Why we chose to develop a domain name service？

Recently, many progress has been made in IC Naming to improve the user experience and our team are very dedicating in continuously perfecting IC Naming. We have optimized many places such as improved the loading speed and user experience.

Since last year, IC Naming has been continuously developing and advancing itself. The project code of IC Naming is always open sourced. You can browse the relevant documents and JS-SDK in our github. During this period of time, we rarely talked about why we chose Dfinity and why we chose to develop a domain name service. We believe that Dfinity is the public chain that carries the most potential to demonstrating what Web3 should look like. IC Naming is the largest domain name service on Dfinity. With the continuous development of Dfinity, IC Naming will have a huge potential to be one of the top-notch players in the decentralized name service.

Now is still the early stage to adopt decentralized name service. In the era of Web2, the number of top-level domain names that has been registered in the world has exceeded 300 million. In contrast, in the world of Web3, the largest domain name service — — ENS, only has a total number of 2 million registered domain names, which indicates the number of registered decentralized domain names are less than 1% of the total number of registered traditional domain names. Therefore, it is only the beginning of decentralized domain names’ rising. IC（Dfinity）is a promising high-performance public chain. It has many advantages, including both smart contracts and built-in storage, high speed, low cost, and very developer and user friendly.

Dfinity is the public chain that carries the most potential to demonstrating what Web3 should look like. At present, IC can directly support the release of decentralized websites. At the same time, based on the strong contract support and built-in storage of Dfinity, it will definitely glow in the Web3 world. As we know, the domain names are the entrance to decentralized websites, and more importantly, it is a decentralized identity. We can see that Dfinity has many great social media Dapps and Defi projects that emerged within just one year after its launch, from dapps such as DSCVR (decentralized Reddit) to Distrikt (decentralized Twitter) and OpenChat (decentralized chat), etc. Therefore, as a cross system identity, domain names will play a very important role in those application scenarios.

The goal of IC Naming: create a unique digital identity for every Web3 user. At present, users’ identities in Web3 are based on different wallet addresses. Wallet address often has a long and unreadable numbers and alphabets, just like the IP address. Display the identity with a bunch of numbers and alphabets that can be understood by the machine is an effective way of identification, but not a user-friendly way. Thus, in the future, users’ digital identities must be easy to understand and remember.

In the future, IC Naming will become a digital identity that is compatible with any public chains. However, as we all know, there is a huge problem in the Web3 world: Information interaction between different public chains is difficult and vulnerable to attacks. Between different public chains, the digital identity and liquidity of users has been separated. At present, there is ENS on Ethereum, Space ID on BNB chain and IC Naming on IC（Dfinity）, but the digital identities of the three projects are not interconnected. IC Naming chose to build domain name service on IC, because IC has a chain-key technology, which can make it compatible with all the public chains that uses ECDSA as the underlying cryptographic algorithm for interaction through smart contracts. This is a unique advantage of IC Naming.

Still, there’s a long way to go, but we are progressing each step we take as planned. Now, there are several key steps that I would like to share with you.

First, IC Naming will integrate with as many applications as possible. We know that most of the users are concerned about the collaborations between IC Naming and other projects. We think that collaborations with other projects are the most important step for us, but before collaborations, we have to optimize and advance IC Naming first to improve the user experience. In recent weeks, IC Naming’s back-end code and UI have been both updated and the collaborations with Relation and Yumi Marketplace are also near completion. Next, we will open to collaborations with more projects, and the latest news will be synchronized on Twitter.

Second, IC Naming will conform to the spirit of Web3: decentralization. In our plan, IC Naming DAO is a key part of our next step, a key step for the project to achieve community governance and sharing profit. In addition, our previous commitment will not change. Q1: What is DNS?

DNS is the governance token of IC Naming. The airdrop and distribution of DNS is to issue the voting rights of future DAOs.

When the new version was launched, we received a lot of questions about DNS, including what the token economics is, when will DNS be traded, etc. DNS is a governance token, and the purpose of DNS is to vote on DAO proposals. As an asset of IC Naming, DNS will be open for trading in the future.

Q2: What is the token economic?

