I wanted to find a creative way to display some prints in my daughter’s room. As a keen needle felter, I decided to get out my needle and wool and create a garland to hold a selection of family photos, going for a colour scheme that would tie in with my daughter’s newly painted pink wall.

Hearts felt like the perfect choice to complement a photo collection of much loved family and friends, but the options of what you could make to decorate your garland are endless (depending on your felting skills of course!).

For speed, ease and to achieve a uniform size and shape I used a heart shaped cookie cutter (a handy shortcut for needle felting basic shapes) and then threaded them on to jute string, spacing them roughly 4 inches apart. Small pegs are readily available online and I went for a mix of clear and wooden pegs to hold the photos in place.

It was a simple process to upload my selection of favourite family photos to the OddPrints website and enter my custom measurements. I wanted square prints and opted for 4 x 4 inches, the distance between the hearts on my garland. The recently updated editing page also gave me the option to adjust the colour and brightness of my images, which was brilliant and really easy.

The images arrived beautifully printed on 6" x 4" paper and I was thrilled with the quality. I simply needed to trim off the excess border from the top and bottom with scissors to get my 4" x 4" prints ready for hanging. My daughter couldn’t stop looking through her prints and was keen to help hang them (luckily the matte lustre finish they came with seems a lot less susceptible to little finger prints than a gloss finish!). She is delighted with the finished garland and regularly marches visitors to the house into her room to admire it.

DIY Needle Felted Photo Garland: A Perfect Way to Display Memories was originally published in OddPrints on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Some tiny charm/locket size prints ready to be trimmed down with a scissors and added to a locket or charm.

1.Wedding Bouquet Charms can be a very lovely and important part of a bride or groom’s wedding outfit. They are normally used to carry your loved ones down the aisle with you, who are sadly unable to attend in person. Attach to a bouquet or button hole, or even your wedding dress.

You can find an array of beautiful wedding charms to purchase online, and after measuring the window/aperture, go to our Locket Photos page to help print the perfect charm-sized photo print of your lost family member or friend to fit inside.

DIY Cake Topper using homemade ‘Instax’ style polaroids

2.DIY Wedding Cake Topper using homemade ‘Instax’ style polaroids of the two of you. Simply print your custom size photos at OddPrints with a white background, then use a guillotine/paper cutter to trim the borders down (leaving extra at the bottom for the Polaroid look) and pop them on your cake for a unique, personalised bride & groom cake topper!

For tips on how to create DIY ‘Instax’ style polaroid prints, watch our Pinterest video.

Making homemade ‘Instax’ style polaroid prints out of old photos showcasing loving & happy memories

3.DIY Wedding Place Cards can be designed inexpensively at home using free software such as Canva, where you can easily upload your own photos from your phone and add text for guest names.

Get creative with your camera and do a ‘photoshoot’ of you & your partner, or browse through your old photo memories of holidays, days out, and romantic or adventurous moments together. Then simply print your pictures at OddPrints, using custom sizes of your choosing. You could use a paper cutter to accurately trim them down, and maybe use a paper clip to attach your wedding favours to the back of your place cards, like a little packet of seeds… (we did this at our wedding!)

DIY wedding place card

4.Homemade Wedding Table Names can be easily created in much the same way as the place cards. You can use old photos from your travels and happy memories, to create inexpensive table cards using Canva, OddPrints, a paper cutter, and weighted table card holder clips (plenty available online!), or small picture frames.

For our wedding we used city/place names we’d traveled to as a couple, and the places we’d met and got engaged, such as London, Bangkok, Provence, Italy, Dorset… These places had a nostalgic & emotional attachment for us and felt relevant to our special day.

Homemade wedding table names in little frames or held with a weighted clip

5.Photo Display at your wedding reception, showcasing all your wonderful memories from your time together as a loving couple. Your guests will love to see all your adventures and good times! And it makes for some good conversations too, especially any funny moments caught on camera!

You could use small photos to make a big collage, or spell your names or the word ‘Wedding’ or “Mr & Mrs’. Or hang photo prints from string with cute little wooden pegs. Choose any size you like to print, or go down the DIY polaroid route so you can add little notes about your memories too.

Photo Display showcasing special memories of the happy couple

PERSONAL NOTE: For our own wedding, we created a lot of our own homemade wedding decor & stationery ourselves, which was both enjoyable and cost effective, as well as adding an emotional & personal element. We hope these ideas have helped inspire you to get creative for your own wedding… Have an incredible day! 💍 💕

Please do tag us on social media if you share any of your own photo print wedding creations! https://www.instagram.com/oddprints

DIY Wedding Inspiration: 5 Photo Print Ideas for a Personalised Touch was originally published in OddPrints on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Once your image is uploaded, ‘Openable & Engravable Love Locket Dangle Charm’ will automatically be selected in the dropdown menu, this resizes your image at 1cm x 1cm (note: this equates to 0.39 inches) which is perfect for this particular locket charm - we have tested it!

