Put things in a permanent place, store things consciously instead of throwing them in a drawer thoughtlessly, or keeping your house tidy. Everyone is familiar with a number of tips on how to lose things less quickly, but sometimes the damage has already been done and you really have to look for your lost item. That is why we give you the best tips to find your lost item as quickly as possible! Stay calm.

When a headless chicken runs around in a panicky mood, nobody ever helped. Apart from the fact that stress is very unhealthy for you, you can no longer think clearly and finding your item will certainly not go any faster. So sit down for a moment, breathe in and breathe out, read these tips, and try to calm yourself down a bit — you’re going to find that item.

Review your steps
You walk to the kitchen to get something, but as soon as you have stepped into the kitchen you have already forgotten what you came to do. Recognizable? Often you walk back to the place where you thought of what to get and then it suddenly comes to your mind. You can also use the same trick to find your lost item! Think about where you last saw the item, or when you last used it. This makes your search a lot clearer. Also try to think about what kind of jacket you were wearing, or which bag you had with you at the moment of loss. Also check all pockets and pockets of the bag.

Search the logical places
You lost your bunch of keys. Does it make sense to look in the fridge? Most likely not. Save yourself a lot of time by first checking the logical places, such as the cupboard at the front door, all the compartments in your bag, or all other places where you often keep your keys. Tip 1 applies here too: stay calm. If you search very quickly, you will look more often with your proverbial nose than your eyes. How often do you panic through a drawer to find that important letter to no avail? Then a week later you open the same drawer and you suddenly find the letter there, while you really did a good search there …

Visualize the item in your mind
Researchers at the University of Chicago have discovered that humans have brain cells that help us find things. Those cells are in the center of the brain that controls our eyes. These search cells can adjust to the correct color, shape and movement. By visualizing what we are looking for, for example a yellow bicycle key, we can find it more easily through the search cells. When you look around and an item with this description flashes past, the search cells become active: Gotcha!

The big cleaning
Have you looked at all the logical places, but still not found your item? Then you really have to look everywhere. Don’t randomly mess up all the cabinets, you don’t want more chaos after all. Work in a structured way and immediately tidy up the room you are looking for. By cleaning up you are more consciously engaged in searching places. Don’t forget to look between the cushions of the sofa, in folders with papers, behind your bed, by the trash can, the item could be anywhere!

Two see more than one
Did the previous tips not help? Then it is time to call in auxiliary troops! Have friends seen your item or is it at their house? Ask someone to help you search. Who knows, the fresh look may help you find your item even faster. Also, your friend might be able to think of a place to search that you haven’t thought of yourself!

iLost
Worst case scenario: you have really lost your item. Both you and your friends really have no idea where your item could be. Does this mean that all hope is now really lost? Of course not! iLost currently has nearly 50,000 found items, so there’s a good chance that your item will be there! Check online on the website whether your item has been found.

Tips to find your lost item was originally published in iLost on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

You will agree with me, anything with an image becomes automatically easier, friendlier and memorable, doesn’t it? Even though I have to admit, some things are better off left for your own creative imagination. Like reading an intriguing novel — associating the words with images in your head, that is fun. What is also fun is publishing lost and found images of items to facilitate the search for your customers.

Introducing images in lost and found solutions

The revolution is here! — disrupting the lost and found industry is what iLost do. The lost and found solution that iLost provides enables your employees to take a picture of found items and publish it on iLost for your customers to see. They then add a description with unique details about the item that only the owner would know. These internal notes they can use to verify ownership of the found item in case of a claim. After they hit publish, within 30 seconds, the item is searchable on iLost for your customers!

The beauty in this is that your customers can search for their found items on iLost 24/7, 365 days a year. No more worries about weekends or public holidays. All they have to do is visit iLost, search for their item by typing in the name or keyword if you will (e.g. keys, iPhone, bag).

