How did you advance your skill set …I know you dj /produce and have an event collective?

YOSH: I think I advance a skill set the same way anyone does, just by putting in the hours. There’s a Bible verse, if I had to pick a favourite it would probably be this one. This influenced me pretty heavily in terms of how I navigate The process of gaining new skills. It’s Zechariah 4:10 and it says do not despise the small beginnings for our Lord rejoices to see the work begin. I think that speaks to the idea that the first step is always the hardest to make. I think the idea of starting something and being bad at it can be quite daunting, but that verse says, you know, there is joy in starting small, and so yeah, just get it cracking really.

So I’m part of a collective called NoKurfew that’s tied quite closely to the parties that I throw. This last year I created Yosh’s Yard, and was throwing parties under that name. It was fun and I think I’ll still look to throw a party under that name every now and then but yeah, NoKurfew? I really see that being something special. Shoutout to my brothers Doobz & J.Bourne. Yeah yeah, I mean again, it’s just a process of iterating and reiterating. If something doesn’t work, you take the lesson on board to try something else and if it does work, just stick with that.

What inspires you to create?

YOSH: I think in general what inspires me to create is just living my life, allowing myself to experience emotions, having conversations with people and being open to different perspectives & ideas but right now specifically what has kind of lit a fire under me is the release party, I had a show last week Friday just to celebrate the release of the most recent full length project …all the days of your life. There were four people that travelled quite a distance to see me perform. There were two young guys who found me on TikTok and got a train down from Reading. And there was a married couple that came all the way from Glasgow. I hope they don’t see this cause I’m gonna guess they were maybe mid 60s and from what it looked like, a very different walk of life to me, so obviously it’s one thing having your friends and your family like the music but to see that it is crossing geographic borders and these people are resonating with the music so much that they’re willing to get on a plane and come down just to just celebrate with me, it’s very humbling you know? It’s nice to see that what you’re doing is working.

What makes your sound different to other rapper?

YOSH: I think I’m a unique individual so it might be difficult for me to pinpoint exactly what it is that makes my sound unique. I think just as a result of the fact that there’s nobody else like me on this planet and it’s never my intention to copy somebody wholly, my music is gonna sound different.

How does culture impact your work?

YOSH: Culture is everything, it’s the people that you surround yourself with. It’s the content you can consume, the things that you watch, the things that you listen to, the places that you spend your time, so it’s not possible for me to distinguish between the culture and my work you know? My work looks the way it does because of my culture.

What impact do you hope to have ?

YOSH: I’m not looking outward too much regarding the impact I’d like to have. I just enjoy making music and I enjoy sharing it with the world. I guess I would like people to feel something, to reckon with their emotions. Otherwise, I think the impact I would like to have is an impact I’m already having, just being able to write and being able to create and the feeling I get from doing that, you know, that is a large enough impact for me.

Best advice you have been given?

YOSH: The first thing that comes to mind is not actually something related to the rapping. It is something related to throwing parties. Full transparency, been doing NoKurfew for about five years, obviously found major success in Nottingham, throwing house parties and club nights. Then coming down to London was a bit of a reset. Had to start from ground zero somewhat. ou know build the audience up again. We’re building a core fan base and then it becomes a question of how do you begin to reach new audiences. One collective that’s in a place where I see us being is PlayPIEM. So I ran into Kehn9, the genius behind PlayPIEM and I told him I’m having these struggles with NoKurfew, what advice do you have? And yeah he basically just told me if you’re struggling to get a certain number of people coming through the doors, just use a smaller venue. Obviously, hearing him say that it sounds so obvious but I really feel like that shifted the trajectory of NoKurfew and I am very grateful for receiving that timely advice.

This one’s about process, purpose, and the power of staying true to your voice.

What does QUAKE aim to do?

QUAKE Magazine is a not for profit, digital platform that aims to showcase young creatives, and provide a non-competitive space for them to connect, express and tell their stories.

QUAKE is filled with the work and voices of some of my absolute favourite creatives from around the world, who keep me inspired and motivated.

My hope is that you connect to something in them, that they impact you, speak to you and most of all, inspire you too.

Can you take us back to the beginning — what inspired you to start Quake?

