This led musicians (like <a href="https://crypto.com/nft/drops-event/80b2e021d4cbfbc43789db5377ecf1ed">Snoop Dogg</a>) and artists to give companies permission to create products for them, with the story mostly ending there. That’s where Genuino comes in as a market disruptor.</p><p>With the standard NFT platform model it’s hard to distinguish fact from fiction. Genuino’s founders <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabrielebernasconi/">Gabriele Bernasconi</a> and <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/eleonoramulas/">Eleonora Mulas</a> are changing that.</p><p>“Our storytelling comes from the post-truth world where consumers are bombarded with information and they can’t understand what’s fake and what’s real,” said Gabriele. “We wanted to strengthen the brand-consumer relationship.”</p><p>Genuino is taking it to the next level, with features unlike any other NFT marketplace. With Genuino, NFTs aren’t a product in themselves, instead they are a tool that can build trust with consumers and engagement with fans — their products are built on top of the NFT.</p><p>Genuino’s platform allows consumers to collect digital assets, but with an added physical element — through items or fan experiences. It’s how the company is combining its two souls: technology and creativity. This allows for the minting of an NFT, or a unique digital representation of that jersey sold on the Genuino marketplace to Fiorentina fans. With cheering in the stadium on hold due to Covid-19, fans can still feel that energy by buying a match-worn jersey on the Genuino platform. The application for artists and musicians is a little different while still retaining the focus to amplify fan engagement and strengthen a consumer’s connection with their favorite brands and experiences.</p><p>Genuino wasn’t even planning to enter the music space. When an Italian musician and personality heard what the company had cooked up, he knew he had to get involved. This led to a partnership among Genuino, the musician, and the Italian artist. The NFTs have an element of gamification added for an innovative form of fan engagement. Scanning the internet to find one from Brazilian footballer Ricardo Kaká’s time with AC Milan, Gabriele became frustrated. It wasn’t easy to establish that the jerseys he was looking for were worn by Kaká during AC Milan’s run to the UEFA Champions League title in 2007. Search for ‘Ricardo Kaká Match Worn Jersey’ in Google and you can understand Gabriele’s frustration.</p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/738/1*4ahYyIBQo96bypmaTf1EWg.jpeg" /></figure><p>Gabriele and his co-founder <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/eleonoramulas/">Eleonora</a> wanted to solve this problem: in the $15 billion <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/foul-ball-did-nj-man-get-duped-buying-100k-bogus-n1019676">sports memorabilia market over 50% of transactions are counterfeit according to the FBI</a>. This means there are billions of dollars of uncaptured revenue from teams because fans can be duped into buying counterfeit merchandise. Considering team revenue streams have been ravaged in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, teams need new instruments to ensure they capture memorabilia revenue in both the primary and secondary markets.</p><p>To tackle this issue, Genuino’s first mission was to re-model the concepts of their whitepaper from certifying food supply chain to sports memorabilia. With angel funding secured, in mid-2019, they hired developers and worked feverishly to build their prototype certification system. Thereby, the responsibility for providing trust is relieved from the company and the third party making the architecture of the system the element of trust for the consumer.</p><p>By December 2019, Eleonora and Gabriele tested and validated their proof-of-concept protocol which uses a combination of smart-sensoring, IoT sensors, and smart contracts in the form of Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to certify jerseys worn by ACF Fiorentina (Italian Serie A football) players. The protocol allows for the minting of an NFT, a unique digital representation of a physical item, i.e. the match-worn jersey.</p><p>Building an anti-counterfeiting product was not their only goal, however.             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*OQoFu3RCLSM4XNN4n_7vFQ.jpeg" /></figure><p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabrielebernasconi/">Gabriele Bernasconi</a> and <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/eleonoramulas/">Eleonora Mulas</a> wanted to bring authentic Italian cuisine to the desks of their colleagues in Dubai, but they ended up creating more than <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasta_con_le_sarde">pasta con le sarde</a> or <a href="https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schiacciata_(gastronomia)">schiacciata</a>. Spending countless hours scouring ingredients at the market, cooking in the evening, and preparing meals until the early morning they invented something else in the kitchen — Genuino.</p><p>Genuino, an innovative Italian start-up, is empowering brands to tell their stories through digital collectibles (NFTs) backed by certified physical assets. Building narratives is part of <a href="https://medium.com/genuino-world/opposites-attract-genuino-uses-its-dna-to-disrupt-the-blockchain-market-4bae7096b20f">Genuino’s DNA</a>, but like all passionate brands, they have their own story to tell.</p><p>Brought to Dubai for separate work assignments in 2016, Genuino co-founders gravitated to each other as any compatriots in a foreign place might. Gabriele was managing Retail Brand Marketing for <a href="https://www.nike.com/">Nike</a> and <a href="https://www.vfc.com/brands">VF Corp Brands</a> at <a href="https://www.gmg.com/">Gulf Marketing Group</a>, and Eleonora was leading the business-class customer experience for Emirates Airlines.</p><p>They promptly devoted themselves to solving a problem that had been a mutual axis of frustration: the particularly noxious food in Dubai, especially ‘take-away’ food ordered at lunchtime. Approaching the problem as only food-obsessed Italians can, they sought to shatter the misconception that ready-to-eat meals are tasteless and profane.