The cropper tool (a blue square highlighting the middle part of your photo) shows the section of photo that will be printed as a small 1cm square print.

This example shows how the blue cropping tool has been resized (made smaller by dragging the corner inwards) & moved to capture the two heads in the middle. The dark grey area surrounding the blue square cropper will not be printed.

It’s a good idea to move and reduce the size of the cropper tool so it captures and centralises the faces of the people in your photo. The print will be nice and little so you’ll want to focus on the faces of the person/people in your picture. If you have too much background or bodies/legs of people, their heads will probably be too tiny.

These example images illustrate how cropping your photo incorrectly could affect the heads/faces when cutting into a circle shape.

Be sure to check the ‘How it looks when it’s been printed out’ section further down the editing page so you can get a better idea of how your image will look when resized and printed.

A useful option on the website is ‘TILING’ which is located under the “How it looks when it’s been printed out” section. This will automatically be turned ON. It duplicates your locket image and fits as many as possible onto one 6" x 4" page. This means you get multiple prints for the same cost as one, taking away the worry when trimming your prints to go into your locket — if you make a mistake, you have plenty more!

The example above shows how the print would look when printed on a 6x4" page. It also shows tiling turned ‘on’ so the image has been duplicated multiple times.

It’s a good idea to check your print at the checkout before paying by clicking on the thumbnail to enlarge & review it.

Once you receive your prints in the post, use a scissors to carefully trim them down to a circle shape and fit into your locket.

You will end up with the perfect gift or keepsake! :)

*Please note, the Pandora links provided in this article for purchasing a locket charm will take you to Pandora’s US site (us.pandora.net). I thought some framed photos would be a nice little present for them both so I went looking for something they could easily display in their rooms.

After a quick Google search I found these cute, inexpensive, colourful, paper frames online and ordered a bunch. They come in neat little packs with string and little pegs included.

These are standard 4" x 6" photo wallets with windows measuring 8cm x 11cm. It’s always best to get a ruler or measuring tape to check the exact size of the frames and windows before making an order for any prints.

I decided to make an order for prints sized 8.5cm x 11.5cm so there would be some overlap and no risk of seeing the edge of the image peeping in from the side of the window.

I easily uploaded my whole selection of photos to our website (www.oddprints.com) and then entered the custom measurements in the width and height boxes, also ensuring I chose centimetres from the dropdown menu. It’s useful to have all of your chosen images in one folder.

Once 8.5cm x 11.5cm had been entered for the first image, the custom sizes were then automatically kept the same for each following image as it loaded, making the editing process pretty quick and easy.

These screenshots are taken from our website.

How to print photos for a heart locket

We are often asked for tips on how to fill a heart shaped locket so we bought a beautiful locket from SILK PURSE, SOW’S EAR to show you how do it using OddPrints. Please also see How to print locket size photos for more details on ordering.

First you need to get the right measurements for your specific locket. Lay your locket down on a piece of paper to either trace around it, or to add dots at the widest five points of the heart. Due to the type of locket we have with 4 windows joined together, we opted for dots as tracing around the whole heart wasn’t possible.

Next use a ruler to draw a rectangle or square that fully contains the shape of the locket. Then measure it, width x height, in centimetres (inches are usually not suitable for locket sized photos as they’re a bit big).

Upload your chosen photo(s) to our website and enter the size of your locket into the “frame size” boxes. In this case we entered 2.2 x 2.2 and then selected centimetres from the drop down menu on the right.

If you are unsure about the exact size to order, it is advisable to order 2 or 3 different sizes — try subtracting a couple of millimetres from the measurement you took of the locket — this way you will have options when cutting. We decided to order duplicate images measuring 2cm x 2cm.

The screen shots above show the measurements added to the frame size boxes and centimetres selected in the unit dropdown box.

It is also a good idea to order more than one photo with different layouts so you can be sure you have one that will work perfectly when cut down to a heart shape. Make sure the images you upload have enough background around the subject’s face(s) so that they don’t get clipped off (i.e. not a photo with the face right to the corners).

This is an example of a photo that is unlikely to work well as the faces are too big and close to the edges. When trimming to fit the heart locket, part of the woman’s face/chin and the man’s head/ear might be lost.

The tiling option is a useful tool if you want to have multiple copies of your image at no extra cost.