It started back in 2020 as my final major project. I studied photojournalism and always loved telling stories. I used to see my friends submit to big magazines like Dazed and i-D, but not get a reply. They would take it as a reflection of their talent which is entirely untrue. I’m always inspired by the creatives I meet, and what better way to honour that inspiration than culminating all their incredible work in one accessible, non competitive place. A place where art can just exist without boundaries. I wanted to produce a print magazine but when covid hit, that wasn’t possible. I didn’t want my hard work or the artist’s work to go to waste so I landed on a website instead. It worked out better than I could have imagined. Everyone was cooped up at home and online. People were willing to connect and collaborate digitally.

We’ll continue to be digital but 5 years later, it makes me happy to know I’m finally putting out a print magazine!

How does your culture impact you, your work and your life?

I’m Indian but I grew up as a third culture kid, moving to different countries every few years. The person I am now is a culmination of all those beautiful and rich cultures I was so lucky to experience. It taught me so much about how the world works, and about how people work, opening my mind in ways that have gotten me to where I am, and in ways I’m still understanding.

Living in different places also fuelled my love for taking pictures and storytelling within the ever changing complexities of the world we live in. Not a lot of people know, but I also work full time at the SDG2 Advocacy Hub, an organisation that advocates for zero hunger. My childhood very much drove me this direction and I feel lucky I get to exercise both of my passions — art and advocacy.

Can you share a moment when you realized QUAKE was making a real impact?

The first time I had an in person event in London 2023, I was able to physically see this beautiful organic community we had built over 3 years. Often it’s difficult to see the impact you’re having, and imposter syndrome creeps in, when you’re operating behind a screen. In person shoots are amazing and a momentary break from the imposter syndrome but I didn’t realise until then just how many people engaged with the magazine. One of the best parts was finding out that people had met through the magazine and collaborated with each other further.

What’s next for QUAKE — any upcoming projects or changes we should be excited for?

I think the most exciting thing on the horizon at the moment is our step to radio! We’ll be hosting a monthly radio show with Sibling Radio in London, where we’ll be chatting with creatives. A radio version of our magazine features you could say!

We’ll also be continuing to build our in person communities in Madrid and London with events, so keep an eye out!

We had the pleasure of speaking to Calvin Omari. A musician from a small rural country town outside Baltimore, who now lives in Madrid.

In what ways has your cultural background shaped your creative process?

CALVIN: My creative process usually comes from pain and being alone. Would attribute my creative processes to my lack of ability to pay attention and focus.

Your saxophone playing adds a distinctive flavor to your music. How did you start learning the instrument, and what inspired you to incorporate it into your tracks?

CALVIN: I learned sax at 8. Grew up playing and improvising in a rural country gospel church. Playing by ear is how we played our music. I was only saxophonist, because I was scared to sing and use my voice. Don’t like the sound of it sometimes. I didn’t want to be labeled a saxophonist, I play the sax in my tracks a lot less then in actual concerts. I try to use the sax sparingly or in songs where maybe you wouldn’t expect there to be one.

How have your musical influences shaped your sound over time? Can you highlight a few key artists or genres that have impacted you?

CALVIN: My influences have been Pharrell’s production in the late 90’s early 00’s. The first song I ever produced was in high school and it was inspired by the song “grindin” by clipse and“hood hop” by jkwon. I was obsessed with the production. The artists that impacted me most have been Missy Elliot, Lauryn hill, Mystikal, OutKast, Kirk Franklin, Stevie wonder , Ray Charles , Clipse , Kanye , Pharrel , Kid Cudi , Frank Ocean , James Blake , Etta James , Alabama shakes, Bill Withers, jpeg, Sean Paul, and other known artists.

The genres that inspired me have been African American music (from the americas not just North America ) Gospel , Hip Hop , RnB, Rock , Baltimore Club Music, Gogo, Neo Soul, Soul, Alternative / Experimental.

You're sound feels innovative and unique. How would you describe it, and what elements do you believe distinguish it from mainstream music?

CALVIN: My music id say change’s usually from the beginning to the end because of my attention problems. It sounds boring to me repeating something more than once the same way. I copy but try to recreate an idea that I like to create something new. I feel a lot of music can tend to sound the same. Sometimes when I’m listening to my music , I think about if I would find it corny ( being a random person) or not to see if I truly like it. I don’t use a studio and learned production by myself, so maybe that’s why it sounds different to ppl .

What themes or messages do you try to express through your lyrics, and why are they meaningful to you?

CALVIN: I write when I’m usually sad, insecure, angry, or trying to convey a feeling. I like messing with expectations musically. But also like saying things I didn’t have the chance to, for whatever reason. Or saying things or having melodies that just audibly sound nice.

