Between a fluctuating economy and the high cost of living, the pressure to “make it” is immense. I get DMs every day from young people asking the same question: “How can I actually make money online without falling into ‘yahoo’ or ‘ritual’ shortcuts?”

Before we dive in, let’s clear one thing up: true passive income doesn’t exist at the start. You might hear people talk about making money while they sleep. To get to “passive,” you must first be incredibly active.
I’m not here to sell you a dream or a “get rich quick” scheme. I’m here to share what has actually worked for me. These are strategies that have earned me Naira and, more importantly, US Dollars. Even if you’re starting with zero capital and no audience, you can build wealth using any of these methods

So, let’s dive in.

1. Freelancing (High-Income Skills)

If I could beat my chest and recommend just one way to start, it’s freelancing. This is the most reliable way to earn in dollars as a Nigerian, right now. Here’s what you need to do; Master a Platform: Don’t just dabble. Master platforms like Upwork or Fiverr. There are people making 6 to 7 figures in dollars on these sites. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Once you’ve conquered Upwork, move to others like Contra, GoLance, or Fiverr. You don’t need to be a jack-of-all-trades. Just pick a specific, high-demand skill (like AI automation or copywriting) and become an expert.

2. Selling Digital Products
Many Nigerians are quietly making millions by selling digital assets. This is the closest you can get to a passive business model once it’s set up. To start earning with this method; first, solve a Pain Point. You can create templates, guides, or checklists that solve a real problem. Here’s a tip; use Selar to host your products. It’s beginner-friendly and handles local payments easily. If you aren’t a writer, you can buy PLR products. These are books or courses where the creator gives you the right to resell them as your own. When you want to go international, you can use Gumroad and drive traffic via TikTok or Instagram.

3. Content Creation

Content creation is powerful, but it’s often misunderstood. Consistency is the price of admission. You need to be consistent and hardworking to make substantial money here. Don’t spread yourself thin. Master one platform (like YouTube) before jumping to TikTok or Instagram. Also, you might need to have a second job until you are able to grow your brand into something sustainable. Never rely on brand deals for your basic survival (rent/food).

4. Consultation and Coaching
Don’t coach until you have results. People trust you when you have proof builds If you’re new, offer a “sponsored” discount. Tell people you are offering 10 slots at a lower price (sponsored by yourself!) to build your initial portfolio. Once you have results, Then you can sell your coaching and consulting services.

5. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing has a bad reputation because of “hustlers,” but it’s a legitimate way to earn by recommending tools you actually use. You can promote local apps like Piggyvest and Cowrywise, or use the Selar and Jumia affiliate programs. Share your honest reviews. The money starts small but compounds over time as your audience grows.

6. Local Side Hustles

Don’t ignore the reality around you. Sometimes, the best income is right in your neighborhood. For instance, you can offer photography services. You don’t even need to own a camera to start; you can rent high-end gear once you have a gig. Learn the technicals via apprenticeship or YouTube. Furthermore, don’t assume only international clients have money to afford your services. There are high-net-worth individuals and companies in Nigeria willing to pay well for quality service. Pitch them.

7. Investments
Saving just to keep money is a losing game due to inflation. It is much easier to work and earn your first million as a freelancer than it is to try and save your way to a million from a small allowance. Focus on increasing your income first. You should save to invest. Save toward a specific goal (e.g., buying equipment for your business). You can use Treasury Bills or mutual funds on apps like Piggyvest to let your money work for you.

Building wealth in Nigeria is tough. The secret isn’t having 100 different streams of income; it’s mastering one first. Start today with what you have. If all you have is a phone and a data plan, use them to learn a skill. Build a system around that skill, hire help when you can to avoid burnout, and then layer on the next stream. Don’t spread yourself thin. Focus. Execute. Scale.

Working remotely offers flexibility to get better opportunities with our skills in the global market. If you’re looking to work from home, travel while working, or even switch careers. One such opportunity is with JobDuck.

If you’re considering a career change, want to work in a different country, or feel underpaid in your current role, then JobDuck could be the solution you need.

What is JobDuck?

