“What is my function as a manager responsible for an important area of activity in a fairly large company? It can be described by the word bottleneck. The higher the management floor, the more you are such a bottleneck. With each floor, the volume of tasks, expectations, contacts with people, and incoming information multiplies, but you do not increase. The amount of time and energy is not growing 10 times a year. So your main tool is very rigid prioritisation. At the very top, it is quite ruthless” — Ruslan Lobachev, one of the top managers of Miro.

How to choose? It should be those tasks that have a maximum multiplicative effect. For example, expanding the team: you invest two months in expansion, and then the team itself starts to do two or three times as much. Another example is forming common principles and processes. If you did something yourself, it is plus one, and if you broadcast it, explain the strategy to the team and build the process, you multiply it by N, where N is the number of people in the team.

In 2018 in Moscow were at least 15 companies offering this service. When I moved to New Zealand I was looking for the car share options as well. Car sharing here also exists, though not as developed as in Russia or in Europe. Recently, one of the car share operators announced the launch of a weekly car rental from $99. So, I decided to find out whether using car sharing is beneficial and compare costs with owning a car.

Car sharing companies in New Zealand

As I found out, car sharing came to New Zealand in 2007. There 3 companies CityHop, Yoogo Share and Move are much talked about. Just 2 of them offer rent by the minute, and all of them allow finishing parking only on special parking places. It means you cannot complete the rent where you want as you can in Moscow for example.
At the moment, car sharing in New Zealand is available in Auckland, Wellington and Сhristchurch. CityHop is positioning itself as the first per-minute car rental company in the nation. Their cars can be used in Auckland and Wellington. The other two Yoogo Share and Move only offer EV cars in Сhristchurch and Auckland (Yoogo) and Wellington (Move). I like the whole idea of electric vehicles as it reflects my personal values for reducing emissions of CO2 and saving our planet in the long-term.

Car choice and price

CityHop offers cars from Toyota Yaris to Toyota Rav 4 SUVs or Mitsubishi Outlander. The company also has the opportunity to rent a van Toyota Hiace, Toyota Wagon and started full EV Nissan Leaf or Toyota Prius hybrid cars. All cars with automatic transmission.

YoogoShare offers only two models of electric vehicles: Hyundai IONIQ and BMW i3. Cars are equipped with GPS-navigation, climate control, cruise control, phone BT-connection, rear-view camera and other modern features.

Wellington’s Mevo offers hybrid Audi A3 Sportback e-tron®, also equipped with everything you need for comfortable driving around the city.

Prices for companies vary and depend on the annual plan, duration of use (per minute, per hour, per day or even per week), by type of car, and also by city.

All carsharing operators have an insurance option. In case of accident, the driver will be charged an amount of insurance fee. CityHop has an excess fee of $1200, which can be reduced to $500 for an additional $1.5 per hour. At Mevo the standard access fee is $1500 and $3000 for international driver license holders. At Yoogo Share insurance excess is $2000, which is quite a lot.

Restrictions on car sharing

First of all, each carsharing operator limits the daily trip time. CityHop includes 150 km, Yoogo Share 180 km, and Mevo 200 km per day. If necessary, this limit can be extended for an additional fee.

Yoogo Share launched a weekly rate with a cost of $99 in Christchurch and $145 per week in Auckland. Which is quite cheap and sounds like a sweet deal! But the price limits driving time. Thus, the car is available only from 5 pm to 9 am on workdays and from 5 pm Friday to 9 am Monday. So, you have a car only after work or on weekends. The rest of the time, the car should be parked at the charging station in CBD, or it can be used, but for an additional fee at the usual rate.

Another restriction relates to car parking when you’re finishing the rent. So, only Mevo allows you to park the car anywhere in the permitted “home area” in ​​Wellington. The remaining companies require you to complete the rental on special parking spaces, and if the place is occupied, then park somewhere nearby and be sure to tell the exact address after that.

Perhaps, this is the main disadvantage of car sharing in New Zealand because it doesn’t give you complete freedom.

Isn’t it cheaper to take Uber?

Yeah, you might be thinking it’s better and cheaper to take a taxi. Might be. In my practice, carsharing is often cheaper. Let’s see on these 3 examples:

1. In Auckland, a 10-minute drive from downtown to Mount Eden on Uber will cost you around $12. A similar trip on CityHop would cost $15 ($13 per hour + $0.40 / km). A trip on YooGo would have gone out at $ 4.5 if you pay per minute, or $ 10 per hour if you pay per hour. But in this case, the car must be returned to CBD after all.
2. If you need a longer trip, for example, a 30-minute trip from the center to the North Shore, then CityHop is much cheaper, since Uber in this case already shows the cost of $30 one way.
3. In Christchurch, 10 minutes on YooGo cost $ 4.5. In Wellington, it’s $6 on Mevo. The cost of a 10-minute trip to Uber is about $10–15, depending on traffic, so even short trips are cheaper.
   As a result, I would say long trips on carsharing are more profitable, short trips aren’t always.