Can you recall a defining moment in your music career that has had a significant impact on your artistic journey?

CALVIN: One was my first shows ever: in Montreal. Was terrified and didn’t think I’d have the courage.

What can fans expect from you in the future? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?

CALVIN: Whoever listens to me can expect constant music, and more collabs with friends and other artists and for me to push my personal boundaries.

Tuvimos la suerte de charlar con Le Couple, una pareja que no solo comparte su vida, sino también su pasión por la música como DJs. Su conexión se refleja en cada set que tocan, creando un ambiente único que invita a todos a disfrutar y bailar.

En esta entrevista, vamos a conocer un poco más sobre Ines y Augus aka LE COUPLE SOUND, cómo se apoyan mutuamente en su carrera y qué les motiva a seguir creando juntos.

¡Vamos a sumergirnos en su mundo musical!

Es poco común ver a parejas trabajando juntas en el mundo de la música, especialmente como DJs. Nos encantaría conocer más sobre ustedes. ¿Qué les ha llevado a formar este dúo y cómo es la experiencia de colaborar como pareja en este entorno?

LE COUPLE: Le couple sound nace hace un poco más de 1 año, de la fusión de nuestras vivencias individuales y nuestra esencia. Es una fusion entre Mexico, Francia y España, nuestros orígenes.

En nuestra selección musical encontrarán géneros como el soul, funky, afro, disco y house. Con ella buscamos hacer bailar y conectar con quienes la compartimos.

¿De qué manera equilibran su relación de pareja como compañeros de trabajo?

LE COUPLE: En nuestra dinámica como pareja no lo vemos como algo disociado porque no lo consideramos un trabajo. Es más un proyecto/actividad que tenemos como pareja, hay parejas a las que les gusta montar en bici o ir al cine, a nosotros a parte de eso nos gusta intercambiar y mezclar nuestra música.

La expresión ‘los polos opuestos se atraen’ suele asociarse a la idea de que las diferencias pueden enriquecer una colaboración. ¿Estáis de acuerdo con esta perspectiva cuando se trata de crear un set? Además, ¿cómo impactan vuestras respectivas culturas en este proceso creativo?

LE COUPLE: Ambos somos diferentes y eso es lo bonito, porque enriquece nuestra selección, y a nosotros como personas. Nuestras sesiones, son pedacitos de Ines y de Agus, cada uno con su esencia, su mundo interno y al juntar ambas cosas, surge el sonido de Lecouple sound. Por esto mismo, claro que no siempre estamos de acuerdo, pero eso hace que haya lugar a una conversación donde cada uno comparte su opinión, mood y preguntas de ese momento, y como resultado encontremos sinergias y aprendamos el uno del otro. Una vez que nos ponemos de acuerdo, tomamos distancia para verlo desde fuera e ir ajustando la selección hasta que el conjunto funcione.

¿Cuánto tiempo llevan conociéndose?

LE COUPLE: 5 años

¿Qué género musical disfrutan más y cuál consideran que es el más desafiante para ustedes?

LE COUPLE: Nos encanta componer nuestra selección musical con géneros como el soul, funky, afro, disco y house. Pero en general, los géneros que nos hagan mover los pies jajaja. Para nosotros los más complejos serían los temas menos electrónicos, con mucho instrumental, por ejemplo clásicos del disco o el funky.

¿Qué momento de su carrera ha tenido un impacto significativo en ustedes?

LE COUPLE: Lo qué más nos ha impactado es, que algo que surgió como un divertimento tuvo una respuesta inesperada en las personas que han ido siguiendo nuestras sesiones, lo que nos ha hecho ver que funciona y que tenemos algo que contar. Para nosotros la música es algo muy personal, es una parte que habla mucho de ti. Por eso nos encanta compartir nuestra selección y ver que a otras personas les ha gustado y les ha hecho bailar, nos parece una forma de conectar muy especial, sin palabras.

¡Estamos muy emocionados por tenerlos aqui! ¿Cuál es el próximo paso para ustedes? ¿Dónde podemos encontraros?

LE COUPLE: Seguir haciendo sesiones para Youtube, para que cualquiera pueda verlo desde donde sea. Pero definitivamente queremos pinchar más en directo, porque nuestra parte favorita de todo esto es interactuar con el público.