JobDuck is a recruitment company in the U.S. that connects individuals with remote job opportunities, specifically for U.S. legal firms.

They offer various roles, such as:

Legal Assistant

Executive Assistant

Receptionist

Billing Assistant

Case Manager

These are full-time positions, meaning you’ll need to work U.S. hours even though you’re based in South Africa, Peru, Columbia, Honduras, El Salvador, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, or Chile. It’s a great option for those who are willing to work odd hours for better pay, as you’ll be earning in U.S. dollars.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how to apply, what their requirements are, and some tips that will help you through their process.

The Job Duck’s Hiring Process

1. The first step is to submit your CV tailored for the specific job you’re interested in.

2. After screening your CV, they will invite you for an interview.

3. Then they will perform a background check on you. Your computer and internet speed should meet their technical requirements.

Minimum:
Intenet speed: 5 MBps for upload and 10 MBps for download.

Computer spec: i5 Core Processor, 8 GB of RAM, SSD storage, a webcam, and a microphone.

4. After passing the initial stages, you’ll undergo a one-week training session to prepare you for the job and familiarise you with their expectations.

5. Then you’ll be matched with a US-based employer. You’ll go through another interview with this employer. If all goes well, you’ll start your new job! If not, you’ll go back into the pool to be matched with another employer.

Let’s say you’re interested in applying for the executive assistant position. As a Nigerian, you can expect to earn around $900 to 1,500 (₦3 million) per month, depending on your skills and experience.

Photo by Daniel Chekalov on Unsplash

This role doesn’t require a lot of experience — just 6 months in a related field or a relevant degree. But even if you don’t have a degree, as long as you have the skills, you should still apply.

Even if you don’t have much experience, the key to success is tailoring your CV for the specific job you’re applying for and showcasing your skills.

Important Tips for Success

If you’re applying for an executive assistant role, focus on your organisational and communication skills.

JobDuck often hires for entry-level positions so you don’t need years of experience to get hired if you have the skills for the role.

The hiring process can take some time. They communicate regularly via email and WhatsApp.

Many people miss out on job opportunities simply because they don’t follow instructions. Pay close attention to every detail.

JobDeck isn’t just limited to hiring from the countries I listed. They recruit globally, and some of their roles are open to individuals from countries like Nigeria and more. However, if Nigeria isn’t on the list for a particular role, don’t hesitate to reach out to JobDuck directly. They encourage applicants to express interest, even if their country isn’t listed.

For more freelance and remote work opportunities, follow me here and on my channel

Without any skills? Sounds like a scam.” But hear me out. What if I told you there are legit ways to start earning cash online today, and they’re so simple you’ll wonder why you didn’t know about them sooner?

Stick with me because I’m about to break down five freelancing gigs you can offer right now, even if you have no clue what you’re doing. Trust me, these are so counterintuitive that you’ll be like, “Wait, that’s a thing?”

Let’s dive in.

Removing Image Backgrounds

screenshot from Fiverr site

Doesn’t it sound weird that people will pay you to click a button? Yep, that’s essentially what this is. Businesses and influencers need images without backgrounds all the time, and they’ll pay for it even though it’s ridiculously easy.

You don’t need Photoshop. You don’t need design skills. Just head to Canva, upload the image, and click “Background Remover.” Boom! Background gone.

Now go to Fiverr and look at all the people offering this service. They’re making money by literally clicking a button. Wild, right? You can do the same thing, and guess what? Clients are not going to ask if you’re a Photoshop pro. They just care about the results.

2. Creating SEO Reports

You might be wondering, “Isn’t SEO for tech geniuses?” Nope! You don’t need to know a single thing about Search Engine Optimization to offer this gig.

Here’s the secret: Use a tool like SEO Analyzer. When someone asks for a report, just type their website URL into the tool. In less than a minute, it spits out a detailed report. Download it and send it to them. Done.

And get this — it’s a 20+ page report that makes you look like a total expert. But all you did was copy and paste. Who knew pretending to be a genius could be this easy?

3. Designing HTML5 Ads

“I’m not a designer,” you say. Cool, neither am I. But you don’t need to be one to design ads for businesses. Why? Because tools like Bannersnack exist.

