, make your citizens happy, grow your treasuries and declare war on anyone threatening your lands.

In Histopia you are king! Leading your empire is no small task and management is critical if you want to become a legend. Expand and help your neighbors do the same. Fight against other planets for domination of the coveted Fountain of ERA.

Resource Management and City Building

A ruler can harvest the resources from his land. This is the basic premise of Histopia. Harvesting, also known as minting, will help you grow your kingdom. There are two types of resources called Nutri and Natura. Nutri is the food that keeps your citizens going, while Natura is the raw materials used when building things.

All of the resources minted on your islands are ERC1155 assets, allowing you to exercise full control over their harvesting and trade. This plays a major role in Histopia where 99% of the land, buildings, citizens, and items are on-chain.

Use these resources to create powerful buildings that help your city grow, or just trade them with other players and receive a lump sum of money. It’s your choice.

Trading in the Marketplace

The Marketplace, also known as The Bazaar, is a unique trading system that supports multiple trading options for players. Here, you can trade your assets with other players directly on the Histopia Deal Maker Smart Contract or sell and buy tokens from the Histopia Decentralized Exchange

If you rule an island, you can initiate long-term contracts for a variety of resources. Rulers can pre-purchase or pre-sell items and not have to worry about price changes that might affect the Bazaar.

The marketplace is a core feature of the game. We see free trade as an integral part of the game; there’s no way around that. Players should be in control of their in-game assets, and we stand by this statement. We do want to exercise full central control over virtual goods. Players spending their time harvesting these should see the biggest cut from every trade.

Meet the Histopians

Histopians are the law-abiding citizens of your kingdoms. These characters come to life in various parts of the game. Some are gifted farmers dedicated to feeding your people, others are engineers building the foundations of your city. Whatever the case may be, they are the backbone of your empire.

Currently, there are four kinds of Histopians:

• The Anex
• The Bellators
• The Decanus
• The Artifex

Their job is to keep everything going while you create a strong kingdom. One interesting feature of Histopians is breeding. This allows you to create unique citizens tailored to your needs. If a citizen does not suit your needs, he can be traded off to another kingdom — no citizen is useless in Histopia!

Fountain of ERA

The Fountain of Era is located at the center of Histopia. It is an endless pursuit for domination, as the ERA only belongs to those courageous Histopians who are willing to protect it. The FoE is the first PoM(proof of military) consensus mechanism. Send your warriors to fight for its control and be rewarded for their valor.

The Fountain mechanism works similarly to Bitcoins’ Proof-of-Work System.

Players can send in armies of Bellators to protect the fountain and earn 10 ERA per block. This prize pool will slowly diminish over time.

This feature will be the center of many epic battles and players should be quick to send Bellators to protect it!

Chatting and Socializing

One of the core features of Histopia is socializing. We want players to create memories inside the game. A king and a queen need allies and neighbors to chat with — this is a multiplayer game after all!

While global chatting exists, there’s also the addition of proximity voice and text chatting which will make for more private and personal conversation between players. Discuss your plans, find out how other players are growing their empires, or simply sit and have a lovely chat with someone.

Our ultimate goal with Histopia is to create a Decentralized Autonomous Organization. We want our players to take the front seat when it comes to growing and developing the game. Sometimes developers may lose sight of what’s important right now in exchange for something more long-term.