Desde pequeños, todos hemos tenido la capacidad de crear nuestro propio mundo de fantasía como una forma de evadir la realidad que nos rodea. Sin embargo, no todos hemos logrado dar forma a esa sensación a través de la música como lo ha hecho Paula Varela.

Su mixtape más reciente, titulado Niñatada, nos invita a sumergirnos en un universo lleno de influencias musicales, donde su versatilidad y creatividad brillan con fuerza.

¡Estamos muy emocionados de tenerte! Antes de comenzar, nos gustaría que te presentaras y nos cuentes quien es Paula Varela.

Paula: Hola! Lo primero, muchas gracias por tenerme aquí. Me emociona contestar estas preguntas y dejar que veáis más de cerca lo que es Paula Varela<4.

Soy una artista musical y performer de Madrid. A lo largo de los años me he formado en teatro, artes escénicas, danza y música y, gracias a ello, he entendido mi proyecto como un lugar donde mezclar estas disciplinas. Para mí, la música es un espacio donde crear libre y ser quien quiero ser. Me gusta llorar y vacilar de la misma manera, y mi música es un reflejode esto. Espero que conectéis con mi mundo y disfrutéis de lo que tengo para contaros.

¿De qué manera ha influido tu entorno cultural en tu música?

Paula: He tenido la suerte de haberme criado en Madrid, una ciudad grande en la que conviven muchas culturas y hay una escena artística diversa y amplia. Desde pequeña he escuchado mucha música de diferentes sitios: folclore español, ritmos latinos, pop, música electrónica, jazz, hip hop…y siempre me he sentido fascinada por descubrir cosas nuevas. Mi proyecto no podría entenderse sin esta mezcla de sonidos y culturas. Haberme podido empapar de ritmos e identidades tan diferentes toda mi vida, ha despertado en mí esas ganas de experimentación, de mezclar géneros y de tener un abanico grande a la hora de crear.

Además, toda la cultura callejera y nocturna que hay aquí, me ha hecho vivir la música de una manera muy divertida y pasional. Pasar el día en la calle con mis amigas, salir a clubs a bailar y mover el culo, ir por todas partes con mi altavoz buscando esa unión a través de lamúsica… son experiencias que se han quedado en mi imaginario a la hora de escribir letras y de crear y elegir mis propios sonidos.

En la introducción de tu último proyecto Niñatada, escuchamos la voz de una niña que reflexiona sobre la creación de mundos paralelos como forma de evasión. ¿Cuál fue la inspiración detrás de esta introducción y qué mensaje busca transmitir la pequeña Paula?

Paula: Soy una persona muy imaginativa y siempre digo que he construido mi vida a base de contarme historias. De pequeña era una niña muy creativa y me pasaba horas pintando, haciendo mis propios muñecos y buscando hadas por los rincones. Creía mucho en la magia, fantaseaba con encontrar algún ser fantástico a mi alrededor, y recuerdo que en el colegio había gente que se reía de mí por tener estas ideas. Creo que desde pequeña entendí que si no me gustaba mi mundo, tendría que crearme otro. Tenía esa intuición de imaginar mundos dentro de mi cabeza para escapar del que me rodeaba. Y así fui creciendo y creándome a mí misma. Muchas veces he sentido que mi vida era un acto de fe, y esta confianza en imaginar o jugar fuera de la realidad es lo que me ha mantenido en el camino. Quería abrir así el EP ,rescatar esa inocencia de mi infancia que, con el tiempo, me he dado cuenta que sentó las bases de cómo tomarme la vida según avanza.

¿Cuál es tu objetivo principal al crear arte y cómo te gustaría que se perciba tu trabajo?

Paula: Mi objetivo principal es crear sin miedo, disfrutar creando e intentar apartar preocupaciones, juicios y límites dentro del proceso creativo. Siento que son cualidades que pertenecen a la vida, no al arte. A la hora de crear tiene que existir un riesgo y es ese lugar al que trato de redirigirme siempre. Me gusta contar historias desde ahí y ver cómo la gente las acoge y se siente identificada. Es muy fuerte pensar que una canción que escribí porque me sentía de una manera o porque tenía la necesidad de contar esa historia en concreto, conecte con lo que siente la persona que la escucha y pueda acompañarla en su propio momento vital ❤

Hemos tenido la oportunidad de escuchar tu canción “Manos Frías”, que ha resonado mucho con nosotros. ¿Podrías describir el proceso creativo detrás de esta pieza en particular?