A selection of small prints that we ordered for our heart locket.

We used a ruler and the locket to check the sizing of the prints.

To trim your photos, first make a heart template from a plain piece of paper. Use this template to decide which photos work best for the heart locket, and use it as a starting point for cutting the pictures into a heart.

Keep them slightly larger than needed to begin with, and gradually take off tiny slithers until each photo is a perfect fit. Make sure you use sharp scissors!

Our locket does not have a metal ‘frame’ surrounding each photo window to hold the picture in place, so instead we used craft glue to fix them to the metal. We found the 2cm x 2cm prints worked best as we needed a smaller heart to fit neatly inside the photo window. If your locket does have a frame where you tuck in the edges of the photo, you will need to allow for this when cutting.

Et voila! Our beautiful family locket filled with happy memories :)

Don’t forget to see How to print locket size photos for more details on ordering.

Photo for a Heart Locket was originally published in OddPrints on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

For the purposes of this article, we have focused on a child’s UK passport. Please be sure to go online and check the passport photo guidelines relevant to your country. There are also some GREAT TIPS FOR ADULTS who need passport photos delivered to their door.

1Find a well lit room with a plain wall (in this case we chose a light grey wall in the living room) and sit your child comfortably in front of the wall. Hold her there if necessary but keep your hands far down the torso so they will not be seen in the photograph. Ensure your child is not sitting too close to the wall, avoiding creating shadows behind her.

2 You will probably need 2 or 3 people involved to get the best photo:

Person One with the camera (these days a good quality phone camera can work well).

Person Two looking after your child and holding her in place.

Person Three standing behind Person One, waving toys in the air and making silly faces, to get your child looking at the camera.

3 Take a variety of photos, close up and further away, so you have a selection to choose from. Try to ensure there aren’t any hard shadows falling on your child’s face or on the wall behind them. In the UK the gov.uk website says “Children under 6 don’t have to be looking directly at the camera or have a neutral expression” so feel free to use a fun photo :)

4 Visit www.oddprints.com and upload your chosen picture. It might even be a good idea to choose two or three photos so you have options. Remember that photos can sometimes look different on your device screen compared to an actual print as the brightness on screens vary.

5 Enter the sizes you require or simply use the passport presets available in the dropdown menu. The passport presets automatically turn the tiling option on which duplicates your picture, fitting multiple prints onto one page (but costing no more!)

6 Choose your composition. If required, shrink the cropping tool (the blue rectangle) to zoom into the area of photo you want printed. Move it around until you’re happy with the composition. The face should be about 2/3 of the cropping height.

7 Check the print layout. Ensure you check the “How it looks when it’s been printed out” section further down the editing page before adding to basket.

This section shows you how many passport photos will be printed onto one standard 4x6" page, when the tiling option is turned ‘On’. The background colour defaults to a light grey but you can change this to white if you prefer.

8 In the checkout, review your order by checking the measurements and quantity of your prints. A good tip is to click on the thumbnail image in the checkout to enlarge the picture and check what your print will look like. When happy with everything, and after selecting either standard (default) or express delivery, click ‘Add Address’ to complete your order details and make payment.

Enlarged image is shown when clicking on the thumbnail in the checkout.

9 Trim your prints. Your prints will arrive in the post on 6” x 4” standard sized photographic paper, you will need to trim them down. They usually do not need a border (check the passport requirements) so cut along the edge of the image.

10 Apply for your passport. Now you have your passport pictures at the correct size, you can apply for your passport following instructions from the relevant passport office (ensure you check online).

This is Trebah Garden in Cornwall, UK. It’s a beautiful place and after a relaxing meander through the mix of domestic and tropical vegetation you come to a secluded private beach where you can paddle, eat ice-cream and gaze out to sea.

Looking back towards the house at the top of the valley, the pond with the Monet bridge is tranquil and peaceful and takes a good photo. Good enough to print.

You could print off the photo as is but what about looking at it from a different perspective? A panoramic perspective? You could have taken it with your smartphone or camera in panoramic view. But if you only have the standard ratio image, with OddPrints you can choose something a little different.

Creating your Panoramic…

Once the image is uploaded to the website, select the Panoramic preset which will select an 18″ x 4″ area of the photo. You can move it up and down the image to select the area you wish to print.

You can even choose a smaller section of the image by dragging the blue squares and moving the selected area around the image. The “How it looks when it’s been printed out” preview will update real-time as you move it so you can see what your print will look like straight away.

With this option you can capture the best parts of your picture and make a beautiful image really unique.

Jump straight to it at https://www.oddprints.com/panoramic

A Different Perspective was originally published in OddPrints on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
