            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>A gentle exploration of the subtle impulses that interrupt goodness, shaping what we allow in love, support, and success, and how to stay present long enough to thrive instead of just survive.</em></p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/590/1*_-vhyoLb4BIa7RN06VJAAw@2x.jpeg" /></figure><p>Usually, for a brief moment, something happens inside.</p><p>Maybe the chest opens a little.</p><p>The breath deepens.</p><p>There’s a quiet, imperceptible “ah,” or sigh of relief.</p><p>And then..almost immediately , something else happens.</p><p>An impulse of some kind:</p><p>To give it back.</p><p>To compliment.</p><p>To respond.</p><p>An impulse to shift the moment forward.</p><p>For a moment, your body is simply taking something in.</p><p>And then…something begins to organize around it.</p><p><strong>Learning Your Own Interruption Pattern</strong></p><p>Everyone’s system interrupts goodness in its own way.</p><p>For some people, it looks like:</p><p>•	Changing the subject</p><p>•	Giving a compliment back</p><p>•	Making a joke</p><p>•	Becoming helpful</p><p>•	Asking a question</p><p>•	Or subtly shifting into “being on”</p><p>For others, it’s a quiet:</p><p>• Constriction in the body</p><p>•	Pulling together inside</p><p>•	Feeling of “okay, now what?”</p><p>•	Urgency to move on</p><p>None of these are wrong.</p><p>They’re just familiar patterns that have kept us “safe.”</p><p>At this point, might start to wonder to yourself:</p><p>•	What do I usually do the moment something warm arrives?</p><p>•	Do I tend to give something back right away?</p><p>•	Do I move into words, action, or engagement?</p><p>•	Or do I subtly leave the moment before it finishes landing?</p><p><em>Side note: this kind of noticing about your own noticing — what psychologists call </em><strong><em>metacognition</em></strong><em> — is actually one of the strongest predictors of emotional flexibility and regulation. Research links greater metacognitive awareness with the ability to monitor and shift emotional responses in real time, which is exactly what this work is inviting you to explore.</em></p><p>Good work- you’re being curious and getting to know your own rhythm!</p><p><strong>The Tiny Gap Where Choice Lives</strong></p><p>From the body’s point of view, the sequence is simple:</p><p>1.	Something nourishing arrives.</p><p>2.	Your system opens to it — for a moment.</p><p>3.	A familiar impulse appears.</p><p>4.	And the initial goodness gets thwarted or inhibited.</p><p>That impulse and inhibition isn’t a problem.</p><p>It’s an old, intelligent movement with information.</p><p>(This is also the same pattern I see quietly limit people’s capacity to receive in other areas of their lives including the potential for closeness in relationships, how much support and ease the day brings, and even how much money, opportunity, or success they experience.)</p><p>So here’s the work: right between step 2 and step 3, there is a very small, very interesting space.</p><p>A gap.</p><p>And inside that gap is something new…</p><p>The possibility of staying, and stretching out our capacity to let it in even just a little bit more. For a second longer than you’re used to. And I know what some of you are thinking- wouldn’t that be selfish? And yet- most often inhibiting receptivity can take from both the giver and the recipient.</p><p>Wild right?</p><p><strong>A Gentle Experiment</strong></p><p>The next time someone offers you something warm…</p><p>Let’s say, they offer a kind word.</p><p>A look.</p><p>A moment of presence.</p><p>Notice your trust issues that arise but even before that, notice even just the slightest second that you have capacity to receive it.</p><p>See if you can notice:</p><p>1. The moment you receive it (is there a softening even if just for a moment)</p><p>2. The impulse that follows</p><p>Then try this:</p><p>No need to suppress the impulse.</p><p>Just wait one breath.</p><p>Feel:</p><p>•	Your back</p><p>•	Your seat</p><p>•	Your legs</p><p>Let the experience move in you just a little longer before you move.</p><p>Lean a little closer, there may even be a slight discomfort trying something new like this.</p><p>Then respond however you want.</p><p>You might notice:</p><p>•	Sensation</p><p>•	More emotion</p><p>•	More softness</p><p>•	Or more discomfort</p><p>All of that is information.             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Explore why we interrupt receiving, how the nervous system learned these automatic responses, and how to gently stay present long enough for new possibilities to land.