Car sharing expenses VS car owning expenses

Finally, how beneficial is to use car sharing in the city? The answer to the question depends on how often you are going to drive, whether you live close to your work or not, whether you need a car during the daytime on weekdays and from many other factors.
I tried to compare on a personal example and calculated how much it costs to own a car in Auckland, using a 2.4-litre petrol Toyota Grandis as an example. Since I don’t own a car, I asked my friend to calculate all his car expenses. He lives around 30 km from the centre and travels 2 times every day on weekdays and one day on weekends. All expenses are per year:

Parking in the city $3,120

91 Petrol $ 4,576
Total: $ 9,396

All expenses are $ 9,396 per year or about $180 per week. If we take into account an average of 6 days a week, then we get $30 per day or $0.30 per minute. The petrol consumption was calculated based on the average consumption in the urban cycle, the actual cost of 91st gasoline in May 2019 and the duration of the trip.

Now I know my expenses and can compare a trip cost in my car with car sharing costs in Auckland (Move is excluded from the table, as it is available only in Wellington):

As can be seen from the table, the weekly rental of a YooGo car on EV is more beneficial than a personal car for my friend.

In this case, of course, we take in mind the restrictions of that weekly car sharing — the price includes driving a car from 5 pm to 9 am on weekdays and the full weekends.

Thus, car share might be good for those who work in the center of Auckland and don’t use the car during the daytime hours. If the work involves constant trips or your office isn’t in CBD, then using car sharing will be an inconvenient and expensive option. Also, the carsharing option is beneficial for those who came to New Zealand for a short time, for example for students, and don’t want to bother buying a car.

In conclusion, car sharing is a good option for short trips for those who don’t have a car. It is often cheaper than taxi rides, can be used for Sunday shopping trips or for going out of town on weekends. The situation may change with the advent of such weekly tariffs, which, under certain conditions, are cheaper than owning a car. In other cases, own a car is still a more convenient option.

So, it happens that I am a student again. Six months ago, I began to study the digital marketing diploma program and here I am — sitting at the desk. Live and learn.

This post is a short guide on how to write an essay or academic paper. Where to begin? How to plan? Or not to plan? Based on practice works in New Zealand or Australia, I think it is relevant for other countries.

These steps help me to write the work. They came from my own experience. Someone will find this useful, someone not. So, here they are.

1. Read the assignment guide carefully

Yes, this may seem obvious, but it is what the guide made for. It’ll become clear what is expected of you.

Look, any work has 2 interested parties — the client and the implementer. Consider the assessment guide as a client brief where the client is your tutor. The guide contains all requirements, deadlines (usually one), task weight, fonts to use, etc. It says exactly what the client (teacher) wants from you as a result.

2. Define questions

Search for keywords and understand them right. Usually, all questions begin with keywords. The keyword gives a clue about what is required to write.

For example,

• Critically evaluate / critically examine means give your judgement (objectively) from both sides;
• Argue means support or reject a position by presenting reasons and evidence for/against each position;
• Discuss investigate by looking at all sides of an issue/issues.

3. Understand marking criteria

Marking criteria and results clarifies how your work will be assessed and how many points you will receive.

The criteria are usually clearly written — what exactly should be in each part. Therefore, don’t write too much or away from the topic. Write clearly what is required of you. Save your time.

4. If you have questions, ask them

If there are still questions after the first two points, do not hide and ask them to the teacher before it becomes too late. Therefore, it‘s important to read the assessment guide when you are still at the university and have the opportunity to ask questions.

I don’t see anything bad to ask the teacher everything that is not clear, even if you think your questions are stupid. The same applies to any client you will work with (if you’re in business).

5. Split all work into sections

It really helps to focus and understand where to start. It also works in life: no matter how ambitious and huge goals you have, break them down into small goals. In this way, you will arrive at the final destination step by step, reaching small manageable goals.

6. Plan what to write and when to write

I know some don’t like to plan and write everything that comes to mind. I think this is not rational. You can save time with a plan.

Make a plan for each section — what will you write about. If you don’t know what to write about, research your topic and take notes. Decide how many words to allocate to the different sections of the work. Here is a useful table for essays I took from Nottingham Trent University (PDF):

Then think about the time when to write each part, taking into account the deadline.

For example, I write the title of the section in Google Doсs and then I put notes briefly.

7. Don’t forget to reference when writing

If you study for the first time in foreign programs or you write an academic paper for the first time, the essential thing you need to know is references. Any statement, opinion, criticism or research must be referenced from authoritative sources.

We use APA referencing (American Psychological Association). This means that in the body of the paper, it is necessary to use the in-text citation for sources you are referring to and at the end of the essay — use the reference list.

What to do if you want to write about your experience?

