MPA DAY 2025

2025 Theme: Ocean protection needs human connection

MPA Day 2025 was a landmark celebration of the deep, enduring connections between people and the sea.

Around the world, communities came together to honour marine protected areas (MPAs)—reminding us that these vital ocean spaces thrive when they are woven into everyday life through stories, art, community, and learning.

This year, over 100 events took place globally—from guided coastal walks and hands-on workshops to expert panels, beach cleanups, and photography tours. Each event brought together children, scientists, artists, fishers, and policymakers, reflecting the diversity of coastal cultures and the many ways we interact with the sea.

The MPA Creative Waves Campaign invited 15 artists and creators from around the world to share how the ocean inspires their work. More than 45 other artists shared their content in a wider social media movement that encouraged everyone to explore and showcase how their art is shaped by the sea, sparking a wave of creative expression and ocean connection.

Adding movement to the mix, the #Run4MPAs challenge on Strava invited runners everywhere to lace up in support of marine protection. Participants collectively ran a total distance of more than 800 kilometres, raising awareness through every step.

This year also marked the launch of a revamped MPA Day website and a long-term content strategy, designed to carry the spirit of MPA Day beyond 1 August. Through regularly scheduled multimedia content, we’re going to be keeping ocean stories alive and accessible all year long.

MPA Day 2025 reached its widest audience yet, with celebrations across 39 countries and regions.

Each event blended local knowledge with a shared global message: ocean protection needs human connection.

BLUE ALLIANCE MPA

Together, we are helping the planet. One MPA at a time.

Founded in 2015 by Nicolas Pascal and Angelique Brathwaite, Blue Alliance MPA develops self-sustaining funding models for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Their approach combines science-based conservation, co-management with local authorities, and support for reef-positive businesses to protect marine ecosystems while benefiting coastal communities.

Operating in the Philippines, Belize, Indonesia, and Zanzibar, Blue Alliance partners with governments and stakeholders to build resilient, financially sustainable MPAs.

They joined MPA Day in 2025 to help raise awareness.

CREATIVE WAVES 2025

Image

Under the theme “Ocean protection needs human connection,” 15 multidisciplinary artists—spanning illustration, photography, graffiti, fine art, design, writing, and animation—explored the emotions the ocean evokes in their work.

Their perspectives remind us that marine protection is not only scientific or political, but also an act of care, memory, and belonging—a human call to defend what we cannot bear to lose.

In total, more than 45 entries were also submitted online.

RUN 4 MPA DAY

Image

Through our #Run4MPAs challenge on Strava, our community went the distance—clocking more than 800 kilometres!

Every step, stride, and sprint was a show of solidarity for our ocean, proving that when we move together, we can create waves of change.
