As we navigate the ongoing and evolving fight with COVID, it is imperative to reflect on lessons learned. In this post, we look at key areas for enhancing our preparedness for future pandemics, whether that involves addressing a resurgence of COVID or the emergence of entirely new viral threats.

Investing in Early Warning Systems: Early detection is key to containing the spread of infectious diseases. As such, investing in public health surveillance systems that monitor for unusual disease activity, along with advancing the science behind DNA sequencing capabilities, can provide the critical head-start needed to identify and contain potential outbreaks before they escalate into full-blown pandemics.

Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure: The strain placed on our healthcare system and healthcare workers during the height of the COVID pandemic underscores the importance of having a robust healthcare infrastructure in place. This includes having adequate hospital capacity, sufficient medical supplies and equipment, and a well-trained and well-supported healthcare workforce capable of responding to unexpected surges in demand.

Promoting Global Collaboration: Reflecting on the early days of COVID, we witnessed the remarkable pace at which the virus spread across continents. This rapid transmission underscores the impact of increased globalization, where disease outbreaks disregard geographical boundaries. Effective readiness for pandemics necessitates international unity and collaboration. By fostering the international exchange of data, resources, and expertise, we enhance our ability to quickly identify and contain outbreaks, limiting their global reach.

Investing in Research and Development: The successful development and widespread distribution of vaccines and treatments has been instrumental in managing the COVID pandemic. It is imperative to maintain a strong emphasis on investing in research and development endeavors aimed at refining vaccine technologies, antiviral therapies, and diagnostic tools. This sustained effort is crucial for bolstering our preparedness and ability to swiftly address and mitigate the impacts of future pandemics.

Empowering Communities: Community engagement is essential for effective pandemic response. Empowering communities with accurate information, public health resources for prevention and mitigation, and open channels of communication with health authorities can help to build trust and facilitate collective action in times of crisis.

Fostering Resilience: Building resilience at both the individual and societal level is crucial for weathering the impact of pandemics. This includes promoting mental health awareness, strengthening social safety nets to support vulnerable individuals and populations, and implementing proactive measures to mitigate the socio-economic impacts of pandemics.

Learning from Experience: Perhaps one of the most important lessons from the COVID pandemic is the need to learn from our experiences. Conducting thorough post-pandemic evaluations to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement can inform future preparedness efforts and ensure that we are better equipped to face the challenges ahead.

Overall, the COVID pandemic has underscored the critical importance of comprehensive preparedness strategies to protect public health. By prioritizing effort in the key areas described in this post, we can ensure that we are better prepared to confront future pandemics, whatever form they may take.

— — — — — -

Unity Bands Inc. is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting low-income healthcare workers and providing credible public health information to at-risk communities.

by Kana Pham, Unity Bands correspondent, April 2, 2024

courtesy of the Center for Disease Control

As healthcare workers face infectious diseases, there’s a danger many don’t notice: zoonotic diseases. These sicknesses come from animals but can spread to humans, putting frontline workers at risk. In this blog post, we’ll talk about how these diseases are dangerous for healthcare workers and how we can provide more support for them.

The Invisible Enemy:

Zoonotic diseases represent a big challenge for healthcare workers all around the world. These diseases, like the flu or COVID-19, can be tough to deal with. Healthcare workers are at higher risk because they work closely with sick people, handle bodily fluids, and do surgeries. Zoonotic diseases can spread in unexpected ways and cause serious problems. Healthcare workers have to be very careful to stay safe from these invisible threats. For instance, in a study regarding emerging zoonotic viral infections, researchers have highlighted the potential exposure to viruses such as Hepatitis E Virus and West Nile Virus of a diverse range of professions, which include healthcare workers.

Heightened Vigilance and Awareness:

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the specter of future zoonotic disease outbreaks, it is imperative to prioritize vigilance and awareness among healthcare workers. Education and training programs should be implemented to equip frontline staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, prevent, and manage zoonotic diseases effectively. This includes understanding the modes of transmission, adopting appropriate infection control measures, and recognizing early warning signs to facilitate prompt intervention.