Well, you need to refer to it, so if your experience is not published anywhere, then I’m sorry. However, the following helps me. I know how it should be based on my experience, and probably someone wrote about it. I do the opposite. I write what I know, and then I find research or articles to support my points. It’s a good trick but doesn’t always work, though.

8. Check your writing afterwards

Once you finished, check the spelling by reading again on the logic and errors. The logic and sequence of sentences are fundamental.

If you are not confident about your English — check it through Grammarly or give someone you trust to read.

9. Always write in the cloud

It’s terrible when you write something, and at some point, a crash happens. Therefore, I always write in Google Docs. In addition, Docs is always available from any device. I can add something at work. Tables, images and everything else can also be stored in Google Drive.

It’s important to write everything with the right font and size from the beginning so that when you transfer to Word, the style is saved.

10. Submit in advance

It’s also quite obvious here, although I myself once submitted everything at the last moment. Some files weigh a lot, and usually, one hour before the deadline, the server is overloaded. Plan the finish and make sure there is time to upload your work without a rush.

I wrote this post when I turned 28 and want to keep it in English as well.

I remembered myself 18 years old. I was a year in Moscow where I moved after high school. I studied at the 2nd year my bachelor program at Moscow Power Engineering Institute. I was interested in self development, read Robert Kiyosaki, Napoleon Hill, and Ayn Rand, watched The Secret — overall I was a full set of youthful maximalism.

I was promoting a project that was supposed to be a revolution of instant messengers with built-in online games. I returned from my first trip to Europe, where I studied English in the language school in Malta with my friend. There appeared the first ideas about how I want to travel in the future — combining travel with some other activities like learning courses or volunteering. There were a lot of plans and hopes ahead.

I remember then, I wondered that probably someone already wrote letters to himself 18-year-old after some time. Shared his accumulated wisdom with the younger generation. Told lifehacks how one could jump to a higher level bypassing the typical this age mistakes. But I was naive. There was practically no material on this topic back in 2008. No one shared it just like that on forums, on LiveJournal or then still young social networks. Now I understand that nobody needs it. 18-year-old don’t ask you about tips, how to use time efficiently, or what to do and so on. And no one is going to share it — everyone is very busy and few people reflect on the past years. It was a period of growing up, which should go the way it went. This is a necessary stage of life, through which everything goes its own way, learning from its own mistakes.

So, if I were now asked to give advice to my 18-year-old self, these would be the following 3 tips:

1. Enjoy student life. I had wonderful student years and good friends. It was a difficult, but amusing and fun time. We studied a lot, didn’t sleep at night doing assignments and coursework, but at the same time, we didn’t forget to have a good rest. There were parties, walks in Moscow at night, many different activities and so much fun. I remember our traditions — sauna on Wednesdays and poker nights on Saturdays. If someone studied at technical universities and lived in uni campus, he knows what it is. It was its own school of life, interesting and priceless.
2. Appreciate those who are close not only in difficult but also in happy moments. When the university ends, everyone will begin another stage of life, which will completely absorb, change the social circle, interests, places, cities, and maybe even the country of residence. But close and dear friends always remain, despite the changes. It is very important not only to take but also to give in any relationship. Friendship requires attention and nourishment. You need to be able to forgive insults. True friendships, through time-tested trials, can give, perhaps, more than you can imagine. But they must be earned.
3. There are no magic pills that will solve all your problems. No one will take care of your future for you. Everything that happens to you today counts: what you read, watch, who you hang out with, what do you do, what do you think about. Everything will certainly be laid in your future. At the same time, it is necessary to know the measure and understand your boundaries in everything. In diligent study and work, in relation to money, to parties, in communication with people, in leisure activities. At this age it is difficult to clearly understand your goals, you do not always understand what you want from life. But do not lose hope and faith. I have always believed that you can do better and tried to achieve what I wanted. And this belief in the best and believe in myself helped and still helps me move on. We limit ourselves and the sooner we realize this, the faster the changes in our lives will begin.

It is a pity that I didn’t write a letter to myself 10 years back. Would love to read it now. Last February I began a good tradition of letters of the future. I write a letter to future me describing what is happening and the goals set for the year. A year after I read and realize what has changed, what has been achieved, what is not, and think over plans for the next year. Such a kind of check-point in the middle between birthdays.

Истории, родившиеся в путешествии с рюкзаком от Карибского моря до Гвадалахары в декабре 2017 – феврале 2018 г.

3920 км на роскошных креслах и твердых сиденьях автобусов, в тесненьких минивенах «collectivo», в салоне машины, в багажнике пикапа, с местными на BlaBlaCar, автостопом и одним перелетом обратно.

Рикардо и маршрут

Вылет в Канкун был из Дюссельдорфа и так как там живет одногруппник Артём, я решил навестить его и прилететь на пару дней раньше. Артём позвал меня на рождественскую вечеринку Secret Santa, где я познакомился с Рикардо из Мексики. Рикардо доктор. Несколько лет назад он прилетел с женой из Мехико Сити, которая вместе с Артёмом работает в Henkel.

