My name is Ozoagu Mabel, and I am a product designer based in Lagos State, Nigeria. I am married to an engineer and have two wonderful kids. As the fourth child in a family of seven, I was raised by a retired DSP father and a trader mother in Ezeagu, Enugu State. I hold a BA in Religious Education.

Initially, I was learning graphic design when my cousin introduced me to the world of tech. I had always thought tech was a male-dominated field, but her insights sparked my interest. Eager to expand my knowledge, I began searching for scholarship opportunities and discovered platforms like Tech4Dev, amongst others. When the application period for the Women Techsters Fellowship Class of 2024 arrived, I applied and was thrilled to be accepted into the Product Design learning track.

My name is Engr. Enita Ese Okonkwo, a value-driven innovator and community builder with over 14 years of experience in civil and infrastructure engineering, and literacy development in Nigeria. As the only girl among three siblings raised in Lagos by parents deeply rooted in the publishing and educational sectors, my upbringing emphasized the importance of learning. I am a graduate of Civil Engineering (B.Eng) from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. I am also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute (PMI) and a Quality Management Professional — QMS ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor from The Chartered Quality Institute (CQI). I also have Certificates in Business, Leadership & Management studies from the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development, the African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative, and a mini-MBA from the International School of Management (ISM), UK.

My passion lies in creating value within teams, driving growth, and making a meaningful impact in civil engineering, business, technology innovation, literacy, and community development. I believe in Africa’s rise on the global stage, with African women as the 21st-century Amazons.

My decision to pursue a tech career was driven by my passion to build a startup that addresses critical challenges in the Nigerian engineering and construction industry. I found out about the Women Techsters Fellowship Class of 2024 training when researching suitable programs to learn the skills and experience to build my startup. After visiting the Tech4Dev website and their social media websites, I was motivated to apply immediately as there were so many inspiring testimonials from women, not just in Nigeria but across Africa. The registration for the Women Techsters Fellowship Class of 2024 cohort was to close in 2 weeks, however, I applied and scaled through all the application stages and was lucky to be selected as a 2024 Women Techsters fellow in the Data Science and AI learning track.

The Women Techsters Fellowship was an excellent way to kickstart my Tech entrepreneurship career, providing me with essential tech skills in Data Science/Artificial Intelligence, community, and mentorship network. Combining the Women Techsters Fellowship, running a business, and building a start-up career was a tremendous challenge, especially during the intense periods of classes, exam preparation, capstone projects, and completing required external certifications. My name is Hundo Temitope, a Product Designer and a student of the University of Lagos. I’m from a family of five, and I’m the second-born. My dad works at Nestlé Nigeria Plc, and my mom is an entrepreneur. Although I’m from Lagos State and grew up in Lagos, my family now lives in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

I am currently a 400-level student at the University of Lagos, studying Marine Sciences. My tech journey started with my love for graphic design. I enjoyed creating flyers and logos — I could spend a whole day designing without getting bored or tired. But deep down, I wanted more; I wanted to be a ‘tech sis.’ So, I started researching and came across Product Design, which immediately caught my attention. The problem then was figuring out where and how to learn the skills to become a good Product Designer.

I found out about Tech4Dev and the Women Techsters Fellowship Class of 2024 through a friend. After I told him about my interest in Product Design, he introduced me to the program and patiently explained everything, knowing I was just starting in the field. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to grow and learn, so I applied. The day I got accepted was one of the best days of my life because I knew my life was about to change for the better.

My experience during the Women Techsters Fellowship Class of 2024 was amazing, especially since it was my first-ever tech training. As a beginner, the program gave me a strong foundation and taught me important skills like user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing — all the things I need to be a good Product Designer. My favorite part, aside from the technical lessons, was the soft skills classes, where I learned about teamwork, communication, and leadership. These skills are really important for doing well in any work environment. Overall, the training boosted my confidence and gave me the tools to grow in tech.

As a student, one of the biggest challenges I faced during the Women Techsters Fellowship program was balancing it with my studies. My class schedule often clashed with the training times, so I’d be in class with one earbud listening to my facilitator while also trying to pay attention to my lecturer. It was tough because, funny enough, I found myself paying more attention to the tech lessons than my schoolwork! There was even a point where I told my facilitator that I was losing interest in school because my passion for Product Design kept growing due to the amazing training I was receiving. However, I managed to overcome this challenge by improving my time management and learning how to balance both commitments.

The Women Techsters Fellowship program has helped me progress in my tech journey. Thanks to the training and skills I gained during the program, I landed my first internship as a complete newbie in tech. I’ve also been getting collaboration gigs. This experience has not only boosted my confidence but is also opening up opportunities for me in the tech field. I plan to maximize the knowledge I’ve gained during the training by applying the skills I learned in real-world projects and internships. I aim to take on more collaboration gigs to build my portfolio and gain practical experience in Product Design. Also, I want to stay connected with the Women Techsters community for networking, as I believe learning from others will help me grow even more in my tech journey.

My advice for anyone thinking about going into tech is “to start exploring your interests and not be afraid to dive in, even as a beginner. Take advantage of available training programs and resources, like the Women Techsters Fellowship, which can provide a strong foundation. Be open to learning and don’t get discouraged by challenges along the way. Surround yourself with supportive people who can motivate you, and remember that persistence is key. With dedication and hard work, you can make great progress in your tech journey.”