Here’s how it works:

1.	Pick a template.

2.	Drag, drop, and tweak some text or colors.

3.	Save the ad and send it to your client.

You’re just clicking around and moving stuff, yet businesses will happily pay you to create ads for their websites or Google campaigns. The best part? It looks like you spent hours designing when, in reality, you barely broke a sweat.

4. Fiverr Arbitrage

This one might blow your mind. You can make money by reselling someone else’s work.

Here’s the play:

1.	Find a cheap service on Fiverr — like logo design for $10.

2.	Post the same service on another site, like Upwork, for $50.

3.	When someone hires you, pay the Fiverr seller $10 to do the work.

You keep the $40 difference. You’re basically the middleman. It feels almost illegal how easy this is, but it’s completely legit. People have built entire businesses doing this, so why not you?

5. Commenting on Blogs

This might sound too simple to be true, but people will pay you to leave comments on blog posts. Here’s why: Blog comments help websites rank higher on Google (it’s an SEO thing). Business owners know this, but they don’t have time to comment themselves.

All you need to do is read a blog post, leave a thoughtful comment, and send proof to your client. That’s it. You’re getting paid to do something you probably already do for free when you’re doomscrolling on social media.

So, why haven’t you started yet?

I told you these ideas were counterintuitive. Who would’ve thought that removing image backgrounds or commenting on blogs could make you money? The truth is, most people overthink freelancing. They assume they need fancy skills or years of experience when, in reality, all you need is a little creativity and a willingness to try.

Here’s your action plan to start making easy money online:

1.	Pick one of these gigs.

2. Sign up on Fiverr or Upwork or any freelancing platform.

3.	Start offering your services.

You’ve got nothing to lose and potentially a lot to gain. So, what’s stopping you? Let me know which gig you’re trying out in the comments. I’m rooting for you!

Music Video Editor

You might think getting the top chart artiste to get you to edit their music video is a far-fetched dream but there are millions of music artistes across the world looking for you to edit their video. Network with music directors, DOPs, and label owners. Just shoot your shot, so you can get hired to create those fantastic transitions, epic color grading, and cut-to-beat frames. I enjoy editing music videos because it lets my creativity run unrestricted, has a shorter duration, and is well paid. This niche of video editing can give you long-term clients since artistes, directors, and label owners often work with the same editor from project to project.

2. Promotional Video Editor

Business owners understand that it takes money to make money, so they don’t mind spending it to stand out and reach their prospective clients. According to the team at Worldmetrics.org, Video ads are much more effective now than ever. Companies, tech startups, local restaurants would pay you to create and edit eye-catching promo videos to showcase their products or services.

3. Short-Form Content Editor

Under-60-second to 3-minute video content is massively consumed across social media, such as YouTube Shorts, TikTok videos, Instagram Reels, and Snapchat Spotlight. Alex Hormozi and Gary Vee are pacesetters in the quality and style of this content type. Brands across the gloss now pay freelance video editors to create these. They want you to make short-form videos that’s engaging and scroll-stopping.

4. YouTube Video Editor

YouTube pays youtubers who upload videos regularly. The good thing about this is that Youtubers in different niches won’t mind paying you a part of their payment if you offer value with a skill no youtuber can do without, that is, video editing. This translates to a steady source of work and money for you when most big YouTubers stick with you as an editor once they trust your capability to deliver excellence.

5. Online Course Video Editor

I got a couple of video editing gigs from a course creator in 2024. I can testify that editing long courses can be tedious but it’s pretty rewarding. Online courses sales have been increasing in recent times as e-learning platforms boom. So course creators need video editors to make money on Skillshare, Selar, Udemy, Coursera, or private membership courses.

6. Explainer Video Editor

Corporate explainer videos might not win you any awards, but they pay really well. Companies will often pay four-figure sums just for you to tweak templates. Easy money, right?

8. Fitness Video Editor

From gym workouts to app tutorials, the fitness industry is thriving. These projects can range from quick Instagram reels to fully-fledged fitness programs. Plus, it’s a niche that’s unlikely to slow down.