Знаете бывают такие моменты, когда в нужное время в нужном месте?Пожалуй, если бы не Рикардо, я бы построил свой маршрут иначе. В своё время он изрядно изъездил свою страну и дал мне невероятное количество советов. Мой Google Maps был весь истыкан сохраненными местами от восточного до западного побережья Мексики. Первоначально я даже и не думал, что проеду большинство из них. Мой план был довольно простой — на момент планирования поездки, я работал под контрактом фултайм и намеревался засесть на восточной пенинсуле Карибского моря с периодическими выездами по выходным. По стечению обстоятельств буквально перед вылетом завершился контракт и я решил,что это знак немного передохнуть в работе и отправиться в путь, как во времена бекпекерства по Юго-Восточной Азии в 2014–2015 году. Таким образом родилась идея проехать с рюкзаком по Мексике с Восточного побережья Карибского моря до Западного Тихого океана и далее на север.

Юкатан

Первые 2 недели я провел на полуострове Yucatan, на котором располагаются два штата — Quintana Roo и собственно сам Yucatan. Пожалуй самое популярное направление Мексики с его туристическим центром в Канкуне. Канкуну я благодарен за 3 вещи — за его транспортный хаб для дешевых переездов и перелетов, за встречу с каучсерферами и за Marquesitas

На встрече каучсерферов я познакомился с ребятами, которые зарядили энергией проехаться по побережью Карибского моря до красивейшего места Laguna de Bacalar. Именно там я решил, что проеду всю Мексику по земле и через 2 месяца вернусь на самолете обратно. Со многими из ребят мы еще пересекались случайно в пути. Увидеть их было также приятно, как встретить старых знакомых после долгой разлуки.

В целом Юкатан невероятно красивое место с белыми пляжами, лагунами, сенотами, своеобразной флорой и фауной, вкуснейшей едой и добрыми людьми. Мне кажется прекрасно начинать путешествие именно с этого региона. Особенно отмечу 3 места в Юкатане — Tulum, Laguna Bacalar и колониальный испанский город Valladolid.

Tulum

Это хипстерские тусовки, те самые белоснежные пляжи Карибского моря из картинок тревел гайдов и международные фестивали (например, Boiler Room, где выступал замечательный Nicola Cruz).

Недалеко от Тулума можно поснорклить с Карибскими рыбками и морскими черепахами среди живых кораллов. Пожалуй, одно из любимейших мест Юкатана, где происходит настоящее единение с морем и его обитателями.

Laguna Bacalar

Мы ехали втроём в автобусе из Тулума до Лагуны Бакалар. Я, британка Риа и Феликс из Бельгии.

«Знаешь где тут остановиться?» – спросил Феликс, выходя из автобуса.

Я не знал, но многие рекомендовали мне хостел Blue Monkey на берегу лагуны. Я предложил ребятам пойти вместе. К счастью, когда мы пришли оставалось ровно 3 места: два в палатке и один в номере. Весь остальной хостел был полностью забронирован. Забавно, что все были не против остаться в палатке. Почему-то никто не хотел идти в номер, а зря, потому что в те дни пришёл циклон и температура опустилась настолько, что перед сном, чтобы не замёрзнуть мы отогревались ромом, привезённым Феликсом из Кубы.

Риа на следующий день уехала на фестиваль в Гватемалу, а с Феликсом мы еще не раз пересекались в путешествии в разных местах Мексики.

Молчаливые встречи рассвета, хостел из школьного автобуса на берегу и бездонный Black Cenote на каяке — воспоминания о голубой лагуне близь границы Мексики и Белиза.

Valladolid

Небольшой колониальный городок с красивым названием Вайадолид находится в самом центре Юкатана. Здесь нет красивых пляжей Карибского моря или высоких гор, как в центральной Мексике. Но я остался здесь почти на неделю, вместо планированных 2 дней.

Город сразу влюбил в себя уютностью, душевностью и близким расположением ко многим красивым местам в округе. Было приятно неспешно исследовать узкие улочки, проезжать километры на велосипеде, проводить вечера с другими путешественниками в скрытом от людей уютном хостеле.

И на самом деле такое разнообразие мест в одном встречается редко.

Рио Лагартос. Розовое озеро с крокодилами, уникальными птицами в перемешку с прилетевшими на зимовку из других стран, и знаменитыми фламинго.

Красивейшие сеноты. Своеобразные провалы в грунте, наполненные водой. Это уникальное явление можно встретить по всему Юкатану, но особенно их много в районе Вайадолида. Что может быть лучше, чем освежиться в водах сенот среди жаркого дня?

Автостопом по дороге, где ожидалось ограбление

Через неделю после Бакалара я добрался до Мериды, и в известном там хостеле Nomadas случайно встретил Феликса. Он приехал сюда двумя днями ранее и уже собирался уезжать. Мы обменялись новостями за неделю и дороговорились встретиться уже в Паленке, штате Чиапас.