</em></p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/590/1*rbD0pB0z_eUxpHz0whMkIg@2x.jpeg" /></figure><p>If you read The Subtle Impulses That Interrupt Receiving, you already know that many of us struggle to allow goodness to be fully received on a physiological level. We struggle because something in us learned to move, to respond, or to organize the moment very quickly.</p><p>At one point, the impulse to thwart goodness from fully landing in us were very useful.</p><p>From a developmental psychology perspective, human nervous systems are shaped in relationships with others. As infants, we rely on other nervous systems for regulation and safety. We learn what is allowed, what is risky, what is best for our survival through our early experiences of connection.</p><p>Gabor Maté often speaks about this in terms of adaptation and explains a child does not ask, “How do I stay authentic?” The child asks, “How do I stay connected?” Which then develops personality traits for the young one to survive.</p><p>The nervous system learn what keeps closeness available, what keeps emotional temperature stable, and what reduces the chance of rejection, withdrawal, or overwhelm.</p><p>For some people, that learning looks like becoming very attuned. Very responsive. Very quick to give something back. Very good at not lingering too long in need or openness.</p><p>And this learning lives in the body.</p><p>When “x” happens, I respond with “____” response to keep myself “and others” safe.</p><p>But this is a perception of safety.</p><p>It lives in the moment someone helps you and something inside says, “Do not be a burden.”</p><p>It lives in the moment someone gets close and something inside says, “Stay easy. Stay useful. Stay on.”</p><p>Or maybe it sounds like:</p><p>“This is nice, but do not get used to it.”</p><p>“Keep this moving.”</p><p>“Do not want too much.”</p><p>“Make sure you are giving too.”</p><p>None of this means anything is wrong with you.</p><p>It means your nervous system learned how to survive and belong in the relational world it was given.</p><p>In many families, warmth was not something you simply rested inside. Sometimes it was inconsistent. Sometimes it came with expectations. Sometimes it disappeared quickly. Sometimes it required emotional maturity, helpfulness, or sensitivity from a very young age. And let’s be honest- none of our parents were perfect at this.</p><p>So the body learns a rhythm to survive. And we want to celebrate this.</p><p>The pattern may look like:</p><p>Open a little.</p><p>Then re-engage.</p><p>Then manage the moment.</p><p>Then keep things okay.</p><p>It’s very easy to begin to see this as our personality or say things like, “I’ve always been like this.” But remember: it is not a character flaw. It is a developmental strategy.</p><p>Developmental psychology shows us again and again that the cost of not organizing ourselves according to our environments is too high. <em>So the organism chooses connection over full authenticity.</em> Every time.</p><p>As Gabor Maté puts it : the trauma is not what happened to you. The trauma is what happened inside you as a result. The adaptations you made were not mistakes. They were solutions.</p><p>The only reason they become limiting later in life is because the environment has changed, but the nervous system has not yet gotten the update.</p><p>What once helped you stay connected might now limit how much closeness, support, ease, or abundance you can receive.</p><p>Not because you do not want those things.</p><p>But because your body still believes that staying little ahead of the moment is what keeps you safe.</p><p><em>This is why insight alone is rarely enough</em>.</p><p>The patterns are reflexes. They are timing. They are physiology. And they can be observed.</p><p>This Somatic Experiencing becomes such a powerful approach to shifting the groove and paving a healthier way.</p><p>Somatic Experiencing is not about analyzing the story or fixing the behavior. It is about learning through experience, gently creating safety to open doors to new ways of being.             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>What watching my parent get stomach surgery taught me about the stomach and its ability to help regulate the body and mind.</em></p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*9sq-5k0V4I6mDJBKmsqBiA.jpeg" /></figure><p>From a young age, I felt the weight of anxiety within my family. My parents, navigating personal struggles like childhood trauma, abandonment wounds, financial instability, and the search for belonging, raised me and my two siblings amidst global challenges. Despite these hardships, they did an incredible job finding meaning in their lives.</p><p>Through these experiences, both as a child and into adulthood, I recognized the urgent need for self-regulation in my own life. I had to find a way to create safety amidst stress, to anchor myself in something constant and eternal. What is eternal is the deep intelligence of the body and the timeless wisdom it holds — its capacity to return to balance when we tune in and listen.