9. Fashion and Product Promo Editor

Ever seen those slick videos showcasing the latest sneakers or luxury dresses? Fashion brands need editors for Instagram promos, product launches, and everything in between.

10. Corporate Video Editor

This one’s straightforward but lucrative. You’ll edit interviews, talking-head videos, or event coverage for companies. It might not be the most exciting work, but the pay is worth it.

11. Sports Content Editor

Whether it’s football, boxing, or basketball, editing sports promos or athlete interviews can be incredibly exciting and rewarding. The sport industry is a cash cow, you get to have a piece when you work with the stakeholders. [apologies to the vegans reading this ;)]

12. Product Review Video Editor

Brands will send you products to review or showcase. Not only do you get paid for editing, but you might also get to keep some gadgets and gear. Isn’t that cool?

13. Personal Brand Video Editor

Think of it as a mix between YouTube and social media video editing. You’ll work closely with influencers or entrepreneurs to help them build their online presence across platforms.

14. Wedding Video Editor

Weddings are emotional, beautiful, and one of the highest-paying niches. Even if you’re not on-site filming, you can be hired remotely to edit those once-in-a-lifetime moments. It doesn’t require expert editing or VFX skills but you need to be creative.

15. Documentary or Event Video Editor

Documentary editing allows you to flex your storytelling muscles. While not as common as other niches, it’s deeply fulfilling work. You get to edit footage from charity galas to personal stories.

How to Get Started

Start small. Reach out to local businesses or creators. Build your portfolio. Platforms like LinkedIn, Behance, or even social media are goldmines for finding clients.

And don’t forget to charge what you’re worth. Remember, your skills save businesses time and elevate their brands, so don’t undersell yourself.

If this list fired you up, I’d love to hear which niche you’re eyeing. Let’s keep this conversation going. Your next big editing gig might just be one decision away.

These freelancers have made over $200,000 by offering their services to clients on the Upwork platform. So, if you’re trying to get your big break on Upwork in 2026, these key lessons from these freelancers might be what you need.

Here’s a breakdown of their top strategies that helped them scale their freelancing business:

Upsell Retainer-ship to Clients with One-off Projects

If a client approaches you for a one-time project, try to upsell them into a long-term retainer arrangement. When you offer ongoing services on Upwork, you can build a consistent income stream and strengthen client relationships.

2. Add Complementary Skills to Your Core Expertise

Freelancers who earn the most often diversify their skillset. Once you’ve mastered one area, add related skills to your profile. For example, if you’re a content writer, you should learn SEO or social media strategy. This can open doors of opportunity to earn more money.

3. Optimize Your Proposals

A great proposal can make or break your chances of landing a client. Make sure each proposal you is tailored to the specific needs of the client, showcases your expertise, and highlights how you can solve their problem.

4. Learn How to Write Proposals Well

You might be tempted to use AI tools, don’t give in. Writing your own will give you a deeper understanding of the client’s needs and make you more persuasive. Freelancers who’ve succeeded on Upwork often emphasize mastering the art of proposal writing.

5. Ask Clients for Referrals

Satisfied clients are your best salespeople. Ask them to refer you to their colleagues or family. Also, they can give you a testimonial after successfully completing a project. This will boost your credibility and increase your chances of getting new clients.

6. Focus on Client Results When Writing Proposals

Instead of listing all the services you can offer, focus on the results the client wants to achieve. This makes your proposal stand out and shows that you’re focused on delivering outcomes rather than just tasks.

7. Niche Down to Beat the Competition

This is so important. I emphasized it in an earlier article. Specializing in a niche area can set you apart in a crowded market. Instead of being just a generalist, be an expert in something specific, like a Klaviyo expert for e-commerce businesses.

8. Target Long-term Projects

Aim for long-term projects. Don’t settle for quick wins. A freelancer once shared with me that they worked with their first client for over three years. Fewer, long-term clients leads to stable and more predictable income.

9. Manage Multiple Clients by Outsourcing

Once you’re managing several clients, outsource to trusted professionals. This will help lighten the load. Building a team of freelancers you trust lets you to take on more work and still deliver excellent results.