Паленке – это старый город Майа. На текущий момент он раскрыт только на 8% и остальная, большая часть города, скрыта непроходимыми джунглями. Но даже на эти 8% может уйти целый день, блуждая по пирамида и древним раскопкам. Ещё, если повезёт, можно встретиться с хозяином этих земель – чёрной пантерой. Феликсу повезло. Даже далеко не всем из местных удается застать хищника в его родных местах обитания.

Для меня Паленке был настоящим открытием. Я жадно изучал историю древних жителей Майа, взбирался на пирамиды, рассматривал наскальные рисунки и спрятанные саркафаги. Деревня Эль-Панчан, в которой я остановился, отлично дополняла атмосферой жизни в джунглях.

Если бы не Рождество, пожалуй, я бы остался ещё на несколько дней. Но на Рождество мы с другими бекпекерами, будучи ещё в Юкатане, договорились встретиться в столице Чиапаса – городе Сан Кристобаль Де Лас Касас. Этот город находится в горах, там относительно прохладно в это время года и можно даже встретить снег, поэтому является меккой для многих местных и приезжых для встречи Рождества.

Путь до Сан Кристобаля проходил через горы и джунгли. Дорога в 200 км занимает 5 часов на машине и почти весь световой день на автобусе. К тому же на автобусе необходимо было сделать пересадку. Поэтому мы решили добраться автостопом.

Первый час пути мы добирались в кузове пикапа, после чего пересели в комфортабельный седан мексиканского генерала в отставке. Насколько хватило нашего англо-испанского запаса слов (спанглиша), после небольшого разговора мы узнали про местные достопримечательности и опасные районы Мексики, которые желательно избегать. Через несколько часов мы благополучно добрались до Сан Кристобаля и были готовы к встрече Рождества.

Каково же было наше удивление, когда на следующий день девушка из хостела рассказала нам об ограблении на том же самом пути, что и проделали мы. Она добиралась на автобусе тем же днем и где-то посередине пути, вооруженые пистолетом грабители в масках остановили автобус и обчистили всех пассажиров. Видимо наше решение ехать автостопом было неслучайно. В целом хочу заметить, это был единственный опасный случай за 2 месяца путешествия по Мексике. Есть 5 штатов в центре и на севере страны, которые рекомендуют объезжать стороной (Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Colima, Michoacan и Guerrero). В остальном же это безопасная страна, с дружелюбными людьми, о чем расскажу в следующей истории.

Мексиканцы

От восточного побережья до западного, от юга до севера мне встречались на пути доброжелательные, приветливые, гостепреимные, верующие, чтящие традиции, весёлые, простые, любящие, трудолюбивые мексиканцы.

Пожалуй многие знают сообщество Каучсерфинга, где ты встречаешься с местными в любом городе мира, ходишь с ними на события, живёшь, ешь, узнаёшь чем и как живет их родной город.

Мой первый хост в Мексике был в Плайе Дел Кармен. Мигель живет с девушкой в курортном городе и работает в аэропорту. Он переехал на заработки, так как в его родном штате уровень зарплаты ниже и работу найти не так просто. Два незабываемых момента связаны с Мигелем — когда мы ехали ночью по пустому хайвею и слушали саундтреки из фильма “Брат-2” и когда он разбил стекло на минивене, паркуясь у дома.

“Ну ничего, бывает. Пойдем лучше домой и поговорим про путешествия” — вот так просто можно относиться даже к не самым приятным ситуациям в жизни.

На утро мы позавтракали бесподобно вкусными энчеладасами, привезенными парнем на велосипеде, и я отправился далее в путь.

После этого я останавливался у Рауля в Мериде, у Сиси в Кампече, у Карен в Сан Кристобале, у Хеки в Пуэрто Эксондидо и у Алехандры в Мехико – практически в каждом посещенном штате. Каждый хост незабываем и интересен своей историей. Я люблю слушать и узнавать других людей, видимо ещё и поэтому мне нравится Каучсерфинг. Всем рекомендую и путешествовать, и хостить путешественников. Это незабываемый опыт, который меняет тебя.

Города Мексики

И последнее, чем хотелось бы поделиться. За 2 месяца я проехал 17 городов в 9 штатах Мексики. Все они разнообразные и удивительные, курортные, индустриальные, маленькие Pueblo Magico и крупные как Districto Federal (так еще называют Мехико). Но что их всех объединяет это – очаровательность, обаятельность и атмосферность. Небольшие домики пастельной тональности со старой черепицей, потрясающий стрит арт, органично влившийся в стиль городов, колониальные церкви и соборы воемен испанских колонистов, разноцветные флажки pepilpicado, протянутые между домами.

Я четко помню контраст зимней Европы по возвращению. Как будто тебе включили черно-белый фильтр: не хватало красок, цветов, зелени, контрастности. Города Мексики навсегда останутся в памяти.