If their item has been registered, they can make a claim which will be verified by your employees, thanks to the internal notes made during the registration process. The customer will be automatically notified when their claim is approved, and they are indeed the rightful owner of the found item. The only decision left for the customer to make is, to either pick up the item in person or have it shipped. Lost and found solution simplified

Lost and found images will boost your lost property process

According to research, our brains can interpret images much quicker than text which is why images are used to instantly communicate a brand, service or product. Images make it easier for us to grasp the depth and context of something. When a customer has lost something, looking for it can be a really tough pill to swallow, so how do you make the experience for them as smoothly and stress-free as possible? — By publishing images of lost and found items on iLost, and watch your return rate skyrocket.

iLost facts

Thanks to the way iLost has introduced publishing images on lost and found items, a total of 72.8% of online matches have been recorded. This is due to the fact that your customers can immediately see an item and tell if it is theirs or not. Moreover, they can narrow down their search with the help of advance filter such as the place an item was found, the date it was registered etc. all provided and supported by iLost.

No more writing novels of description emails, or pushing phone calls back and forth. Everything is handled in one place; iLost. From the moment you publish the found item right up to the point of reuniting the item with the rightful owner, everything is done on iLost.

Simplicity brought to you by iLost through images. Your customers will love the autonomy and the fact that they can practically ‘browse’ while searching for their lost item. Apart from focusing on your core business, your employees will only have to verify the ownership of placed claims and voilà, another smile conjured!

For more information visit iLost and schedule a demo today! Calendly.

foto cred. Karolina Grabowska

Please picture these scenarios;

Scenario #1: If you find a wallet containing cards such as an ID-card, a Gym-membership card, an invitation card with the email address and telephone number of the owner, would you go through the trouble trying to locate the owner and return their wallet?

Scenario #2: Let’s say you find the same wallet, only this time, it has some cash in it, ca. €100. What will you do? Will you still be willing to find the owner and return their wallet?

That is quite an interesting situation, isn’t it? We all know it is our moral obligation to return the wallet regardless of it containing money or not, but there is also that temptation and throbbing need for extra cash. You might just keep the money and return the empty wallet and justify your action with a ton of reasons. Or maybe you would assume that anyone in your position would keep the money for themselves as well. Well, that is where you would be wrong because as it turns out, people are more honest than you might think.

The shocking truth about honesty

In May 2019 an article was published on Science based on research conducted by behavioural scientists to determine civic honesty around the world. In this study, the researchers prepared over 17,000 ‘lost wallets’ and handed them over to employed collaborators who posed as tourists.

The prepared wallets were transparent (which made it easier to see the content without having to open it) and contained a small amount of money ca. $13 or no money, a key, a means to contact the owner, and a grocery list written in the local language which suggested the owner is a local.

The collaborators handed over these wallets to officials working at the front desk of public and private institutions such as banks, museums, police stations, & hotels in 355 big cities across 40 countries.

They left the ‘lost’ or ‘found’ wallets with the officials and quickly left the premises with the excuse that they were in a hurry and hoped the official could take care of finding the owner of the wallet.

What the researchers were hoping to find out is if within 100 days, the wallets would be reported/returned or not and if the availability of money in some wallets would make a difference.

Money is not everything

The results of the research were shockingly positive. The researchers found that people made more effort to return wallets containing money than the ones without money. This happened in 38 out of the 40 countries they experimented with. As a matter of fact, they repeated the experiment with slightly more money than before ca. $95 to see if the results will surge, but the opposite remained true — People were even more likely to return the wallets.

According to the researchers, there could be several reasons why people were more likely to return lost wallets when it contained more money rather than less money. For example, some people were worried about legal penalties for failing to return a wallet and others said that failing to return a wallet felt a lot like stealing, especially when more money was involved. For more details, read the study, published in Science

iLost to the rescue

To quote Dr David Tannenbaum one of the researchers of the University of Utah, “When you feel you can trust others and people aren’t deceptive or lying to you, the world feels like a better place.” Researches like this remind us of the goodness in humans and that people do not live by economic, materialistic and self-gain alone. Whether it is a moral obligation or a deep-seated feeling of guilt that made people return the wallets, one thing is clear — we care for each other.

It may not seem so obvious, but this research just proved it. And it also proves that we need one central lost and found management solution. One place where every found item around the globe can be brought together so that they can be reunited with their rightful owners. iLost is well on its way to becoming this place. iLost.co is a lost and found solution provider with the friendliest and most easy to use platform you will ever come across.