Investing in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

Personal protective equipment (PPE) serves as the first line of defense against zoonotic diseases in healthcare settings. Adequate supplies of high-quality PPE, including masks, gloves, gowns, and eye protection, are essential to safeguarding the health and safety of frontline healthcare workers. Moreover, regular training on the proper use and disposal of PPE is paramount to ensure its effectiveness in preventing transmission of zoonotic pathogens.

Enhancing Surveillance and Reporting Mechanisms:

Timely detection and reporting of zoonotic disease cases are critical to containing outbreaks and preventing further spread. Healthcare facilities should implement robust surveillance systems to monitor trends in zoonotic disease transmission and promptly report suspected cases to public health authorities. Collaboration between healthcare institutions, veterinary services, and public health agencies is essential to facilitate information sharing and coordinated response efforts.

Promoting Occupational Health and Well-being:

In addition to physical health risks, frontline healthcare workers may also experience psychological distress and burnout as they navigate the challenges posed by zoonotic diseases. Employers should prioritize the mental health and well-being of their staff by providing access to counseling services, peer support networks, and respite opportunities. Creating a positive healthcare work environment that fosters open communication, recognition, and appreciation is crucial to creating a movement for healthcare workers.

Healthcare professionals who provide direct patient care run a significant risk of contracting zoonotic infections. By raising awareness of these hazards, taking proactive measures to prevent them, improving training and resource availability, and ensuring the well-being of healthcare personnel, we can make things safer. Together, let’s make sure that our healthcare systems are equipped to handle these difficulties and safeguard those who put in great effort to keep others safe.

Here at Unity Bands, we aim to show appreciation to healthcare workers and make a lasting impact in this industry.

by Andrew Pasko-Reader, Unity Bands correspondent, March 20, 2024

In many ways, the foundation of a robust healthcare system is built upon the essential frontline workers and support staff. Without the nurses, techs, and aides doing much of the heavy lifting, the system runs into trouble. In this post, we examine the potential ramifications of a healthcare system that does not adequately support its essential workers.

Decreased Access to Care: Lower-level healthcare workers often play critical roles in providing frontline care, particularly in primary care settings and for underserved communities. Without their support, this could lead to decreased access to essential healthcare services, compounding existing disparities in healthcare outcomes and exacerbating existing health inequalities.

Increased Workload for Higher-Level Providers: Without sufficient support staff, higher-level healthcare providers, such as physicians and specialists, would likely face increased workloads and administrative burdens. This could result in decreased quality of care, longer wait times for patients, and higher rates of burnout among all healthcare professionals.

Risk of Medical Errors: Frontline healthcare workers often assist with tasks such as medication administration, patient monitoring, and record-keeping. All of these are fundamental components of patient safety. Without continued support for essential workers, a breakdown in basic patient care could lead to a breakdown at all levels of healthcare, significantly increasing the likelihood of widespread medical treatment errors.

Erosion of Patient Trust: Patients often interact more frequently with lower-level healthcare workers, as well as rely on them for support and guidance. Without this critical support, patient trust and satisfaction with the healthcare system could erode, leading to negative perceptions and decreased engagement in healthcare services.

Impact on Healthcare Delivery Models: A decrease of essential healthcare workers could necessitate changes in healthcare delivery models, such as increased reliance on technology, automation, or alternative care providers. While these changes may offer some benefits, they could also lead to disruptions in care continuity and reduced personalization of care.

Financial Implications: Lower-level healthcare workers often contribute to the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of healthcare delivery by performing essential tasks at a lower cost than higher-level providers. Without their support, healthcare organizations may face increased expenses associated with hiring and retaining higher-level providers or investing in alternative solutions.

Public Health Consequences: Inadequate support for essential healthcare workers could have broader public health consequences, particularly during public health emergencies or disease outbreaks. These workers often play crucial roles in disease prevention, surveillance, and response efforts, and their absence could hinder effective public health interventions.

Taken as whole, it is important to recognize the vital role essential frontline healthcare workers play. By supporting them, you not only support the individual workers struggling in challenging conditions, you also support the entire healthcare system. In the end, we all benefit from this.

— — — — — -

Unity Bands Inc. is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting low-income healthcare workers and providing credible public health information to at-risk communities. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) dedicated to supporting these underpaid and undervalued healthcare workers play a vital role in advocating for their rights and improving their working conditions. However, accessing grant funding can sometimes be lengthy and cumbersome. In this blog post, we delve into effective tactics tailored for non-profit organizations aiming to streamline grant processes, secure funding swiftly, and amplify their impact in advocating for healthcare worker assistance.

