A pub landlord has told his staff they can’t serve anyone on Sunday unless they are wearing a Royal British Legion poppy.

Sean Donnelly, landlord of the Three Lions pub, is passionate about Remembrance Day and said that anyone without a poppy can’t get a drink.

But he will be selling a range of poppies at the bar in Bedminster, Bristol, and he will also be offering a free drink to any current or former member of the Armed Forces.

He said that anyone who turns up to the bar on Sunday, November 10, will be turned away or advised to buy a poppy if they aren’t already wearing one.

Mr Donnelly said anyone coming into the pub would be offered the chance to take one for a donation to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

The pub is already well-known as a patriotic venue, last year the front was transformed into a giant shimmering England flag ahead of the World Cup.

At the time, Mr Donnelly said he wanted to reclaim the symbol of the flag from its tarnished association with racism in this country.

Present or veteran service personnel will get the red carpet treatment however, and be able to claim a free drink.

It could be a cheap trip to the pub too, as First Bus have announced that they are offering free travel on Remembrance Sunday to eligible veterans.

Last year, Mr Donnelly said they had to make sure the poppies on sale had the 2018 date on, as some had dusted off poppies from previous years to avoid making a donation.