I've been to 50+ countries, and I'm often asked to give advice, suggest Apps or websites that help me travel. This post is to collect them and keep them in one place. It will be updated as new ones appear.

Apps

If conditionally divide the Travel Apps in my iPhone by application functionality, we'll get the following list:

1. Transport — Skyscanner, Aviasales (flights aggregator), Kiwi.com (flights aggregator), BlaBlaCar (carpooling service around the world), GoEuro (buses and trains in Europe), FlixBus (Western Europe's bus company), BusRadar (bus aggregator in Europe), AppInTheAir (flight assistant, push up notifications and more)
2. Accommodation — Airbnb, Hotellook (hotels aggregator), Booking.com (Genius Traveler status gives you discounts), Agoda.com (some options are not in Booking.com or the same, but cheaper), Hostelworld
3. Other — Google Maps, Maps.Me (best offline maps), Foursquare (to find best places in the area: cafes, sightseeings, coworking, etc.), TripAdvisor (I rarely use this, because my opinion rarely coincides with the majority about the ratings, perhaps, except for the pizzeria number 1 in Lecco just north of Milan), Wikiloc (offline routes around the world, convenient for cycling), Couchsurfing (locals + events + place to stay), Been (visited countries map), Grabr (overseas shop products with international P2P delivery)
4. Digital nomads lifestyle — Nomadbase (useful app for remote workers with a chat), MovingNomads (explore cities and get tips from real nomads)
5. Travel apps for New Zealand — CamperMate (all campsites in NZ and Australia), Gaspy (aggregates the cost of gasoline and finds the cheapest or nearest gas station), Transit (buses and taxis inside cities).

I always make a new folder for the new country, download local apps, and delete them when leaving.

Useful websites for travellers

Not all services have applications. And for those that have, sometimes it's more convenient to look through the site. Here is the list:

▪️ Nomadlist.com is the coolest digital nomads' service. City rating, average housing prices, average WiFi speed, best coworking, secure chat and forum, etc.

▪️ Numbeo.com — a comparison of countries and cities in the cost of living.

▪️ Goeuro.com is a transport aggregator in Europe. It is convenient to choose, but sometimes cheaper to buy directly from transport companies' websites.

▪️ Economycarrentals.com — car rental aggregator. I almost always use it (both in Europe and Asia, never used in America or Oceania tho).

▪️ Booking hotels are easier on Booking.com. You can also save your booking in PDF for visa centres and customs' needs.

▪️ Kiwi.com — it's great to look for non-standard flight tickets: just set the radius from where you take off and the radius where you want to fly. Service selects possible options. After searching on Kiwi, it is cheaper to buy on Skyscanner or Aviasales.

▪️ By the way, with the travel partner program travelpayouts.com you'll get % for purchases/bookings from affiliate links. There are many services, such as Booking.com, Rentalcars.com and others. After accumulating income, you can withdraw to your PayPal (from $50).

▪ ️New Zealand travel websites: Journey Planner (helps to plan public transportation in Auckland), Intercity (the biggest bus chain in NZ), Skip Bus (low-cost north island's bus chain), TransferCar (all car relocations around NZ where you can rent a car for $1), imoova (another car relocations aggregator in NZ, Australia, USA and Europe)

How do I plan my future trips?

Globally, I think about where I want to go and explore how I can get there. Often I look at flight tickets and build routes taking into account various discounts. After tickets, I am looking for accommodation. If everything suits my plans — I book.

So, long story short Where do I want → How to get? → Cheap tickets → Where to live → Book!

How do I rent accommodation? Where do I work in travels?

Apartments are most often booked through Airbnb, sometimes through Facebook groups for specific locations. If I arrive for a long time (from a month), then I book a guesthouse, hostel or Airbnb for 2–3 days and then look for a place to live "offline". Almost everywhere are groups on Facebook like Rent a room + City (e.g., Rent a room Barcelona).

I prefer to work from home but for sure love a cafe or coworking vibes for people and the atmosphere. There are many cosy cafes with free high-speed WiFi in large cities—for example, Black Remedy in Barcelona with tasty and inexpensive coffee and a perfect working atmosphere.

Also, I work from libraries — they usually have free WiFi, cosy space and cool smart chics :) Check out the Auckland City Library near Queen Street in New Zealand.

How do I travel with lowcost airlines if you need to pay extra for luggage there?

Usually, I travel only with my 40 l backpack. Almost all low-cost airlines have carry-on baggage up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm and weight up to 7-8 kg.

It is not allowed to carry large metal objects, for example, pegs from a tent, scissors, or knives. Liquids with a volume of each package over 100 ml and a total volume of 1 l are also not allowed with hand luggage. The travel kit is very helpful — usually, there are several 100 ml jars with transparent packaging (many airlines have requirements to transport liquids in a transparent package). You can grab one in the nearest pharmacy.

What travel lifehacks do I use?

It's important to have copies of all documents on your email or the cloud. This will help in case if something happens to the original documents.