The International Day of the Girl Child, observed every year on October 11th, serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of empowering girls across the globe. This annual celebration honors the strength, resilience, and potential of girls while offering a platform for them to voice their challenges and aspirations. The 2024 theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” highlights the hope and ambition that young girls carry, while underscoring the urgent need for systemic change to ensure a better tomorrow.

At Tech4Dev, we believe that equipping girls with skills and knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is vital in building a more equitable world. This year’s theme deeply resonates with our mission, especially through our flagship Women Techsters Initiative, which champions the inclusion of girls and women in technology. By promoting STEM education, we are not only nurturing future leaders but also ensuring that girls’ voices are integral to addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.

The girls of today are tomorrow’s innovators. Their ideas and leadership are essential to tackling global issues such as climate change, technological advancement, and more. Through our Tech Girls Drive, a grassroots advocacy effort under the Women Techsters Initiative, we are creating awareness and inspiring young girls aged 8 to 20 to pursue careers in STEM. By visiting schools and communities, sharing the success stories of women in technology, and providing essential learning resources, we aim to ignite a passion for STEM in young girls.

Our goal is to help them envision a future where they thrive in the tech industry, equipped with creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. However, the urgency for action cannot be overstated. Across the globe, girls still face numerous barriers to education, from socioeconomic challenges to harmful cultural norms and gender-based violence.

According to the United Nations, millions of girls remain out of school, with many forced into child marriage or labor. During crises such as natural disasters and conflict, girls are disproportionately affected, widening the gap in gender equality. To break this cycle of disadvantage, we must prioritize girls’ education and provide targeted support that addresses these challenges.

Equally important is the need to recognize and amplify the power of girls’ voices. Every girl has a vision, and their ideas have the potential to ignite movements that lead to transformative change. We must create spaces where girls can freely express themselves, share their experiences, and advocate for their rights.

On this International Day of the Girl Child, let us embrace the dreams and aspirations of girls worldwide and commit to meaningful action. What can happen in just one year? In just one year, Diamond Eyamu transformed her career from a fashion designer to a Senior Data Analyst, driven by a desire to fulfill her professional potential. Born in Delta State and raised in Edo State, Nigeria, Diamond’s journey into tech was sparked by encouragement from her university friends and a determination to close the gap caused by time spent raising her family. Through the Women Techtsers programs, she honed her skills in data analysis, overcame challenges, and embraced new opportunities, ultimately discovering a fulfilling path that not only improved her economic status but also ignited her passion for technology. Read on to learn more about Diamond’s story.

My name is Diamond Eyamu, a multifaceted professional from Edo State, Nigeria. I am the third child in a family of six, born in Delta State but raised in Edo State. I am a mother of two with a passion for carving a niche for myself in the professional world. I graduated with a degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of Benin and I am also an Accounting Technician (ATS) holder, a certification from ICAN.

My desire to transition into tech stemmed from the professional lag I experienced due to the time I took off to raise my family. I had been a fashion designer for about four years, but I always longed to jump-start my professional career in tech. My three close friends from university encouraged me to make the transition and provided the support I needed to begin in June 2023.

Once my three friends planted the tech seed in me, they further assisted by sharing links to tech opportunities, one of which was the Women Techsters Bootcamp. I enrolled and was fortunate to get in. I also attended the Women Techsters open day event in July 2023, where I became excited about the journey ahead. The speakers inspired me to see the possibilities of achieving my professional aspirations through tech.

When I started the Women Techsters Bootcamp, my first challenge was keeping up with the live classes and other activities, as I still needed to run my business to support myself and my children. Over time, I learned to manage my responsibilities because I motivated myself to make the necessary sacrifices for my progress. I also couldn’t afford to disappoint my friends, who believed in me and expected a success story, so I persevered.

So far, I have completed two trainings through the Tech4Dev program: the Women Techsters Bootcamp, which ended in August 2023, and a three-month Data Analysis mentorship program held in April 2024. During the Bootcamp, I was taught by an excellent tutor named Samuel Iheagwam, who devoted his time to helping students like me, who had no prior knowledge of Power BI, learn to analyze data and create impressive visuals. I showcased my work on social media, which formally announced my entry into the tech world. I made new connections and learned the value of teamwork.

The Data Analysis mentorship program was led by another remarkable mentor, Muhammad Suleman. He taught us how to excel in interviews and craft resumes that align with specific job positions. He concluded the program by imparting essential analytical skills needed for effective business data analysis. Overall, my experience has been inspiring, transforming me from a novice in tech to my current position in the data analysis field. Words cannot express my gratitude towards the Tech4Dev team.

Participating in the Women Techsters Bootcamp was a springboard for my career. After completing the program, I explored various aspects of tech and landed my first small job as a Data Officer, thanks to the certification I earned during the Bootcamp program. I worked in that position for three months before being hired as a Senior Data Analyst at a multinational company.

My economic status has significantly improved, as my previous employer valued my contributions and allowed me to work remotely. Looking back just one year later, I am incredibly grateful to God for connecting me with the Women Techsters program. My daily activities now revolve around the skills and knowledge I gained during my training, and I strive to improve each day. I also belong to the Women Techsters Bootcamp alumni platform, where I also receive incredible support from the community.

My advice to those considering a move into tech is, “ to ensure it is what you truly want, then pursue it wholeheartedly, for the effort will be worthwhile in the end.”