1. Establish Clear Priorities and Objectives:

To expedite the grant process, non-profits should establish clear priorities and objectives aligned with the needs of healthcare workers. By clearly defining their projects’ scope and identifying specific focus areas, NGOs can streamline the application process and communicate their goals effectively to potential funders. Clarity and focus in project proposals enhance the chances of securing timely funding.

2. Build Strong Partnerships:

Collaboration is key to expediting grants for NGOs supporting healthcare workers. By forging strategic partnerships with other NGOs, healthcare institutions, government agencies, and community organizations, NGOs can leverage collective expertise, resources, and networks to strengthen their grant applications. Collaborative partnerships enhance the credibility of proposals and demonstrate a unified approach to addressing healthcare challenges.

3. Leverage Technology and Innovation:

NGOs can expedite grant processes by leveraging technology and innovation in their application procedures. Digital platforms and online grant management systems streamline the submission, review, and approval processes, reducing administrative burden and accelerating decision-making. Additionally, incorporating innovative approaches such as data analytics, remote monitoring, and telemedicine in project proposals can demonstrate efficiency and effectiveness to potential funders.

4. Engage in Capacity Building:

Investing in capacity-building initiatives can enhance NGOs’ competitiveness in securing grants for healthcare worker support programs. Training workshops, mentorship programs, and technical assistance sessions help NGOs strengthen their grant writing skills, project management capabilities, and monitoring and evaluation practices. Building organizational capacity improves the quality of grant proposals and increases confidence in successfully implementing funded projects.

5. Demonstrate Impact and Sustainability:

NGOs should emphasize their projects’ potential impact and sustainability to expedite grant processes. Providing evidence-based strategies, measurable outcomes, and clear indicators of success in grant proposals demonstrates accountability and effectiveness to funders. Moreover, outlining plans for long-term sustainability, including community involvement, capacity building, and partnership development, enhances the attractiveness of proposals and accelerates funding decisions.

Expedited grant processes are essential for non-profit supporting healthcare workers effectively and efficiently. By establishing clear priorities, building strong partnerships, leveraging technology and innovation, engaging in capacity building, and demonstrating impact and sustainability, these organizations can accelerate funding decisions and secure timely resources to address the critical needs of frontline healthcare workers. As we navigate ongoing healthcare challenges, expediting grants for NGOs is paramount in ensuring timely support for those on the front lines of healthcare delivery.

— — — — — -

Unity Bands Inc. is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting low-income healthcare workers and providing credible public health information to at-risk communities.

Addressing the Mental Health Challenges of Caregivers

by Kana Pham, Unity Bands Correspondent, January 26, 2024

Courtesy of Shutterstock

Caregivers frequently deal with severe mental health issues while juggling the demands of taking care of their loved ones. The psychological and physical toll that are providing care takes, along with social expectations and problems that are frequently disregarded, can have a significant adverse effect on caregivers’ wellbeing. It becomes crucial in this situation to identify, deal with, and provide active support for caregivers to preserve their mental health. This blog post examines the difficulties experienced by caregivers and highlights the vital requirement for specialized support networks to guarantee their general wellbeing and emotional toughness.

1. The Invisible Struggle:

Caregiving can be emotionally and physically demanding, leading to stress, anxiety, and burnout. The relentless responsibilities of managing someone else’s health, coupled with the emotional toll of witnessing their struggles, can take a toll on caregivers’ mental health. The invisible nature of their struggles often means that their own well-being is overlooked.

2. Isolation and Loneliness:

Caregivers may experience social isolation as their caregiving duties limit their ability to engage in social activities. This isolation can contribute to feelings of loneliness and a sense of being overwhelmed. For example, in a study regarding “1283 family caregivers of people with mild-to-moderate dementia living in Great Britain”, more than half of the participants reported loneliness. Recognizing and addressing the need for social connection is crucial to supporting caregivers’ mental health.

3. Balancing Act:

Many caregivers juggle caregiving responsibilities with work, family, and personal commitments. The constant balancing act can lead to exhaustion and feelings of guilt when caregivers struggle to meet all their obligations. Providing resources and assistance in managing these responsibilities is vital for their mental well-being.