</p><p>Seeking to ‘make life better at the office’ Gabriele presented himself with a chef&#39;s apron and pitched the concept of bringing authentic Italian cuisine to his co-workers. Whether the idea enamored his colleagues, or if they were simply tired of eating awful food, what began as small a quorum rapidly turned into a legitimate business creating 70 meals a day.</p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*zsccLwiuulF1tv7FXr3KNw.jpeg" /><figcaption>Gabriele Ready to pitch his Ready-to-Eat meals Concept to his colleagues</figcaption></figure><p>Spending eight hours after their day jobs preparing lunches for the following day, the duo knew it was an unsustainable operation. It was during this brief, but intense, period that Gabriele and Eleonora discovered another passion: blockchain, and blockchains’ ability to improve the traceability and authenticity of food ingredients in supply chains.</p><p>Armed with the shared vision that blockchain would change the world, they bolstered their knowledge base becoming blockchain experts, as well as evangelists, advising start-ups issuing ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings) in 2017.</p><p>Through this process, they realized blockchain was simply one ingredient in a more complex recipe. Establishing the Genuino Whitepaper with the support of <a href="https://www.ey.com/it_it">Ernst &amp; Young Italia</a> in May 2018 the Genuino manifesto communicated that brands can establish more intimate relationships with their customers by using blockchain as an enabler, but not the centerpiece.</p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*kLqnJtwNrWxfYN2loI7mDQ.jpeg" /><figcaption>Gabriele and Eleonora working through core concepts of their Whitepaper</figcaption></figure><p>The Whitepaper facilitated Genuino’s acceptance to the <a href="https://pulselab.io/">Pulse Lab Blockchain Accelerator</a> program in New York City in 2018, where Gabriele says they “found their rhythm.”</p><blockquote>“The Pulse Lab opportunity was the first-time people looked at us normally when we spoke about blockchain,” says Gabriele. “Speaking on panels with hundreds of people, it was a ‘Wow’ moment and the first time we really felt what we were doing was special.”</blockquote><p>With momentum from the accelerator program, they received the <a href="https://medium.com/genuino-world/genuino-awarded-with-the-gaetano-marzotto-price-82bc3f427475">2018 Marzotto special prize given by Ernst &amp; Young</a> in the fall of 2018.</p><figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*R7S8zIaY-tcZN6V4LCqyFg.jpeg" /><figcaption>Marzotto Prize Awards 2018</figcaption></figure><p>Now they were really cooking, but bootstrapped, it was time to find investors. They turned to the multi-billion-dollar sports market and aimed to disrupt it by ameliorating one of its major pain points.</p><blockquote>“Blockchain is a technology that is going to revolutionize the world, but in order to revolutionize the world it needs mass adoption. Mass adoption will not start from a Mom, but it’s going to start from somewhere that really needs that, “ says Gabriele.“From my time at Nike, I knew that a huge issue in the sports industry was counterfeiting and that we could really be on the frontier with sports.”</blockquote><p>Supported by a group of angels, the twosome now had the resources to build their <a href="https://youtu.be/DS_XxHzm7Yg">Proof-of-Concept blockchain-powered certification protocol applied to physical assets which they tested and validated</a> with an early partner, <a href="https://www.acffiorentina.com/en">ACF Fiorentina</a>.</p><p>More than five years ago two Italians in Dubai created ready-made food that actually tastes good. Merging these two parts is also our mission, connecting the digital and physical worlds. We’d say we are that rare breed of precise forward-thinkers, especially when it comes to blockchain, product certification, NFTs, and data.</p><p>Our technical side, the square in our logo, comes from our expertise in engineering, technology, and mathematics with a robust team of young talent. It’s led by the structured mind of <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/dan-rusnac-6830a1121/"><strong>Dan Rusnac</strong></a> who has coded blockchain since the genesis block. Along with him is <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/menini-davide-a8507b25/"><strong>Davide Menini</strong></a> who has more than 20 years of experience in development and analysis, working for multinational software companies, including as Bizerba’s head of software development.</p><p>Our creativity, the circle in our logo, is our passion for finding solutions among chaos, which pushes us every day to shoot for the moon. Genuino is empowering sports fans, collectors, and crypto-savvy consumers to <strong>collect digital </strong>and<strong> own physical </strong>sports memorabilia through the creation of certified digital collectibles (<a href="https://a16z.com/2021/04/02/nfts-readings-resources/">NFTs</a>) backed by real assets.</p><p>The investment round was led by institutional investors and <a href="https://www.cdpventurecapital.it/cdp-venture-capital/en/home.page">CDP Venture Capital SGR</a> in partnership with <a href="https://www.thenetvalue.com/">The Net Value</a> accelerator of Cagliari, Sardinia. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS_XxHzm7Yg&amp;t=6s">Genuino integrates blockchain technology, smart sensors, and artificial intelligence to certify match-worn sports apparel</a> and other merchandise guaranteeing the authenticity of goods and eliminating the possibility of counterfeiting. <a href="https://www.investitalysim.it/">Invest Italy SIM</a> served as financial advisor for this transaction.</p><p>The new shareholders — CDP Venture Capital SGR and other private investors — join original early-stage investors, CombinatorZ SRL, Finbeauty SRL, Giorgio Spallarossa, and Filippo Codazzi. CDP Venture’s investment will be converted to equity following the launch of the next fundraising round.</p><blockquote>“The investment from CDP Venture Capital SGR and the co-investors will allow Genuino to complete and optimize product development, integrate the team, and validate our business model.
