Together, they help teams see whether AI visibility is creating commercial momentum.</p><h3>What to Do Now</h3><p><strong>Build a prompt set before buying tools.</strong> Map 50 to 100 prompts across informational, comparison, problem-aware, solution-aware, and decision-stage intent. Include the questions real prospects ask sales.</p><p><strong>Benchmark against competitors.</strong> A citation count means little without context. Most commercial sites had already lost the visible benefit.</p><p>The bigger message is harder to ignore: Google is continuing to strip back structured data features that became overused as SERP real estate hacks. FAQ markup may still describe content, but it no longer earns the expanded Google result that made it a default recommendation in so many SEO audits.</p><h3>Google’s FAQ Rich Result Phaseout Is Now Complete</h3><p>FAQ rich results let eligible pages show expandable questions and answers directly in Google’s search results. For years, that made FAQPage structured data attractive to publishers, ecommerce sites, SaaS companies, agencies, and local businesses.</p><p>The appeal was simple. A standard blue-link result could become larger, more useful, and more visible. In competitive SERPs, that extra space mattered.</p><p>That era is over.</p><p>Google’s current FAQ structured data documentation says FAQ rich results are no longer appearing in Search. It is outdated SEO process.</p><p>If FAQ schema still appears in technical audits as a high-priority visibility tactic for normal commercial pages, that recommendation needs to be retired.</p><h3>The Bigger Shift: Google Is Reducing SERP Decoration</h3><p>This change fits a broader pattern. Google is becoming more selective about which structured data types produce visible search features.</p><p>That does not mean schema is useless. It means the easy win era is thinner.</p><p>For years, some SEO teams treated structured data as a way to decorate listings. Add markup, validate it, wait for rich results, claim success. FAQ schema became one of the easiest examples because it could be added at scale across templates, landing pages, blog posts, and product pages.</p><p>The problem was predictable. When too many sites use the same feature for visual advantage, the feature becomes less useful for searchers. FAQ blocks could push other listings down, repeat information already on the page, and reward pages that added thin question-and-answer sections for markup rather than user value.</p><p>Google’s response has been to narrow, remove, or deprecate features that no longer improve the result page. The 2026 FAQ change is less about one schema type and more about the end of a mindset: structured data is not a loophole for more pixels.</p><h3>FAQ Content Still Has a Job</h3><p>Removing FAQ rich results does not mean removing FAQ content.</p><p>A good FAQ section can still help users make decisions, reduce support friction, clarify pricing or eligibility, and capture long-tail search demand. It can help content teams identify gaps in messaging.</p><p>The question is whether the FAQ exists for users or for markup.</p><p>Thin FAQ blocks added only to trigger rich results should be cut, merged, or rewritten. Useful FAQ content should stay, but it should be judged by normal content standards: does it answer real questions, reduce friction, support conversion, or strengthen topical coverage?</p><p>This is where many teams will need to clean up old habits. FAQs placed at the bottom of every page with generic questions like “Why choose us?” or “What makes our solution different?” rarely add search value. They read like SEO leftovers.</p><p>Better FAQs answer specific questions buyers, patients, citizens, or customers actually ask before taking action.</p><h3>Structured Data Still Matters, But the Bar Is Higher</h3><p>The wrong response is to treat this as the death of schema.</p><p>Structured data still helps search engines understand page entities, content types, products, reviews, events, organizations, breadcrumbs, videos, articles, and other structured information. Some schema types still support visible rich results. Others may help with interpretation, eligibility, or consistency across search surfaces.</p><p>The better response is to stop applying schema as a checklist and start mapping it to content reality.</p><p>A product page should have accurate product data. A recipe page should use recipe markup. A job page should use job posting markup. An article should be marked up as an article when it fits. A local business should keep core business information clean and consistent.</p><p>But FAQPage markup should no longer be sold internally as a Google visibility tactic. At most, it is a low-priority semantic layer that may have value outside Google or in future machine interpretation. That is not enough to justify heavy development work for most teams.</p><h3>What to Do Now</h3><ul><li><strong>Audit pages with FAQPage markup.</strong> Identify where FAQ schema is still deployed and whether those pages ever received meaningful FAQ-rich visibility after 2023.</li><li><strong>Update SEO reporting.</strong> Remove FAQ rich results from dashboards, automated Search Console pulls, and client-facing reports before Google’s June and August reporting changes create confusion.</li><li><strong>Do not remove useful FAQ content by default.</strong> Keep sections that answer real user questions. Cut only the shallow blocks created mainly for markup.</li><li><strong>Reprioritize structured data work.</strong> Shift effort toward schema types tied to active rich result opportunities, entity clarity, ecommerce accuracy, local visibility, or content classification.</li><li><strong>Watch affected government and health pages.</strong> If those sites still received FAQ rich results, compare click-through rate and impressions before and after May 7, 2026.</li></ul><p>The FAQ rich result was useful when Google rewarded it. AI Overviews may not be creating a cleaner version of classic search. They may be training users into a faster “resolve and leave” pattern, where Google captures more intent and websites compete for fewer, more selective clicks.</p><h3>Google’s Search Usage Claim Looks Too Broad</h3><p>Google’s own statements are not subtle. At Google I/O 2024, Sundar Pichai said people were using Search in new ways, asking longer and more complex queries, and getting back the best of the web.