4. Financial Stress:

Caregiving often comes with financial implications, including the cost of medical care, medications, and potential loss of income due to reduced working hours or leaving the workforce altogether. Financial stress can exacerbate mental health challenges, highlighting the need for financial support mechanisms for caregivers.

Moreover, many individuals are devoting unpaid care to their family members as the costs of caregiving help are getting higher. In 2021, according to AARP, The American Association of Retired Persons, unpaid family caregivers across the U.S. provided $600 billion worth of care, which recognized “a $130 billion increase in unpaid contributions from the 2019 report”.

5. Lack of Recognition:

Caregivers may not receive the recognition they deserve for their vital role in healthcare. The absence of acknowledgment and appreciation can contribute to feelings of invisibility and undervaluation. Raising awareness about the challenges caregivers face and acknowledging their contributions is essential for their mental health.

How to support health care workers

Supporting Caregivers’ Mental Health:

1. Respite Care: Offering respite care services allows caregivers to take a break and prioritize self-care, reducing burnout and promoting mental well-being.

2. Counseling Services: Access to counseling services provides caregivers with a safe space to express their feelings, cope with stress, and develop strategies for managing their mental health.

3. Healthcare workers support groups: Connecting caregivers with peer support groups creates a sense of community, fostering understanding and shared experiences that combat feelings of isolation.

4. Flexible Work Policies: Implementing flexible work policies can help caregivers balance their professional and caregiving responsibilities, reducing stress and promoting mental health.

5. Healthcare workers support groups: Providing financial support or access to resources can alleviate the economic burden on caregivers, reducing financial stress.

6. Public Awareness Campaigns: Raising awareness about the challenges caregivers face and highlighting their contributions helps combat the stigma surrounding caregiving and promotes a culture of appreciation.

It is crucial to acknowledge and address the challenges that healthcare workers and caregivers face daily. The relentless demands of their roles, both mentally and physically, necessitate robust support systems. Recognizing the need for mental and financial support is not only an ethical imperative but also an investment in the sustainability of healthcare. By providing the necessary resources, we empower healthcare professionals and caregivers to navigate their roles with resilience, ultimately making a lasting impact in healthcare by fostering a culture of well-being and sustainability.

Unity Bands Inc. is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting low-income healthcare workers and providing credible public health information to at-risk communities. The valiant efforts of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and countless other professionals have been at the forefront, tirelessly combating illnesses, providing care, and striving to save lives. However, as we navigate through these challenging times, it has become increasingly evident that the healthcare culture needs a significant overhaul, placing a stronger emphasis on supporting these frontline heroes.

The Current Landscape: Challenges Faced by Healthcare Workers

Healthcare workers face many challenges affecting their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Long hours, critical decision-making, exposure to infectious diseases, and the weight of immense responsibility contribute to high-stress levels and burnout among these professionals. The pandemic has exacerbated these challenges, with healthcare systems worldwide grappling with overwhelming patient loads, shortages of critical supplies, and strained resources.

The toll on healthcare workers’ mental health cannot be overstated. According to an article released by CNN in 2021, over 1 in 5 healthcare workers experience feelings of anxiety and depression due to the trauma experienced during the pandemic. The constant fear of contracting the virus, witnessing the suffering of patients, and the emotional burden of delivering difficult news to families have led to significant emotional strain.

Moreover, healthcare workers have faced unprecedented levels of burnout. The relentless demands of their roles, coupled with limited time for rest and recovery, have led to exhaustion and a high attrition rate within the healthcare workforce. The consequences of this burnout can directly impact patient care, as exhausted and overworked healthcare professionals may need help to provide the highest quality of service.

The Need for Support: Acknowledging and Addressing the Challenges

It is imperative to recognize the critical role of healthcare workers and the need to support them adequately. Efforts to address these challenges must encompass various aspects:

1. Mental Health Support: Healthcare workers need access to mental health resources, including counseling services, support groups, and initiatives aimed at reducing the stigma surrounding seeking help for mental health issues.

2. Work-Life Balance: Implementing measures to ensure reasonable working hours, adequate rest periods, and time off is crucial in preventing burnout and supporting overall well-being.