</p><p>In 2016, when one of my parents underwent stomach surgery, my awareness was drawn to the “gut brain” — a powerful mirror of our mental environment. This realization led me to explore how we can better regulate ourselves, starting with the body. Here’s what I discovered:</p><p><strong>3 Tummy Tips for Better Regulation:</strong></p><ol><li><strong>Food as Medicine:</strong> What we eat nourishes <em>not just the body but also the mind.</em> When feeling ungrounded, we often reach for light, processed foods like popcorn or chips. While they offer temporary relief, they don’t support long-term grounding. Instead, I’ve found that foods like root vegetables and high-protein options can help create a sense of stability. For sluggishness, lighter, energy-boosting foods can lift my spirits.</li><li><strong>How We Eat Matters:</strong> It’s not just <em>what</em> we eat, but <em>how we eat it.</em> Over time, I’ve noticed that paying attention to the way I eat gives me more control over how I feel. So, next time you sit down for a meal, ask yourself: what emotional state do I want to create during and after this meal?</li><li><strong>Body Signals as Guidance:</strong> Discomforts like stomach aches are signals — the body’s way of calling us back to balance. When the mind races ahead of the body, redirecting the attention to physical sensations in the body can help restore balance abd a realistic connection with natures own clock.</li></ol><p>Leaning into the sensations of my body has taught me to embrace the natural timing of life, aligning with my body’s intelligent clock. This shift in perspective has transformed the way I see the world and how the world interacts with me.</p><p>Through these practices, I’ve learned that I can always create a sense of anchored safety by staying connected to this awareness.</p><p>How can you attune to your stomach this week and respond to its requests? The Resonant Field:</h3><p>Have you ever noticed coincidences that just seem too connected to be accidents? Each practice recognizes that stress and trauma are stored not only in the mind but in the body as well, often showing up as physical tension, posture shifts, and even chronic pain. Both SE and Reiki aim to help the body release these energy blocks, creating a more balanced and relaxed state. While these practices share similar goals, they have distinct approaches — and unique outcomes — that set them apart.</p><h3>Shared Goals: Restoring Energy Flow and Easing Physical and Emotional Tension</h3><p>By supporting the body in moving past blockages that restrict natural energy flow, these two modalities understand that the cumulative effects of stress and trauma can disrupt balance. While emotional tensioncreates physical tension and vice versa, Reiki and SE both work to ease these disruptions and restore a sense of peace and flow.</p><p>Somatic Experiencing (SE) approaches energy release by helping clients tune into their physical sensations and directly address how stored tension affects the nervous system. The client is conscious 100% of the time, and engaged in an experiential way to develop connections to their intuitive muscles or “inner compass.” By engaging with a clients intero-ception, we gain access to more choices and therefore help pave new neuropathways to healing.</p><p>Reiki, on the other hand, involves a more passive experience, with the practitioner directing healing energy toward areas in need. The practitioner may lay their hands gently on or just above the client’s body to track and guide energy flow, helping identify areas where energy may be blocked or unbalanced. In either case, these practices encourage the body to release tension and restore ease in ways that reflect their unique strengths.</p><h3><strong>Goals of Somatic Experiencing</strong></h3><p>Somatic Experiencing works specifically with the body’s nervous system to release the effects of trauma and stress. Through SE, clients are guided to explore their physical sensations, emotions, and responses that happen in day-to-day life and create a charge in the body causing tension, discomfort, and incongruence with reality. SE is based on the understanding that trauma is often stored in the body as unprocessed survival energy, and its goal is to help clients safely complete incomplete patterns that were stored at the point of trauma. Increasing client resilience.