Project Overview

thereels is a movie review \ recommendation app that grants users fast and easy access to movie ratings and information. It is an app which allows users access movie ratings, plot overviews and other relevant information as well as allows them to drop their own ratings, reviews and alos chat with other movies enthusiasts.

My Role

Solo UI/UX Designer responsible for the application’s designs and experience from conception to delivery.

The Goal

The goal was to design a movie review app to help movie enthusiasts and people who’d like to watch a movie access reviews. ratinas and get movie recommendations as well as also connect with other movie lovers and enthusiasts.

Design Process

User Research Summary

I conducted interviews and created an empathy map to understand the users l’m designing for.

A primary user group identified through the research were movie enthusiasts who are unable to decide what movie to watch or experience difficulty accessing movie ratings ard reviews.

This user group confirmed initial assumptions about thereels potential users, but research also revealed that indecisiveness as regards movies to see and access to ratings and reviews were not the only factors for using this app. Other user problems includes, wanting to connect with fellow movie enthusiasts to form a sort of community where movie discussions, theories and recommendations could be shared and discussed.

Based on the responses I got from the user interview, I created a user persona and an empathy map to identify users pain points, goals, thoughts etc.

So, thanks to the ongoing ASUU strike, I saw a need to do something I love so I decided to pursue a career in User Experience Design. I took the google ux design course on coursera and believe me taking this course was one thing but finishing was another. The commitment I had to give, the struggle to continue and the deadlines I had to meet up with were a lot. It wasn’t an easy ride but I’m glad I pulled through and completed it. It was worth my time and I learnt a lot from it.

However, the real struggle started with job and internships searching as I’ve been trying to land gigs and internships for months now with no success — yet, fingers crossed 🤞🏽 and I have come to realize that the field of UI/UX design is not so easy after all (Big Idea #1 nothing is easy), anyways, after months of applying and getting rejections I decided to take a break from the whole job searching process and rather focus on improving my mental health, learning, as well as improving myself and skills.

So at the beginning of September my goals were to learn more, read and kickstart my medium page and I was able to achieve all these — after this post.

I read books like — Refactoring UI by Adam Wathan and Steve Schoger, Steal like an Artist by Austin Kleon, Just Enough Research by Erika Hall and Color Psychology. I completed some courses I had began months back but most importantly I learnt a lot and was able to take a step back, re — evaluate and recharge 🔋

October should be even more fun and exciting, because for one, it’s my birth month — woohoo 🎉 ,I have some classes to take, more books to read and more learning (Big Idea #2 learning never stops). Can’t wait to experience the goodies October has in store for me.