How iLost works

Say, you found a wallet, (only this is not an experiment but real life) your first instinct is to check for contact details of the owner, so you can return the wallet. Unfortunately, there is none. What to do?

All you need to do is to take out your phone, go to ilost.co, click on the button ‘I’ve found something’ (you cannot miss it When you visit the home page. It is literally one of the things that pops’ in your face like a renaissance painting) name the item e.g. ‘a wallet’, take a picture of the wallet, add a description, where you found it, your contact details and hit publish. Within a few moments, it will be searchable on iLost.

When the happy loser finds his wallet on iLost, thanks to you, he/she can make a claim which you can approve. If it is indeed the owner, you can hand over his wallet and with that, your good deed of the year is checked! How awesome is that?

iLost for organisations

If you are an organisation, the process is similar and this will take a tone load of work off your employees. All they need to do is take a picture of the found item, register it using the iLost for Business application (provided by iLost), add a description and within 30secs, it is searchable on iLost.

For more information visit iLost and check out this amazing illustrative infographic depicting how iLost works.

The shocking truth about honesty was originally published in iLost on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Picture this: Your customer, Gisele has been working all month which is fine because she loves what she does. But even so, she still needs some time to herself to recharge, to get back in touch with her star player, herself!

Luckily enough for her, a long weekend presents itself, and she decides to take a city trip to London. Masks, hand sanitizers, wet wipes amongst others made up her belongings.

Her trip has been fun. She finally had that drink with that one friend (honestly, it’s been a long time coming), she visited all the attractive and touristic sites the city has to offer including riding the sophisticated metro system. She is proud of herself; she could get around the city without getting lost and most importantly, she feels energized and fresh like a new-born.

Gisele gets back home only to realize she’s lost your camera. She probably left it behind on the metro or train. What to do?

Searching online for the website of the organisation is the first step and maybe finding an email address or a phone number to call. Some even have forms for you to fill. That sounds all too complicated and strenuous, doesn’t it? Especially when she is anxious about getting her stuff back!

Well, what if I told you there is an even easier way for Gisele to get reunited with her camera and for organisations to make their lives easier in just 4 steps?

Yes, that’s right! You as an organisation are just four steps away — well, actually five steps away, because, by the end of step four, you will be begging me for a last and final step; which is how to get in contact with a company that specializes in turning ‘hassle into happiness!’

You will not believe how easy and simple it actually is for your organisation to transform their boring (pardon my language) out of date system of managing lost property. I bet most of you reading this article, still use the old-fashioned way of filing lost property namely; handwritten ledgers, excel forms, boxes, phone calls and sending emails back and forth! Or you might already be using some SaaS solutions provider which would be a good thing.

However, imagine the level of internal efficiency, how much time, stress, and employee breakdowns you could avoid by just making things easier for your organisation, yourself and above all your colleagues. They are the ones on the frontline here. In 100 percent of the cases, they are the ones who have to withstand and bear the frustrated yell of a passenger because it is his third call, his property hasn’t been located, and he has to hold the line — yet again.

Before I get into these steps here is a fact, as you are already aware of: The internet is becoming more and more everyone’s go-to place in case of any slight inconvenience!

You have a headache, check online for symptoms of malaria. There is a huge possibility that headache and malaria are not related but who cares, the information is available free of charge online, on the internet.

Do you have wanderlust? Check online for cheap plane tickets. Did you lose your keys, bag or iPhone during a trip to the city? Check online for the lost and found page of the organization with email addresses or a phone number. You get where I am going with this right?

Now try to picture how frustrated your customers would be to go online only to realise that you do not have a dedicated lost and found page. Or you do have a page but there is a form to fill. (I mean, if I lost something, my priority will be to find and get my stuff back and not filling out some forms! I already do that enough when filing my tax returns.)

Other organisations have email addresses and phone numbers dedicated to lost property which is fine. But here is the problem, especially now during this Covid-19 crisis, it takes forever to get replies on your enquiries per phone or mail. Maybe because the organisation is short on manpower since they had to let people go at the beginning of this pandemic or employees are sick, on maternity leave or just too busy. Whatever the case, it can be very frustrating for the customer.