I try to avoid staying after families and retired people in a queue at the security lines. They are usually the slowest ones.

Safety first in any countries: do not leave your valuables unattended, do not check them in, do not stagger after sunset on unknown areas, read about the characteristics of each country (for example, you shouldn't take Buddha copy or even a souvenir out or import pornography in Thailand).

It's better to arrive earlier than what is written in the schedule — even in Germany where punctuality is very much appreciated, buses can come or go earlier than planned.

It's always useful to have hotel bookings, bookings for return tickets or tickets to a third country with you. And some cash just in case. Don't hold all your money on one card or in the same bank account. Don't put all your eggs in one basket ;)

Wherever possible, check-in in advance. It helps to save time and money. For example, RyanAir asks 50 euros for registration and check-in at the airport.

Have safe and fun travels! ✌️

This is because their visa policy allows you to stay in the country for up to 2 years without leaving, just extending your visa every 2 months (which you can, actually, assign to the agent and forget about this problem).

Practically most countries of the world have the right to come to the Philippines without a visa for 30 days. Citizens of Brazil and Israel have the right to stay as long as 59 days for free. If you look closely, you can count on your fingers the number of countries that actually need a visa.

After 2 weeks in the Philippines, you need to contact the immigration office, pay 3130 Filipino pesos (about $ 60) and you will have a visa for the next 29 days within 15–20 minutes. Total the first 2 months cost $ 60 and a couple hours of your time.

The first time I extended the visa on the island of Boracay, where a very comfortable and pleasant office with a leather sofa and almost exclusive service. The second time — in Tagbilaran, on the island of Bohol. There is a more modest office there, there were many old Europeans and Americans with young Filipinos, but on the whole, the process is the same, maybe a little longer. Addresses of all extension offices can be found on the website of the Philippines Immigration Service.

The next 2 months cost about 4900 pesos plus a mandatory Tourist ID card of $50. This card will be your official document in the Philippines. You can open a bank account or get different benefits as a resident. Once done and can enjoy the country further.

The following extensions cost from 2400 to 4500 pesos, depending on the term.

If you are bored, you can fly to neighbouring countries and back — thus renewing your visa for a new free 30 days, at the same time dispel. That is what I did after the first 2 months. This way you can still save on the ID card because it turns out that you stayed only 2 months, and then drove again and the counter of staying in the country was reset.

In general in the Philippines, about 7000 islands. Many of them are completely different, you can live on each month and after 2 years collect 24 islands. Sounds tough but worth. I lived, actually, mostly in 2 islands in my 4 months there plus in Cebu and in Manila for about two weeks.

Thus, to live in the Philippines up to 2 years is quite possible and not as difficult as in other South-East Asian countries. Renewals are quick, though not cheap. Renew your visa every 2 months and enjoy.

Sri Lanka, though an island, but relatively large, comparing it with other popular-destination islands in Asia

The population is 21 million people, but most of them are concentrated on the western and south-western side. This is so much for this area, so buses and trains are usually always packed.

75% of the inhabitants are Sinhalese. They have their own language and script. The Sinhalese language is interesting, but the rules for putting words in sentences are tricky. For the local needs is not difficult to learn a few expressions. Although the majority speak English, the Sinhalese are very happy when they hear the native language from foreigners.

We rented a house for a couple of months at one Sinhala family in Hikkaduwa. This is a rather interesting intercultural experience. Almost every day we had conversations with the owners (their house was nearby) on everyday issues or with congratulations of local holidays and treats of national dishes (they made Hops for the breakfast, we made pancakes for them).

Munidasa, the head of the family, is already retired and spends all day in a backyard. He often exchanged phrases with me in Sinhalese. My knowledge was limited to 5–6 phrases so he tried to teach me a new word every day.

After few weeks of living near Munidasa and watching his life and all his large family, I made the interview with him in the style of Esquire’s Rules of Life for the Russian magazine “My Planet”.

Some excerpts from the interview

The misunderstanding between people and when one side has more power than another one — these are the reasons for a war.

Я общался с разными людьми из разных стран и спрашивал их об отношении к приложениям для знакомств. И я понял, наверное, очевидную вещь – у всех разные цели в приложении, но что самое интересное от страны к стране это тоже различно. Например, в Мексике Тиндер – это что-то вроде Каучсерфинга – люди используют его для того, чтобы найти компанию в кино или на вечеринку. И цель найти партнера абсолютно не первоочередная.

В России, насколько я понял, но могу ошибаться, Тиндер – это средство найти пару для отношений. Но сам принцип, который заложен в этом инструменте, неправильный. Поиск партнера происходит прежде всего по следующим атрибутам – фотография, возраст и имя. Чтобы прочитать биографию необходимо сделать еще одно действие – кликнуть на значок инфо, что по правилам юзабилити говорит о том, что это действие не самое главное. Т.е в основном люди выбирают других людей по фотографиям.

