Building Beyond the Brand And Sale

Journey as professional Trade Marketer

Since high school, I’ve been passionate about business and investment. I was fascinated by how some people could build ideas into companies, create jobs, and generate impact beyond themselves. That passion guided my studies, and I graduated with a degree in Digital Economy, believing it would become a strong foundation for the future.

In 2024, I decided to join my current company, Heineken, where I took on the role of a Trade Marketer. This decision was not random — it was deeply connected to both my previous experiences and my inspiration to become business builder.

As a professional on-trade marketer, I quickly realized that success goes far beyond simply pushing sales or placing products. It’s about standing at the intersection of consumers, customers, competitors, and even our own company, and learning how to balance their needs. Trade marketing taught me that to win, you must:

Truly understand your consumer — what they want, why they choose, how they behave.

Respect your customer — the outlets, partners, and owners who bring your brand to life.

Anticipate your competitors — their moves, their strengths, and their weaknesses.

And finally, maximize what your own company can provide — leveraging tools, resources, and strategies to create the biggest impact.

This role became more than a job — it became a training ground for business building. Every campaign, negotiation, and activation is not just about selling beer — it’s about learning how to create value, solve problems, and build systems that last.

Trade marketing gave me the lens to see opportunities where others see challenges. It reminded me that business building is not about having unlimited resources, but about learning how to leverage what you already have to gain maximum benefit.

Introduction

In the past year, I had the profound privilege of co-founding and co-leading the ASEAN Digital Literacy initiative in Cambodia. This experience has not only been transformative for the students we reached but also for me personally. As digital technologies continue to play an increasingly significant role in boosting Cambodia’s economy, ensuring that all citizens possess the necessary digital skills and knowledge, known as digital literacy, has become a critical mission. This blog reflects on my journey, the importance of digital literacy in Cambodia, and the impact of our program on underprivileged students.

The Digital Divide in Cambodia

Despite Cambodia’s high internet penetration rate, a significant portion of its population lacks essential digital literacy skills. Internet access alone does not equate to digital competency. A study by the UNDP revealed that Cambodian youth perform below global averages in ICT tests, even though 87% are frequent internet users. Moreover, UNESCO estimated that only 1.23 out of 3.33 million primary and secondary school students benefit from e-learning and distance learning initiatives. This gap highlights an urgent need for formal digital literacy training, which became the driving force behind our program.

The Birth of ASEAN Digital Literacy

Witnessing the digital divide in Cambodia sparked a determination in me and my colleagues to make a difference. We envisioned a program that would provide formal digital literacy training to underprivileged students who had never had access to such education. Our objectives were clear:

Increase Digital Literacy Training: To ensure that underprivileged Cambodian students receive formal digital literacy training.

Promote Computational Thinking: To teach students to create and edit digital content using Scratch and Canva, enabling them to express themselves digitally.

Enhance Digital Awareness: To increase awareness of digital navigation, including understanding digital interaction norms, filtering out irrelevant information, and protecting personal data and privacy.

Program Curriculum

Our program was meticulously designed to cover essential aspects of digital literacy over four weeks, each session lasting 60 minutes. Here’s a brief overview of the curriculum:

Week 1: Digital Literacy and Etiquette

Week 2: Digital Safety and Security

Week 3: Coding with Scratch

Week 4: ID Card Creation

The sessions were held on the following dates: November 18, November 25, December 2, and December 9, 2023.

Personal Reflections

Co-founding this initiative has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’ve seen firsthand how digital literacy can transform lives. Here are some personal reflections on why this work is so crucial:

Empowering the Youth: Watching students gain confidence as they navigate digital tools and platforms is incredibly fulfilling. Digital literacy empowers them to access information, express themselves, and pursue opportunities they might have never considered before.

Bridging the Gap: Addressing the digital divide is not just about technology; it’s about equity. Providing these students with the skills they need to thrive in a digital world helps bridge the socio-economic gap, fostering a more inclusive society.

Building a Better Future: By equipping young Cambodians with digital skills, we’re investing in the country’s future. These students will be better prepared to contribute to the economy, innovate, and lead in a technology-driven world.

Community and Connection: The program has fostered a sense of community among participants. They learn not just from us but from each other, building a network of support and collaboration that extends beyond the classroom.

Conclusion

The ASEAN Digital Literacy program has been a testament to the power of education and the potential of young minds. As we continue to expand our efforts, I remain committed to bridging the digital divide and empowering the next generation of Cambodian leaders. This journey has shown me that with dedication and the right resources, we can create lasting change and a brighter future for all.

Reflecting on this past year, I am filled with hope and determination. The digital literacy skills we’ve imparted are just the beginning. There is so much more to do, and I am excited to continue this journey, making a difference one student at a time.

I faced many challenges, and I also had moments of great joy. Let me share my story with you.