</p><h3>Goals of Reiki</h3><p>Reiki, by contrast, centers on channeling universal energy to support the body’s natural healing. During a Reiki session, the practitioner places their hands on or just above the client’s body, channeling energy toward areas in need of support. Here, the client’s role is simply to relax and receive, allowing the practitioner to guide energy where it’s needed most. Reiki’s goal is to create a deep sense of relaxation, giving the body a peaceful state in which healing can naturally unfold.</p><h3>Why Do I Choose Somatic Experiencing Over Reiki as a Practitioner of Both?</h3><p>One of the main differences between Somatic Experiencing and Reiki lies in the role of client engagement, and this is also why I favor Somatic Experiencing as a practitioner of both. In SE, clients are actively involved in their healing. This active engagement empowers clients to connect deeply with their bodies and build practical tools for handling stress and trauma on their own over time. Such momentary lapses in memory are a common part of the human experience.</p><p><strong><em>Now imagine being told that these harmless forgetful moments are symptomatic of a deeper problem – a problem that requires medication and a diagnosis that could stick with you for life…</em></strong></p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*JCTm4kGh5gd2lUXOMWCiew.jpeg" /></figure><p>In his pretty clear admission from within the psychiatric profession itself, Dr. Paul Minot, a psychiatrist with nearly four decades of experience, voiced his doubts about Traditional psychiatric practices. “I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m participating in the biggest intellectual scam of this era…” He says as he continues to explain the billions of dollars spent each year in an industry “built on a<strong> corrupt body of pseudoscience, cultivated and exploited by monied interests for decades</strong>.”</p><p>Such a drastic leap might sound extreme, yet, when you look at some aspects of psychiatry, this approach becomes a concerning reality.</p><p>Between the widespread use of stigmatizing labels, and an excessive dependence on the medical model, the traditional practice of psychiatry often overlooks holistic, person-centered approaches that prioritize the patient’s overall well-being and the truth of who they are.</p><h3>Four Limits of Traditional Medicine and Psychiatry:</h3><h3><strong>1. Stigmas</strong>:</h3><p>First and foremost: stigmas. The use of diagnostic labeling in psychiatry can dramatically shape an individual’s self-perception, as well as society’s perception of them. Consider our hypothetical individual who has a moment of forgetfulness. <strong>If they begin to view themselves as inherently flawed or deficient, this new self-perception can significantly affect their overall sense of self-worth and their interactions with others.</strong></p><p>Stigmas have the potential to change someone’s life trajectory and reality forever, and is of <em>paramount</em> importance that we address and dismantle these stigmas within the field of psychiatry and beyond, to ensure the mental well-being of individuals is prioritized without compromising their identity, dignity, and societal equality.</p><h3>2. Dependence on the medical model:</h3><p>Over-reliance on the medical model, relates to the tendency within psychiatry to view mental health conditions predominantly through a <em>biological lens</em>. In doing so,<em> the individual’s social, cultural, and personal circumstances can often be overlooked.</em> It’s as if the person forgetting why they walked into a room is given a pill, rather than a reminder to slow down, use deep breathing as a valuable tool for the nervous system, or get a good night’s sleep.</p><h3>3. Over-Medicalization:</h3><p>While human emotions like sadness or anxiety are quite normal, they can often be pathologized and treated as disorders. This practice can create a culture that buys into the idea that ordinary feelings are inherently wrong or abnormal, which keeps the power in the medicine instead of in human potential. If you remember the example at the beginning of this article, it is the difference between a lifelong unnecessary treatment plan, and an empowering conversation that validates these feelings as part of the shared human experience, opening the door to effective coping mechanisms and healthier mental health practices.</p><h3>4. Known and Unknown Side Effects of Medication:</h3><p>Next, the known and unknown side effects of medication. Pharmaceuticals can be a vital part of treatment for many, but they are not without their potential hazards. Surprisingly, the long-held belief that depression stems from a serotonin deficiency was challenged by a study in the Molecular Psychiatry journal. The findings included no difference in serotonin levels between individuals diagnosed with depression and healthy individuals! Not to mention selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), frequently prescribed for depression and anxiety, can result in insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and even increased suicidal thoughts in some individuals. For more information read <a href="https://medium.com/@hpsomatics/mental-health-myths-9a035390568b">Mental Health Myths.