All About Miss Garber

Miss Garber's favorite color is green.  Her favorite food is chicken salad.  She loves to teach 2nd graders.  They give the best hugs.  She has a dog named Dudley who gets into all sorts of trouble.  He can jump very high and he loves to wag his tail.  Miss Garber's favorite subjects are math, reading, writing, and science.  She can speak Russian and enjoys spending time with her nieces and nephews.  She is excited for this school year.

Mrs. Hirst

Mrs. Hirst is a student teacher from the University of Utah and will be teaching with Miss Garber part of this school year. Mrs. Hirst’s favorite color is pink and she loves flowers. Her favorite foods are tomatoes but she loves almost anything she doesn’t have to cook herself. She has five children. Her oldest three are girls and her youngest two are boys. She loves spending time with them more than anything else in the whole world. She also loves to sew, exercise, hike, snow mobile, go to movies and travel. She has spent a lot of time in Peru and used to live in Guatemala and Costa Rica. Her very favorite place she has ever visited is Italy. More than anything, she wants to teach elementary school so she went back to school to become a teacher and is so happy to be spending this school year with us!

Favorite Math Box games and activities

  • Flash card memory. Use your flashcards to find matching pairs. 1+5 would match with 2+4 because they both have the sum of 6. You can play them face up at first. For a challenge mix in addition and subtraction. This game can be played alone or in a group.
  • Match a ten Use the digit cards. Turn all of the cards face down. The object is to match a ten. 5 + 5, 4 + 6, or 1 + 3 + 6
  • Difference War – Use the number cards and markers Each player flips one card. Find the difference between the two numbers. The person with the higher number gets to count out markers representing the difference. (Player one draws the number 4, player two draws the number 1, then player one would get to take 3 markers. 4-1=3) When all the cards are gone, add up all the markers. The player with the most markers wins.
  • Fishing for tens – This game is similar to go fish. Use the number cards. Instead of making pairs the goal is to make tens.
  • Roll a Hundred -- Start on one.  Roll two dice.  Move that number of spaces.  How many rolls did it take you to get to 100?  Play with a partner.  Use the same board but two different markers.  First one to 100 wins.  Do you recognize any patterns?
  • Greater than less than -- Use your greater than or less than spinner.  Draw two number cards to make a two-digit number.  Have a partner draw two cards to make a two-digit number.   Spin the spinner.  If it lands on greater than the person with the larger number writes the math expression on their paper.  If it lands on less than the person with the smaller number writes the math expression on their paper.  When all the cards are gone spin the spinner a final time.  the winner is determined by whomever has the greater or fewer number of math expression on their paper.