10. Create a Brand Signature

Find something that sets you apart as a freelancer, like a personal brand signature. You know how you can always recognize a Wes Anderson film through the colors. For you, this could be consistently delivering before the deadline or having a unique communication style. A distinct brand signature create a solid reputation for you.

11. Get a Mentor

Upwork courses are often generic. They’re made with the intention to sell to everybody. These courses won’t give you the personalized insights you need for your career growth. Instead, find a mentor who can guide you based on their experience. This mentor can be someone who is ahead of you in your chosen field. You might have to pay them for their time. But, it will be worth it in the long run.

12. Pay Your Dues

Don’t expect to land high-paying jobs right off the bat. Be willing to take smaller gigs to build your portfolio and get reviews. The top-earning freelancers I studied earning started with small jobs of $20 to get a foot in the door.

13. Communication Skills is more important than Techcical Skills

Your technical expertise is essential for getting higher paying gigs. However, your communication skills are even more important. Clients want someone who understands their needs, responds quickly, and keeps them in the loop. Good communication makes you stand out among the most technical skilled competitors.

14. Underpromise and Overdeliver

One of the freelancers I studied has an impeccable signature move. It was delivering well before the deadline. This helped him to build trust and loyalty. If you emulate this move, clients will want to work with you again and refer you to others.

Remember, no job will make you millions overnight. These top earners on Upwork took a year or two to build their success. So be patient, accumulate related skills, keep to deadlines, and deliver results. These are the keys to long-term success. Be consistent in using them, and doors of success will be open to you.

Do you have a marketable skill but you don’t know how to get jobs with it on the platform? Perhaps, you have questions that you can’t seem to get answers to? If your search led you to this article, you’ve come to the right place. Here, you’ll get answers to the questions that have been burning in your mind.

Should I Have an Upwork Profile for Multiple Skills?

Yes, but there’s a smart way to do it. You use the specialized profile feature. Upwork’s specialized profiles are designed for this exact purpose. If your skills are unrelated (e.g., graphic design and virtual assistance), create separate profiles for each of them. This helps you look like an expert in both fields rather than someone spreading themselves too thin.

2. Should I Include My Portfolio Link in Every Proposal?

Definitely! Don’t make clients dig through your profile to find your portfolio. You run the risk of losing them if you do so. Attach a direct link to your proposal. Think about it: the easier you make their life, the more likely they’ll hire you. More importantly, avoid phrases like “check my profile for samples”, in your proposal. Keep everything in one place to keep the client focused on your pitch.

3. How Do I Handle Rejections or Slow Periods?

Rejections are part of the journey. They are the bumps you encounter on the road, so don’t let them derail you. Instead of focusing on what you didn’t get, keep refining your proposals and targeting jobs that are a perfect fit for your skills. A top freelancer once shared how they were rejected for a full year before finally getting accepted onto Upwork. Their persistence paid off. Now, they’re earning six figures annually.

4. How Do I Position Myself as a Specialist in My Field?

Your profile must scream expertise. Highlight your niche skills and show how they solve specific problems. For instance, if you’re a data analyst, add phrases like “optimizing business processes through data insights” in your overview. Another thing you can do is look at other top-rated freelancers in your niche. Study their profiles and learn from how they present themselves.

5. Is Raising Your Rates a Good Idea?

Yes, but you need to do it gradually. First, start small to build your credibility, then increase your rates with each completed project and positive review. A while ago, there was a freelancer I mentored who started at $15/hour, then raised their rates to $20, $30, and finally $100/hour. They tested the waters with each jump and found clients willing to pay more as their reputation grew.

6. What’s the Role of Community in Freelancing?

Networking is invaluable for your growth. Joining communities of like-minded freelancers keeps you informed about platform updates, trends, and job opportunities. Some freelancers even hire directly from their network. You can join Upwork’s own community like UpworkChats to connect with other professionals.

7. How Do I Deal With Difficult Clients or Late Payments?

Late payments are rare on Upwork due to their escrow system, but difficult clients are a reality. It’s inevitable you’ll meet them in your freelancing journey. So what do you do? Always maintain professionalism and communicate clearly. If a client leaves negative feedback, use the opportunity to clarify your side of the story in the comments section. There was a time I had to deal with a tough client. I stayed calm and sticked to the facts that were well documented during our communication. This approach prevented the situation from escalating and preserved my reputation.

