Memory Scraps

As a child I’d look up at the night sky in amazement.  Sadly, much of my view was blocked by trees and distant city lights and those beginner telescopes work as well as binoculars.  As I grew older, I decided being an astronaut wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.  Those gorgeous colors you see in images of far away galaxies are added by computers to distinguish the types of gases and other stuff that is being emitted in that part of space.  Astronauts don’t see that.  It was really the scientists and astro-physists that I aimed to become, but with my grades (/blush) that wasn’t a realistic option for me.  But that doesn’t mean my parents didn’t encourage those dreams!  As a child, who cares if the pretty colors aren’t there?  Who cares if there are no green aliens waiting on Mars to show me the next big technology?  Who cares that rocket ships don’t travel at the speed of light and the chances of reaching planets outside our own solar system will likely not come in our lifetimes?  Certainly not I.  And certainly not your little astronauts and dreamers either!