Many users ask about the token economics of DNS. The token economics will be introduced in an article when the DAO comes out. I know everyone cares about the value of DNS tokens. The value of a single token is determined by the total value of the system and the total amount of tokens in circulation. In other words, more users IC Naming has, and more projects we are integrated, the higher value of a single token will be.

Regarding the token economics, I can assure you of three things:

The earliest token unlock time for the team is one year after the announcement of the token economics, it will be around the end of 2023. Until then we only have voting rights and no tokens will be sold by the IC Naming team.
Early participants will get more discounts, either on tokens or quotas. Early users will be the core users of IC Naming, we will protect your interests at all cost.
After DAO, there will be a dashboard, which will display various data of IC Naming in real time, such as DNS circulation, DNS price, etc.

Q4: Will the form of blind box changes in the future or considering distribute names in other ways?

Blind box is a fun and fair way to distribute names. The blind box mechanism reflects our vision for IC Naming, a fair and open, community-based governance, shared benefits and long-term operation project.

We have no plans to change the current way to distribute names for the time being. Of course, if there is a better distribution method, we will apply.

Q5: The description of the two airdrops and whether there will be any more future airdrops?

The two airdrops are for users who registered domain names in the old version and users who registered “.ic”names before tweeting for the second round airdrop. The rules for the two airdrops are the same.

In the future, if there’s major updates, we will consider do more airdrops.

Q6: What does the IC Namig DAO do, and when will the DAO be launched?

IC Naming will adopt a community-based governance in the future, and IC Naming DAO is a platform to achieve this goal. There will be corresponding rules in DAO, and users can make various proposals according to the rules. For example, if you want IC Naming to integrate with one project that you like first, you can do that by submitting a proposal. Q7: What are the future directions of IC Naming?

Highlights of the ICNaming 2.0: Introducing the revolutionary blind box and name market

Overview:

In this article, we are going to introduce two unique new features of IC Naming.

We are going to introduce the blind box, which is an unprecedented and creative feature of our own, and that’s why it is much superior compared to other similar projects in the market.

First, it introduces a new way to explore the possibilities of name service, which carrying our core beliefs: fairness.

Second, the blind box works on a mechanism of uncertainty, which creates a lot of fun when users get involved.

Third, our initial probability design creates a higher chance for users to get more quotas and rare quotas with minimum spending that the price is fairly reasonable in the market. As such, to prove that we provided price and the project that offers a similar service to compare and contrast, we also provided the chart to illustrate our probability design that is more beneficial for the users due to the much higher probability than natural distribution, which means it will carry out more benefit for our users at the beginning stage.

Lastly, we are going to introduce our name market, which is one the most important facility that supports the trading of IC names, and we will elaborate the further details regarding functions and modalities in the following paragraphs.

Blind box：

In our new version, we will distribute IC names in blind boxes to promote the fairness of the market. First, Let me introduce the rules of the blind box and the reasons for doing so.

Generally speaking, a 3-chars Web3 domain name costs more than $600. However, for the service providers of the domain name system, there is no essential difference between 3-chars and 7-chars names. The main reason for this to happen is that shorter names are easier to use and remember. Therefore, users prefer shorter names. Initially, we have considered this method: to make the price of short name higher. However, there’s no essential benefits for the users except bring more profit for creator themselves. That is not the way how decentralized system should be promoted. As an open sourced and decentralized name service system, we want to design a better distribution mechanism.

Our core value is to make IC Name accessible to everyone. IC name will become a revolutionary personal identity portal for Web3 that everyone can afford. On the other hand, we hope that IC names can be distributed to users smoothly and fairly. Blind box is a simple and interesting way to distribute IC names. Therefore, we decided to sell IC names in the form of blind boxes.

The price of the blind box is $3 each. Each blind box contains an IC name quota and some tokens. In previous address sales, the cheapest 7-chars domain name cost $3. Now, you have the chance to get rarer IC name quotas and some tokens with the same price.

The quota of IC name varies from 3-chars to 7-chars. As we all know, the number of 3 or 4-chars IC names is far less than that of 6 or 7-chars IC names. To make it clear, the number ratio of 3 to 7-chars IC names is listed in the table below. If the blind box probability is set according to the ratio of the natural distribution, the probability of getting a 3 or 4-chars IC name is extremely low. We adjusted the probability of the quotas of different digits to ensure that the revenue of the blind box is much greater than the selling price.