3. Adequate Resources: Hospitals and healthcare institutions must ensure that their staff can access necessary resources, including personal protective equipment (PPE), medical supplies, and staffing levels that enable them to perform their duties effectively.

4. Recognition and Appreciation: Acknowledging the dedication and sacrifices of healthcare workers through public recognition, gratitude initiatives, and tangible rewards can boost morale and motivation.

5. Training and Education: Continuous training and education programs can equip healthcare professionals with the necessary skills to navigate evolving healthcare challenges effectively.

Supporting healthcare workers isn’t just a moral obligation; it’s essential for sustaining a robust healthcare system. Their well-being directly impacts patient outcomes, quality of care, and the resilience of healthcare infrastructure.

As individuals, communities, and policymakers, we must advocate for systemic changes that prioritize the well-being of healthcare workers. By fostering a culture of support, appreciation, and understanding, we can ensure that these heroes receive the care and recognition they deserve while continuing to provide exceptional care to those in need.

Here at Unity Bands, we aim to financially support the low-paid, undervalued, and essential healthcare workers and promote credible public health information to at-risk communities to inform decision-making. Only by providing adequate support, resources, and recognition can we ensure the resilience and sustainability of our healthcare systems while honoring the dedication of those who selflessly serve on the frontlines of care.

Unity Bands Inc. is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting low-income healthcare workers and providing credible public health information to at-risk communities. unitybands.org @unitybandsorg

Their dedication and tireless efforts to save lives have been nothing short of remarkable. Yet, beneath the surface of their valiant work lies a troubling issue that demands our immediate attention: medical debt. Even healthcare workers themselves are not immune to the financial burdens incurred by seeking medical care in the current environment. In the light of CNN reports of UAMS suing thousands of their patients and employees, this article highlights this complex issue and emphasizes the need to support healthcare workers in the current healthcare landscape.

The Hidden Financial Struggles

Medical debt is a harsh reality for millions of Americans. Even those with health insurance are not immune, as copayments, deductibles, and out-of-network expenses can quickly spiral out of control. Medical bills can be shockingly high, pushing individuals and families to the brink of financial ruin. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated this issue, with many people facing unexpected healthcare expenses due to the virus.

The Crisis of Medical Debt on Healthcare Workers

While the world recognizes the bravery and resilience of healthcare workers, it is vital to acknowledge the harsh realities they face outside the hospital walls. Medical debt is a pervasive issue, affecting not only the general population but healthcare professionals as well. Despite their invaluable contributions to society, they too grapple with the financial toll of healthcare expenses.

Healthcare workers, who are at the forefront of the healthcare system, often face unique challenges. While they may have access to health insurance, it doesn’t always cover the entirety of their medical expenses. Copayments, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs can accumulate quickly, adding to their financial stress. Moreover, healthcare workers, like any other profession, can also experience unexpected medical emergencies or chronic health conditions that lead to substantial debt.

The COVID-19 Pandemic’s Impact

The pandemic has only underscored the vulnerabilities within the U.S. healthcare system. Healthcare workers have been on the frontlines, facing the virus head-on, and their sacrifices have been immeasurable. However, many have also faced furloughs, layoffs, or reduced hours due to the shifting healthcare landscape during the pandemic. This loss of income, combined with potential health costs associated with contracting COVID-19, has pushed many healthcare workers into financial distress.

UAMS accused of suing thousands over medical bills

An example of University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’s situation where the Arkansas public hospital faced significant controversy during the COVID-19 pandemic as it sued thousands of patients, including hundreds of its own employees, over medical bills. This legal action was met with widespread criticism and raised ethical concerns, given the challenging circumstances brought about by the pandemic. The lawsuits not only added to the financial burdens of individuals already grappling with health-related challenges but also led to questions about the institution’s priorities and its commitment to supporting its own staff and community during a public health crisis. The situation at UAMS underscores the broader issues surrounding medical debt, billing practices, and the need for more compassionate and equitable approaches to healthcare financing, especially during times of crisis.

The Emotional Toll

Medical debt is not just a financial burden; it also exacts an emotional toll on individuals. Healthcare workers, who dedicate their lives to healing others, often find themselves grappling with the irony of their own financial struggles due to medical bills. The stress and anxiety caused by this burden can impact their overall well-being, job performance, and job satisfaction.

