The mother of all big daddies

Image
It's August Kids! And we all know that means Fan Expo! Once again, I've dedicated two months of my life in prep and stress for about four days of comics and friends and nerds. In that exact order. I'm tabling with Selena once more, and our table number is A247! If you'll be in the vicinity, please come by and say hello! I was feeling very worried about how things would pan out, and about getting everything done. But once I had a sit down with Selena and we plotted our weekend out, I felt a lot better! Now I'm super excited to start my vacation next wednesday. This year, we'll both have four prints each.

I've got more vertical Batwoman prints from last year!

An Avengers print from the Spitballin' week.

A fire bending Korra scroll print.

And a cute smaller print for Harley and Ivy! As usual, Selena and I will be doing commissions at the show! Last year, I promised plenty of tweets and tumblr photos about our days there. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of the iffy wi-fi in the building. We'll see how we fair this year!

Hey babies, happy tuesday! I'm coming to you with sun burns and sketches. You only get to see the sketches though I haven't done a lot of finished drawings lately, mostly just doodles of character studies. Doing up a post, I realized I actually had a large back log of them in my sketchbook!

Here's what I've been listening to on repeat the last few days The last few Take Off! pages I've been trying something different. Before, I drew everything straight on to the comic board paper. Sketched, erased, resketched; no laying out the page before hand. Start to finish was on the comic board. LATELY, I've been working the panels out in my sketchbook first, and then light boxing the finished art on to the comic board. At first it was because-- there were times I'd leave my comic board pages at the studio (they're pretty big and hard to stuff into my bag everyday). I've been leaving working on the page the day before Update Day- but for whatever reason I'd have trouble getting into the studio to get to my comic board pages. So I dolled them out in my sketchbook, and then Update Day I'd get to the studio- light box pencil them on the comic board pages to ink.

And then a peek at thursday's page!

That's it for this week babies. See you soon!

Don't stop me now

Good lord it's July! I don't know why that's a surprise though, it's certainly FELT like July. But I've been gone babies, and now I'm back at full strength! With an art dump like whoa! I don't think I'll clog this thing up with EVERYTHING I've worked on, but here's some highlights the last few months.

The last little while I've had a hard time keeping track of day it is, worried I've missed some deadline or about how much time I have left for a project. Between Take Off!, Spitballin', Fan Expo, and another project I'm working on- it's been a little dizzying haha. I'm assuming the stress dreams with start when August begins. Take off! is something I'm still grinding out. Happily though! The two days a week schedule has kept the story really fresh for me, I love the pace. I cleared a 100 pages to my delight! At the same time, I feel like I still have a long way to go until it's done. This thing is going to be a BEAST to print haha. I don't think it'd be so great to post EVERY page since the last post, so here's the pages I LIKED since the last post.

I mentioned this in the post previous, the studio has really pressured me to make further strides in my art and comics. Also with what I want from comics as a job. I am still chasing that dream of making it my one full time gig. For now, I still enjoy it immensely. I've been listening to this a lot when I work on the website. I need to most mellow kind of environment when I tackle html and ftp haha With Fan expo coming up, and a headcount on my business cards- I've been working on a new design for the cards- and the website it directs people to, 'megacarter.com' If you go there now, you can see it's already different, but there's more to come! Still a lot of space to fill in there. That's it for this post babies! I didn't want to fill this post up with apologies about lateness and ignoring the blog, or promises to be better. I'll just end saying this is as much my job as the comic, I need to remember that :)

Possessed by comics

Hey there my babies! Some big updates this time around. The biggest one that started this month, is that I work out of a studio now! RAID studio was moving into a bigger space, and had been looking for new members to help expand. Members include Marcus To, Francis Manapul, Ramon Perez, Kalman Androfsky, Willow Dawson and more talented folk. Marcus invited some friends and I to join the studio space.

And I said yes! I now get to pick up a coffee and carry a portfolio case to work at a desk for eight hours. I'm thoroughly enjoying myself, and it's just really super to see my friends everyday :)

The next bit of news is something that I mentioned in the previous update: I made a resolution to move Take off! to two updates a week. The news is that I did it! I accomplished my resolution, and it's worked out great. It feels awesome with the story progressing twice as fast as before. And being at the studio has really pressured me to move forward with my art and try new things.

I also finally, FINALLY changed the Take off! banner. The site in fact is a bit more streamlined to my liking. I really wish I had the patience for css so I could bother fixing up the website. Until then though.

Doing two pages a week has really changed how I think. Or rather it's forced me to change how I think. Because as soon as I'm done one page, I have get started on the next. There's very little break for me to stop thinking about Take off! now. Working at the studio has helped, in the way that I'm getting my work done a lot faster. And the atmosphere is all comics. I find myself going to the studio to work on comics, talk about comics, maybe even buy some comics at the store nearby. Then I go home or to my night job and-- there's no off switch. I'm still thinking about comics. I feel possessed by comics. It's all I want to think about. The comic I'm working on, the comics I WANT to work on. Comics I want to be as good as.

It's a charmed life I lead. Until next time babies!