The following chart shows the detailed probability of the quota.

As you can see, the probability of each blind box is independent. In addition, we designed a minimum guarantee for 3 and 4-chars IC names.

As such, we could provide users a fair and better market environment. Even in the worst case, you can get a 3-chars IC name quota and 99 4~7-chars IC name quotas for $300, as well as a lot of tokens. Such a price is lower than that of any domain name service provider. If you’re lucky enough, you can even buy a 3-chars IC name for only $3. Some users will generate many long character quotas while obtaining short character quotas. These long quotas can be sold through the market, so that users who only want to register a long name can get a better deal than normal registration of a long name, which is more beneficial for the newcomers.

The rules that showed above, will not only increase users’ playfulness during the participation, it will also makes the whole system more valuable because of users’ participation, and the short quota will become more valuable. Thus, blind box is not only a mean to enhance the users’ willingness to obtain a short character quota, and also it promotes a free trading market with fair enough price for the long quota to be obtained. This is our innovative self-circulating decentralized system which helps IC Naming to become a truly sustainably project without any centralized operators.

As a reminder for everyone, the minimum guarantee for 3 and 4-chars IC names is only a reward that we creates to benefit our loyal users and it only applicable in the early stage of the release. As time goes on, the distribution model of IC names will change, and the minimum guarantee mechanism will decrease the chance with time pass. In other words, the probability of getting rare IC names will become smaller as time goes. The current probability design is a way to appreciate our loyal users who have always supported us.

Q&A

Why use blind boxes instead of auctions？

We have considered the way of auctioning names. Although it can complete the cold start in a very short period of time and obtain more funds from users who have participated in the early auction, which is beneficial to our team. However, in this way, users would fall into a cut-throat competition, it is detrimental for the market environment and requires the users to pay for the results, which is not a sustainable and ideal model for users themselves. Moreover, users who have more money and the ability to obtain the information in advance will gain more advantage in comparison to the later participants, which reduce later participants’ interest in participation. As a decentralized system, the reduction of the users’ willingness to participate will inevitably lead to the massive loss of all users sooner or later due to the unfriendly trading environment. Therefore, we abandoned the auction method for a greater good.

Name Market

I know you have been wondering about the information of our name market. We believe that names and quotas are valuable assets. If they can circulate freely among users, the whole system will become much healthier.

Therefore, the name market will support trading names and quotas, including on shelf, off shelf and transaction. In other words, not only the IC names from airdrop can be traded, but also the quota issued by the blind box can be traded as well. Due to the existence of the blind box mechanism, in order to obtain the short quota, users will have a large number of long quotas, as such the market function as a mean to help these holders to sell those quotas that they don’t use. Users who just want to buy a longer character quota can get a lower price to register through the market. Of course, users who have registered popular names through early participation can earn profits through market transactions.

Q1: How to deal with the name of ICP for the users who already registered?

A1：Don’t worry, your ICP name is still reserved. There’s no need to concern that the name will be taking back. Because our service is totally decentralized, which means that the name belongs to you completely. We will continue to provide ICP name services. However, ICP name can’t be renewed, which means that when the service expires, your ICP name can no longer be used.

Q2: How can I get a new IC name?

A2: In most cases, users who held the ICP name will automatically receive the airdrop of ‘.ic’ name. The IC name will be consistent with the ICP name.

For example, if you have previously registered “myname.icp” for one year, you will get “myname.ic” through airdrop and have a one-year service in return. At the same time, the “myname.icp” can’t be renewed, and after one-year service, it is going to be expired and will not longer be in service.

But there are some exceptions. In very few cases, you will not automatically receive the airdrop of ‘.ic’ name. It is not unreasonable. IC naming will cooperate and integrate with more and more projects in the future. We need to protect the rights of the projects to improve the possibility of future cooperation. A3: If you didn’t receive the airdrop of ‘.ic’ name, congratulations, you will get a much better airdrop reward. We will offer you 10 times the number of ‘.ic’ names that you didn’t get from the airdrop and the rewarding quota is going to be one chars shorter.

Q4: After the new version officially launched, will the supporting wallet change?

Overview

In this article, we are going to announce a couple big changes we made regarding IC Naming.