A Call for Immediate Support

The urgency of addressing medical debt among healthcare workers cannot be overstated. These individuals are essential to our society’s well-being, and their financial stability is crucial to maintaining a strong and resilient healthcare system. It’s time to recognize that no one, regardless of their profession, should face crippling medical debt simply for seeking the care they need.

To truly support healthcare workers in the current environment, we must advocate for fair compensation, comprehensive benefits, mental health support, and solutions to alleviate the burden of student loan debt. By taking these steps, we can ensure that those who dedicate their lives to caring for others can do so without the looming specter of financial hardship, ultimately leading to a healthier, more resilient healthcare system for all.

The financial burdens of medical debt affect not only the patients but also the healthcare workers themselves. These dedicated professionals, who have been our pillars of strength during the pandemic, deserve our support and understanding. As we continue to navigate the complex landscape of healthcare in the United States, it is imperative that we come together to support healthcare workers to ensure that they are not burdened by the very system they so tirelessly serve, and that they can continue to provide the vital care our communities depend on.

Unity Bands Inc. is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting low-income healthcare workers and providing credible public health information to at-risk communities. Even though things are slowly coming back to normal, it is impossible to deny that we haven’t changed in some way or the other. We have all heard and experienced first-hand how this pandemic has led to a deterioration of mental health globally. But what about frontline workers? They go through overwhelming and stressful situations all the time as part of their jobs. The pandemic must’ve been easy for them, right?

Studies show that before the pandemic, those working in healthcare already showed higher risks of suffering from psychiatric disorders, stress and burnout. In fact, doctors are said to suffer from higher rates of suicide than the general population. After covid-19 began, these feelings of distress have only exacerbated. Every day health care workers had to expose themselves to scenarios where they were forced to continuously witness the direct effects of the pandemic, while the rest of us stayed at home.

Many studies have come forward with data on how frontline workers have been affected, and all of them had the same things to say. Frontline workers are battling — more than ever before — negative emotions and feelings of being stretched out too thin. In just three months, frontline workers reported an increase in emotional and physical exhaustion. According to a survey hosted by Mental Health America (MHA), 70% of the 1,119 frontline workers that took the survey reported difficulty in sleeping, 63% reported feeling work-related dread and 67% reported feeling too tired. Many reported feeling compassion fatigue and even questioning their career path. Mental issues directly infected the physical health of these workers, with 57% of them reporting changes in appetite and 56% reporting headaches and stomachaches. Let’s explore in detail some of the reasons why frontline workers had it so much harder than us during the pandemic.

One of the major cause of drop in mental health of frontline workers was worry over getting infected themselves or the risk of infecting loved ones. 76% of frontline workers reported they were worried about infecting their kids. Many also worried about not being able to spend enough time with their kids or be a present parent in their lives. Covid-19 also brought along with it a sense of helplessness as frontline workers were forced to deal with lack of resources such as shortage of beds, ventilators and personal protective equipment (PPE), all of which hindered their ability to provide the best service they could.

Another interesting issue that has arose is what we call moral injuries. This is used to describe psychological distress due to engaging in or witnessing acts that conflict with their moral beliefs and values. These may occur in various forms. Such as before covid-19, critical decisions would always be made after getting input from the patients’ families. Now, family members are no longer allowed in hospitals. Doctors and nurses now have to make decisions that affect the survival of their patients, many of which will lead to a negative outcome. Frontline workers need to prioritize one important set of values over another such as caring for their patients with contagious diseases over keeping their family members safe from infection. These injuries have a long lasting psychological, spiritual, behavioral and social impact on frontline workers.

Lastly, many frontline workers felt that they had limited coping mechanisms involving social support during the pandemic. Due to social distancing, talking and taking comfort from loved ones became even more difficult. 39% of frontline workers said that they felt they had inadequate emotional support. Imagine dealing with all this and then also enduring added stress of difficulty in obtaining daily essentials and school closures.