</a></p><p>These discoveries must urge us to consider alternative, more natural ways to boost serotonin and promote mental wellbeing.</p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/200/1*KYHw8Yr1RvIzl56hLOsmlA@2x.jpeg" /></figure><h3><strong>Paving the Way to Alternative Treatments:</strong></h3><p>I still vividly recall my initial visit with my new primary care doctor after moving to California. The intended “go-to” place for regular checkups and routine health visits left me with a lot of curiosities and questions regarding the intentions of healthcare.</p><p>After confirming healthy vitals and completing other tests, the doctor asked if I had any other concerns. I expressed my struggle with frequent stomach aches.</p><p>“Do they occur when you’re stressed?” she asked.</p><p>When I confirmed, her response was simply, “Okay, hope you feel better.” Puzzled, I asked if she had any resources that could assist me, to which she hesitated and then suggested, “I think we might have something about mindfulness in the lobby?”</p><p>This exchange highlighted a much broader issue. The glaring absence of treatment suggestions and lack of readily available resources in what should be a comprehensive healthcare setting. This experience speaks to a broader concern within the realm of psychiatry, and healthcare in general–shouldnt our physicians be coherently treating the mind and body as one? Instead of being viewed as complementary to traditional medical approaches, these strategies are often sidelined, despite their potential to offer effective relief for many patients.</p><h3>In Conclusion</h3><p>While psychiatry plays a crucial role in helping many people manage their mental health, it’s important to critically examine and address the prevalent issues within the field. We must encourage both psychiatry and the broader healthcare system to see and treat patients as whole beings rather than isolated symptoms or diagnoses.</p><p>As our collective responsibility, it’s crucial to recognize the interconnection of the mind and body, and to integrate treatments that foster this understanding into our healthcare practices. However, the aftermath of COVID-19 has illuminated and emphasized more ‘feminine’ qualities into our lives.</p><blockquote>From our homes to our workplaces, influencing our business ventures and beyond, we have seen drastic shifts towards more balance.</blockquote><p>In this significant slowdown over the past few years of COVId, feminine qualities seem to be more heavily integrated. A once dominant pace society focused on efficiency has turned a leaf into a newfound appreciation for balance and harmony. This shift in the post-Covid world has allowed us to embrace feminine qualities such as empathy, collaboration, and nurturing in both our personal and professional domains.</p><p>As we increasingly value elements such as “soft skills”, positive “company culture”, and “mental health days”, it’s clear we are beginning to appreciate the power of the phrase “slowing down to speed up”. This aim towards embracing a more balanced approaches is apparent across the corporate world, families, the education system, and interpersonal relationships.</p><p>In observing these transformative times, I’ve identified S<strong>even “Arrows” that indicate a shift towards balance between the masculine and feminine.</strong></p><h3>The Seven Arrows in our Changing World:</h3><h3>➡️From Command to Collaboration:</h3><p>This arrow signifies a transition from top-down hierarchy to a more collaborative, team-focused model.</p><h3>➡️From Competition to Cooperation:</h3><p>This arrow highlights a shift from a win-lose mentality to a focus on cooperation and shared success.</p><h3>➡️From Aggression to Assertiveness:</h3><p>This arrow symbolizes a move from aggressive behavior towards assertive communication, encouraging respect and understanding.</p><h3>➡️From “Me” to “We”:</h3><p>This arrow emphasizes a move from individualistic pursuits towards recognizing our collective interconnectedness.</p><h3>➡️ From Linear Thinking to Holistic Thinking:</h3><p>This arrow represents a shift from a single-minded, linear perspective to a more comprehensive, holistic view.</p><h3>➡️From Short-term Gain to Long-term Sustainability:</h3><p>This arrow points out a transition from prioritizing immediate profit to focusing on long-term sustainability and stakeholder well-being.</p><h3>➡️From Exclusivity to Inclusivity:</h3><p>The final arrow indicates a shift from exclusive practices towards promoting diversity and inclusion.