First, changing of the brand name and .icp tld. By doing this we are avoiding vicious competition and protect our users rights, also changing the tld are symbolizing a revolutionary step, preparing for a cross-chained name service in the future that will benefit more users.

Second, improvement of compatibility in the new version, our name service will be compatible with H5 and PC, which supports quota transactions.

Third, a supporting trading market that users can freely buy, sell and trade name quotas.

Last but not least, a community governed system — DAO within our service, we will release governance token to achieve complete community self-governance.

Here is a quick throwback of what IC naming has accomplished so far. At the end of 2021, IC Naming testnet was launched as the first decentralized name service on IC ecosystem. We are the first one who create .icp TLD. In 2022,our mainnet was officially launched and on the same day the number of IC Naming registrations exceeded 5000. In order to make name services more convenient, we released IC Naming extensions for browsers from very early on. Users could access to our service by installing an IC Naming extensions in any browsers. We also partnered with many projects such as Astrox, stoic wallet, ICP Box etc. IC Naming are aiming to be the key carrier of our user’s digital identity in Web 3.0. All of that would be extremely unfair for other developers on IC, and it’s definitely not friendly to maintain a positive environment on IC ecosystem. In order to avoid such confusion and protect our users’ rights. We decide to change our tld. As such we could provide our users an unique, better and cooler experience. Is IC considering using centralized gateways?

We are not the only team in IC to make naming system.We noticed that some domain name service projects use decentralized gateway to solve the problem of browser access.To be honest, long ago, this problem was considered by the team, and we have made sufficient solutions to it.

1. Please tell us about you, your name, position in the project, your credentials, etc., so that we can introduce you.

I’m Roy, and I’m the core developer of IC Naming. I have four years of experience in the blockchain industry and two years of experience in researching and developing underlying computer protocols‌‌.

2. What attracted you initially to Blockchain?

Trustless permissions with Blockchain have an unparalleled appeal to me, and it’s awesome. I am happy and honored to build a reliable name service for this trustless machine‌‌.

3. Of all the platforms you could have chosen, why did you decide to build on the Internet Computer?

DFINITY is a singularity on the road of blockchain technology development. DFINITY has smart contracts that are more convenient for developers, built-in decentralized storage, and can be considered as a combination of ETH + IPFS. The reverse Gas model makes IC-based products easier to use, and it has performance close to the Internet to provide developers with Services.

4. How long has your company been established, and what is your business model based on?

We are a decentralized team; all team members have rich experience in open-source projects. We are building IC Naming as an open-source project, making the whole project more transparent.‌‌

5. What makes your company marketable, and what will ensure its long-term success?

The infrastructure and the most important thing for infrastructure to maintain long-term success is reliable quality and easy integration. IC Naming as an open-source project can be seen from our code repository. We have a lot of unit testing and automated integration testing code to ensure the quality of the whole IC Naming project.

At the same time, we have opened and open-sourced the JS-SDK, and we will enrich the related technical documentation to make it easy for developers to integrate and use IC Naming’s services. The initial challenge was that some of the members did not know enough about the IC. After getting everyone to fully understand the IC (thanks to our technical advisor Witter, everyone soon agreed to provide infrastructure. 7. What overall vision do you have? Do you have a roadmap? If so, what does it involve?

1.For users who transfer before 2022–2–28 12:00:00 UTC, we will refund all ICP you paid. Although our mainnet launch time is 2022–2–28 12:00:00 UTC, some enthusiastic users have joined the mainnet in advance, and we have cleared their data to ensure fairness. To reward these enthusiastic participants, we are giving out additional ICP benefits, the benefits amount is equal to the amount you paid, which means that you will receive double ICP, so go to ICNaming and choose your favorite name again!

This makes it impossible for ICNaming to immediately confirm the transaction.

To this end, ICNaming has designed a timer to scan all transfer records and find out the correct transfer records. So, if this is the case, it may take 1–2 minutes for the payment to be confirmed. At this point, ICNaming can’t do anything other than remind users not to make repeated payments.

This is the current situation and we are very sorry. So if you find this prompt after transferring money, be sure to confirm whether ICP has been taken away. If it has been taken away, please do not repeat the payment. While we can handle such events, we still hope he doesn’t have to.