Я считаю, что Тиндер и подобные ему приложения должны предоставлять выбор пользователю, что для него главное – фотография или биография. Я не представляю, как можно искать партнера по жизни только по фотографиям. А ведь многие так и пишут: «я ищу долгосрочные отношения». Мое решение – это предоставить пользователю переключить первый экран на биографию с фотографией, для тех кому это важно.

Мне хватило одного дня, чтобы понять, что данный способ знакомств абсолютно не для меня. Это огромная трата времени, но что самое интересное, что люди внешне все плюс минусы похожи, особенно от страны к стране. Но для меня главное – это человек, его интересы, его личная история, мысли, чем занимается, ценности и многое другое.

Я абсолютно уверен, что многие со мной не соглашатся или у них другие цели в этих приложениях. И это абсолютно нормально.

Я консервативен. Мне нравится знакомиться с людьми вживую, имея какие-то общие интересы. Ведь, если ты пришел на какое-то мероприятие и встретил там кого-то, как минимум у вас уже есть общая тема для разговора.

А что для вас важно? Пользуетесь ли подобными приложениями?

Недавно мы со Стефаном задались вопросом — насколько выгодно иметь свой автомобиль для ежедневных поездок на работу или других поездок внутри МКАД? В качестве альтернативы интересно было сравнить эти расходы с каршерингом. Вот что получилось.

Своя машина

Затраты на примере Ауди А3 (122 л.с., 2013 г.в.) в Москве из расчета на год:

• 16 000 ₽ страховка
• 5000 ₽ ТО
• 12 000 ₽ хранение колес и шиномонтаж
• 3200 ₽ мойка
• 900 ₽ парковка у дома
• 5200 ₽ парковка в Москве (в среднем)
• 3050 ₽ налог

Итого 45 350 ₽

Постоянные расходы выходят в 45 350 ₽ в год или 872 ₽ в неделю. Если я езжу 3 дня в неделю, на поездку получается 290 ₽ с копейками.

Расход бензина в городском цикле выходит 7л/100 км. Я заправляю АИ-98 в Лукойле за 43.95 ₽/л — получается, что я трачу 3 ₽/1 км

Средняя скорость в Москве в будние дни по данным Яндекса 37 км/ч. В среднем я трачу на дорогу 20 минут в день. Это значит я проезжаю 12.3 км и на бензин расходую 38 ₽

Складываем все постоянные расходы на поездку с расходами на бензин и получаем:

Мои расходы на поездку на своем авто 329 ₽ или 16 ₽ в минуту

Теперь посмотрим, что предлагает каршеринг и сравним, что выходит выгоднее?

Каршеринг

В Москве всего 15 операторов каршеринга (на 4 мая 2018 года). Полный список и хронологию появлений можно прочитать по ссылке выше.

Рассмотрим самые популярные, какие цены и автомобили они предлагают:

Делимобиль

Цена 3 ₽/мин в утренние часы с 6:00 до 12:00 и 7 ₽/мин в остальное время. На данный момент, имеют самый большой парк авто в Москве и самые выгодные цены в утренние часы.

Из автомобилей предлагают Hyundai Solaris и Renault Captur

BelkaCar

Базовый тариф за Ford Fiesta 7 ₽/мин, KIA Rio 8 ₽/мин и KIA Rio X-Line 9 ₽/мин.

BelkaBlack предлагает Mercedes-Benz CLA и Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 за 14 ₽/мин.

YouDrive

Первый федеральный оператор каршеринга с интересной геймификацией с бонусами и уровнями внутри.

Большинству людей на 1 уровне доступны стандартные Smart ForTwo и Smart ForFour за 10 ₽/мин.

Также используя YouDrive можно заказать автомобили Datsun каршеринга Car5 за 5 ₽/мин в любое время суток.

Рассмотрев даже 3 основных каршеринга, видим, что разброс большой и по предлагаемым авто и по ценам за их использование

Добавил все это в Гугл.Таблицы и сравнил с затратами на поездки на моем авто. Вот, что получилось:

Подводя итог

Получается с моим ритмом езды и расходами на бензин, мне выгоднее использовать любой из рассмотренных каршерингов. Даже премиальные авто BelkaBlack или YouDrive будут для меня дешевле, чем свой автомобиль.

При этом, конечно, данный расчет условен тем, что мы используем авто только для поездок внутри МКАД и считаем, что машины каршеринга доступны в любую минуту в пешей доступности. При этом мы заблаговременно считает, что личный автомобиль уже имеется и нет необходимости его покупать и ремонтировать.

Цель этого исследования была посчитать затраты на минуту использования и сравнить между собой.

А что если ездить чаще?

Мы рассчитали как меняется стоимость использования автомобилем от количества минут, проводимых ежедневно в поездке, и количества дней в неделе, когда необходима машина.

Таким образом выходит — чем чаще использовать авто и дольше ездить, тем выгоднее выходит каждая минута использования своим автомобилем