Frontline workers make up an integral part of our society. The work they do cannot be imitated by another. It is essential we provide practical support such as implementing infection-control measures, proactively identify workers that are at high risk of physiological distress and monitor them, and develop evidence-based prevention and treatment tools to prevent long-term psychological trauma. More support groups should be made available for frontline workers to access, and their family members should be given awareness on the importance of their support in these challenging times. We should all play a part in supporting, appreciating and helping in any way we can so that frontline workers can continue to provide their commendable services without feeling like they are losing a part of themselves.

Natalia Islam is an enthusiastic and curious Biomedical Scientist in the making with extensive background knowledge and appreciation of life at the cellular level.

Covid-19 and its variants — Should we really be worried?

Natalia Islam, Unity Bands Research Correspondent, February 9, 2022

Public Health Professional courtesy of cdc.gov

Seems like every other week the news of another covid-19 variant is taking over the news by storm. This is often met with confusion, anger and most of all, hopelessness as the seemingly never ending covid-19 story continues on. However, maybe these variants are not as serious or potent as we make them to be. To understand this, we must delve into what variants are and how they come about.

A variant is the genetic code of the virus that may contain one or more mutations. A mutation refers to a single change in a virus’s genome. Mutations frequently occur in viruses. However, despite popular belief, only a few can actually change the characteristics of the virus and affect its potency. Majority of the mutations found in new and upcoming variants affect parts of the virus not involved in infection. Thus, they are still susceptible to mainstream vaccines and are not a huge cause of concern. Variants that are more susceptible to the vaccines slowly disappear from the population — such as the beta and gamma variants — while some others persist.

All emerging variants are characterized into different categories based on the variant proportions at the national and regional levels, and the potential effect of its mutations on the effectiveness of medical countermeasures, severity of the disease, and disease transmissibility.

According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), 10 variants are being continuously monitored in the United States. Out of these, only 2 have yet been classified as Variants of Concern (VOC) — Delta and Omicron.

Delta

This variant was first discovered in India and led to a surge in cases. Data suggests that it is twice as contagious as the original virus, and may cause more severe illness in unvaccinated people then previous variants. This is due to the changes observed in its spike proteins. Spike proteins are usually used by viruses to penetrate into host cells and cause infection. Spike proteins are usually used by viruses to penetrate into host cells and cause infection. This makes them great targets for vaccines and other forms of therapeutics. Substitutions in these may lead to reduced susceptibility to available monoclonal antibody therapeutics or reduced neutralization by vaccines.

Omicron

On November 24th, 2021, the Omicron variant was first identified in South Africa. The WHO classified it as VOC due to the increase in Covid infections in South Africa that coincided with the detection of Omicron. This variant has many spike proteins that are different from the original virus. While larger case laboratory and epidemiological studies are needed to access how the Omicron variant differs from delta and the original, a few studies show it is thought to be more transmissible, cause a more severe infection and may be less susceptible to vaccines. This is due to the fact that this variant contains more changes in the spike proteins than any other variant yet. In addition, it contains 15 mutations in the receptor binding domain itself, which is a part of the virus that is located on the spike protein and directly affects its ability to enter host cells, and thus may have a significant impact on the efficacy of therapy.

In conclusion, new variants are inevitable but only a few should be regarded with more concern than the rest. While some newer variants might show less susceptibility to vaccines, it is still our best protection and will continue to play an important part in protecting against hospitalization and death, and in helping control the spread of the pandemic.

Natalia Islam is an enthusiastic and curious Biomedical Scientist in the making with extensive background knowledge and appreciation of life at the cellular level. I knew from the start Unity Bands had a limited lifespan. We literally hosted our launch party three days before the first vaccines became available in the U.S. I vowed to do this Unity Bands thing until COVID was no longer a problem and the medical facilities no longer needed COVID funding. Even though the U.S. is drastically different now than in early December 2020 with life returning to normal for many, the invisible threat is still moving around us. The variants are a problem, there is a nationwide nursing shortage, and secondary illnesses caused by COVID-19 are being studied. There’s going to be a long and nasty tail associated with this pandemic. And as we exit this dark tunnel, I am reminded that a lot of people did not make it to the other side.

Unity Bands will continue past our $10K goal. We will have a bigger impact. Several things in the works are a one-year strategic plan and a 501(c)(3) application. Partnerships with community-focused people and having more volunteers will be vital to success.

Again, thank you for your support.

Hope. Fight. Unity.

John

John Schirrippa, Founder