I began by taking part in various competitions. Sometimes I won, and other times I didn’t do so well. Winning felt amazing, but it was those times when I didn’t win that taught me the most. They showed me that success doesn’t always come easy and that when things get tough, it’s essential to keep trying and improving. These moments taught me about being strong and never giving up.

Then came the chapter on volunteering. I met so many different people during this time, from little kids to inspiring leaders. It was through volunteering that I learned about the power of connecting with others. I realized that kindness and helping one another could make a huge difference in the world. This was when I truly understood the importance of love and support.

As my journey continued, I found myself working with people from all around the world — Australia, the Netherlands, India, Pakistan, Japan, Switzerland, Singapore, Korea, and many more places. It was like a cultural adventure. I discovered that when we bring together people from different backgrounds, amazing things can happen. We all had unique ideas, skills, and ways of doing things. This diversity was a treasure. I learned to respect these differences and to value them.

Working with such a diverse group also taught me about collaboration. Instead of competing with each other, we decided to work together towards common goals. It was like a puzzle, where each person brought a special piece to complete the picture. This teamwork made us stronger, and we achieved things we couldn’t have done alone. We were united by our common purpose.

In this multicultural environment, I also learned about compromise. It meant finding middle ground when we disagreed, respecting each other’s ideas, and sometimes giving up something we wanted for the greater good. It wasn’t always easy, but it was worth it. Compromise helped us maintain harmony and work together smoothly.

In my academic journey, I discovered my love for technology and business. I was particularly interested in blockchain technology and how it could be used in public administrations. My goal was to use this technology to help modernize my beloved Cambodia. It was a small part of contributing to society, guided by the principles of love and protection.

In the end, my journey taught me that life is all about love, support, respect, and protection. These principles guided me through competitions, volunteering, and academic pursuits. They made me a better person and allowed me to make a positive impact on the world, especially in my beloved Cambodia. So, as you go on your own journey, remember these principles — they can light your way too.

As the world continues to witness remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), its potential to revolutionize societies, industries, and economies becomes increasingly evident. In the context of developing countries like Cambodia, AI holds immense promise to drive progress, address societal challenges, and propel the nation toward a prosperous future. In this blog post, we will explore the transformative impact of AI on Cambodia and discuss how it can shape the country’s trajectory in various sectors.

Education and Skills Development: Education is a fundamental pillar for the development of any nation, and AI has the potential to revolutionize the education landscape in Cambodia. Smart farming techniques, driven by AI and sensor technologies, enable efficient resource management, precise crop monitoring, and automated irrigation systems. AI-powered data analysis can provide valuable insights into weather patterns, soil quality, and pest control, empowering farmers to make informed decisions and maximize yields. This integration of AI in agriculture can help alleviate poverty, enhance rural livelihoods, and drive sustainable growth.

Healthcare and Public Health: AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery and public health initiatives in Cambodia. Telemedicine platforms powered by AI algorithms can bridge the gap between healthcare providers and remote communities, expanding access to quality healthcare services. AI-enabled diagnostic tools can improve the accuracy and speed of disease detection, aiding in early interventions and reducing healthcare costs. Furthermore, AI-driven data analysis can assist in disease surveillance, outbreak prediction, and resource allocation, strengthening Cambodia’s public health systems and emergency response capabilities.

Smart Infrastructure and Urban Development: As Cambodia experiences rapid urbanization, AI can contribute to building smart and sustainable cities. Smart infrastructure systems, such as intelligent transportation networks, energy grids, and waste management systems, can optimize resource utilization and enhance efficiency. AI algorithms can analyze data from sensors and IoT devices to improve traffic flow, reduce energy consumption, and minimize environmental impact. Additionally, AI-powered urban planning and management systems can aid in designing resilient cities, optimizing land use, and ensuring a high quality of life for citizens.

Economic Growth and Digital Transformation: AI’s impact on Cambodia’s economy extends beyond specific sectors. By embracing AI, the country can foster innovation, attract investment, and drive digital transformation. The integration of AI technologies can enhance productivity, improve supply chain management, and support the growth of emerging industries such as e-commerce and fintech. AI can also fuel entrepreneurship and job creation, empowering Cambodians to participate in the digital economy and contributing to sustainable economic growth.

In conclusion: As Cambodia continues on its path of development, embracing AI will be crucial for unlocking its full potential. From education to agriculture, healthcare to infrastructure, AI can reshape industries, drive inclusive growth, and address societal challenges. However, it is essential to ensure that AI adoption is accompanied by robust governance frameworks, ethical considerations, and the development of AI skills and expertise. By harnessing the power of AI, Cambodia can pave the way for a future that is innovative, sustainable, and prosperous, empowering its citizens and positioning itself as a leading player in the global digital landscape.