Paula: Creo que manos frías está siendo la protagonista del EP hasta el momento jj. Me alegra porque me parece que recoge muy bien la energía y el mensaje de la mixtape. La idea surgió a mitad del proceso y primero hicimos la parte instrumental. T anto a Sergio, mi productor, como a mí, nos estaba gustando mucho, fuimos lanzando diferentes ideas y salió muy fluida.

Sin embargo, la voz y la letra no acompañaron del todo este proceso y la dejé apartada durante un tiempo mientras avanzábamos con otras cosas. Un día, volví a abrir el proyecto en mi casa y, mientras le daba una primera escucha, empecé a frotarme las manos porque las tenía frías y tuve un pensamiento como de, “siempre tengo las manos frías”, un poco molesta. De pronto sentí que, exacto, siempre había tenido las manos frías, desde pequeña hasta ahora. Este pensamiento me hizo viajar de mi infancia hasta día de hoy, entendiendo que el tener las manos frías me obligaba a calentarlas y que, buscar ese calor, era algo que siempre había estado conmigo. T al vez, buscar ese calor era lo que me mantenía viva, lo que me recordaba que tenía que seguir viviendo. Y se abrió este imaginario de tener frío en las manos por pasar el día fuera de casa, pasar el día fuera de casa por estar triste y buscar ese calor en estar todos los días con mis amigas, calle arriba, calle abajo, siendo un poco maleantes para divertirnos y jugar un rato. Buscar el calor que quemase mis manos frías en el reflejo de otras manos frías. Esta canción acabó por convertirse en una carta de amor a las niñas tristes que tratan de crear un mundo mejor que el que les ha tocado. A las niñas tristes que juegan a ser unas niñatas para pasar un buen rato fuera de su realidad. Y así, rápidamente, manos frías le dio un sentido y una dirección muy clara al EP que estaba creando.

¿Cómo es tu experiencia como mujer queer en la industria musical y qué crees que le falta al panorama musical en España para ser más inclusivo?

Paula: Creo que la mayor parte de la industria está formada por hombres cis-hetero y es difícil introducirse y conectar en estos ambientes cuando te alejas de sus estándares.

Personalmente, me siento muy lejos y fuera de lugar de la mayoría de espacios musicales que he ido encontrando a lo largo de mi carrera. También siento que por el simple hecho de ser mujer y por mi imagen ya hay unas ideas preconcebidas sobre lo que soy o debería ser, lo que debería mostrar encima de un escenario e incluso del tipo de música que debería hacer. Simplemente quiero ser yo sin tener que dar ningún tipo de explicación. Me gustaría poder llevar a fondo y expresar mi feminidad sin que fuese leída para un consumo masculino, y que mi identidad fuese reconocida independientemente de mi manera de ser, vestir o bailar. Sería emocionante ser un referente para las niñas que lo necesitan. A mí me han faltado referentes y es nuestra responsabilidad luchar porque las generaciones que vienen puedan tenerlos. Una meta para mí es seguir luchando, no solo por encontrar, sino por crear espacios creativos disidentes, seguros y lejos de una normatividad que excluye a tantes artistas increíbles. En España se está generando una escena emergente llena de gente queer talentosa, con propuestas increíbles. Lo que falta es empezar a poner el foco ahí, darmás oportunidades, más visibilidad a los proyectos emergentes. Hay tanta gente interesante y talentosa que nos perderemos si la industria sigue moviéndose entre los 4 de siempre…

Nos alegra muchísimo tenerte con nosotros! Nos encantaría saber, ¿cuáles son tus próximos proyectos, Paula? ¡Estamos ansiosos por saber más!

Paula: Para mí también es emocionante estar aquí! Puedo deciros que ya hay música nueva en camino, nuevas sensaciones y nuevas historias que contar… He vuelto del verano con ganas de encerrarme en el estudio y nadar hondo en el proyecto. Cada vez trato de ir más profundo con mi sonido. Este momento está siendo muy emocionante, porque al no crear ya dentro del marco del EP , estoy dando rienda suelta a las ideas que me vienen. Estoy llegando a nuevos lugares que me tienen ilusionada por seguir descubriéndolos y que, pronto, descubriréis vosotros también. Así que, lo que se viene es una Paula Varela diferente: mucha performance, mucho show y muchas ganas de hacer bolos y seguir compartiendo música y más música! Siento que este final de año y el comienzo del 2025 vienen fuertes, y sé que la gente se va a sorprender con lo que tengo preparado.