</p><p>The aim of these seven arrows is not to suggest that ‘feminine’ traits are superior to ‘masculine’, or vice versa, but rather to highlight the benefits of a balanced approach.             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Explore the limitations of singular professional perspectives and discover how bridging gaps between fields can lead to more informed and holistic decisions in healthcare, law enforcement, education, and beyond.</em></p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/414/1*U8m6DljuIafZ6RPTm2tr3w@2x.jpeg" /></figure><p>As you look at this image, do you see a camera lens or an eye ball?</p><p>Just as the camera lens is not merely a lens, but a gateway to a multitude of functions and hidden capabilities, so too is the human body and all of its parts.</p><p>And, much like the accurate reflection of the lens in this photo, we, too, can aspire to mirror the being in front of us, whether it’s the student we strive to educate or the individual under scrutiny in a legal context.</p><p>Just as the camera lens captures intricate details and nuances, we must also aim to perceive and understand the complexities of the human experience which calls for a holistic approach, transcending the surface to fathom the depths of each unique individual, their needs, aspirations, and challenges. This reflection is not merely about what we see on the surface but delving deeper into the layers that make up the whole person, whether it’s in the pursuit of education or the quest for justice.</p><h4>Table of Contents</h4><p><a href="#e3ce"><em>Widening the Professional Lens</em></a></p><p><a href="#aa71"><em>Law Enforcement</em></a></p><p><a href="#fa99"><em>Medicine</em></a></p><p><a href="#4f96"><em>Education</em></a></p><p><a href="#71f8"><em>A Source of Opportunity</em></a></p><h3>Widening the Professional Lens</h3><p>There’s an old saying, “If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” This idiom speaks volumes about the way we approach problem-solving, particularly in professional spheres where specialized training often takes precedence over a holistic perspective. When professionals are primarily trained in a singular method or approach, they may only know how to diagnose or address issues based on their training, thereby limiting their scope and effectiveness.</p><h3>In Law Enforcement:</h3><p>Consider the field of law enforcement. Police officers undergo rigorous training that centers largely on maintaining law and order, and addressing criminal behavior. But when faced with situations requiring social work skills, such as dealing with individuals suffering from mental health issues or substance abuse, their training might prove inadequate. For instance, an officer trained in combat and negotiation techniques may not be as effective in de-escalating a crisis involving a distressed individual compared to a social worker trained in empathetic communication and therapeutic approaches.</p><h3>In Medicine:</h3><p>In the field of medicine, similar patterns can be observed. Doctors spend years mastering the intricate details of the human body, diseases, and treatments. However, when it comes to nutrition — a fundamental aspect of health — their education might be surprisingly scant. Thus, while a doctor can expertly diagnose a health condition and prescribe medication, they might lack the comprehensive knowledge to advise on dietary changes that could prevent the condition in the first place or aid in recovery.</p><p>I learned this first hand as a massage therapist. After all, if sickness communicates through the body’s tissues, why aren’t doctors and nurses palpating tissue to figure out what might be going on in the body? Bridging gaps like these could ultimately lead to more informed and holistic decisions in healthcare and other fields.</p><h3>In Schooling:</h3><p>Educators, too, encounter similar limitations. Teachers are trained to instruct on specific subjects, but they may not always be equipped to address the varied learning styles of their students or their emotional and social needs. An educator trained in traditional teaching methods may struggle to effectively teach a student who learns best through experiential or kinesthetic methods.</p><p>And it isn’t just in these high-profile fields that we see the effects of specialized training. Across countless professions, from business to tech to the creative arts, narrowly focused training can lead to a lack of adaptability and a limited ability to address complex, multifaceted problems.</p><h3>A Source of Opportunity</h3><p>This isn’t to undermine the value of specialized training; expertise in a particular field is crucial and irreplaceable.
