I finally got around to having fiber installed in my apartment about a week ago!

There’s just one slight problem, the Funbox 7 (from here on now referred to as the Shitbox 7). I’m a bit of a weirdo, and I like to set my networks up in specific ways, so a device that does not have a bridge mode (except if you’re a business customer sigh) and has completely useless firewall settings, is certainly not ideal.

bHaptics hardware on Linux

A couple weeks ago I was talking with someone on Reso about the bHaptics integration being broken for a while. There was a mod that fixed it, but was from the looks of it majorly vibecoded (with copilot as a “contributor” even), but it also worked in weird ways and introduced its own issues.

That prompted me to make my own mod that simply replaces the broken library and tries to keep everything else unchanged, the results of that you can see here.

I thought instead of doing resolutions or wishes, I should make a TODO list for myself, so here’s what I want to (finally) get done in 2026!

Getting hand estimation into Monado

A draft PR I made for adding action set priorities to xrizer is now almost a year old, and that’s really sad! This change would fix a lot of games that currently have input issues when running on a FOSS XR stack, so why can it not be merged yet?

The phone has a Fedora now

This is just a short update about the server that has been hosting this website and all the other stuff I host. As you may or may not be aware, it is a phone, a phone with linux to be exact, a Pocophone F1 running the postmarketOS kernel and <del>Arch</del> Fedora to be even more exact!

While I like the work that has gone into porting Arch to arm64 with the Arch Linux ARM project, the distro is not really in the best shape, with several packages missing and having to be installed from the AUR or built manually. It became quite annoying to deal with, so I decided to install Fedora 42, which has a well-supported arm variant. The way I went about it is probably not very well supported - I pretty much just used the container rootfs and manually installed everything I need - but that does save me a lot of effort on a device like this, because I can prepare a complete bootable system on another btrfs subvolume, and then use the existing kernel and initramfs to boot into it.

How you can help Linux VR thrive

VR on Linux has been known to be a bit of a pain… I’ve written about my experience with SteamVR/ALVR here before, and it was a lot of effort just to get SteamVR crashes that seemingly come back for no reason.

And that’s really the issue, SteamVR. It’s a buggy mess on Linux, it rarely gets fixes, and some issues remain after years of being known about and reported. It’s a proprietary runtime, so there’s not much the community can do about it.

Deprecate the meatsuit

CW: existential, thanatophobia triggers

Enough is enough. Our biology has caused enough tragedies already, and yet some of us keep living as if that’s okay, as if allowing sentient beings to slowly deteriorate because evolution did not care about anything besides us surviving long enough to fuck is alright.

Here are some reasons to deprecate that damn meatsuit.

It’s boring

Not much to say here, having animal parts is fun, skinsuits are boring.

GenAI bad

First things first, I’m not a huge fan of copyright, especially as it relates to corporations, and especially software they create (which also has additional restrictions to make sure you don’t break thier precious totally breakable locks). I think it’s culturally restrictive, it’s made for a capitalist system, and it obviously favors large entities which hold it.

The recent flood caused by genAI has caused a resurgence of pro-copyright takes, and I feel corporations that benefit from the copyright regime are definitely having a moment right now.

The Linux VR experience

So, let me guess… You finally want to have a fuzzy avatar, or play that Half-Life game, but your OS is special?

That was me until recently, and so I got myself a treat!

Quest 3

First thing I had to do was decide on a headset. The fact only Zucc had options that seemed affordable enough for their specs definitely made me uneasy, but I had to swallow that sadly.

Despite the title, I’ll actually touch on multiple topics in this post, so be advised, there will be some existential thoughts involved. I will hide the heavier bits behind a spoiler for the sake of other folks dealing with the same issues.

Note: This is not an invitation to debate me on my own feelings. I’m willing to engage in a discussions about most things mentioned here, but the spoilered parts should be avoided, or at least CWed, as just mentioning them in detail in the wrong circumstances can cause me to go down a spiral, they are most definitely not up for debate.

Perhaps we need a new chat protocol?

Introduction

If you’re reading this, it’s very possible you’ve already seen me rant about chat protcols on fedi, sometimes with a bit too much passion. In my opinion the problem is that pretty much all of them have design issues that make them poor competitors to their centralized counterparts, especially Discord. Let’s go over them!

Matrix

This is possibly the closest thing we have to Discord right now in terms of features, it has a healthy selection of clients (though annoyingly every one of them does almost everything right except that one thing you need, so you can never find one that satisfies you, don’t even try) and even a couple server implementations.

After over half a year of dragging it out and being distracted by other things, I finally managed to set up a blog!

CMS?

My original idea was to actually write some kind of CMS and possibly ActivityPub integration for comments/reading. This didn’t really work out. As it turns out doing such a thing is quite more effort than it’s worth, and it also means you have to take care of things like moderation features yourself.