The uncertainty, not knowing if the organisation received your email, or they are not responding for the reason that they haven’t found your stuff can cut deep like a blade especially for someone who has zero chill like me. I would probably pass out from an anxiety attack.

My point is, nowadays, you can find (almost) everything on the internet. From cute little monkeys playing the clarinet to being able to find out the top 3 most found items in the London Underground which are mobile phones, single debit cards / credit cards, and travel card wallets so why not every found property?

There are a few companies out there that offer lost and found cloud management solutions.

We are living in the digital age and these companies are changing the way lost property is being handled. They offer SaaS solutions to organisations with the aim of assisting them in managing their lost property. They act as middlemen between you as an organisation and your customers. You have companies in the likes of iLost, MissingX, Have it back. Amongst all, iLost really got me hooked with their candor, modesty, and time efficiency.

Originally founded in the Netherlands, they are disrupting and reinventing the lost and found industry. Handling lost property has never been easier with the help of iLost. They assist you from the moment you find an item right up to the moment it is being returned to the rightful owner. Many organisations in Europe such as ARRIVA (Deutsche Bahn), Transdev and Keolis are already using iLost which is why I think they’d not only be a great addition to your organisation, but they will also create value for your customers by pimping-up your lost property process. Also, if this doesn’t boost your customer experience and satisfaction level, then I do not know what will.

At this moment you might be thinking it is probably a complicated system and what not…

But no! Four steps are all it takes. Only four steps from finding the item to putting a smile on the fortunate customer’s face.

I came across this beautifully illustrated infographic of iLost which describes every step individually. Take a look for yourself.

So, if you as an organisation aren’t already thinking of ways to optimise your lost property process, then I am sorry to say this: you are missing out! This might be the last touchpoint with your customers. This is as important as wanting to generate sales or profit. ‘Little things’ like this are those that make all the difference!

Do you already have systems like this in place or are you still thinking of switching?

Do not miss out! Put your lost and found processes in the clouds! Get in contact with iLost today!

See why you will need to change your Lost and Found process and improve Customer Experience! was originally published in iLost on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Yesterday afternoon, I had an interesting but rather sad conversation with a friend of mine. Don’t worry, it wasn’t like somebody dying sad or euthanizing your pet sad. It was more of a bad customer experience sad.

Customers are kings

What are businesses without their customers? Your customers or clients (whatever terminology you prefer — I will stick with customers) are the most important part of doing business. They are the reason why you wake up in the morning or work 10+ hours shifts to do what you do. Without them, you could just sleep till kingdom come because you will be out of business. Many organizations out there understand the importance of their customers and the purpose to fulfil their customers’ needs.

They put a lot of effort into fulfilling that need and some go the extra mile to outdo their promises. To give more than their customers are asking for, staying a couple of steps ahead of them. Organizations dedicate whole departments to customer services, CRMs, etc. and yet, important aspects such as customer retention, engagement, and satisfaction still come short.

We are living in times when consumers are more willing and faster to switch brands than models changing outfits during fitting. It’s the era of the internet. Alternatives are around every corner and the term ‘customer loyalty’ is taking a whole new meaning.

Customer satisfaction

Customer satisfaction is amongst other things the most predominant factors responsible for the success (or failure) of any business. Which is why it is important to keep track of this and find ways to keep improving it. A satisfied customer is not only more loyal to you, but he/she also turns into a cost-free brand ambassador.

If you treat them like family, give them a sense of belonging, they will build trust in you and that is the foundation of every strong relationship. Once your customers have trust in you, they will not be able to help themselves but sing your praises whenever your brand or product’s name comes up. They will sing your praises even better than Beyoncé sings hallelujah!

I know at this point you are probably wondering why am I lecturing you about the importance of customers, their satisfaction, and whatnot, considering I introduced this post with having a sad conversation with a friend. Well, my introduction and all the things I have mentioned have a lot in common. And also, did I mention this story has a happy ending? So please, stay with me because I am yet to unveil the secret called iLost.

