1. How Google Works

If you want to kickstart your journey into SEO, then you’ll need at least a basic understanding of how Google works.

We consider this guide Moz’s own take on the above, but instead of focusing solely on Google, it takes into consideration all search engines.

It’s also broken down into handy chapters, so if you ain’t interested in a particular topic, you can just skip on over to something else.

4. Metadata and SEO

When developing any WordPress website, we always use the Yoast plugin to facilitate with SEO so we couldn’t not give them a mention here.

The plugin itself gives great guidance on metadata, but this article provides a much more in-depth look at meta titles, descriptions, keyphrases and more — and in our opinion is a must read.

5. Build Quality Backlinks

In this article, Neil Patel gives a comprehensive overview on how you can build your own quality backlinks.

The post is broken down into four chapters, “Understanding What Google Wants”, “How To Scale Your Link Building Efforts”, “Keyword Research & Targeting” and “How To Earn Editorial Links”, each of which guide you through the process of creating your own link building strategy.

Also, it was written after Google’s “Penguin” update thus making it especially relevant today.

It’s a well-known fact that broken links hurt your website.

This tool allows you to find those broken links with ease, allowing you to remedy them before they become too problematic.

7. Google Trends

If you want to stay on top of your SEO game, it’s probably best to stay aware of current trends — and as luck would have it, Google has a handy tool for just that.

For example, if you use it to check the search term “Web Designer”, you’ll be given a detailed breakdown of that search term over time, the interest by region and sub-region, and any related topics and queries to it — you can even compare it directly to other search terms to see which yields the best results.