Freelancing on Upwork isn’t just about hard work. You have to work smart. Optimize your profile, craft compelling proposals, and stay consistent. Remember, rejection is part of the process, but perseverance will get you where you want to go.

Take these tips, apply them, and watch your freelance career grow. If you ever feel stuck, revisit these answers. They’re like having a freelancing buddy in your corner; they will guide you.

Whether you work from home full-time, part-time on a hybrid job model, or work on your side hustles from home, it actually feels great — until it doesn’t. Yes, you’d enjoy your freedom and flexibility, but you may find yourself struggling with distractions making it difficult for you to focus, such as scrolling endlessly on your phone, realising you haven’t moved in hours. But don’t worry! I have some simple, fun, and science-backed tricks for you to stay on track, feel great, and actually get stuff done.

Photo by Stefan Cosma on Unsplash

1. Trick your mind by having a morning routine

I don’t know if you’ve noticed how getting dressed makes you feel ready to go out, even if you’re staying in. That is simple psychology at work! So, choose a specific time to wake up daily, take a shower, and then wear something presentable, even if no one actually sees you. Then, ensure you work out even if it means 5–10 minutes. Sitting for too long is known to give backaches and drain your energy, so try apps like Stretchy or Stand Up, which remind you. It is also good to listen to music that pumps you up. All this is to start your day with something that makes your body feel awake and puts your mind in control.

2. Choose a work-only spot in your apartment

You should definitely avoid your bed. You know the human brain loves patterns. If you work where you sleep, eat, or binge-watch videos, you’re likely to confuse your brain. So it’s best you set up a designated space just for work — even if it’s a specific corner of your room. If you can get a standing desk, that will be cool, as standing makes you feel more alert, reduces feeling fatigued, and helps you think better.

3. The Pomodoro Secret

I used it a lot. You know our brains are not designed for long work periods. It prefers rapid bursts of effort followed by brief rest periods. So, try the Pomodoro Technique. That is, work for about 25 minutes, then take a quick break of about 5 minutes. Repeat this four times, then take a longer break, like an hour. Doing this keeps you fresh, keeping you away from burnout. When I track my time with apps like Clockify or Upwork Time Tracker, I am way more productive.

4. Use an AI personal assistant

With the entrance of AI, it makes sense for us to use technology to stay organised. Tools like Notion and Todoist remind you of deadlines, help you plan your day, and even recommend the best times to complete specific tasks based on your energy levels. As a result, these tools enable you to be far more productive.

Photo by Owen Beard on Unsplash

Tools like RescueTime track where your time goes, while smart schedulers suggest the best times for deep work. The less you have to think about organising, the more brainpower you have for real work.

5. Moving more helps your creativity and productivity

You want your brain to stay active, so call on its bestie, which is your body. Sitting all day is terrible for you; the more you move, the better you think. So stand up while taking calls, stretch at least every hour, and do a quick workout between tasks. Not only will you feel better, it will boost your productivity.

6. Set Boundaries (Even If No One Listens at First)

You can tell your family or roommates something like, “When I’m working, pretend I’m at the office.” Use work-in-progress signs, headphones, or intelligent assistants like Alexa to block interruptions. Then don’t forget how mindless strolling on social media can threaten your products, so be strict with yourself.

7. Have a “Clock Out” Signal in your brain

One big tendency is working all around the clock just because you can. Have a time assigned as close of work, so once work time is exceeded, shut your laptop, step away, and switch gears. Your mental health should have this “off switch” to avoid burnout. Have a simple end-of-day ritual—listening to music or stepping out of the house for a stroll—to tell your brain, “Work is done!”.

8. Make Productivity a Game

Gamify your tasks by challenging and rewarding yourself! Determine to finish a specific task before you reward yourself with scrolling through TikTok for 15 minutes. Also, you can rank your level of focus over 10 and try to beat your yesterday’s focus score. Turn your work task into a game, and suddenly, you become more productive and have fun doing it.

I hope these tips help you stay productive without feeling like a robot.