The story/ the experience

So, here is what happened. I was home when I received a phone call from my friend. She sounded serious. I could tell she was worried by the sound of her voice. She had forgotten her compact mirror on the bus she frequently takes to and from work. I know you might think it’s just a compact mirror. But with this one in particular she had an emotional attachment. It was given to her by her grandma shortly before she passed away a few years ago. She told me with certainty that she had forgotten it on that bus because she didn’t go anywhere else after work. She realized that it was gone, minutes later when she was already home.

Fast-forward, I offered to assist her in the retrieval. The first thing we did was to check on the website of the bus company about lost and found items — there was nothing about that on there, so we called their office and after being on hold for roughly 20 mins, they were no help either. All they could say is ‘come by the station, as we have a box full of lost and found items. If the bus employee found your stuff, then it will be in there.’ We frequented that office and fingered that box for a week straight. Thankfully, we found her compact mirror.

Even though we found her compact mirror, I still think that the way they handle their lost and found items is just wrong. It is such a hassle and frustration to retrieve your lost item. During this process, I was on the internet searching for lost and found offices in our area. The thought was that maybe someone found her compact mirror and handed it over to a local office. There was no luck on that end either, but I stumbled upon a great company that provides software that helps companies to effectively manage the found items on their establishments, buses, trains, etc.

The company is called iLost. I also have to mention that at the time, I was searching for a graduation internship. Fortunately for me, they had an open internship position but not with a graduation assignment. Fast-forward a couple of emails and phone calls later, they decided to put together a rewarding and challenging assignment and bring me on board (see my previous blog post for more about that).

What is iLost

iLost is an online platform providing management software to companies in a vast variety of fields ranging from public transportation to hotels, airports, universities, hospitals, museums, and even municipalities. The software helps you effectively manage the found items on your premises. It will make connecting found items with their rightful owners look like child’s play (and no, I don’t get paid for saying this hahaha…).

How it works

Returning found items to their rightful owners is a customer service that cannot be undermined. It is the little things that build strong bonds. The software that iLost provides as a service, will facilitate the whole process for you and besides saving you time, it will cut your amount of phone calls in half! The only thing your employees will have to do is to take a picture of the found item, upload it, and add a description of the item. As easy as posting a picture on Instagram.

Using the iLost widget every found item is directly visible on the website of your company. This way, your customers can check all found items by themselves from every corner in the world. With the help of advanced filters such as keywords, dates, etc, they can identify their lost possessions with ease. All they will need is a device with internet access, and they are good to go.

Once they have identified their lost property, the last step will be to claim it by describing characteristics of the item. This claim will be checked with the description provided, and if it is a match they will be notified. The only tough decision to be made will be whether to pick up the item in person or let it be delivered back home. P.S. No login required.

Steps towards having an effective lost and found process

I cannot stress this enough. The little things are those that make all the difference! Having a warehouse, room, or a box full of found items is good but not enough. Half of these things never make it back to their rightful owner. This can be very frustrating for your customers hence damaging your image in their face. A bundle of reasons could be responsible for that, but we can not also neglect the fact that systems like that are not effective.

Instead of telling your customers how much you appreciate them, how much they mean to you, what customer loyalty tricks you have in place — show them how much you care! Show them why they matter, show them that you care as much about their stuff as they do. At the end of the day, that is what matters. That is what they will remember because actions speak louder than words.

You have to be proactive! You have to recognize lost and found as a serious process within your company. This step will create engagement within your organization and will also enforce the responsibilities of the employees assigned to it.

Choose a lost and found management software

After you’ve established the importance of the lost and found process within your organization, you will have to choose or better yet, acquire a lost and found management software. The software that iLost provides, for example, is a perfect fit with a 24/7 online service. With everything being online nowadays, iLost brings your lost and found department to the homes of your customers.

Setting up a system like this does not only put you steps ahead of your competitors but also strengthens the bond between you and your customers. Every time, your customers will literally be one click away from getting their minds blown by how easy it is to get reunited with their lost possessions.

Have you had experiences like this before? How does the process look like at your organization?

Yep, iLost will make your customers fall in love with you.
